Confederately Wrong: The Names Of Hermitage Neighborhood It Should Be Changed, Christopher Toombs
Confederately Wrong: The Names Of Hermitage Neighborhood It Should Be Changed, Christopher Toombs
LSU Master's Theses
The Civil War was one of the most defining acts of war in American History. The Union and the Confederacy battled over the future of African born slaves. The Confederacy wanted to see the African born slaves in chains forever. However, the Union possessed the desire to allow the African slave a proper place in their society. LSU played a major part in the civil war on behalf of the confederacy. LSU’s staff, faculty, and students fought in the war for Baton Rouge and lost to the Union. Hence, the spirit of confederacy was embedded in Baton Rouge culture regardless …

Unmarked Human Burial Site Policy In Louisiana: Pre-Columbian Context And Community Perspectives, Sadie M. Schoeffler
Unmarked Human Burial Site Policy In Louisiana: Pre-Columbian Context And Community Perspectives, Sadie M. Schoeffler
LSU Master's Theses
Since the passing of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 (NAGPRA), state governments have implemented similar policies that allow for Native American tribes without federal recognition to petition for the repatriation of human remains and objects significant to their culture (Seidemann, 2010). Per La. R.S. 8:671-681, which is the Louisiana Unmarked Human Burial Sites Preservation Act of 1992 (UBA), the Division of Archaeology in the Louisiana State Office of Cultural Development is responsible for overseeing the protection and preservation of unmarked burials. These burials are often of pre-Columbian or historic cultural and temporal context, which warrants …
Emerging Trends: Scenic Design Beyond The Stage, Kellie N. Murphy
Emerging Trends: Scenic Design Beyond The Stage, Kellie N. Murphy
LSU Master's Theses
The role of a scenic designer is so exciting but opportunities to design can fluctuate a bit. While the work is rewarding, the career itself can be much like a gig at times. Then when you factor in a major event such as a global pandemic, where does this leave a scenic designer in terms of employment and livelihood? Are there other possibilities for work with a Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design? How do we continue to tell stories while providing for ourselves? Have artists considered how these skills are transferrable to other allied fields?
As a scenic …
Does Your Opponent's Gender Make A Difference? A Content Analysis Of The Use Of Gender Stereotyped Issues In Female Candidates’ Campaigns In A Mixed-Gender Versus An All-Women Races., Caley R. Hewitt
LSU Master's Theses
All-women races are steadily growing in politics as more women run with every election. While research shows how women campaign and face stereotypes when facing a male opponent or a female opponent, it does not assess how candidates may change their strategies when facing a male opponent or a female opponent. I ask if female candidates’ campaign differently on stereotypic issues between a mixed-gender election to an all-female election, specifically looking at the use of Twitter. These results showed that Democratic female candidates used more feminine-based issues facing a female opponent versus a male opponent. These results also show that …

The Adoption Of Conservation Practices And Program Participation Among Socially Disadvantaged Agricultural Producers: A Meta-Analysis, Myles A. Brown
The Adoption Of Conservation Practices And Program Participation Among Socially Disadvantaged Agricultural Producers: A Meta-Analysis, Myles A. Brown
LSU Master's Theses
As climate change has become undeniable in recent years, it has become increasingly important for the agriculture industry to address conservation. Within the agriculture industry, small farmers are usually the ones who take on this burden on a daily basis. However, some socially disadvantaged agricultural producers face unique challenges compared to the average farmer, which may impede their ability to adopt the necessary conservation practices or participate in conservation programs. This review sought to provide a definitive economic analysis on the possible effect of race on conservation adoption and program participation, as there is not much research on this topic. …
Bat Habitat Use And Activity In Forests Of Central Louisiana, Jane M. Kunberger
Bat Habitat Use And Activity In Forests Of Central Louisiana, Jane M. Kunberger
LSU Master's Theses
In the southeastern U.S., where forests are the primary land cover type and trees are often harvested for production purposes, understanding how forestry practices influence bat distributions is critical for bat conservation and management. It is also important for researchers to quantify and report variation in the performance of automated recordings units (ARUs) used to survey for bats because several key features of ARUs (e.g., microphone sensitivity, triggering thresholds) can influence an ARUs ability to detect bat calls. My goals were (1) to examine the influence of forest management practices on seasonal bat species occurrence and activity in central Louisiana, …

Examining Factors Related To Employees' Perceived Value Congruence In A Newcomer Training Program, William Joseph Mattera Jr
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The first 90 days of employment have received more and more attention concerning how an individual employee (“individual”) can succeed within the work environment. Watkins (2013) centers the responsibility on the individual to engage in understanding, embracing, and shifting toward buying into an organizational culture. However, what role does an organization play in successfully transitioning an individual into their culture? The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a new employee training program on perceptions of role clarity, organizational culture, organizational goals and values, and perceived value congruence.
A quantitative approach was utilized to analyze responses …

