Dr. Alfred Mercier stands prominent as the most prolific writer of the French language that Louisiana has produced. His was the last generation of Creoles, educated in France, who presented a direct influence of French culture upon Louisiana. His life spanned the years when the Creole was supreme, when American economic and eventual cultural control of New Orleans became evident, the years of the war and reconstruction, and the years which saw the disappearance of French as the active language in the life of the city. The purpose of-this study was to discover (1) the amount of theatrical activity in Baton Rouge, Louisiana during the nineteenth century; (2) the nature of the activity; (3) the names of productions and of persons - connected with the production; and (4) the development of the theatre in Baton Rouge as compared with that of other Southern towns. The main source of Information was the newspapers of the period. The earliest available papers were for 1819 so that date was taken as the starting point of the study. The Preaching Of George Whitefield During The Great Awakening In America, Eugene Edmond White

For thirty-four George Whitefield followed the Biblical dictum: “Go ye into the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” Traveling by horseback, by schooner, and even by rowboat, he sought converts in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Holland, Bermuda, and colonial America. The out-of-doors was often his chapel; and a mound, tree stump, horse’s back, or hogshead, served as his pulpit. In his itinerating, Whitefield averaged about forty hours of preaching each week and eventually delivered about 18,000 sermons to some ten million auditors. An analysis of Whitefield’s oratory during his entire evangelical career from 1737 to 1770 would make …

Commitments To The Louisiana State Pententiary During The Fiscal Years 1939-1940 And 1945-1946, George Bedsole Jr

This study analyzes the commitments to the Louisiana State Penitentiary during the fiscal years 1939-1940 and 1945-1946. It directs particular attention at the possible effects of the recent war upon, first, the pattern of crime in the state; second, the characteristics of the persons admitted to the state penitentiary. Under the former category are considered the types of crimes for which sentenced, the place of crime, and the extent of recidivism. In connection with the latter category, information on race, sex, age, marital status, religion, and occupation is analyzed.
