Literacy's Levels: An Analysis Of Neoliberal Literacy Sponsorship In The U.S., Misty Dawn Fuller May 2022

Literacy's Levels: An Analysis Of Neoliberal Literacy Sponsorship In The U.S., Misty Dawn Fuller

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While much scholarship has considered Deborah Brandt’s concept of sponsors of literacy, there remains a need to consider relationships between literacy sponsors and larger implications of literacy sponsorship at national and institutional levels. Utilizing academic theories, U.S. federal government budgets and financed reports, and discoursal analysis, this dissertation investigates literacy sponsorship at the federal, postsecondary institutional, postsecondary institutional writing programmatic, and individual levels to tease out how, and in what ways, through “enabling” and “supporting” literacy these sponsors also” regulate, suppress, and withhold literacy” (Brandt 166). Rhetorical analysis determines that, at the U.S. federal level, literacy is promoted as a …

Unravelling The Spatiotemporal Variation Of Pco2 In Low Order Streams: Linkages To Land Use And Stream Order, Shijie Gu, Y. Jun Xu, Siyue Li May 2022

Unravelling The Spatiotemporal Variation Of Pco2 In Low Order Streams: Linkages To Land Use And Stream Order, Shijie Gu, Y. Jun Xu, Siyue Li

Faculty Publications

Headwater streams make the majority of cumulative stream length in a river basin, carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from headwater (low order) streams is thus an essential component. Anthropogenic activities in headwater areas such as land use change and land use practices can strongly modify terrestrial carbon and nutrient input, which could affect the level of partial pressure of dissolved carbon dioxide (pCO2) and CO2 degassing from streams. However, there are large uncertainties in estimates due to the lack of data in subtropical rivers of rapidly developing rural regions. The spatiotemporal variation and driving factors of the pCO2 and CO2 degassing …

Paraventricular Vitamin D Receptors Are Required For Glucose Tolerance In Males But Not Females, Jessie Beck, Silvania Da Silva Teixeira, Keisha Harrison, Gabrielle Phillips, Yanlin He, Stephanie Sisley May 2022

Paraventricular Vitamin D Receptors Are Required For Glucose Tolerance In Males But Not Females, Jessie Beck, Silvania Da Silva Teixeira, Keisha Harrison, Gabrielle Phillips, Yanlin He, Stephanie Sisley

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

When delivered directly into the brain, vitamin D, can improve glucose levels in male mice. Additionally, the loss of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in male mice’s paraventricular hypothalamus (PVH) results in impaired glucose tolerance. Data in humans shows that low vitamin D levels are detrimental to glucose homeostasis, an effect that may be more prominent in men. However, it is unknown if vitamin D action in the brain is required for normal glucose regulation in female mice. This study shows that in both viral and genetic models, male mice with obesity and PVH VDR loss have impaired glucose tolerance …

Places To Live: A Multidisciplinary Approach To Modern Maya Houses In Yucatan, Mexico, Virginia J. Ochoa-Winemiller May 2022

Places To Live: A Multidisciplinary Approach To Modern Maya Houses In Yucatan, Mexico, Virginia J. Ochoa-Winemiller

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In 1938, Robert C. Wauchope’s Modern Maya Houses provided the first detailed description of traditional rural housing for the Maya area. Until today, no research has attempted to test Wauchope’s notion of cultural continuity in Maya domestic architecture from the prehistoric past up to the time of his pioneering study. By examining data from three municipios located in the state of Yucatan, Mexico, I compared contemporary information collected during visits to residential areas with that published by Wauchope in 1938. An integrated approach to data gathering and analysis, that is, a combination of interviews, questionnaires, archaeological survey, and geographic information …

Ligers Interferometric Survey Of M Dwarf Diameters, Tyler Gregory Ellis May 2022

Ligers Interferometric Survey Of M Dwarf Diameters, Tyler Gregory Ellis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I present the largest single collection of M dwarf stellar radii in over a decade and contextualize these measurements with the systematic model discrepancies. The measurements of stellar angular diameters are also important in the quantification of the properties of exoplanets. In order to estimate the property of the exoplanet, it is first necessary to quantify the properties of the planet's host star. Using the survey results complemented with previous direct observations of the angular diameters of low mass stars, I develop updated updated surface brightness relationships. These relationships allow predictions of angular diameters using easy to …

Evaluating The Effect Of Coated Urea And Urea-Ammonium-Nitrate Solution On Cane Tonnage, Sugar Yield, And Leaf-Soil Nitrogen Content Under Louisiana Sugarcane Production System, Hector J. Mendoza Lagos

