The Examination Of Racial Identity Of Black Males Through Self-Efficacy, Social Integration, Persistence, And Mentorship At A Predominantly White Institution, Marvin Earl Dupiton
The Examination Of Racial Identity Of Black Males Through Self-Efficacy, Social Integration, Persistence, And Mentorship At A Predominantly White Institution, Marvin Earl Dupiton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Black males account for 4.3% of the total enrollment at four-year postsecondary institutions in the United States. The percentage of Black men who are enrolled in college is nearly the same as it was in 1976 (Harper, 2006a; Palmer & Strayhorn, 2008; Strayhorn, 2008a, 2010). With this low exponential growth of Black males attending institutions of higher education, there is the assumption that institutions have not done much to provide for this population of students that are recruited consistently to attend these universities. Black males do not have enough resources to reassure their cultural masculinity as well develop as an …
Bim-Based Generative Modular Housing Design And Implications For Post-Disaster Housing Recovery, Pedram Ghannad
Bim-Based Generative Modular Housing Design And Implications For Post-Disaster Housing Recovery, Pedram Ghannad
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The adverse social and financial impacts of catastrophic disasters are increasing as population centers grow. After disastrous events, the government agencies must respond to post-disaster housing issues quickly and efficiently and provide sufficient resources for the reconstruction of destroyed and damaged houses for full rehabilitation. However, post-disaster housing reconstruction is a highly complex process because of the large number of projects, shortage of resources, and heavy pressure for delivery of the projects after a disastrous event. This complexity and lack of an inconsistent, systematic approach for planning lead to an ad-hoc decision-making process and inefficient recovery. This research explored modular …
To Be Read: The Educational Opportunities Of Booktube, Anita M. Dubroc
To Be Read: The Educational Opportunities Of Booktube, Anita M. Dubroc
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
BookTube, a literary-focused subcommunity of YouTube, is a network of readers where educational theory and literary theory collide. BookTube is known for delving out book reviews and showing off book hauls, but its content creators, known as booktubers, do much more than display walls of colorful hardback books. The BookTube community is a networked knowledge community (Sorensen & Mara, 2014) in which informal knowledge is valued as much as the formal knowledge attained in classrooms. Online book reviews on sites such as Amazon and Goodreads have demonstrated the waning influence of professional book reviewers because now any reader take on …
Neuromuscular Control Strategy During Object Transport While Walking: Adaptive Integration Of Upper And Lower Limb Movements, Ahyoung Song
Neuromuscular Control Strategy During Object Transport While Walking: Adaptive Integration Of Upper And Lower Limb Movements, Ahyoung Song
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
When carrying an object while walking, a significant challenge for the central nervous system (CNS) is to preserve the object’s stability against the inter-segmental interaction torques and ground reaction forces. Studies documented several strategies used by the CNS: modulation of grip force (GF), alterations in upper limb kinematics, and gait adaptations. However, the question of how the CNS organizes the multi-segmental joint and muscle coordination patterns to deal with gait-induced perturbations remains poorly understood. This dissertation aimed to explore the neuromuscular control strategy utilized by the CNS to transport an object during walking successfully. Study 1 examined the inter-limb coordination …

A Semiotic Approach To Visual Analysis Of Dress: Symbolic Communication Of Clothing Color, Cut, And Composition Through The French Film Costumes Of Anaïs Romand, Leigh Danielle Honeycutt
LSU Master's Theses
This study examines the communicative role of clothing in film. Using the skillful costume canvas of French designer Anaïs Romand, we explore the possible visual messages and potential cultural and linguistic meanings that clothing choice conveys. This analysis uses Roland Barthes’ Theory of the “Five Codes” from his book S/Z as well as psychological sources about color analysis as its methodological basis. Images from each of the five period piece films were chosen and analyzed using semiotics. The costumes in all five films chosen for analysis were designed under the direction of Anaïs Romand and were all either nominated for, …
Effects Of Wetland Management And Associated Abiotic Factors On Rare Plant Communities Of Spring-Fed Arid Wetlands, Antonio Cantu De Leija
Effects Of Wetland Management And Associated Abiotic Factors On Rare Plant Communities Of Spring-Fed Arid Wetlands, Antonio Cantu De Leija
LSU Master's Theses
Spring-fed arid wetlands support high biological productivity and are hotspots for endemism and distribution of rare plants, making them areas of high conservation value. These systems are driven by complex interactions among groundwater discharge and the geomorphic and climatic features of the setting, which provide gradients of edaphic conditions, particularly soil moisture and salinity that influence the presence and abundance of rare plant communities. However, spring-fed arid wetlands are at particular risk of increases in salinity and drier hydrological regimes due to anthropogenic activities. Such alterations to abiotic conditions may jeopardize the distribution and abundance of rare plants by exceeding …

