The Risks Posed By Mosquito Ultra-Low Volume Applications To Procambarus Clarkii Production, Timothy Mcnamara

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mosquito abatement has received much scrutiny due to concerns about the impacts of control applications on non-target organisms. In Louisiana, a great deal of this concern has come from crawfish farmers claiming mosquito abatement applications have damaged crawfish production. To determine which mosquito abatement practices and products pose a risk to crawfish production, we conducted a series of studies examining mosquito abatement practices in the vicinity of crawfish production fields and the impacts of common mosquito abatement product exposure on crawfish health and production. We found that mosquito ULV applications are the most likely to result in exposure to crawfish …

Common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are predicted to collectively explain 40–50% of phenotypic variation in human height, but identifying the specific variants and associated regions requires huge sample sizes1. Here, using data from a genome-wide association study of 5.4 million individuals of diverse ancestries, we show that 12,111 independent SNPs that are significantly associated with height account for nearly all of the common SNP-based heritability. These SNPs are clustered within 7,209 non-overlapping genomic segments with a mean size of around 90 kb, covering about 21% of the genome. The density of independent associations varies across the genome and the regions of …

A Cluster Structure On The Coordinate Ring Of Partial Flag Varieties, Fayadh Kadhem Oct 2022

A Cluster Structure On The Coordinate Ring Of Partial Flag Varieties, Fayadh Kadhem

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The main goal of this dissertation is to show that the (multi-homogeneous) coordinate ring of a partial flag variety C[G/P_K^−] contains a cluster algebra for every semisimple complex algebraic group G. We use derivation properties and a canonical lifting map to prove that the cluster algebra structure A of the coordinate ring C[N_K] of a Schubert cell constructed by Goodearl and Yakimov can be lifted, in an explicit way, to a cluster structure \hat{A} living in the coordinate ring of the corresponding partial flag variety. Then we use a minimality condition to prove that the cluster algebra \hat{A} is equal …

Synthesis Of Carbon Nanohoops And Macrocycles Via Alkyne Metathesis, Xin Zhou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cycloparaphenyleneacetylene (CPPA) and cycloparaphenylene (CPP) are called carbon nanohoops; they are fully conjugated macrocycles with radially oriented aromatic groups. Though many syntheses of CPPA and CPP were reported, in the macrocyclization step, the yields were usually not satisfying, as the reactions were irreversible. Our group utilizes alkyne metathesis to address this problem. Chapter 1 provides backgrounds and an introduction to the carbon nanohoops and alkyne metathesis.

Chapter 2 details the synthesis of the [3]CPP4A and [3]CPP5A, with good macrocyclization yields via alkyne metathesis. This study showed the error-correction ability of alkyne metathesis, especially with nonsymmetric substrates. …

"A Sort Of Pain, Which Is New": Unresolved Grief In British Romantic Literature, Eta Farmacelia Nurulhady Oct 2022

"A Sort Of Pain, Which Is New": Unresolved Grief In British Romantic Literature, Eta Farmacelia Nurulhady

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the cultural phenomenon of mourning in relation to British Romantic Literature. In chapters on the work of William Wordsworth, Jane Austen, Felicia Hemans, and Charles Lamb, it argues that the Romantic period, as a time of increased mobility due to three revolutions, wars, and the expansion of empire, was a moment when unresolved grief became a common experience. Using the psychologist Pauline Boss’s concept of “ambiguous loss” as a lens for a new reading of British Romantic writing, and distinguishing this concept from the modern concept of “nostalgia,” this dissertation analyzes poetry, novels, and essays written by …

Controlling Electro-Magnetic Functionality Of Ruthenates By Heterostructure Design, Zeeshan Ali

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Perovskite oxides (ABO3) show wide range of functionalities originating from interplay of structural, spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedoms. The bulk perovskite structure could be controlled via conventional chemical substitution, though exploiting heterostructure engineering novel ground states could be observed which otherwise are absent in bulk. In this thesis, the interest is to explore the electro-magnetic phenomena as complex oxides are confined in heterostructures.

