Power Structures, Michael A. Whitehead
Power Structures, Michael A. Whitehead
LSU Master's Theses
Power Structures is a series of drawings and prints inspired by my fixation with the intricate utilitarian architecture and dystopian atmosphere of Louisiana’s petrochemical corridor. The architectural forms within this body of work juxtapose components of disparate industrial sites to form ruinous monuments to power and progress. The Power Structures are composites of photographs, technical drawings, and memories I have made in my time studying Cancer Alley. I introduce machined aircraft components, gate valves, and various fasteners into the architectural forms of petrochemical plants as elements of misdirection, blurring the line between reality and memory, fact and fabrication.
[Thoughts On] The Painter & The Act Of Painting, Samantha Rosado
[Thoughts On] The Painter & The Act Of Painting, Samantha Rosado
LSU Master's Theses
In the satirical manifesto that accompanies my work, humor, and sarcasm play an important role in understanding the narrator’s tone. The information included is both factual and imagined, pulled from stories and experiences of a group of painters. My hope is to help aspiring painters develop their own rules and philosophies based on what they learn through the canon of art history. As a writer I aim to motivate those who feel under-represented in the world of fine art and craft to reject feelings of inadequacy. As an artist I make with the intention of being vulnerable and honest.
Neverending Loop, Joseph Nivens
Neverending Loop, Joseph Nivens
LSU Master's Theses
The intention of NeverEnding Loop is to depict the trauma of queer adolescense contrasted by the shadow of the closet that follows LGBTQ+ children into adulthood. The reality for queer people is that coming out is a process that never ends and a task that can create a lonely existence for those that are different from the norm. The artwork aims to convey the very real and confusing struggle of finding your identity as a queer person existing in a heterosexual world.
NeverEnding Loop explores loops and cycles in short animations, sculptural forms with repeating imagery, and mixed media forms …
Characterizing Receptive Vocabulary Knowledge In Minimally Verbal Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Allison Menting
Characterizing Receptive Vocabulary Knowledge In Minimally Verbal Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Allison Menting
LSU Master's Theses
Background: Delayed or impaired language skills are common characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Currently, there is little research examining the receptive language profile in children with ASD, and even less is known about children with ASD who are minimally verbal. The current study aimed to characterize the receptive vocabulary profile of minimally verbal children with ASD and to examine whether this profile differs from their typically developing peers. Methods: Participants included 31 minimally verbal children with ASD, aged 60-118 months, who were reported to produce between 0-10 words, 124 typical developing toddlers, aged 9-14 months, who were …

Assessment Of Endogenous Biomass Decay As A Source Of Precursors For Microbially-Mediated Toluene And P-Cresol Production, Samuel J. Reynolds
LSU Master's Theses
The research reported in this thesis was conducted to investigate whether protein hydrolysis associated with endogenous decay of biomass produced following the addition of a readily fermentable substrate is a potential source of precursors that can ultimately be transformed to toluene and p-cresol in environments undergoing enhanced bioremediation.
A packed column intended to represent a laboratory-scale section of an aquifer was seeded with groundwater and then supplied with molasses-amended groundwater for a two-day interval. The injected molasses concentration and surface loading rate were selected to be representative of conditions in the vicinity of injection wells at a Superfund Site …
Body/Mind:Matter, Mary Ellen Ratcliff
Body/Mind:Matter, Mary Ellen Ratcliff
LSU Master's Theses
Body/Mind:Matter presents the unfiltered experiences of living in a period of momentous instability. Three life-sized figurative sculptures stage my emotional journey towards mindfulness as a direct response to the pandemic and my growing concern for our collective future. A winding network of crocheted yarns and growing vines interweave the troubled figures to signify our complex dependencies upon one another and our environment.
The condition of the encumbered bodies is a result of the worried mind. Revitalized matter proposes reconciliation by introducing a sense of hope; decaying surfaces reveal new life; fused wires hold up under immense pressure; and soft woven …