Genetic Characterization Of Resistance To Bacterial Panicle Blight And Sheath Blight In Rice Using Qtl Linkage Analysis And Qtl-Seq, John Christian E. Ontoy
LSU Master's Theses
Bacterial panicle blight (BPB) and sheath blight (SB) are major diseases of rice causing significant yield reduction in conducive conditions. Few cultivars have shown reliable resistance to these diseases. In this study, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from the U.S. cultivars Jupiter (moderately resistant) and Trenasse (susceptible) was investigated to identify genomic regions associated with BPB and SB resistance. Phenotypes in BPB and SB, as well as days to heading (DH), of the RIL population were evaluated in the field. DH was found to be correlated to BPB and SB diseases. BPB was also positively correlated to SB. …

The Asian clam Corbicula fluminea (Family: Cyneridae) has aggressively invaded freshwater habitats worldwide, resulting in dramatic ecological changes and declines of native bivalves such as freshwater mussels (Family: Unionidae), one of the most imperiled faunal groups. Despite increases in our knowledge of invasive C. fluminea biology, little is known of how intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including co-occurring native species, influence its microbiome. We investigated the gut bacterial microbiome across genetically differentiated populations of C. fluminea in the Tennessee and Mobile River Basins in the Southeastern United States and compared them to those of six co-occurring species of native freshwater mussels. …

Behind The Timeline: The Gendered Dynamics Among Civilian Volunteer Search And Rescue Organizations, Kyle Breen
Behind The Timeline: The Gendered Dynamics Among Civilian Volunteer Search And Rescue Organizations, Kyle Breen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the aftermath of disaster, it is often neighbors and other civilians nearby who respond first. Civilian disaster response, then, is not new. However, a new phenomenon emerged following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and again after the 2016 Louisiana Floods and Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Civilians convoyed to New Orleans with their boats to rescue others after Katrina, and again in 2016 and 2017. The difference in these more recent events has been the official formation of these volunteers into organizations that conduct search and rescue (SAR) as well as other relief activities. These civilian volunteer SAR organizations have gained …
Machine Learning Assisted Discovery Of Shape Memory Polymers And Their Thermomechanical Modeling, Cheng Yan
Machine Learning Assisted Discovery Of Shape Memory Polymers And Their Thermomechanical Modeling, Cheng Yan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As a new class of smart materials, shape memory polymer (SMP) is gaining great attention in both academia and industry. One challenge is that the chemical space is huge, while the human intelligence is limited, so that discovery of new SMPs becomes more and more difficult. In this dissertation, by adopting a series of machine learning (ML) methods, two frameworks are established for discovering new thermoset shape memory polymers (TSMPs). Specifically, one of them is performed by a combination of four methods, i.e., the most recently proposed linear notation BigSMILES, supplementing existing dataset by reasonable approximation, a mixed dimension (1D …

Investigation Of Groundwater Depletion And Leveel Underseepage With Unstructured-Grid Modeling Approach, Ye-Hong Chen
Investigation Of Groundwater Depletion And Leveel Underseepage With Unstructured-Grid Modeling Approach, Ye-Hong Chen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Unstructured grid is a tessellation of geometric shapes in irregular patterns that provides flexibility in grid design for groundwater modeling. However, groundwater modeling is mostly developed with uniform grid tessellation and layer, which could simplify model structure or cause expensive computational costs in high-resolution simulations. Unstructured grid incorporates non-uniform horizontal and non-uniform vertical discretizations providing the capability to replicate complex hydrostratigraphy, capture geologic features that are crucial for groundwater flow simulation, and reduce computational costs while maintaining a high resolution for areas of interest. This study contains three parts to investigate unstructured-grid approach on constructing high-fidelity groundwater models, comparisons with …
Unavoidable Structures In Large And Infinite Graphs, Sarah Allred
Unavoidable Structures In Large And Infinite Graphs, Sarah Allred
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work, we present results on the unavoidable structures in large connected and large 2-connected graphs. For the relation of induced subgraphs, Ramsey proved that for every positive integer r, every sufficiently large graph contains as an induced subgraph either Kr or Kr. It is well known that, for every positive integer r, every sufficiently large connected graph contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to one of Kr, K1,r, and Pr. We prove an analogous result for 2-connected graphs. Similarly, for infinite graphs, every infinite connected graph contains an induced subgraph …
New Aspects Of Optical Coherence And Their Potential For Quantum Technologies, Nathaniel Robert Miller
New Aspects Of Optical Coherence And Their Potential For Quantum Technologies, Nathaniel Robert Miller
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Currently, optical technology impacts most of our lives, from light used in scientific measurement to the fiber optic cables that makeup the backbone of the internet. However, as our current optical infrastructure grows, we discover that these technologies are not limitless. Astronomers find themselves unable resolve stars that are too close to one another. Meanwhile, the internet is always under threat as our computer technology improves and more complex ways to break encryption emerge, threatening our personal information and infrastructure. However, our current optical technology functions on classical principles, and can be easily improved by incorporating our knowledge of quantum …
Competitive Sorption And Transport Of Heavy Metals In Soil And Mn Oxide-Coated Sand, Joshua Tyler Padilla
Competitive Sorption And Transport Of Heavy Metals In Soil And Mn Oxide-Coated Sand, Joshua Tyler Padilla
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the competitive sorption of Ni, Pb, and Zn as well as synergistic interactions between Ni and phosphate (P) in soils and Mn oxide-coated sand. During stirred-flow experiments, the sorption of heavy metal cations by Olivier soil was mutually reduced when applied simultaneously. When applied consecutively, the cation of higher affinity was able to displace the cation of lower affinity from the soil surface, however, no evidence for the reverse case was observed. A novel general exchange kinetics model was able to correctly describe such displacement. Competition between Ni and Zn mutually increased mobility in Olivier and Windsor …
A Numerical Investigation Of Flood And Sediment Dynamics Over The Coastal Watersheds During Hurricane Events, Dongxiao Yin
A Numerical Investigation Of Flood And Sediment Dynamics Over The Coastal Watersheds During Hurricane Events, Dongxiao Yin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Landfalling tropical cyclones can cause catastrophic floods and sediment disturbance over the coastal watersheds. This study aims to unravel the contribution of different processes to hurricane-induced flooding, to assess the uncertainties in flood modelling and forecasting, and to advance the techniques in sediment simulation over coastal watersheds during hurricanes.
First, I examined the hydrometeorology and hydrology of Hurricane Florence (2018) induced inland flooding. My results suggest that the slow motion in combination with the “L-shaped” path was the most distinctive feature of the hurricane that incurred catastrophic and widespread rainfall and flooding over the Cape Fear River Basin (CFRB).