A comprehensive FEM parametric study was then carried out to evaluate the performance of the system …
Optimization Of Mechanical Properties At The Infarct Border Zone, Kaushik Sunder
Optimization Of Mechanical Properties At The Infarct Border Zone, Kaushik Sunder
LSU Master's Theses
A myocardial infarction (MI) occurs every 39 seconds in the United States. As of 2016, an estimated 550,000 new and 200,000 recurrent episodes of myocardial infarction (MI) occur each year in the United States was. Infarction is often distinguished by a considerable decrease in wall thickness and an increase in heart size or left ventricular volume. This behavior happens when there is a prolonged lack of blood flow, usually due to damage or clotting, which causes cardiomyocytes to die (CMs). The development of non-contractile infarct scarring is the primary pathophysiology of MI. While the infarct scar prevents myocardial rupture during …
An Improved Earned Value Management Method Integrating Quality And Safety, Brian Briggs
An Improved Earned Value Management Method Integrating Quality And Safety, Brian Briggs
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The construction industry invests significant time and money to improve quality and safety while reducing cost and schedule impacts. The industry has a sincere desire to improve construction project management methods to improve efficiency. Historically, quality and safety underperformances result from undermanaged quality control and safety activities. The cost and schedule impacts associated with poor quality work have always had an impact on construction operations. The unprecedented challenges and uncertainties of COVID-19 highlighted the need to improve the Earned Value Management (EVM) method within construction to reflect these quality and safety activities. The central goal of this dissertation is to …

A central focus of evolutionary biology is inferring the historical relationships among species and using this context to learn about how evolution has shaped diverse organisms these historical relationships are represented by phylogenetic trees, and the methods used to infer these trees have been an active area of research for several decades. Despite this attention, phylogenetic workflows have changed little, even though extraordinary advances have occurred in the scale and pace at which genomic data have been collected in the past 20 years. Modern phylogenomic datasets have also raised fascinating new questions. Why do different parts of a genome often …
Understanding Potassium Toxicity Stress Responses Of The Extremophyte Schrenkiella Parvula Using Systems Biology Approaches, Pramod Pantha
Understanding Potassium Toxicity Stress Responses Of The Extremophyte Schrenkiella Parvula Using Systems Biology Approaches, Pramod Pantha
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Schrenkiella parvula is an extremophyte model closely related to Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica crops. Its natural habitat includes shores of saline lakes in the Irano-Turanian region. It has adapted to grow in soils rich in multiple salts including Na+ and K+. I have investigated the genetic basis for high K+ tolerance in plants using S. parvula as a stress tolerant model compared to the premier plant model, Arabidopsis thaliana which is highly sensitive to salt stresses using physiological, ionomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic approaches. Under high K+ stress, root system architecture changes significantly compared to control …
Examining Intraindividual Variability As A Predictor Of Cognitive And Functional Decline In Older Adulthood, Alyssa N. De Vito
Examining Intraindividual Variability As A Predictor Of Cognitive And Functional Decline In Older Adulthood, Alyssa N. De Vito
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Intraindividual variability (IIV) has recently emerged as a promising early indicator of future cognitive decline (Haynes et al., 2017). However, the literature is currently limited in that the majority of studies have only examined IIV in one cognitive domain: reaction time. Explorations into the relationship between IIV and functional status are also sparse, with only one recent study exploring this relationship (Schmitter-Edgecombe et al., 2020). The present study aimed to address gaps in the literature by examining IIV in differing cognitive domains to determine which measure(s) were the best predictors of cognitive and functional status at baseline as well as …
Dependability And Reliability Of The Direct Behavior Rating Classroom Management Forms, Kaitlin Angela Cassidy
Dependability And Reliability Of The Direct Behavior Rating Classroom Management Forms, Kaitlin Angela Cassidy
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Classroom management skills are evidence-based strategies used to maintain a positive and productive learning environment. Utilizing classroom management strategies has been proven effective; however, limited tools are available for assessing such skills and further assessment of the reliability and dependability of such measures is needed. The Direct Behavior Rating – Classroom Management (DBR-CM) forms are measures for assessing classroom management and come in three forms: external rater (DBR-CM ER), self-report (DBR-CM SR), and student rater (DBR-CM ST). This study extended on the information obtained from the Cassidy (2018) study that examined the DBR-CM ER form. The study evaluated the inter-observer …
Late Miocene Unroofing Of The Inner Lesser Himalaya Recorded In The Nw Himalaya Foreland Basin, Elise Marie Exnicios
Late Miocene Unroofing Of The Inner Lesser Himalaya Recorded In The Nw Himalaya Foreland Basin, Elise Marie Exnicios
LSU Master's Theses
Testing models that link climate and solid Earth tectonics requires independent erosional, structural and climatic histories. Two well preserved stratigraphic sections of the Himalayan foreland basin are exposed in NW India. The Jawalamukhi (13–5 Ma) and Joginder Nagar sections (21–13 Ma) are dated by magnetostratigraphy and span a period of significant climate change and tectonic evolution. We use detrital zircon U-Pb dating and apatite fission track analyses to reconstruct changes in the patterns of erosion and exhumation in this area from the Early Miocene to Pliocene. The provenance of the foreland sediments shows that since at least ~21 Ma the …

