Reproducibility Of A Ramping Protocol To Measure Cerebral Vascular Reactivity Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nicholas G. Evanoff, Bryon A. Mueller, Kara L. Marlatt, Justin R. Geijer, Kelvin O. Lim, Donald R. Dengel

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Though individual differences in arterial carbon dioxide and oxygen levels inherently exist, the degree of their influence on cerebral vascular reactivity (CVR) is less clear. We examined the reproducibility of BOLD signal changes to an iso-oxic ramping PetCO2 protocol. CVR changes were induced by altering PetCO2 while holding PetO2 constant using a computer-controlled sequential gas delivery (SGD) device. Two MRI scans, each including a linear change in PetCO2, were performed using a 3-Tesla (3T) scanner. This ramp sequence consisted of 1 min at 30 mmHg followed by 4 min period during where PetCO2 was linearly increased from 30 to 50 …

Direct Measurement Of Sweetpotato Surface Area And Volume Using A Low-Cost 3d Scanner For Identification Of Shape Features Related To Processing Product Recovery, Arthur Villordon, Jeffrey C. Gregorie, Don Labonte May 2020

Direct Measurement Of Sweetpotato Surface Area And Volume Using A Low-Cost 3d Scanner For Identification Of Shape Features Related To Processing Product Recovery, Arthur Villordon, Jeffrey C. Gregorie, Don Labonte

Faculty Publications

The growing demand for sweetpotato French fry and other processed products has increased the need for producing storage roots of desired shape profile (i.e., blocky and less tapered). Length-width ratio (LW) is the current de facto standard for characterizing sweetpotato shape. AlthoughLWis sensitive and descriptive of some types of shape variability, this index may be inadequate to measure taper and other subtle shape variations. Prior work has shown that surface area (SA) and volume (VOL) are important shape descriptors but current direct measurement methods are tedious, inconsistent, and often destructive. A low-cost three-dimensional (3D) scanner was used to acquire digital …

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

Purpose: Incidence and mortality rates of uterine cancer are increasing and, obesity, which is also rising, has been associated with uterine cancer development and mortality. A recent study found that poor sleep quality is common among endometrial cancer survivors and those with obesity had more sleep disturbances than those having normal weight. However, it is unclear if higher levels of obesity (Class III, BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2), which are rising rapidly, are differentially associated with sleep as well as depression and quality of life in endometrial cancer survivors. Methods: We evaluated sleep, depression, and quality of life in 100 Stage …

Impact Of Calorie Restriction On Energy Metabolism In Humans, Jasper Most, Leanne Maree Redman May 2020

Impact Of Calorie Restriction On Energy Metabolism In Humans, Jasper Most, Leanne Maree Redman

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Calorie restriction (CR) is the most potent, non-pharmacological intervention to support metabolic health. The effects of calorie restriction exceed weight loss. Consistent throughout many studies, calorie restriction induces a reduction in energy expenditure that is larger than the loss of metabolic mass, i.e. fat-free mass and fat mass, can explain. Per prevailing theories of mammalian aging, this disproportionate reduction in metabolic rate, defined as metabolic adaptation, reduces oxidative damage and thereby delays age-associated declines in physiological function. The aim of this narrative review is to investigate the origins of CR-induced metabolic adaptation. From a physiological standpoint this likely relates to …

Quasilinear Riccati-Type Equations With Oscillatory And Singular Data, Quoc Hung Nguyen, Nguyen Cong Phuc May 2020

Quasilinear Riccati-Type Equations With Oscillatory And Singular Data, Quoc Hung Nguyen, Nguyen Cong Phuc

Faculty Publications

We characterize the existence of solutions to the quasilinear Riccati-type equation [EQUATION PRESENTED] with a distributional or measure datum . Here divA(x) is a quasilinear elliptic operator modeled after the p-Laplacian (p > 1), and is a bounded domain whose boundary is sufficiently flat (in the sense of Reifenberg). For distributional data, we assume that p > 1 and q > p. For measure data, we assume that they are compactly supported in, p > 3n.2 2n-1 , and q is in the sub-linear range p -1 > q > 1.We also assume more regularity conditions on A and on δωω in this case.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are highly abundant, amendable to high-throughput genotyping, and useful for a number of breeding and genetics applications in crops. SNP frequencies vary depending on the species and populations under study, and therefore target SNPs need to be carefully selected to be informative for each application. While multiple SNP genotyping systems are available for rice (Oryza sativa L. and its relatives), they vary in their informativeness, cost, marker density, speed, flexibility, and data quality. In this study, we report the development and performance of the Cornell-IR LD Rice Array (C7AIR), a second-generation SNP array containing 7,098 markers …