Strategic Use Of Topic-Congruent Managerial Responses In Online Review Systems, Sun Tae Kim
Strategic Use Of Topic-Congruent Managerial Responses In Online Review Systems, Sun Tae Kim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Strategic use of systems beyond firm control (SBFC) is a critical challenge for firms that are voluntarily or involuntarily represented in these systems. Firms are forced to use SBFCs that are information systems neither designed nor controlled by them to stay competitive in the market. Online review systems are a class of SBFC in which companies can participate while playing by the systems’ rules through managerial responses. Through a mixed-methods investigation that combines an archival study and two experimental studies, we extend the understanding of the benefits that the firms who intervene in these systems can receive. In the first …
Model-Guided Design Of Rna-Based Synthetic Circuits For The Dynamic Regulation Of Gene Expression, Jordan R. Ryan
Model-Guided Design Of Rna-Based Synthetic Circuits For The Dynamic Regulation Of Gene Expression, Jordan R. Ryan
LSU Master's Theses
A longstanding goal in synthetic biology has been to build synthetic gene circuits with the ability to harness nature’s capability of precise gene expression regulation. Advancements in RNA technology have established RNA-based regulators with distinct advantages over traditional protein-based regulators such as faster signal propagation, versatile programmability, and low cellular burden, which has created an interest in the field to construct innovative synthetic gene circuits using de novo RNA- based regulators. However, our understanding of the behavior and kinetics of RNA-RNA interactions for the construction of gene circuits is incomplete. This thesis proposes a model-guided design framework that integrates mechanistic …
Effects Of Meteorologic Events On Wave Climate And Current Regime In A Shallow, Microtidal Bay, Jay S. Merrill
Effects Of Meteorologic Events On Wave Climate And Current Regime In A Shallow, Microtidal Bay, Jay S. Merrill
LSU Master's Theses
Along coastal Louisiana and within the shallow microtidal Barataria Bay estuary, meteorological events can play a primary role in influencing wave climate and circulation patterns. Understanding the effects of hurricanes and smaller tropical storms on hydrodynamic processes is important for constraining and predicting hydrodynamic variation in Barataria Bay, which, largely due to impacts from wave energy, is currently experiencing rapid wetland loss and is a major focus of coastal restoration efforts. Two bottom-mounted upward-facing Acoustic Current Doppler Profilers and wave, temperature, and depth recorders were installed in the lower portions of Barataria Bay to measure the wave climate and three-dimensional …

Image And Video Segmentation Of Appearance-Volatile Objects, Yongqing Liang
LSU Master's Theses
Segmentation is a process of partitioning a digital image or frame into multiple regions or objects. The goal of segmentation is to identify and locate the objects of interest with their boundaries. Recent segmentation approaches often follow such a pipeline: they first train the model on a collected dataset and then evaluate the trained model on a given image or video. They assume that the appearance of object is consistent in training and testing sets. However, the appearance of object may change in different photography conditions. How to effectively segment the objects with volatile appearance remains under-explored. In this work, …
