Behavior Of Euphorbia Heterophylla Seed Bank., Vernon B. Langston Jan 1983

Behavior Of Euphorbia Heterophylla Seed Bank., Vernon B. Langston

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Short term burial of freshly harvested seed and soil disturbances in agricultural populations of wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) indicated a very low carry over of seeds into the second season after dissemination. After seeds were buried at 10, 50, 100, and 200 mm in the fall; 4%, 81%, 30% and 1%, respectively, produced seedlings during the following growing season, and only 3%, 1%, < 1%, and 3% of the seeds, respectively, were viable after one year. Soil disturbances (tillage) did not affect seedling recruitment or longevity of wild poinsettia seed. Early planting dates (May 1) of soybeans required 6 weeks of weed-free maintenance to prevent serious reinfestation and subsequent yield reductions in fields with a high agronomic seed bank of wild poinsettia, whereas for late planting dates (June 10) 3 weeks of weed-free maintenance was required. No significant difference in yield was detected between one or two cultivations for either planting date.

A Study Of Several Macrocyclic Beta-Ketoamines And Their Metal Chelates., Charles Louis Modenbach Iii Jan 1983

A Study Of Several Macrocyclic Beta-Ketoamines And Their Metal Chelates., Charles Louis Modenbach Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two new series of macrocyclic (beta)-ketoamines and several of their metal chelates have been prepared and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The two series of (beta)-ketoamines are of type: and. where n = 3,6,7, and 10. They were prepared by reaction of macrocyclic (beta)-diketones with ammonia or ethylenediamine. These compounds were found to exist predominantly in the ketoamine form. A survey was conducted to determine the metal chelation behavior of the macrocyclic (beta)-ketoamines and a few (beta)-ketoamines derived from acetylacetone. The metals and oxocations used in this study were Be(II), Mg(II), Al(III), …

Activity Of Myo-Inositol-1-Phosphate Synthase In The Epididymal Spermatozoa Of Rams., M. W. Loewus, R. W. Wright, K. R. Bondioli, D. L. Bedgar, A. Karl Jan 1983

Activity Of Myo-Inositol-1-Phosphate Synthase In The Epididymal Spermatozoa Of Rams., M. W. Loewus, R. W. Wright, K. R. Bondioli, D. L. Bedgar, A. Karl

Faculty Publications

Studies of six 8-9-month-old rams showed that the specific activities of myoinositol-1-phosphate synthase (EC 5.5.1.4) were highest in epididymal spermatozoa, intermediate in testis and lowest in epididymal tissue. The activity per spermatozoon decreased from caput to cauda. The levels of activity of myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase in ejaculated spermatozoa from four 3-year-old rams and the seminal vesicles of two 3-year-old rams were insignificant, but in pooled Sertoli cells from the testes of young lambs, the specific activity was much lower than in epididymal spermatozoa although activity per cell was of the same order of magnitude. We conclude that epididymal spermatozoa contain a …

Restricted Feeding Of Broiler Breeders., H. R. Wilson, D. R. Ingram, R. H. Harms Jan 1983

Restricted Feeding Of Broiler Breeders., H. R. Wilson, D. R. Ingram, R. H. Harms

Faculty Publications

Two experiments were conducted to compare the effects of various feed restriction programs during the growing and laying periods on body weight, egg production, fertility, and hatchability. In the first experiment, Cobb color-sexed broiler breeders were fed one of three grower programs (full feed, skip-a-day, or low protein) from 8 to 24 weeks of age. Two layer programs (full feed and restricted) were fed from 24 to 67 weeks of age. Overall the skip-a-day grower treatment gave the best results of the programs tested. This treatment resulted in the significantly lowest body weights, greatest delay in sexual maturity, and highest …

Excess Manganese Ingestion In The Chick., L. L. Southern, D. H. Baker Jan 1983

Excess Manganese Ingestion In The Chick., L. L. Southern, D. H. Baker

Faculty Publications

Two experiments were conducted with young chicks to investigate effects of excess manganese, (Mn) ingestion and to compare MnCl2 . 4H2O, MnSO4 . H2O, MnO2, and MnCO3 as sources of dietary Mn activity. Each source of Mn was added to a conventional corn-soybean meal diet to supply 3000, 4000, or 5000 mg/kg Mn. High levels of dietary Mn from MnSO4 . H2O and MnCl2 . 4H2O depressed growth slightly; MnO2 and MnCO3 did not affect chick performance. Manganese dioxide contained less Mn activity than MnCO3, MnSO4 . H2O, or MnCl2 . 4H2O as assessed by relative depressions in hemoglobin and …