I first investigate electromagnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxial ruthenate: SrRuO3 (SRO); spatially confined between SrTiO3 (STO) i.e., STO5-SROn-STO5 with n = 1- and 2-unit cells. It …

Subject motion is a well-known confound in resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) and the analysis of functional connectivity. Consequently, several clean-up strategies have been established to minimize the impact of subject motion. Physiological signals in response to cardiac activity and respiration are also known to alter the apparent rs-fMRI connectivity. Comprehensive comparisons of common noise regression techniques showed that the “Independent Component Analysis based strategy for Automatic Removal of Motion Artifacts” (ICA-AROMA) was a preferred pre-processing technique for teenagers and adults. However, motion and physiological noise characteristics may differ substantially for older adults. Here, we present a comprehensive comparison of noise-regression …

A Numerical And Machine Learning Investigation Of Water Quality In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, From Estuaries To Shelf, Yanda Ou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, numerical and machine learning (ML) models are developed and adapted to investigate the water quality of the Barataria Estuary and the Louisiana-Texas (LaTex) Shelf in northern Gulf of Mexico. By using a 3-D hydrodynamic ROMS model, the salinity variability of the Barataria Estuary is found highly influenced by the Mississippi River discharges and man-made river diversion systems. The Mississippi River freshwater can intrude into the estuary through the middle and the east passes. Sensitivity tests indicate that decreases in lower estuarine salinity due to the elevated Mississippi River discharges are more apparent than the salinity increases due …

Teacher quality is one of the most significant factors contributing to student success, and Teacher Preparation Programs (TPPs) are traditionally responsible for teaching preservice teachers how to teach reading. Effective reading instruction is responsive, complex, and equitable. Acknowledgement of a disconnect between preparation programming and critical teacher knowledge for teachers of reading indicated a need for this exploratory mixed-methods study. The purpose of the current study, grounded by the theoretical framework of Sociocultural Theory, was to investigate what a select group of 21 preservice grades 1-3 elementary teachers were taught about teaching reading, preservice teachers’ theoretical orientations for teaching reading, …

Of Language And Thought: American Political Discourse, Normative Reason, And Essentially Contested Concepts, Riley Clare Valentine Oct 2022

Of Language And Thought: American Political Discourse, Normative Reason, And Essentially Contested Concepts, Riley Clare Valentine

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes progressive liberalism and neoliberalism as forms of normative reason that redefine specific political concepts, which are central to American liberalism – equality, liberty, the role of the State, and the pursuit of happiness. I contend that language is an important expression of normative reason. Language is how political reason and the norms accompanying it are expressed. I move through Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Barack Obama, exploring shifts in language and interpretations of political concepts through progressive liberal and neoliberal forms of normative reason. I argue that a tension emerges between progressive liberalism and neoliberalism, and a …

Event Horizons Are Tunable Factories Of Quantum Entanglement, Ivan Agullo, Anthony J. Brady, Dimitrios Kranas Oct 2022

Event Horizons Are Tunable Factories Of Quantum Entanglement, Ivan Agullo, Anthony J. Brady, Dimitrios Kranas

Faculty Publications

That event horizons generate quantum correlations via the Hawking effect is well known. We argue, however, that the creation of entanglement can be modulated, as desired, by appropriately illuminating the horizon. We adapt techniques from quantum information theory to quantify the entanglement produced during the Hawking process and show that, while ambient thermal noise (e.g. cosmic microwave background radiation) degrades it, the use of squeezed inputs can boost the nonseparability between the interior and exterior regions in a controlled manner. We further apply our ideas to analog event horizons concocted in the laboratory and insist that the ability to tune …

We combine single-pixel imaging and homodyne detection to perform full object recovery (phase and amplitude). Our method does not require any prior information about the object or the illuminating fields. As a demonstration, we reconstruct the optical properties of several semi-transparent objects and find that the reconstructed complex transmission has a phase precision of 0.02 radians and a relative amplitude precision of 0.01.

Extended Bethe-Richardson-Gaudin Ansatzes For The Solution Of A Mean-Field Plus Separable Pairing Model With Three Non-Degenerate J-Orbits, Feng Pan, Yingxin Wu, Shengze Guan, Zhibo Qu, Lianrong Dai, J. P. Draayer Oct 2022

Extended Bethe-Richardson-Gaudin Ansatzes For The Solution Of A Mean-Field Plus Separable Pairing Model With Three Non-Degenerate J-Orbits, Feng Pan, Yingxin Wu, Shengze Guan, Zhibo Qu, Lianrong Dai, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

Based on the Bethe-Richardson-Gaudin ansatz for the standard pairing model, extended Bethe- Richardson-Gaudin ansatzes for eigenvectors of a spherical mean-field plus separable pairing model with three non-degenerate j-orbits are proffered. It is shown that the number of variables appearing in the general extended ansatz eigenvectors for given number of pairs N is N(N+1)/2. More importantly, when one of the j orbits is 1/2, there are only 2N variables involved in the alternative extended ansatz eigenvectors, which, like the standard pairing model, can be solved efficiently. Numerical results for an application of the model in the ds-shell up to its half-filling …