#Blackgirlmathmagic: A Mixed Methods Study Examining African American Girls In Standardized Mathematicstesting, Rakeema Thomas Toussaint
#Blackgirlmathmagic: A Mixed Methods Study Examining African American Girls In Standardized Mathematicstesting, Rakeema Thomas Toussaint
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Black women have been making successful strides in mathematics for decades; however, they continue to be underrepresented in mathematics and other STEM fields. According to Young et al. (2017), Black girls and women perform lower in mathematics than all other racial gender groups except for Black males. Considering the stakes for Black girls and women in mathematics, this study sought to address this group's challenges early in their secondary education experiences, focusing on standardized testing.
The purpose of this explanatory-sequential mixed-methods study was to determine how different mathematics item types impacted the performance of African American girls, especially multiple-select multiple-choice …
Lyapunov Function-Based Stabilizing Control Scheme For Wireless Power Transfer Systems With Lcc Compensation Network, Abu Shahir Md Khalid Hasan
Lyapunov Function-Based Stabilizing Control Scheme For Wireless Power Transfer Systems With Lcc Compensation Network, Abu Shahir Md Khalid Hasan
LSU Master's Theses
A stabilizing control scheme based on a Lyapunov function is proposed for wireless power transfer (or WPT) systems. A state-space model of the WPT system is developed and the Lyapunov function is formulated based on an energy equation of the system involving state variables. The internal resistance of a battery varies during charge and discharge. Therefore, if a WPT system is used to charge a battery, its output load will vary. Furthermore, the coupling coefficient between the transmitter (primary) and receiver (secondary) coils decreases when they are misaligned. Comparative case studies are conducted to verify the efficacy of the proposed …

Seasonal Variation In The Feeding Ecology Of Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus Albacares) From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Mitchell Shay Lovell
LSU Master's Theses
Highly migratory fishes (e.g., tunas, billfishes, and sharks) play a significant role in the structure and function of open-ocean ecosystems and a better understanding of the food web dynamics that support their populations is essential to improve management and conservation. Here, I use complementary approaches (stomach contents, DNA barcoding, & stable isotopes) to examine seasonal variability in the feeding ecology of sub-adult (70 – 100 cm; n = 371) and adult (100 – 160 cm; n = 206) yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) from the northern Gulf of Mexico over a one-year period (April 2019 – March 2020). Stomach …

