Optimizing Fisher Information In Quantum Technology, Bran Purvis
Optimizing Fisher Information In Quantum Technology, Bran Purvis
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Fisher information is a statistical metric whose inverse represents a lower bound on the variance of an unbiased estimator. Naturally, in order to make the best estimates of a given unknown parameter, one would desire to find ways to minimize the value of this lower bound. Thus, the Fisher information can also be used to compare the quality of different estimators for a given parameter: whichever estimator has a lower value for its Fisher information must also provide better estimates. The same holds true in the framework of quantum information theory, where an analog to the Fisher information, dubbed quantum …
Identifying Saharan Air Layer Events And Their Relationship To Instability And Rainfall Patterns In The Tropical North Atlantic Ocean, Charles H. Dolce
Identifying Saharan Air Layer Events And Their Relationship To Instability And Rainfall Patterns In The Tropical North Atlantic Ocean, Charles H. Dolce
LSU Master's Theses
Every year, strong North African winds across the Sahara loft dust particles and advect them westward within the Saharan Air Layer (SAL). These plumes of dust often reach the Caribbean Sea and can heavily affect regional weather patterns by suppressing convection. When concentrations are high, decreased rainfall can yield negative societal and ecological impacts, potentially leading to drought. The Puerto Rican early rainfall season (ERS), spanning from 1 April through 31 July, overlaps with Saharan dust migration periods, and systematically detecting instances of SAL activity near the island is important for understanding longer-term drought-forcing trends in the region.

Becky With The Good Hair? The Perpetuation Of Eurocentric Dating Preferences, Black Women & Contemporary Dating Shows, Carolyne C. Tarver
LSU Master's Theses
ABSTRACT
This thesis examines perceptions of the portrayal of Black women in contemporary reality dating/romantic television shows, emphasizing the persistence of Eurocentric beauty standards and harmful stereotypes. In this thesis, I examine these stereotypes: Jezebel, Angry Black Woman, The Strong Black Woman, and The Rejected Black Woman, which I refer to as the "not my type" archetype/image. My research is significant for several reasons, including filling in the gap where previous literature surrounding reality TV, dating shows, and their impact on Black women was scarce. My research incorporates 25 interviews with Black women to examine audience reception towards representation and …

Theme And Variations On An African Chant, Kenneth Schafer
LSU Master's Theses
“When will I find my voice?” It is question that is sure to cross the mind of any young artist. While I personally believe there is no definite moment or piece that can mark the emergence of a personal voice, I do believe in breakthrough moments. We may listen to a new genre, come across a new ideology, hit on something by chance, visit a new country, or face some lifechanging event. Whatever the cause, the result is that a new facet of our identity has been illuminated and from this point onwards, it will affect our creation.

Revolting Drag: Filth, Horror, And The Queer Art Of Monstrosity, Claire-Scott A. Lynch
Revolting Drag: Filth, Horror, And The Queer Art Of Monstrosity, Claire-Scott A. Lynch
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis examines how The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula, a horror-themed reality drag competition series, uses monstrosity as a tool of queer resistance. In contrast to mainstream drag representations, which often promote assimilationist ideals, Dragula embraces filth, grotesqueries, and failure as strategies of disrupting normative structures. Grounded in queer theory and queer of color critique, this thesis uses thematic analysis to explore how Dragula mobilizes monstrosity to resist normative portrayals of queerness. Through close analysis of the show’s season finales, the study identifies three major themes: grotesque aesthetics, beyond the binary, and identity as resistance. These findings reveal how Dragula positions …
Metabolic Transitions In Embryos Of Artemia Franciscana: Regulation And Consequences For Oxidative Stress, Daniel Anthony Arabie
Metabolic Transitions In Embryos Of Artemia Franciscana: Regulation And Consequences For Oxidative Stress, Daniel Anthony Arabie
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Embryos of Artemia franciscana survive harsh conditions in diapause and anoxia-induced quiescence for years by undergoing deep metabolic transitions. I investigated the relationship between phosphorylation of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) and carbon flux to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle during metabolic depression. The difference in catalytic activity of the PDH complex (PDC) in maximally phosphorylated and dephosphorylated samples was 16.5-fold. Western blot analysis confirmed the changes in phosphorylation of PDH. Analysis of PDH expression in diapause and post-diapause embryos via phospho-PDH showed no significant differences. Investigation of post-diapause embryos under anoxia showed that phosphorylation of PDH decreased and activated the enzyme. …

