Magnetars are the most highly magnetized neutron stars in the cosmos (with magnetic field 1013–1015 G). Giant flares from magnetars are rare, short-duration (about 0.1 s) bursts of hard X-rays and soft γ rays1,2. Owing to the limited sensitivity and energy coverage of previous telescopes, no magnetar giant flare has been detected at gigaelectronvolt (GeV) energies. Here, we report the discovery of GeV emission from a magnetar giant flare on 15 April 2020 (refs. 3,4 and A. J. Castro-Tirado et al., manuscript in preparation). The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected GeV γ rays …

R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars are rare hydrogen-deficient carbon-rich variable supergiants thought to be the result of dynamically unstable white dwarf mergers. We attempt to model RCB stars through all the relevant timescales by simulating a merger event in Octo-tiger, a 3D adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamics code, and mapping the post-merger object into MESA, a 1D stellar evolution code. We then post-process the nucleosynthesis on a much larger nuclear reaction network to study the enhancement of s-process elements. We present models that match observations or previous studies in most surface abundances, isotopic ratios, early evolution, and lifetimes. We also …

Reduced-Order Fast Converging Observers For Systems With Discrete Measurements And Measurement Error, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Zhong Ping Jiang
Faculty Publications
We provide novel reduced-order observer designs for continuous-time nonlinear systems with measurement error. Our first result applies to systems with continuous output measurements, and provides observers that converge in a fixed finite time that is independent of the initial state when the measurement error is zero. Our second result applies under discrete measurements, and provides observers that converge asymptotically with a rate of convergence that is proportional to the negative of the logarithm of the size of a sampling interval. Our observers satisfy an enhanced input-to-state stability property with respect to the measurement error, in which an overshoot term only …

We examine nucleon-nucleon realistic interactions, based on their SU(3) decomposition to SU(3)-symmetric components. We find that many of these interaction components are negligible, which, in turn, allows us to identify a subset of physically relevant components that are sufficient to describe the structure of low-lying states in C12 and related observables, such as excitation energies, electric quadrupole transitions, and rms radii. We find that paring down the interaction by half or more yields results that practically coincide with the corresponding ab initio calculations with the full interaction. In addition, we show that while various realistic interactions differ in their SU(3) …

Polyurethane (PU) foams reinforced with bamboo fiber sources in China, i.e., bamboo fiber, bamboo α-cellulose fiber, and bamboo nanocellulose fiber, were prepared and their physico-mechanical properties were analyzed in this work. The bamboo fiber sources and PU foams were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and universal compression testing. The results indicated that the hydroxyl groups on the fiber surfaces were enhanced by removing non-celluloses in the preparation of α-cellulose and nanocellulose. With the addition of small particle size α-cellulose and nanocellulose, the cell sizes of PU foams were reduced due …

Stakeholder’S Risk Perceptions Ofwild Pigs: Is There A Gender Difference?, Maria Bampasidou, Michael D. Kaller, Shaun M. Tanger
Faculty Publications
Substantial literature indicates that genders differ in terms of risk perception and values regarding wildlife management. Lack of equal stakeholder representation is also documented, which can also impact the effectiveness of human-wildlife conflict resolution interventions and education and outreach efforts. This paper investigates gender differences in perceptions about risks and potential adverse impacts on production, health, environment, safety, and population management posed by wild pigs. A survey was used to collect data from a random sample of adult residents (N = 1221) in Louisiana. We analyzed responses from 226 female and 832 male producers. We observed differences in how these …

Physiology Of Energy Intake In The Weight-Reduced State, Hans Rudolf Berthoud, Randy J. Seeley, Susan B. Roberts
Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications
Physiological adaptations to intentional weight loss can facilitate weight regain. This review summarizes emerging findings on hypothalamic and brainstem circuitry in the regulation of body weight and identifies promising areas for research to improve therapeutic interventions for sustainable weight loss. There is good evidence that body weight is actively regulated in a homeostatic fashion similar to other physiological parameters. However, the defended level of body weight is not fixed but rather depends on environmental conditions and genetic background in an allostatic fashion. In an environment with plenty of easily available energy-dense food and low levels of physical activity, prone individuals …