Penguins Past And Present: Trace Elements, Stable Isotopes, And Population Dynamics In Antarctic And Sub-Antarctic Penguins And Seals, Allyson K. Kristan
LSU Master's Theses
Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic are remote regions where the impacts from climate change and anthropogenic activities are increasingly apparent. Previous studies show that the Antarctic is warming and has been affected by anthropogenic contaminants. Marine predators such as penguins and seals are commonly used in these regions as sentinels of ecosystem health as predator tissues can be used as non-invasive proxies of diet, population trends, and contaminant exposure. This thesis includes two separate studies which investigate the influence of climate change and human activity on Antarctic and sub-Antarctic ecosystems. First, Adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) eggshell samples were collected …

The intertwisted helix framework of the chiral FeSi-type structure with the space group P213 (S.G. P213) inspired us to investigate other non-centrosymmetric compounds, particularly 111-type phases with different FeSi frameworks. Various FeSi-containing 111-type phases have been summarized according to their valence electron counts and space group. In this work we have focused on the non-centrosymmetric TiFeSi phase. The crystal structure analysis of the hexagonal Fe2P-type and the reported orthorhombic TiFeSi-type (α-TiFeSi) indicate a superlattice relationship exists between the two structures, which drove us to perform the total energy calculations of the hexagonal and orthorhombic models of TiFeSi. Following the theoretical …

Fun House, Stephanie Cobb
Fun House, Stephanie Cobb
LSU Master's Theses
The expression “fun house” seems empathetic and joyful, but has potentially melancholy connotations. Fun houses are participatory. They allow guests to move freely through their colorful halls. At the same time, they do not organize guest’s experience. Usually, we are thoughtful of all possible contingencies that make the world so unpredictable. We prefer certainty to doubt and try to avoid risks. However, reason and order have limits. To feel alive, we must take risks. The connotation of the paintings in Fun House may imply either a sunny mood through tenderness between figures or a tense ambivalence that lingers in their …
The King Of Witchcraft: Scotland's Witchcraft Crisis And Religious Politics Under King James Vi, Tristan Rimmer
The King Of Witchcraft: Scotland's Witchcraft Crisis And Religious Politics Under King James Vi, Tristan Rimmer
LSU Master's Theses
In 1590 King James VI of Scotland was the supposed target of diabolical witchcraft; the North Berwick witches were accused of attempting to sink the ship carrying James and his new bride from Copenhagen back to Edinburgh following their marriage. This event set off a widespread witch-hunt in Scotland, one that James took a personal and vested interest in. The hunt continued through 1597, occurring across multiple Scottish locales, resulting in judicial statute rearrangements, and famously inspiring James’ treatise Daemonologie. In addition to Daemonlogie, James also wrote multiple treatises on the theory of divine right in the midst …