Understanding climate change impacts on global marine ecosystems and fisheries requires complex marine ecosystem models, forced by global climate projections, that can robustly detect and project changes. The Fisheries and Marine Ecosystems Model Intercomparison Project (FishMIP) uses an ensemble modeling approach to fill this crucial gap. Yet FishMIP does not have a standardised skill assessment framework to quantify the ability of member models to reproduce past observations and to guide model improvement. In this study, we apply a comprehensive model skill assessment framework to a subset of global FishMIP models that produce historical fisheries catches. We consider a suite of …

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are combustion products present in substantial numbers on atmospheric particulate matter with half-lives of days to years. The mechanisms linking EPFR exposure and respiratory diseases are unclear, but likely involve oxidative stress. We investigated the mechanisms by which EPFR exposure impact on well-differentiated primary human nasal epithelial cells from subjects sensitive or resistant to oxidant stressors, cultured at an air-liquid interface. We found that EPFR exposure induced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) production; increased mitochondrial DNA copy number; down-regulated mucus production gene, Mucin-5AC (MUC5AC); up-regulated detoxifying gene, cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related …

Introduction: One factor that can influence whether someone will engage in secure firearm storage is having a suicide exposure (SE). Daruwala et al. (2018) examined this and found that individuals with an SE, without considering perceived closeness, did not significantly differ from those who did not have an SE in their firearm storage practices. Thus, the present study aimed to replicate and extend the research of Daruwala et al. (2018) by examining if the method of suicide (by firearm or other means) and closeness of suicide decedent relate to secure firearm storage practices. Methods: 308 male firearm owners completed self-report …

Stars and their associated planets originate from the same cloud of gas and dust, making a star’s elemental composition a valuable indicator for indirectly studying planetary compositions. While the connection between a star’s iron (Fe) abundance and the presence of giant exoplanets is established, the relationship with small planets remains unclear. The elements Mg, Si, and Fe are important in forming small planets. Employing machine learning algorithms like XGBoost, trained on the abundances (e.g., the Hypatia Catalog) of known exoplanet-hosting stars (NASA Exoplanet Archive), allows us to determine significant “features” (abundances or molar ratios) that may indicate the presence of …

Studying migration patterns driven by extreme environmental events is crucial for building a sustainable society and stable economy. Motivated by a real dataset about human migrations, this paper develops a transformed varying coefficient model for origin and destination (OD) regression to elucidate the complex associations of migration patterns with spatio-temporal dependencies and socioeconomic factors. Existing studies often overlook the dynamic effects of these factors in OD regression. Furthermore, with the increasing ease of collecting OD data, the scale of current OD regression data is typically large, necessitating the development of methods for efficiently fitting large-scale migration data. We address the …

Do Analysts’ Gross Margin Forecasts Influence Manager's Decisions To Recognize Inventory Losses?, Nusrat Jahan, Padmakumar Sivadasan
Do Analysts’ Gross Margin Forecasts Influence Manager's Decisions To Recognize Inventory Losses?, Nusrat Jahan, Padmakumar Sivadasan
Faculty Publications
Accounting standards require firms to write down their inventory when its market value (or net realizable value) drops below cost. Recognizing inventory write-downs decreases gross margins and increases scrutiny of managers’ inventory management practices. Further, it is difficult for market participants to assess inventory balances. Therefore, managers often delay recognizing inventory losses. Compared with other analysts, analysts who issue disaggregated gross margin (GM) forecasts evaluate a firm's inventories more closely, which should motivate managers to recognize expected inventory losses. Consistent with this prediction, managers’ likelihood of recognizing an expected inventory loss increases as more analysts provide GM forecasts. However, the …

We report the perpendicular critical field Hc2 properties of disordered Re-Al bilayers via magneto-transport measurements. The bilayers consisted of a d Re = 3 nm bottom layer of Re and an upper Al layer with thickness varying between dAl = 0 − 3 nm. We find that in this range of Al thicknesses, the bilayer transition temperature Tc increases with increasing Al thickness, although their monolayer counterparts have T c Re > T c Al . Furthermore, Hc2 of the bilayers has a local maximum at an Al coverage of 1.5 nm with a critical field that is 50% larger than …

Fast Dynamic Ejecta In Neutron Star Mergers, Stephan Rosswog, Nikhil Sarin, Ehud Nakar, Peter Diener

The ejection of neutron-rich matter is one of the most important consequences of a neutron star merger. While the bulk of the matter is ejected at fast, but non-relativistic velocities (∼ 0.2c), a small amount of mildly relativistic dynamic ejecta have been seen in a number of numerical simulations. Such ejecta can have far-reaching observational consequences ranging from the shock breakout burst of gamma-rays promptly after the merger, to an early (∼ 1 h post-merger) blue kilonova precursor signal, to synchrotron emission years after the merger (‘kilonova afterglow’). These all potentially carry the imprint of the binary system parameters and …

