Comparison Of High-Tech Augmentative And Alternative Communication Interfaces: Do Age And Technology Experience Matter?, Surani Gopika Nakkawita

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated that individuals with stroke-induced aphasia can use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) when they cannot meet their communication needs using spoken language (Dietz, Weissling, Griffith, McKelvey, & Macke, 2014; Purdy & Van Dyke, 2011). Of the various interfaces found in the different AAC systems, the grid display and the visual scene display (VSD) have been used by individuals with aphasia (Hough & Johnson, 2009; Dietz et al., 2018). However, there is a scarcity of research examining the comparative usefulness of these interfaces.

This prospective study attempted to understand how neurologically healthy individuals of different ages and …

Relational Turbulence And Perceptions Of Social Network Support For Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kellie St Cyr Brisini, Denise Haunani Solomon

Faculty Publications

A wealth of research indicates that social support positively influences parental and family well-being in families of children with disabilities; however, not all supportive efforts are positively received. This study employs the framework of relational turbulence theory to examine evaluations of social support from social network members among parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In a cross-sectional survey, ninety-four parents of children with ASD (47 heterosexual couples) reported a social network member to whom they disclose issues regarding their marriage and evaluated that network member’s support for their marriage and their parenting. Results of actor-only interdependence modeling demonstrated …

© 2020 Royal Society of Chemistry. All rights reserved. Thermal stress on the biosphere during the extreme warmth of the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was most severe at low latitudes, with sea surface temperatures at some localities exceeding the 35 C at which marine organisms experience heat stress. Relatively few equivalent terrestrial sections have been identified, and the response of land plants to this extreme heat is still poorly understood. Here, we present a new record of the PETM from the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact crater that has been identified based on nannofossil biostratigraphy, an acme of the …

Race, Gender, And Salary Equity: A Cross-Classified Random-Effects Approach To Examining Faculty Pay And Salary Equity Within Higher Education Research Institutions, Kimberly G. Lecompte Oct 2020

Race, Gender, And Salary Equity: A Cross-Classified Random-Effects Approach To Examining Faculty Pay And Salary Equity Within Higher Education Research Institutions, Kimberly G. Lecompte

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study expands on decades of research by exploring inequities in faculty salaries between gender as well as race/ethnicity while acknowledging the complexities of the higher education labor market that influence salary. Drawing from human capital, structural, and academic capitalism theory, this analysis utilized three recent surveys administered by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics matched with aggregated institutional data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System for the years 2013, 2015, and 2017. The results indicated that the variance observed in faculty salaries is largely due to demographic and human capital variables such as experience, rank, and …

The layered transition-metal dichalcogenide PdTe2 has been discovered to possess bulk Dirac points as well as topological surface states. By measuring the magnetization (up to 7 T) and magnetic torque (up to 35 T) in single crystalline PdTe2, we observe distinct de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations. Eight frequencies are identified with H||c, with two low frequencies (F α = 8 T and F β = 117 T) dominating the spectrum. The effective masses obtained by fitting the Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) equation to the data are mα∗=0.059m0 and mβ∗=0.067m0 where m 0 is the free electron mass. The corresponding Landau fan diagrams …

Adaptive Data Migration In Load-Imbalanced Hpc Applications, Parsa Amini Oct 2020

Adaptive Data Migration In Load-Imbalanced Hpc Applications, Parsa Amini

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Distributed parallel applications need to maximize and maintain computer resource utilization and be portable across different machines. Balanced execution of some applications requires more effort than others because their data distribution changes over time. Data re-distribution at runtime requires elaborate schemes that are expensive and may benefit particular applications.

This dissertation discusses a solution for HPX applications to monitor application execution with APEX and use AGAS migration to adaptively redistribute data and load balance applications at runtime to improve application performance and scaling behavior. This dissertation provides evidence for the practicality of using the Active Global Address Space as is …

© 2020 Elsevier B.V. The eastern Himalayan syntaxis, where the Yarlung Tsangpo sharply bends, is one of the areas experiencing most rapid exhumation on Earth. The rapid exhumation is often regarded as the result of capture of the Yarlung Tsangpo by the Brahmaputra River. However, both the timing of integration of the Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra River and initiation of the rapid syntaxial exhumation are debated. As the ultimate sedimentary trap of the Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra River, the Nicobar Fan is a window to look into the drainage evolution and exhumation history of the eastern Himalaya. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Estrogen synthesis and signaling in the brains of vertebrates has pleotropic effects ranging from neurogenesis to modulation of behaviors. The majority of studies on brain-derived estrogens focus on males, but estrogenic signaling in females likely plays important roles in regulation of reproductive cycling and social behaviors. We used females of the mouth brooding African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni, to test for reproductive state-dependent changes in estrogenic signaling capacity within microdissected brain nuclei that are important for social behaviors. Expression levels of the rate-limiting enzyme aromatase, but not estrogen receptors, measured by qPCR changes across the …