LSU Master's Theses
This study examines young African American adults’ usage of social media and other digital spaces as tools to build community given the rise in protest participation in North American (U. S.) society while at the height of a global health pandemic. Since early adulthood is a time where African Americans are most active online, this study will examine how and why those African Americans are turning to digital spaces to find social connections. Racism and racial injustice are two of the most pressing issues in the African American community, and it is clear that it can be an emotionally laborious …
Initial Investigations Into Tools For Phytoremediation Of Lead From Urban And Suburban Landscapes, Michael Taylor Bryant
Initial Investigations Into Tools For Phytoremediation Of Lead From Urban And Suburban Landscapes, Michael Taylor Bryant
LSU Master's Theses
Lead is a pervasive and ongoing problem in the landscape, especially in urban and suburban areas where historic use of tetraethyl lead gasoline and leaded paint has increased background amounts to dangerous levels. One method to solve this problem is the use of hyperaccumulator plant species, capable of concentrating over 1000 ppm Pb into their tissues. This is a slow process, even with hyperaccumulators, so the use of amendments to improve Pb solubility has gained popularity, though with mixed results. This study examined Trachelospermum asiaticum, Ardisia japonica, and Ophiopogon japonicus, three common landscape groundcovers used in Louisiana, …

Telling A New Story Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Narrative Versus Argument Communication Effects On Ocd Stigma And Recognition, Ashlyn Blaire Soileau
LSU Master's Theses
This study utilizes narrative persuasion theory to investigate the effect of narrative and argument appeals when communicating about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) to the public. This study tested stigma and recognition of OCD with a 2x2 factorial between-subject design using advertisement types and gender as the independent variables. Findings showed that communication type and gender do not affect OCD recognition. However, a univariate ANCOVA analysis, when controlling for empathy and OCD experience. The results revealed that gender and ad type did affect OCD stigma. Also, women showed lower stigma scores for social restrictiveness when seeing the narrative appeal when contrasted with …
Enhanced Oil Recovery In Tight Rocks Using The “Slot-Drill” Completion, Hassan Amer
Enhanced Oil Recovery In Tight Rocks Using The “Slot-Drill” Completion, Hassan Amer
LSU Master's Theses
Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is essential in shale/tight formations because primary recovery typically produces less than 10% of the original hydrocarbon in-place (OHIP). This work presents a novel “slot-drill” EOR technology, which involves injecting gas through a horizontal fracture that is cut into the formation near the top of the reservoir (using a tensioned abrasive cutting cable mounted to the drillstring) and producing oil from a second slot-drilled horizontal fracture near the bottom of the reservoir.
The dusty-gas diffusion model was implemented in a compositional simulator to account for the diffusion mechanism expected during the injection of gases in this …

Flat Topological Bands And Eigenstate Criticality In A Quasiperiodic Insulator, Yixing Fu, Justin H. Wilson, J. H. Pixley
Faculty Publications
The effects of downfolding a Brillouin zone can open gaps and quench the kinetic energy by flattening bands. Quasiperiodic systems are extreme examples of this process, which leads to new phases and critical eigenstates. We analytically and numerically investigate these effects in a two-dimensional topological insulator with a quasiperiodic potential and discover a complex phase diagram. We study the nature of the resulting eigenstate quantum phase transitions; a quasiperiodic potential can make a trivial insulator topological and induce topological insulator-to-metal phase transitions through a unique universality class distinct from random systems. This wealth of critical behavior occurs concomitantly with the …

