Effect Of Canopy Competition On Tree Growth And Development In Pine Hardwood Mixtures, Jacob Alexander Olichney
Effect Of Canopy Competition On Tree Growth And Development In Pine Hardwood Mixtures, Jacob Alexander Olichney
LSU Master's Theses
Mixed species forests may benefit from the reduction in intraspecific competition, although the benefit of species mixing has been shown to vary depending on mixture composition and environmental conditions. This study sought to test the effect of species composition in mixed forest stands on canopy development and growth of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda), and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua). Even-aged, grid planted monoculture and mixed species forest plots were established with hardwood monoculture plots at a 741 Trees Per Hectare (TPH), and pine monoculture and mixed species plots established at 1482 TPH. …

Review Of Structural Color In The Genus Chrysochroa Dejean, 1833 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), Able Chow
LSU Master's Theses
The jewel beetles, (Coleoptera: Buprestidae Leach, 1815), is the eighth most speciose coleopteran family, with the majority of its members possessing diverse bright, saturated structural coloration of multilayer origin. This study focuses on the genus Chrysochroa Dejean, 1833, which includes some of the most brilliantly and charismatically colored buprestid species. While members of Chrysochroa are prised by entomologists amateurs and professional and are well-represented in museum collections, the evolution and ecology of their structural color remain underexplored. Twenty-eight select taxa including exemplars from all 13 subgenera of Chrysochroa were investigated to provide an overview of the objective optical properties and …
Color, Culture, And The Implications For Emotional, Cognitive, And Behavioral Reactions, Renee Lucas
Color, Culture, And The Implications For Emotional, Cognitive, And Behavioral Reactions, Renee Lucas
LSU Master's Theses
Color plays a significant role in life, influencing how we perceive things, how symbols change in meaning, how brands, logos, and pictograms are communicated, as well as how our emotions are perceived and how our moods are affected. For designers, advertisers, and visual communicators, color is crucial because it has a big impact on how people perceive, relate to, and value an image or advertisement. There are many factors that play a role when people develop their personal color interpretations – one being culture. The purpose of this study is to investigate the links between culture, color, and individuals’ cognitive, …

Interactive Industrial Energy Assessment Learning Platform Using 360-Degree Virtual Reality Contents, Laleh Ghanbari
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The traditional passive industrial energy assessment training methods included low direct involvement of students, and they lacked an engaging learning environment. Since the main task for energy assessment is visual inspection and data collection, traditional passive training methods were not able to provide hands-on experience for the students. An active training method was needed to make the current industrial energy assessment training more efficient and effective, a method which provides the opportunity for students to have more interaction with the training environment. In this study, an interactive industrial energy assessment learning platform using 360ᵒ virtual reality contents was developed. The …

A Field-Deployable Quartz Crystal Microbalance System For Gas Detection, Jongyoon Park
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) has been widely studied as a mass sensing technique in laboratory environments and has shown a wide range of industrial applications such as food quality control, various forms of chemical detection, and biomolecular recognition under gas phase as well as liquid phase media. The construction of multi-sensor arrays combined with special sensor coatings enables multiple analyte detections and discrimination of multi-analyte along with statistical analysis. Despite the great sensing capabilities of QCM and growing interest in practical applications beyond the laboratory setup, most QCM studies are still performed in laboratory settings with benchtop QCM instruments. Therefore, …
Asexual Dramaturgies: Reading For Asexuality In The Western Theatrical Canon, Anna Maria Ruffino Broussard
Asexual Dramaturgies: Reading For Asexuality In The Western Theatrical Canon, Anna Maria Ruffino Broussard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Asexuality has recently gained recognition and visibility as a legitimate sexual orientation and identity standpoint that is usually defined as lacking sexual desire for any gender. Popular culture and the academy have both seen the emergence of a robust conversation about the definition and import of asexuality, recognizing the term as an umbrella concept covering an ever-diversifying array of identities. Within the nascent critical discourse on asexuality, theorists have sought to identify asexuality as a sexual orientation, to rethink our society’s sexual normativity, and to question compulsory sexuality, or the assumption that sexual desire is intrinsic to all people, thus …
Migration And Displacement In Twenty-First Century Magical Realist Fiction, Laura Duncan Fontenot
Migration And Displacement In Twenty-First Century Magical Realist Fiction, Laura Duncan Fontenot
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In “Migration and Displacement in Twenty-First Century Magical Realist Fiction” I discuss identity development and the search for belonging of displaced people within twenty-first century magical realist novels. In each instance, the characters undergo some form of change heralded by a magical moment or moments. The “magic” allows the authors to literalize underlying cultural tensions by physically altering some aspect of a character. The changes are not mere metaphors, they are literal, bodily transformations. The first stage of this process are magical thresholds that allow passage in space and time far beyond the conventions of reality. A magical threshold literalizes …