The ability to control absorption by modifying the polarization of light presents an exciting opportunity to experimentally determine the orbital alignment of absorption features. Here, attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy is used to investigate the polarization dependence of core exciton dynamics in LiF thin films at the Li+K edge. XUV pulses excite electrons from the Li 1s core level into the conduction band, allowing for the formation of a p-orbital-like core exciton, aligned along the XUV light polarization axis. A sub-5 fs near-infrared (NIR) probe pulse then arrives at variable time delays, perturbing the XUV-excited states and allowing …

We show that by combining strong-field dressing and resonant propagation of XUV pulses, the transition of absorption lines from their natural Lorentzian profiles through Fano and complex multipeak shapes all the way back to broadened near-Lorentzian profiles can be achieved, in the limit of optically thick samples. The final stage of this spectral modification can be understood in terms of a significant temporal stretching and delay of the resonant XUV pulse as it propagates through the dense gas, which alters the ultrafast absorption that is modified by the time-synchronized few-femtosecond laser pulse. We first demonstrate this concept in numerical calculations, …

Time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy is used to investigate the physicochemical interactions between positively charged, hydrophobic, drug-like molecules and the plasma membrane of human cells (nonsmall cell lung cancer, H596). In the present study, molecular adsorption and transport of the cationic molecules, malachite green (MG) and malachite green isothiocyanate (MGITC), are studied in real time in living H596 cells and in dead, fixed H596 cells. MGITC is shown to have stronger adsorption and more rapid transport kinetics as compared to MG due to increased dipole-dipole interactions. Additionally, MGITC is found to have faster adsorption and transport kinetics in living …

How Financial Aid Affects The Odds Of Study Abroad Participation For Students Of Color, Patrick Newcomb
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Prior research has shown that studying abroad provides students with enriching, diverse educational experiences with positive personal, academic, and professional outcomes. Despite the benefits, only a small portion of American higher education students participate in study abroad programs. Students of color disproportionately study abroad at lower rates than White students. Since cost is often cited as the primary barrier preventing education abroad, this study examined the types of financial aid associated with study abroad access and participation.
This study used data from the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, which is a nationwide dataset designed to represent the makeup of institutions …

Approximations Of Koopman Operator Semigroups, Ibrahem Al Jabea
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The main purpose of this dissertation is to study approximation methods for nonlinear systems using Bernhard Koopman's Global Linearization Method or Sophus Lie's method of continuous transformation groups. This approach enables the application of linear semigroup methods to a nonlinear system by focusing on the dynamics of the observables of the states, rather than directly studying the dynamics of the states. In this dissertation, we studied the pointwise semigroup and introduce the modified space $C_m(\Omega)$ and the modified Koopman-Lie semigroups. We use a splitting operator and outline a systematic approach for approximating the pointwise Koopman-Lie semigroup flows \begin{equation*} t\to T(t)g(x) …

Audience Participation Structures In The Concert Hall And D, Me, You, We, A Non-Opera For Actor, Chatbot, Musicians, And Audience, Treya Michelle Nash
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Audience participation in the concert hall space has developed into a rich participatory practice with specific characteristics and challenges. Though composers—especially since the 1960s—have written many pieces involving audience participation, asking the concert hall audience to participate remains uncommon. Attempting to shift the role of the audience in such a traditionally spectator-oriented space can lead to tensions that undermine the efficacy of the experience. This research categorizes participatory pieces into the structural elements of performance and facilitation forces, audience groupings, audience roles, and communication types. These structures are used to discuss the complicated relationship between control and agency within participatory …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Classical novae and Type I X-ray bursts are stellar explosions that occur in binary systems, where nuclear reactions involving 19Ne play a crucial role in nucleosynthesis. In novae, the destruction of 18F via the 18F(p,alpha)15O reaction significantly affects the amount of 18F remaining in the ejecta, directly influencing the detectability of predicted 511-keV gamma rays. However, discrepancies between observed and predicted 18F abundances highlight uncertainties in the reaction rates, primarily due to unknown properties of resonances in the compound nucleus 19Ne. In Type I X-ray bursts, the 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne reaction …

The Passive-Active Interaction (Pai) Model: Redefining Audio Interactions In Video Game Music, Morgan A. Weeks
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Scholarship on music in video games has focused on the player in two main ways: the psychological effect music has on the player and the physical, kinesthetic relationship between the player’s inputs and the game’s music. This dissertation builds on this work by exploring gameplay moments in which the music informs the player’s inputs through rhythms, tempo, harmonic relationships, and changes in the musical texture. Using “analytical play” (Summers 2016), rhythmic analysis, looping analysis, and harmonic observations, alongside a variety of different video games, consoles and genres, I have developed an analytical Passive-Active Interaction (PAI) Model that is applicable to …