Variability In The Hamburg Wheel-Tracking Device (Hwtd) Data And Results, Ilerioluwa S. Giwa
LSU Master's Theses
Over the years, the Hamburg Wheel-Tracking Test (HWTT) has become one of the most popular devices used for characterizing asphalt mixtures for rutting potential and moisture susceptibility. However, although the HWTT is a reliable standard test for evaluating asphalt mixtures, it is not exempt from variability in the test data and result. Variability in the HWTT test data and results have been majorly attributed to imprecision in the test practice and due to some limitations in the HWT device setup.
The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the variability in the HWTT data and result by investigating a …
Hello Again يا اهلا A Study Of Grief, Diana Abouchacra
Hello Again يا اهلا A Study Of Grief, Diana Abouchacra
LSU Master's Theses
Grief is an unwanted visitor who we all come to know throughout our lifetime. Although every person reacts differently to bereavement of a loved one, almost always the lost other becomes etched into our being for the remainder of our lives (McClocklin & Lengelle, 2017). In today’s society, we are encouraged to say “Good-bye”, but what if instead, we allow ourselves to keep those who have passed on close to our hearts and say hello again? Hello Again يا اهلا is a body of work that explores my experience with grief. The artworks made for this exhibition investigate my process …
On Properties Of Weil Sums Of Binomials, Liem P. Nguyen
On Properties Of Weil Sums Of Binomials, Liem P. Nguyen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores questions regarding the Weil sum of binomials, a finite field character sum originated from information theory. The Weil spectrum counts distinct values of the Weil sum through invertible elements in the finite field. The value of these sums and the size of the Weil spectrum are of particular interest, as they link problems in information theory, coding theory, and cryptography to other areas of math such as number theory and arithmetic geometry. In the setting of Niho exponents, we prove the Vanishing Conjecture of Helleseth ($1971$) on the presence of zero values in the Weil spectrum and …
High Density Cement-Rock Interface Characterization, Zahid Farid
High Density Cement-Rock Interface Characterization, Zahid Farid
LSU Master's Theses
The strength and stability of a well depends primarily on the seal that is created between a geologic formation and a wellbore cement. To protect and maintain this well integrity during production and after well abandonment, fixed seals are installed in the wellbore. For this purpose, Portland cement of class H and G are used throughout the world as a plugging and sealing material for offshore oil and gas wells. The cement-rock interface is an area of vulnerability with a pathway that provides possible routes for leakage out into the wellbore environment and in the proximity of the seals. Therefore, …
Joseph Ducreux And The Physiognomical Millieu, Josiah Phelps
Joseph Ducreux And The Physiognomical Millieu, Josiah Phelps
LSU Master's Theses
Joseph Ducreux was an eighteenth-century artist from Nancy, France, whose grimacing self-portraits made their way into to the Parisian Salons during the age of the French Revolution. His self-portraits showcased himself in a state of yawning, state of laughing, state of self-confidence, and state of fear. This series is believed to derive from his study of physiognomy and his knowledge of physiognomical studies by such Enlightenment scholars as Johann Kasper Lavater. It will contextualize Ducreux’s his oeuvre of self-portraits and his commercial portraits including those previously executed for the French court, with the influence of the pseudo-science of physiognomy. The …

Implementation Of Dietary Methionine Restriction Using Casein After Selective, Oxidative Deletion Of Methionine, Han Fang, Kirsten P. Stone, Laura A. Forney, Landon C. Sims, Gabriela C. Gutierrez, Sujoy Ghosh, Thomas W. Gettys
Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications
Dietary methionine restriction (MR) is normally implemented using diets formulated from elemental amino acids (AA) that reduce methionine content to ∼0.17%. However, translational implementation of MR with elemental AA-based diets is intractable due to poor palatability. To solve this problem and restrict methionine using intact proteins, casein was subjected to mild oxidation to selectively reduce methionine. Diets were then formulated using oxidized casein, adding back methionine to produce a final concentration of 0.17%. The biological efficacy of dietary MR using the oxidized casein (Ox Cas) diet was compared with the standard elemental MR diet in terms of the behavioral, metabolic, …
Light Coupling Structures And Switches For Plasmonic Coaxial Waveguides, Amirreza Mahigir, Georgios Veronis
Light Coupling Structures And Switches For Plasmonic Coaxial Waveguides, Amirreza Mahigir, Georgios Veronis
Faculty Publications
We introduce wavelength-scale light coupling structures and switches for plasmonic coaxial waveguides. We first consider single-slit structures optimized for a wavelength of 1550 nm and find that, when the slit is on resonance, the coupling to the plasmonic coaxial waveguide is maximized. We also observe that for optimized double- and triple-slit structures, the coupling efficiency is enhanced compared to the single-slit structure by factors of ˜3.02 and ˜4.21, respectively. We find that, in the case of double- and triple-slit structures, the surface plasmons excited at the metal-air interface enhance light coupling to the plasmonic coaxial waveguide via the slits. In …

