Behavior Of The Red-Footed Booby (Sulasula) In British Honduras, Jared Verner

During three months of the breeding season in a colony of 3500 Red-footed Boobies (Sula sula) on 45½-acre Half Moon Caye, fifty miles east of Belize, British Honduras, that species’ little-known breeding activities were investigated. Feeding flights of boobies began leaving the caye before daylight and returned in the evening until after dark. Wind direction and velocity notably affected the mode of the birds’ departure but little affected their direction. Average flight-unit size was 2.41 birds. Contrary to published accounts, the boobies were able to take flight from the ground.

This research project is a descriptive study of a hybrid racial community in a rural, non-farm area of Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. The preparation of this research utilized chiefly primary material, although secondary material was used. The principal sources of data for this study were schedules, interviews, informal conversations, personal observations, attitude inventories, documents, and pertinent published materials.

The scope of the thesis is as follows: (1) the presentation of the historical background of the general area and the people; (2) the population characteristics of the community are analyzed and, when possible, compared to another significant population group; (3) a general …

During the preceding half century, sociologists have conducted an increasing number of studies of small informal groups; however, few social scientists have studied these phenomena among inmates in prison. Particularly is this true with regard to female inmates. This thesis seeks to present a sociological description of informal inmate groups, their leaders, and the isolates in a women's division of a state prison. It is hoped that the study will provide insight into possible hypotheses and methodological procedures for future research. French radio broadcasting began in 1934. Since that tine, twenty-one radio stations in Southwest Louisiana have broadcast in French.- In August, 1958, 18 of these stations were broadcasting in-French*- This study investigates the broadcasting activities of these 21 stations and reports the nature and extent of their French programming from the time of their origins through August, 1958. Personal interviews with station managers and program directors, schedules and logs at individual stations, and microfilms of local newspapers containing broadcasting schedules were chief sources of information. Personal correspondence with radio station personnel and civic organisations supplied important supplementary material. The study …