LSU Master's Theses

Nitrogen (N) is a crucial nutrient for proper plant growth and development. N deficiency results in poor tillering and thin, short internode stem production for sugarcane production, thus resulting in low cane tonnage. Therefore, proper N fertilizer management is essential for a sustainable sugarcane production system. This research was conducted at the LSU AgCenter Sugar Research Station in St. Gabriel, LA, from 2019 to 2020 at three Sites (Site 1, 2, and 3). The treatments consisted of different N rates (0, 45, 90, and 135 kg N ha-1) and sources (urea-ammonium-nitrate solution [UAN]-32%, 30-day [Coated Urea 1], 45-day …

Cardiovascular And Range Of Motion Effects After Exercise Training Interventions, Nolynn E. Sutherland May 2022

Cardiovascular And Range Of Motion Effects After Exercise Training Interventions, Nolynn E. Sutherland

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The effects of stretching and yoga on the cardiovascular and muscular systems are still being discovered and can be assessed non-invasively. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the non-invasive markers of stretching and yoga on the metabolic, cardiovascular, and muscular systems. A series of three studies were conducted to gain insight into how stretching and yoga influence the body and if there are any potential differences between them.

The first study aimed to determine if stretching would influence fiber type and motor unit recruitment. An acute bout of stretch exercise was performed immediately before a biking exercise session …

A Data-Based Framework For Monitoring And Controlling Particulate Systems, Vidhyadhar Manee May 2022

A Data-Based Framework For Monitoring And Controlling Particulate Systems, Vidhyadhar Manee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the limitations of conventional monitoring tools in crystallization is the inability to deal with high solids concentration. Image-based monitoring, in which RGB images of the solution are captured and analyzed by an object detection software, has been a promising alternative. The software used in these tools primarily depends on hand-coded heuristics to distinguish between the signal and the noise. With the recent success of supervised deep learning, a newer paradigm has emerged in which the heuristics can be learnt from labeled images. This approach is founded on the idea that it is easier to develop labels for data …

Estuarine and coastal geomorphology, biogeochemistry, water quality, and coastal food webs in river-dominated shelves of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) are modulated by transport processes associated with river inputs, winds, waves, tides, and deep-ocean/continental shelf interactions. For instance, transport processes control the fate of river-borne sediments, which in turn affect coastal land loss. Similarly, transport of freshwater, nutrients, and carbon control the dynamics of eutrophication, hypoxia, harmful algal blooms, and coastal acidification. Further, freshwater inflow transports pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, and oil into receiving estuaries and coastal systems. Lastly, transport processes along the continuum from the rivers and estuaries to …

Comparison Of Flows Through A Tidal Inlet In Late Spring And After The Passage Of An Atmospheric Cold Front In Winter Using Acoustic Doppler Profilers And Vessel-Based Observations, Mingming Li, Chunyan Li May 2022

Comparison Of Flows Through A Tidal Inlet In Late Spring And After The Passage Of An Atmospheric Cold Front In Winter Using Acoustic Doppler Profilers And Vessel-Based Observations, Mingming Li, Chunyan Li

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the application of acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) for the quantification of transport of water and the underlining physical mechanism. The transport of water through estuaries and tidal inlets is affected by tide, river flow, and wind. It is often assumed that wind effects in such systems are negligible unless under severe weather conditions. This study compares the ADCP-measured flows across a tidal inlet under weak wind conditions in late spring and those after the passage of an atmospheric cold front in winter. The Barataria Pass is a major inlet connecting Barataria Bay and northern Gulf of …

Improved Method For Testing Integrity Loss Of Wells With Sustained Casing Pressure, Mohammad Kazemi, Andrew K. Wojtanowicz May 2022

Improved Method For Testing Integrity Loss Of Wells With Sustained Casing Pressure, Mohammad Kazemi, Andrew K. Wojtanowicz

Faculty Publications

The pressure bleed-down/build-up (B/B) testing is enforced by the Bureau of Safty and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) regulations in the US for gas-leaking wells with recurrent casing head annular pressure dubbed “Sustained Casing Pressure” (SCP). The bleed down test involves bleeding the pressure with a needle valve. Once the pressure reached to zero or stabilized, the valve is closedand a 24-h pressure monitoring starts. Analysis of the tests mandated by regulations involves merely a qualitative assessment of the low or high level of environmental risk measured by leak size. A quantitative analysis—based on mathematical models—has been already proposed and used for …

There are always significant challenges in improving the safety culture by changing and adding additional safety protocols. The unknown impacts of COVID-19 and how it quickly spreads led the industry to institute essential safety protocols. This paper addresses two problem statements. The first problem statement is: what are the additional safety protocols for process safety, construction & maintenance, and personal protective equipment requirements? The second problem statement is: what are the cost and schedule impacts of industrial construction projects resulting from implementing safety protocols and process safety during construction with the added PPE? While complying with added safety protocols, the …