To explore correlated electrons in the presence of local and nonlocal disorder, the Blackman-Esterling-Berk method for averaging over off-diagonal disorder is implemented into dynamical mean-field theory using tensor notation. The impurity model combining disorder and correlations is solved using the recently developed fork tensor-product state solver, which allows one to calculate the single particle spectral functions on the real-frequency axis. In the absence of off-diagonal hopping, we establish exact bounds of the spectral function of the noninteracting Bethe lattice with coordination number . In the presence of interaction, the Mott insulating paramagnetic phase of the one-band Hubbard model is computed …
Riverbed Dune Morphology Of The Lowermost Mississippi River – Implications Of Leeside Slope, Flow Resistance And Bedload Transport In A Large Alluvial River, Shuaihu Wu, Y. Jun Xu, Bo Wang, Heqin Cheng
Riverbed Dune Morphology Of The Lowermost Mississippi River – Implications Of Leeside Slope, Flow Resistance And Bedload Transport In A Large Alluvial River, Shuaihu Wu, Y. Jun Xu, Bo Wang, Heqin Cheng
Faculty Publications
Dunes are critical for understanding riverine sediment transport, deposition, flow resistance and channel flow processes. Although previous studies have examined the riverbed micromorphology of the Lower Mississippi River in the USA, our knowledge of detailed quantification of dune morphology in this and other large alluvial rivers is still limited. It is also not well understood how dunes in a straight channel reach and a meander bend differ in their characteristics, as well as how dune morphology may have been affected by human activities (i.e., river engineering). In this study, we utilized multi-beam bathymetric measurements over four 1.6–8.0 km long reaches …
The Influence Of Pine Management On Grassland-Nesting Songbirds Wintering In The Southeastern United States, Nancy M. Raginski
The Influence Of Pine Management On Grassland-Nesting Songbirds Wintering In The Southeastern United States, Nancy M. Raginski
LSU Master's Theses
In the southeastern U.S., pine forests cover ~28 million ha and are most often used for commercial timber and hunting. Management practices used to reach desired vegetative conditions in these forests may simultaneously influence distributions of overwintering songbirds, including several grassland-nesting songbirds. From December to February of 2018 and 2019 and December of 2020, I surveyed longleaf (Pinus palustris) and loblolly pine (P. taeda) stands burned 0–7 years ago to examine the influence of pine management on grassland-nesting birds overwintering in central Louisiana. I used single-season occupancy and N-mixture models to examine occupancy and abundance of …
An Analysis Of Effort, Success, And Attitudes Of Louisiana Hunters By Email And Mixed-Mode Surveys, Michael Sullivan
An Analysis Of Effort, Success, And Attitudes Of Louisiana Hunters By Email And Mixed-Mode Surveys, Michael Sullivan
LSU Master's Theses
ABSTRACT
Louisiana surveys waterfowl hunters every 5 years to assess harvest, harvest practices, demographics, and specific management objectives, as well as to research hypotheses derived from previous surveys of waterfowl hunters. In the 2020 survey, research hypotheses addressed hunter perceptions of changing waterfowl migration patterns, satisfaction, and relationships between perceptions and avidity with survey distribution waves and sample coverage. I surveyed a stratified census of 68,578 Louisiana waterfowl hunters by email following the 2019–2020 season, and asked 31 questions about waterfowl-hunting effort, success, satisfaction, regulatory alternatives, and demographics. I used generalized linear models to test hypotheses about hunters’ perception of …
Late Embryogenesis Abundant Proteins And Mitochondrial Membranes From An Animal Extremophile: Insights Into Severe Water Stress, John Marcus Anderson
Late Embryogenesis Abundant Proteins And Mitochondrial Membranes From An Animal Extremophile: Insights Into Severe Water Stress, John Marcus Anderson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on two major topics germane to mechanisms by which animals tolerate extreme water stress. First, the impact of transgenic expression of late embryogenesis abundant proteins (LEA) on water stress tolerance of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster was investigated. The overall aim was to extend current understanding of the protective properties of LEA proteins documented with isolated cells to a desiccation-sensitive organism during exposure to drying and hyperosmotic stress. Four lines of D. melanogaster were created that expressed transgenes encoding selected LEA proteins originally identified in embryos of the extremophile Artemia franciscana. After 80% tissue water loss, …
Creation Of Hand Sensors And Orthotics To Capture And Replicate Human Movement And Forces, Edward Frank Austin Jr.
Creation Of Hand Sensors And Orthotics To Capture And Replicate Human Movement And Forces, Edward Frank Austin Jr.
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Paralysis is a debilitating condition affecting as many as 5.4 million in the United States. Upper extremity paralysis/paresis is the most debilitating form of paralysis due to the robust kinematic patterns in our hands and wrist. These forces and movements available at our hand allow us to manipulate objects as small as a sewing needle yet still lift multiple grocery bags at one time on a daily basis. Inability to use the upper extremities usually necessitates 24-hour assistance. Therefore, it is imperative to build devices that are biomimetic to assist those with upper extremity paralysis. To accomplish this feat, this …
Impact Of Personality Traits And Team Criteria On Construction Team Performance, Arlys Silva Payne
Impact Of Personality Traits And Team Criteria On Construction Team Performance, Arlys Silva Payne
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation investigated how personality traits and team criteria influence team performance in real construction projects. Though personality influence on team performance has been significantly investigated in other business sectors, the literature revealed that the construction industry lacks investigations regarding personality influencing team performance. The existing literature revealed that the Big Five Factors (BFF) was the most popular assessment tool for personality. Thus, this dissertation adopted the 50-Item Personality questionnaire developed by Goldberg, which consited of extraversion, aggreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. The literature also revealed several common team criteria to evaluate team performance: team member satisfaction, shared …