Conserved And Variable Responses Of The Gut Microbiome To Resistant Starch Type 2, Zachary A. Bendiks, Knud E.B. Knudsen, Michael J. Keenan, Maria L. Marco

Faculty Publications

Resistant starch type 2 (RS2), a dietary fiber comprised solely of glucose, has been extensively studied in clinical trials and animal models for its capacity to improve metabolic and systemic health. Because the health modulatory effects of RS2 and other dietary fibers are thought to occur through modification of the gut microbiome, those studies frequently include assessments of RS2-mediated changes to intestinal microbial composition and function. In this review, we identify the conserved responses of the gut microbiome among 13 human and 35 animal RS2 intervention studies. Consistent outcomes of RS2 interventions include reductions in bacterial α-diversity; increased production of …

Magnetic Field–Driven Assembly And Reconfiguration Of Multicomponent Supraparticles, A. Al Harraq, J. G. Lee, B. Bharti

Faculty Publications

Suprastructures at the colloidal scale must be assembled with precise control over local interactions to accurately mimic biological complexes. The toughest design requirements include breaking the symmetry of assembly in a simple and reversible fashion to unlock functions and properties so far limited to living matter. We demonstrate a simple experimental technique to program magnetic field–induced interactions between metallodielectric patchy particles and isotropic, nonmagnetic “satellite” particles. By controlling the connectivity, composition, and distribution of building blocks, we show the assembly of three-dimensional, multicomponent supraparticles that can dynamically reconfigure in response to change in external field strength. The local arrangement of …

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the major crops susceptible to Aspergillus flavus infection and subsequent contamination with aflatoxins, the most potent naturally produced carcinogenic secondary metabolites. This pathogen can pose serious health concerns and cause severe economic losses due to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations on permissible levels of aflatoxins in food and feed. Although biocontrol has yielded some successes in managing aflatoxin contamination, enhancing crop resistance is still the preferred choice of management for long-term sustainability. Hence, host induced gene silencing (HIGS) strategy was explored in this study. The A. flavus gene aflM encoding versicolorin …

Faculty Publications

Endornaviruses include viruses that infect fungi, oomycetes, and plants. The genome of plant endornaviruses consists of linear ssRNA ranging in size from approximately 13-18 kb and lacking capsid protein and cell-to-cell movement capability. Although, plant endornaviruses have not been shown to cause detectable changes in the plant phenotype, they have been associated with alterations of the host physiology. Except for the association of cytoplasmic vesicles with infections by Vicia faba endornavirus, effects on the plant cell ultrastructure caused by endornaviruses have not been reported. Bell pepper endornavirus (BPEV) has been identified in several pepper (Capsicum spp.) species. We conducted ultrastructural …

Development Of High-Fiber Belgian Waffles And Evaluation Of Product Acceptance, Product-Elicited Emotion, And Purchase Intent By Millennial Consumers, 2253299685 Velasquez

LSU Master's Theses

Dietary fiber may help reduce LDL cholesterol levels and prevent cardiovascular diseases. The US-FDA recommends 14g of fiber/1000kcal consumed, but Americans consume/day. A product containing ≥5 grams of fiber/serving can be claimed as a high-fiber product. Adding dietary fiber to food affects their physicochemical properties and sensory quality, possibly leading to less product acceptability. This study was performed to assess selected physicochemical properties and consumer perception of “high-fiber” Belgian waffles. Waffles were formulated to have fiber contents of

The relaxation processes of the adiabatic temperature changes (ΔTad) at the phase transitions in Ni45Mn43CoSn11, Ni50Mn36.5In13.5, and Ni50Mn35In14.25B0.75 Heusler alloys with different magnetic structures have been studied using a direct extraction method in magnetic fields up to 14 T. It has been found that ΔTad exhibits short relaxation times (less than 10−1 (s)) in the vicinity of the second order phase transitions at the Curie temperatures. The relaxation times of the first order martensitic transitions strongly depend on the latent heat of the transition and can be characterized by a logarithmic law.

Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. A complementary analysis that introduces an additional free parameter which allows non-PMNS values of electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance also finds no discrepancy between data …