A recent Perspective article described the "carbohydrate-insulin model (CIM)"of obesity, asserting that it "better reflects knowledge on the biology of weight control"as compared with what was described as the "dominant energy balance model (EBM),"which fails to consider "biological mechanisms that promote weight gain."Unfortunately, the Perspective conflated and confused the principle of energy balance, a law of physics that is agnostic as to obesity mechanisms, with the EBM as a theoretical model of obesity that is firmly based on biology. In doing so, the authors presented a false choice between the CIM and a caricature of the EBM that does not …

On Uniqueness And Stability For The Boltzmann-Enskog Equation, Martin Friesen, Barbara Ruediger, Padmanabhan Subdar May 2022

On Uniqueness And Stability For The Boltzmann-Enskog Equation, Martin Friesen, Barbara Ruediger, Padmanabhan Subdar

Faculty Publications

The time-evolution of a moderately dense gas in a vacuum is described in classical mechanics by a particle density function obtained from the Boltzmann-Enskog equation. Based on a McKean-Vlasov equation with jumps, the associated stochastic process was recently constructed by modified Picard iterations with the mean-field interactions, and more generally, by a system of interacting particles. By the introduction of a shifted distance that exactly compensates for the free transport term that accrues in the spatially inhomogeneous setting, we prove in this work an inequality on the Wasserstein distance for any two measure-valued solutions to the Boltzmann-Enskog equation. As a …

Patterns Of Choice Adaptation In Dynamic Risky Environments, E Konstantinidis, J L. Harman, C Gonzalez May 2022

Patterns Of Choice Adaptation In Dynamic Risky Environments, E Konstantinidis, J L. Harman, C Gonzalez

Faculty Publications

An important aspect of making good decisions is the ability to adapt to changes in the values of available choice options, and research suggests that we are poor at changing behavior and adapting our choices successfully. The current paper contributes to clarifying the role of memory on learning and successful adaptation to changing decision environments. We test two aspects of changing decision environments: the direction of change and the type of feedback. The direction of change refers to how options become more or less rewarding compared to other options, over time. Feedback refers to whether full or partial information about …

Oncostatin M Induces Lipolysis And Suppresses Insulin Response In 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Jennifer L. Bailey, Hardy Hang, Anik Boudreau, Carrie M. Elks

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

Oncostatin M (OSM) is an immune cell-derived cytokine that is upregulated in adipose tissue in obesity. Upon binding its receptor (OSMR), OSM induces the phosphorylation of the p66 subunit of Src homology 2 domain-containing transforming protein 1 (SHC1), called p66Shc, and activates the extracellular signal-related kinase (ERK) pathway. Mice with adipocyte-specific OSMR deletion (OsmrFKO) are insulin resistant and exhibit adipose tissue inflammation, suggesting that intact adipocyte OSM–OSMR signaling is necessary for maintaining adipose tissue health. How OSM affects specific adipocyte functions is still unclear. Here, we examined the effects of OSM on adipocyte lipolysis. We treated 3T3-L1 adipocytes with OSM, …

Midbrain dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) neurons regulate motivated behaviors, including feeding, but less is known about how these circuits may interact. In this study, we found that DA neurons in the mouse ventral tegmental area bidirectionally regulate the activity of 5-HT neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), with weaker stimulation causing DRD2-dependent inhibition and overeating, while stronger stimulation causing DRD1-dependent activation and anorexia. Furthermore, in the activity-based anorexia (ABA) paradigm, which is a mouse model mimicking some clinical features of human anorexia nervosa (AN), we observed a DRD2 to DRD1 shift of DA neurotransmission on 5-HTDRN neurons, which …

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains a global public health threat. Hence, more effective and specific antivirals are urgently needed. Here, COVID-19 hyperimmune globulin (COVID-HIG), a passive immunotherapy, is prepared from the plasma of healthy donors vaccinated with BBIBP-CorV (Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine). COVID-HIG shows high-affinity binding to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike (S) protein, the receptor-binding domain (RBD), the N-terminal domain of the S protein, and the nucleocapsid protein; and blocks RBD binding to human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2). Pseudotyped and authentic virus-based assays show that COVID-HIG displays broad-spectrum neutralization effects on a wide variety of SARS-CoV-2 variants, …

Non-resolving pancreatic islet inflammation is widely viewed as a contributor to decreases in β-cell mass and function that occur in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Therefore, strategies aimed at reducing or eliminating pathological inflammation would be useful to protect islet β-cells. Herein, we described the use of 2′,4′-dihydroxy-4-methoxydihydrochalcone (DMC2), a bioactive molecule isolated from an ethanolic extract of Artemisia dracunculus L., as a novel anti-inflammatory agent. The ethanolic extract, termed PMI 5011, reduced IL-1β-mediated NF-κB activity. DMC2 retained this ability, indicating this compound as the likely source of anti-inflammatory activity within the overall PMI 5011 extract. We further …