A Generalized Approach For Sperm Cryopreservation In The Genus Pomoxis: Sperm Cryopreservation And Fertilization Efficiency Of Black-Stripe Black Crappie, Pomoxis Nigromaculatus, Christian A. Shirley, Michael E. Colvin, Terrence R. Tiersch, Peter J. Allen
Faculty Publications
Approaches for white crappie, Pomoxis annularis sperm cryopreservation have led to interest in applying similar methods to black-stripe black crappie, Pomoxis nigromaculatus. Their rarity in wild populations makes them a preferred phenotype for hatchery use. Sperm cryopreservation procedures were compared between black-stripe black crappie and white crappie for sperm motility and egg fertilization rate. There was no difference in black-stripe black crappie sperm motility after thawing between 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, 45% motility) and 10% methanol (50% motility). However, fertilization rates were higher (p <.001) for sperm cryoprotected with 5% DMSO (38 ± 8%) than 10% methanol (22 ± 7%). Hatchery use requires sperm-to-egg ratios and fertilizing potential of single doses (i.e., 0.5 ml straw). Using black-stripe black crappie sperm (2.5 × 108 sperm/ml; 5% DMSO), the highest fertilization (27%) was found using single straws with 785 eggs (0.25 ml); total sperm:egg ratio: 159,000:1; motile sperm:egg ratio: 71,700:1. Therefore, sperm of two Pomoxis species could be cryopreserved using 350 mOsmol/kg Hanks' balanced salt solution as an extender, 5% DMSO as a cryoprotectant, cooling at 40°C/min, and thawing for 8 s at 40°C to maintain sperm motility and fertility. Basic protocols can be generalized within a genus if variables such as sperm concentration, process timing, and sample volumes are controlled.

The umami intensity of single flavor enhancer was detected by an electronic tongue and human sensory. The linear fit was performed to unravel the concentration–response values correlations of eight flavor enhancers. The electronic tongue response data were then analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant factor analysis (DFA) method. It was found that the umami response value of the electronic tongue and the flavor enhancer concentration showed a semi-logarithmic function. Moreover, the PCA and DFA could successfully distinguish the variety and concentration of flavor enhancer. The umami intensities were also assessed by human sensory and showed consistency with those …

Determination Of Ligustrazine In Rat Serum By Polymer Monolithic Micro-Extraction Combined With Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Danling Sun, Xitian Peng, Maomin Peng, Xian Zhang, Hong Xia, Zhimin Xu, Xizhou Hu
Faculty Publications
This study focused on developing an effective and environmentally friendly method to measure ligustrazine in rat serum by using polymer monolith micro-extraction (PMME) technique. A poly (methacrylic acid-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) material was used to extract ligustrazine through hydrophobic and ion-exchange interaction. Qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed by a liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. After optimization of several PMME conditions, the developed method exhibited excellent extraction performance to the ligustrazine. Good linearity was acquired ranging from 10 to 2,000 ng mL-1, and the limit of detection of the proposed method was 0.14 ng mL-1. The recoveries measured by spiking …

Global Well-Posedness For The Logarithmically Energy-Supercritical Nonlinear Wave Equation With Partial Symmetry, Aynur Bulut, Benjamin Dodson
Faculty Publications
We establish global well-posedness and scattering results for the logarithmically energy-supercritical nonlinear wave equation, under the assumption that the initial data satisfies a partial symmetry condition. These results generalize and extend work of Tao in the radially symmetric setting. The techniques involved include weighted versions of Morawetz and Strichartz estimates, with weights adapted to the partial symmetry assumptions. In an appendix, we establish a corresponding quantitative result for the energy-critical problem.

Microstructure-Sensitive Estimation Of Fatigue Life Using Cyclic Thermodynamic Entropy As An Index For Metals, Arash P. Jirandehi, M. M. Khonsari
Faculty Publications
A technique for fatigue life prediction of metals is presented based on a microstructure-sensitive estimation of plastic strain energy per cycle. The approach enables rapid prediction of temperature evolution, estimation of cyclic plastic energy, and fracture fatigue entropy. Theoretical and experimental results are presented for low-carbon steel 1018 and aluminum 7075-T6 specimens. It is shown that the approach realistically predicts the fatigue life of metallic specimens.

Butanol seems to be an eligible fuel for compensating for the increasing fuel consumption. Biobutanol could be produced from local sources in the place of use. Its properties show similar results to gasoline, so biobutanol could be added as a biocomponent into fuels. Important properties, in the case of blending biobutanol into gasoline, are its fluid properties and their dependence on the temperature. Therefore, in this paper, the volumetric mass density and viscosity of the selected ratios between biobutanol and gasoline (0, 5, 10, 85, 100 vol.%) were tested over the temperature range from -10 °C up to 40 °C. …