© 2020 IBRO Parental care is widespread in the animal kingdom, but for many species, provisioning energetic resources must be balanced with trade-offs between self-promoting and offspring-promoting behaviors. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying these motivational decisions. Mouthbrooding is an extreme form of parental care most common in fishes that provides an ideal opportunity to examine which brain regions are involved in parenting and energetics. The African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni is a maternal mouthbrooder in which females hold developing young inside their mouths for 2 weeks. This brood care makes feeding impossible, so females undergo obligatory …

A putative endornavirus was detected in Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum) in Louisiana, USA. The virus was provisionally named Geranium carolinianum endornavirus 1 (GcEV1). The viral RNA was sequenced, and it consisted of 14,625 nt containing a single ORF coding a putative polyprotein of 4815 aa with conserved domains for a helicase 1, peptidase C97, glycosyl transferase GTB-type, and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase 2. The 5′end consisted of 130 nt while the 3′end consisted of 54 nt ending in nine cytosine residues. The closest relative to GcEV1 was Phaseolus vulgaris endornavirus 3. In phylogenetic analyses, GcEV1 clustered with members of the genus …

Using Spatial Analysis And Machine Learning Techniques To Develop A Comprehensive Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Consolidation Model, Samira Soleimani Oct 2020

Using Spatial Analysis And Machine Learning Techniques To Develop A Comprehensive Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Consolidation Model, Samira Soleimani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The safety of highway-railroad grade crossings (HRGC) is still an issue in the United States of America (USA). The grade crossing is where a railroad crosses a road at the same level without any over or underpass. To improve the safety of crossings, the crossings’ condition should be explored from several aspects such as engineering design (speed limit, warning signs, etc.), road condition (number of lanes, surface markings, etc.), rail design (the type of track, ballast, etc.), temporal variables (weather, visibility, time of day, lightning, etc.), social variables (population, race, etc.), and last but not least, spatial variables (the type …

The Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson Method With Curved Elements, Douglas N. Arnold, Shawn W. Walker Oct 2020

The Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson Method With Curved Elements, Douglas N. Arnold, Shawn W. Walker

Faculty Publications

We study the finite element approximation of the Kirchhoff plate equation on domains with curved boundaries using the Hellan-Herrmann-Johnson (HHJ) method. We prove optimal convergence on domains with piecewise Ck+1 boundary for k ≥ 1 when using a parametric (curved) HHJ space. Computational results are given that demonstrate optimal convergence and how convergence degrades when curved triangles of insufficient polynomial degree are used. Moreover, we show that the lowest order HHJ method on a polygonal approximation of the disk does not succumb to the classic Babuška paradox, highlighting the geometrically nonconforming aspect of the HHJ method.

Copyright © 2020 American Chemical Society. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based bottlebrush polymers, PDMS-g-PDMS, have been synthesized by anionic polymerization in combination with a condensation-based grafting reaction. Bottlebrush polymers show intriguing features, e.g., extremely low viscosities. Hereby, studies of their dynamics are rare. Therefore, we focus on the segmental relaxation by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. An increasing cross-sectional radius proportional to the increasing side chain length has been observed by small-angle neutron scattering over three samples. A comparison of the segmental relaxation times of the bottlebrushes with the respective linear chains reveals slower dynamics in the former. For longer chains, this effect vanishes.

Background: The structure of the Hoyle state, a highly α-clustered state at 7.65 MeV in C12, has long been the subject of debate. Understanding if the system comprises of three weakly interacting α particles in the 0s orbital, known as an α-condensate state, is possible by studying the decay branches of the Hoyle state. Purpose: The direct decay of the Hoyle state into three α particles, rather than through the Be8 ground state, can be identified by studying the energy partition of the three α particles arising from the decay. This paper provides details on the breakup mechanism of the …

In this paper, tunable dual plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) is achieved by using a monolayer graphene metamaterial in the terahertz region, which consists of two graphene strips of different sizes and a graphene ring. As the dual PIT effect is induced by the destructive interference between the two quasi-dark modes and the bright mode, we propose a four-level plasmonic system based on the linearly coupled Lorentzian oscillators to explain the mechanism behind the dual PIT. It is proved that the theoretical results agree well with the simulation results. Most importantly, the sensing properties of the designed device have been investigated in …