Evidence For Perchlorate-Coupled Molybdenum And Nickel Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase Co Oxidation And Characterization Of Novel Perchlorate-Reducing Haloarchaea, Marisa Russell Myers
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Carbon monoxide (CO) has been exploited as a microbial energy source for much of life’s evolutionary history. A phylogenetically diverse array of microorganisms can oxidize CO using two distinct CO dehydrogenases, molybdenum-dependent (Mo-CODH) and nickel-dependent (Ni-CODH). Aerobes and facultative organisms contain Mo-CODHs which allow them to utilize oxygen as an electron acceptor in addition to alternatives such as nitrate and sulfate. Obligate anaerobic organisms contain Ni-CODHs, which oxidize CO at elevated concentrations, but cannot utilize oxygen. In systems where organic matter deposits are limited or absent, atmospheric trace gases such as CO are thought to assist in supporting the growth …
Applications Of Nonstandard Analysis In Probability And Measure Theory, Irfan Alam
Applications Of Nonstandard Analysis In Probability And Measure Theory, Irfan Alam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation broadly deals with two areas of probability theory and investigates how methods from nonstandard analysis may provide new perspectives in these topics. In particular, we use nonstandard analysis to prove new results in the topics of limiting spherical integrals and of exchangeability.
In the former area, our methods allow us to represent finite dimensional Gaussian measures in terms of marginals of measures on hyperfinite-dimensional spheres in a certain strong sense, thus generalizing some previously known results on Gaussian Radon transforms as limits of spherical integrals. This first area has roots in the kinetic theory of gases, which is …
The Role Of School Sociocultural Factors On The Mental Health And Academic Competence Of Elementary Aged Children, Aijah Kai Baruti Goodwin
The Role Of School Sociocultural Factors On The Mental Health And Academic Competence Of Elementary Aged Children, Aijah Kai Baruti Goodwin

We report on the population of 47 compact binary mergers detected with a false-alarm rate of (BBH) population not discernible until now. First, the primary mass spectrum contains structure beyond a power law with a sharp high-mass cutoff; it is more consistent with a broken power law with a break at 39.7-+9.120.3 M? or a power law with a Gaussian feature peaking at 33.1-+5.64.0 M? (90% credible interval). While the primary mass distribution must extend to ~65 M? or beyond, only 2.9-+1.73.5% of systems have primary masses greater than 45 M?. Second, we find that a fraction of BBH systems …

Systematic Investigation Of Bulk And Surface Properties Of Sr3(Ru1-Xmnx)2o7, Yifan Yang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have attracted considerable interest due to the intriguing interactions between spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom. The delicate balance between these interactions can be altered by doping, symmetry breaking and other external stimuli such as pressure, electric, and magnetic field. The Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) family of ruthenates, Srn+1RunO3n+1, is a prototype of TMOs with stacking octahedra along the c axis, and the intra- and inter-octahedral structures are known to be crucial to both electronic and magnetic properties. In this thesis, we focus on studying the effect of chemical doping and broken symmetry at the surface of …

Fan Fiction And The Trojan War: Contemporary Euripidean Perspective On The Treatment Of Enslaved Women In The Silence Of The Girls, A Thousand Ships, And For The Most Beautiful, Richard K. Sheldon
LSU Master's Theses
This study examines three contemporary novels of fan fiction, authored by women, that retell the Trojan War: Emily Hauser’s For the Most Beautiful (2016), Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls (2018), and Nathalie Haynes’ A Thousand Ships (2019). This study offers a reading of contemporary Homeric reception by analyzing the conversations that the novels initiate between each other, Homer’s Iliad, and Euripides’ tragedies, Hecuba (424 BCE) and Trojan Women (415 BCE). The study establishes a connection between the three authors and Euripides by treating the novels as works of fan fiction. In so doing, the study identifies …
