Variation Of Average Moisture Content Of Standing Sweetgum Trees In Louisiana, Larry Gene Henderson

A study was conducted to determine if there is a significant variation in moisture content and specific gravity of sweetgum trees (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) within the state of Louisiana. Sweetgum was chosen because it can be found on a variety of sites and is an important hardwood pulp species. This information was sought because of its value to the business of buying wood by weight rather than by volume measure, and because moisture content and specific gravity are the main factors causing variation in the weight of wood. During Fredericksburg (Early Cretaceous) time the entire Callahan Divide area of west-central Texas was the site of clayey, lime-mud accumulation in a normal-marine, shallow-shelf environment. Lateral homogeneity of the quiet-water environment was soon interrupted locally by the deposition of bioclastic lime-sands in a linear, highly agitated shoal-zone coinciding with a portion of the axis of a regional, positive, Paleozoic structural feature known as the Concho Arch. Localized shoal conditions persisted throughout most of Fredericksburg time and resulted in the deposition of a thick sequence of grainstones and packstones collectively referred to in this paper as the Callahan Complex. The Efforts To Reopen The African Slave Trade In Louisiana, James Paisley Hendrix Jr

With the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the United States government quickly moved to prohibit the further importation of African slaves into the newly acquired territory. This closing of the foreign slave trade was extended to the national level by a Federal law which became effective January 1, 1808. Protests emanated from Louisiana almost immediately after the trade was closed in 1803, but initially they were infrequent and mild. A general Southern effort to reopen the foreign slave trade began to develop in the early 1850's, largely in the Southern commercial conventions. This movement reached its peak in 1859 when a …

A Biogeographic Analysis Of The Herpetofauna Of The San Luis Valley, Colorado, Donald Edgar Hahn

During the period January, 1960, to September, 1965, herpetological collections were made throughout the isolated San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado, Over 800 specimens representing 15 species were examined and compared taxonomically with populations outside the Valley, Brief notes are included on natural history and ecology of the species in the area. Data are also presented on geography, geology, climate, vegetation, and zoogeographic position of the Valley, Thamnophis sirtalis dorsalis is eliminated from the fauna of Colorado upon re-examination of the specimen upon which this record was based. Data on Phrynosoma douglassi from the Valley support Gehlbach's (1965) conclusion that …