We present geometric and dynamical modeling of the broad line region (BLR) for the multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign focused on NGC 5548 in 2014. The data set includes photometric and spectroscopic monitoring in the optical and ultraviolet, covering the Hβ, C iv, and Ly broad emission lines. We find an extended disk-like Hβ BLR with a mixture of near-circular and outflowing gas trajectories, while the C iv and Ly BLRs are much less extended and resemble shell-like structures. There is clear radial structure in the BLR, with C iv and Ly emission arising at smaller radii than the Hβ emission. …

We present optical, radio, and X-ray observations of SN 2020bvc (=ASASSN-20bs, ZTF 20aalxlis), a nearby broad-line (BL) Type Ic supernova (SN) and the first double-peaked Ic-BL discovered without a gamma-ray burst (GRB) trigger. Our observations show that SN 2020bvc shares several properties in common with the Ic-BL SN 2006aj, which was associated with the low-luminosity gamma-ray burst (LLGRB) 060218. First, the 10 GHz radio luminosity is brighter than ordinary core-collapse SNe but fainter than LLGRB SNe such as SN 1998bw (associated with LLGRB 980425). We model our VLA observations (spanning 13-43 days) as synchrotron emission from a mildly relativistic (v …

We introduce a new framework for studying clustering and for calculating α partial widths using ab initio wave functions. We demonstrate the formalism for Ne20, by calculating the overlap between the O16+α cluster configuration and states in Ne20 computed in the abinitio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model. We present spectroscopic amplitudes and spectroscopic factors, and compare those to no-core symplectic shell-model results in larger model spaces, to gain insight into the underlying physics that drives α clustering. Specifically, we report on the α partial width of the lowest 1- resonance in Ne20, which is found to be in good agreement with …

The Life History And Population Dynamics Of Southern Flounder, Kenneth A. Erickson

LSU Master's Theses

Southern Flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma, are a coastal, estuarine-dependent flatfish species that inhabits the Southeastern US Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Throughout their range, Southern Flounder are exploited by both commercial and recreational fisheries. Recently, numerous sources have expressed concerns about Southern Flounder populations, with stock assessments indicating declines in spawning stock biomass and recruitment. To estimate life history traits needed for informed management, such as age, growth, and maturity, I collected 327 Southern Flounder from Louisiana and obtained 14,184 historical records from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Using a von Bertalanffy growth equation in a Bayesian …

Background: The Apolipoprotein E ϵ4 allele (i.e. ApoE4) is the strongest genetic risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). TREM2 (i.e. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2) is a microglial transmembrane protein brain that plays a central role in microglia activation in response to AD brain pathologies. Whether higher TREM2-related microglia activity modulates the risk to develop clinical AD is an open question. Thus, the aim of the current study was to assess whether higher sTREM2 attenuates the effects of ApoE4-effects on future cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. Methods: We included 708 subjects ranging from cognitively normal (CN, n = …

Shelf-stable, ready-to-eat shrimp offer a convenient, portion-controlled option for a highly desirable seafood commodity. The perishability of shrimp requires tight cold-temperature control during distribution and handling. Thermal processing of shrimp was evaluated in a multimode retort with automated control of come-up, heat, and cool times and with addition of high-speed reciprocal agitation. Reciprocal agitation was compared with static retort for thermal process and quality parameters, including cook time, process time to achieve target lethality (F0), cook yield, texture, and appearance of shelf-stable shrimp. Total retort thermal processing times decreased from 30 min at 0 shakes per minute (SPM) to 17.1 …

In marine operations underwater manipulators play a primordial role. However, due to uncertainties in the dynamic model and disturbances caused by the environment, low-level control methods require great capabilities to adapt to change. Furthermore, under position and torque constraints the requirements for the control system are greatly increased. Reinforcement learning is a data driven control technique that can learn complex control policies without the need of a model. The learning capabilities of these type of agents allow for great adaptability to changes in the operative conditions. In this article we present a novel reinforcement learning low-level controller for the position …

Transitions in Tb163 following β decay of Gd163 were obtained as part of investigations of γ rays emitted following Eu163β decay to Gd163. Detailed analysis of the low-energy structure of Tb163 has been carried out with these data to expand previous β-decay studies and reactions studies of levels in Tb163. Data were collected at the LeRIBSS station of the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory with an array of four Clover HPGe detectors for γ rays and two plastic scintillators for β detection. The γ rays were identified as belonging to Gd163 and Tb163 via mass …

We consider a one dimensional elliptic distributed optimal control problem with pointwise constraints on the derivative of the state. By exploiting the variational inequality satisfied by the derivative of the optimal state, we obtain higher regularity for the optimal state under appropriate assumptions on the data. We also solve the optimal control problem as a fourth order variational inequality by a C finite element method, and present the error analysis together with numerical results. 1
