The purpose of this study was to investigate Florida County Extension Directors* and county Extension advisory committee members* perception of the roles and role performance of county Extension advisory committees. This purpose evolved from Extension personnel experiencing varying degrees of success in the committee approach to Extension program development. It was felt that this could be due to a lack of common understanding by Extension agents and committee members of the roles and functions of advisory committees. The major purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference in readiness test scores between students who participated in a structured kindergarten program and those who participated in an unstructured program. This investigation also sought to examine the achievement of students relative to certain variables, such as morning and afternoon session, race, sex, preschool attendance, French spoken in the home, place of residence, birth order, and father's years of education. One-Electron And Two-Electron Atoms In Strong Magnetic Fields And Implications For Magnetic White Dwarfs And Pulsars., Garabed Leon Surmelian

We present a variational calculation, using Slater-type trial wavefunctions of the energy spectrum and ionization energy of the hydrogen atom in strong magnetic fields ranging from 10^ Gauss (typical of magnetic white dwarf surfaces) to 10 12 Gauss (typical of pulsar surfaces). In addition, we have calculated bound-bound transition probabilities. Furthermore, a method is developed to generalize the energy level results to any one-electron atom. In particular, results for He 11 are presented. We also present an exact calculation of the quadratic Zeeman wavelength displacements of the Balmer lines from DA white dwarfs in view of which the estimate of …

The purpose of the study was to determine experimentally what effects, if any, two key within-receiver characteristics would have on the meanings communicated messages had for the respondents. The within-receiver characteristics were the emotional states of mind and communication skill levels of the test subjects. The study hypothesized that: 1. The meanings given communicated messages by subjects receiving dissimilar emotional inducements would vary significantly. 2. The meanings given communicated messages by subjects with different communication skill levels would vary significantly. 3. The computational procedure presented in this disser tation should enable the practicing engineer to design well fields for the storage of fresh water in horizontal saline aquifers in which there is no pre-existing ground-water movement. The recovery efficiency of the injection/storage/ retrieval process can now be reliably computed, thus making possible an economic analysis of the process in any speci fied area. An economic comparison of the storage of ap proximately one billion gallons in a saline aquifer that underlies the New Orleans area was made with the present most feasible alternate--steel tanks. The epidemiology of several viruses known to infect bell peppers was studied in two pepper producing areas of Louisiana. The St. James area has a history of severe losses due to virus diseases which fre quently infect 100% of the pepper plants. TI!.is is in sharp contrast to the Hanmond area in which virus-infected peppers are seldom found. Viruses were identified by mechanical transmission to indicator hosts and by serology. In the St. James area, tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) was found to spread primarily in April and infect up to 5% of the plants in a given field. Peppers …

The noniterative integral equation technique is used to solve the linear, ordinary, second-order coupled differential equations that result from a treatment of the electron-molecule scattering problem within the close coupling theory. In order to compensate for truncation of the close-coupling system wavefunction expansion, alternative coordinate reference frames (lab and body) are used to describe the incident electron trajectory. Numerous studies reported in the literature indicate that the amygdala is essential for normal pituitary-adrenal function in rodents. In light of discrepancies regarding the nature of this relationship this investigation was undertaken to reevaluate tile influence of the amydala over adrenocortical secretory mechanisms. To this end, plasma corticosterone concentrations were determined after ablation or electrical stimulation of the amygdaloid system. Interruption of the stria terminalis or ventral amygdalofugal pathway as well as large amygdaloid lesions had no effect on resting or stress components of the pituitary-adrenal axis. Utilization of appropriate chemical/physical/micro biological techniques for pretreatment of cellulosic sub strates was shown to significantly accelerate cellulose biodegradation processes under both laboratory and in situ marine conditions. Initially an overlay plating system was developed for the isolation of cellulolytic bacteria. The procedure involved a double-layer agar system, with the basal portion consisting of a mineral salt/yeast extract agar and the upper portion, an alkali-treated cellulose agar overlay. The system was shown to have limited appli cation in the enumeration of cellulolytic bacterial populations. An in situ rate of 3.8 mg solubilized/24 hr/gram substrate was determined for the decomposition of …

The purpose of this work is twofold: (1) to create a comprehensive and complete data processing system specifically designed to permit efficient access to specific information contained in traffic accident information files, and (2) to demonstrate an appli: :ion of the system using a model developed for the optimal allocation of personnel to reduce accidents by means of selective law enforcement. Methods were developed to obtain antigens from mycelium of species and races of Pyricularia. Antisera were developed against five test isolates off. oryzae and f· grisea. Conidia-agglutination tests and precipitin tests were developed for visualization of antigen antibody reactions using fungal antigens. Comparison of the irmruno diffusion and irrrmmoelectrophoresis reactions among species and races of Pyricularia indicated that all of the isolates tested were closely related, with several antigens in common, but also with specific antigens. Comparison of zymograms of protein bands from Pyricularia isolates separated by disc-gel electrophoresic; also showed similarities ..od differences in soluble proteins among tlw isolates. …