An Exploration Of Trained Reading Recovery Teachers' Perceptions About The Program And Subsequent Influences On Select Teachers' Views Of Reading Instruction, Ellen Brupbacher Daugherty
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As a foundational learning skill set, reading acquisition is the basis on which all other formal educational knowledge is built. In the state of Louisiana, 42.3% (2022) of first graders are not reading on grade level, therefore providing targeted intervention by highly trained teachers is crucial for accelerating student progress. Considering the paucity of research on the impact of Reading Recovery® (RR) training on teachers’ capacity to teach, as well as my personal experience, the purpose of this phenomenologically informed case study was to explore the perceptions of RR training and subsequent influences on teaching pedagogical practices. This qualitative study …

Identification Of Quantitative Trait Loci (Qtls) For Resistance To Bacterial Leaf Streak: Xanthomonas Translucens Using Qtl And Association Mapping In Three Populations Of Soft Red Winter Wheat, Benjamin Tyler Meritt
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Bacterial leaf streak (BLS) and black chaff, caused by Xanthomonas translucens pv. undulosa (Xtu), can be a very destructive disease of wheat, especially in the warmer, wetter areas of the Southeastern U.S. Yield losses of up to 40 percent have been recorded in some cases in southern wheat growing regions. With no effective agronomic or chemical method of disease control, identification of genetic resistance is seen as a promising solution. Three soft red winter wheat populations (GAWN, ARK-SNP, and AGS 2060- AGS 2035 DH) representative of soft red winter wheat germplasm in the southeastern U.S. developed by …

Although zooplankton play a substantial role in the biological carbon pump and serve as a crucial link between primary producers and higher trophic level consumers, the skillful representation of zooplankton is not often a focus of ocean biogeochemical models. Systematic evaluations of zooplankton in models could improve their representation, but so far, ocean biogeochemical skill assessment of Earth system model (ESM) ensembles have not included zooplankton. Here we use a recently developed global, observationally based map of mesozooplankton biomass to assess the skill of mesozooplankton in six CMIP6 ESMs. We also employ a biome-based assessment of the ability of these …

Dissolved oxygen (DO) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) represent reciprocal sides of aquatic metabolism. In closed systems, absolute DO and DIC changes follow a ~ 1 : 1 ratio, but in open systems coupling depends on mixing, air–sea gas exchange, and anaerobic respiration. To quantify DO–DIC controls in coastal waters, we evaluated their concentrations and stable isotopes together with water quality and physical conditions across the hypoxic zone off the Louisiana continental shelf in July 2002 and July 2003. This area is characterized by high yet variable productivity and strong seasonal changes in vertical stratification and river discharge. Prior to …

Restorative environments are known as places where human stress can be decreased through restoration of depleted psychological resources. Since the efficiency of natural environments in restoration is supported by the literature, designing a restorative built environment can be obtained by integrating natural objects into built environments. However, various factors may lead to the failure of design intentions in real restorative environments such as visual stimuli and their properties. In addition, previous literature has widely used images and immersive virtual environments (IVEs) to deliver restorative environments in the design stage, and the impact of the delivery methods on visual properties needs …

Sustainable buildings are designed to reduce energy use and other environmental impacts and to provide indoor environmental conditions that maximize well-being and satisfaction among building occupants. However, occupants' comfort in and satisfaction with such buildings has been inconsistent. Evidence indicates occupants' expectations of indoor building environments influence their perceptions of climatic conditions (e.g., temperature) and comfort while in buildings. Accordingly, it is important to better understand a priori expectations associated with sustainable buildings. An online experiment examined the influence of exposure to a depiction of a sustainable vs. a conventional building on a priori expectations of indoor environmental conditions/quality (IEQ) …

The corn earworm/bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), in the United States is targeted by transgenic corn and cotton expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins. Previous studies have shown that resistance to Cry1A/Cry2A Bt corn has occurred in the field. In this study, we established 103 F2 isolines by mass-mating of H. zea populations collected during 2018 and 2019 in four southeastern U.S. states: Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina. Dissection of mated females showed that at least 92.7% of the isolines were originated from single matings, suggesting that the applied mass-mating method is a suitable approach to establish H. zea F2 isolines. …

This study evaluated the use of cost-effective alternative materials in the formulation of novel low-cost Engineered Geopolymer Composite (EGC) materials for repair and new construction of transportation infrastructure in Region 6. Previous studies and reports have shown that EGCs have excellent mechanical properties, which makes them an eco-friendly and more sustainable alternative to Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs). However, the mass adoption of these emerging composites is expected to be hindered by their cost, which is mainly driven by the use of PVA reinforcing fibers, silica fume (SF), and manufactured microsilica sand (MS). To address this key shortcoming, novel low-cost EGC …

Academic librarians already wear many hats, juggling a multitude of skills and duties in order to meet the needs of their patrons. When one of those hats is parenthood, however, balancing work and home life can sometimes seem like an insurmountable task. In this chapter we explore how and why academic librarians who are also parents experience burnout, as well as methods used to combat burnout by examining the results of a nationally distributed mixed-methods survey. The survey also addresses practices to combat and prevent burnout, both on a personal and institutional level, and the perceptions of their effectiveness.