Eimeria Acervulina Infection And The Zinc-Copper Interrelationship In The Chick., L. L. Southern, D. H. Baker

Faculty Publications

An experiment was conducted with young chicks to investigate the effect of duodenal coccidiosis caused by Eimeria acervulina infection on the interrelationship between dietary copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). A corn-soybean meal diet (devoid of Zn fortification) was supplemented with Zn (50 mg/kg) or Cu (250 mg/kg), or both; these diets were fed to control or coccidiosis-infected chicks. The coccidial infection depressed rate and efficiency of weight gain. Excess dietary Cu had no effect on performance of control or infected chicks. Zinc supplementation did not affect performance of control chicks, but it improved both rate and efficiency of weight gain …

Pigeons acquired a different four‐response chain each session by responding sequentially on three keys in the presence of a sequence of four colors. The response chain was maintained by food presentation under a fixed‐ratio schedule. Errors produced a brief timeout but did not reset the chain. Each day there were four 15‐minute sessions, with a 10‐minute intersession interval. Cumulative dose‐effect curves for phencyclidine, pentobarbital, and d‐amphetamine were obtained by giving an injection before each of the four sessions; successive injections increased the cumulative dose in equally spaced logarithmic steps. For comparison, non‐cumulative doses of each drug (i.e., doses not preceded …

A Non-Hemolytic, Group B Streptococcus Infection Of Cultured Bullfrogs, Rana Catesbeiana, In Brazil., R. L. Amborski, T. G. Snider, R. L. Thune, D. D. Culley

Faculty Publications

A systemic streptococcal infection in cultured bullfrogs in Brazil was characterized by necrotizing splenitis and hepatitis with hepatic and renal hemorrhage. A non-hemolytic Group B Streptococcus appeared to be the cause of the lesions, and the stimulus for the splenic reticuloendothelial hyperplasia observed in the animals. Stress may have been a factor in the development of the pathological condition.

Vitamin A has, apart from its function in the visual pigments, general effects on several organs. Early signs of vitamin A deficiency include keratinization of epithelia and hyperkeratosis of the skin. To elucidate a generalized function for vitamin A, we have taken the approach of tracing the vitamin from its storage site in the liver via its blood transport by the retinol-binding protein (RBP) to its uptake by susceptible cells. We have also examined the intracellular occurrence of vitamin A as regards its binding to specific receptor proteins. Here we summarize data on the amino acid sequences of several vitamin …

Examined the large pogonophoran tube worm Riftia pachyptila, clam Calyptogena magnifica, crab Bythograea thermydron, polychaete worm Alvinella pompejana, and an unidentified zoarcid fish. In general, enzymic activities found in the tissues of the vent animals were qualitatively and quantitatively similar to those of phylogenetically related shallow-living marine species, suggesting that the types of energy metabolism pathways, and the potential flux rates through these pathways, are similar in both groups. -from Authors

Urinary Sodium Excretion And Blood Pressure In Children: Absence Of A Reproducible Association, Richard Cooper, Kiang Liu, Maurizio Trevisan, William Miller, Jeremiah Stamler

Faculty Publications

A previous report by our group described a cross-sectional association between urinary sodium excretion and blood pressure (BP) in children. Attempts were made to reproduce these findings in two subsequent studies carried out with an identical protocol. Although descriptive results were similar and the correlations between measures of body size and blood pressure were reproduced, a clear-cut association between 7-day mean urinary sodium excretion and BP was observed only in the first of the three studies. These results could imply inadequate study methods, an inconsistent and weak relationship, or the absence of a relationship altogether. © 1983 American Heart Association, …

A population-based survey of 134 white men, recruited from the Chicago People’s Gas Company labor force, was carried out to examine the association between sodium-lithium (Na-Li) countertransport and hypertension. Of the 134 participants in this industry-sponsored periodic health examination, 64 were normotensive and 70 were either taking antihypertensive medications or had a systolic pressure ≥ 140 or a diastolic pressure ≥ 90 mm Hg. The hypertensives were older and more overweight. Countertransport was significantly higher in hypertensives than in normotensives. Among the three subgroups of hypertensives - untreated borderline (140/90 to 160/95 mm Hg), untreated definite (over 160/95 mm Hg), …

Is The Period Of Rapidly Declining Adult Mortality In The United States Coming To And End?, R. Cooper, R. Cohen, A. Amiry Jan 1983

Is The Period Of Rapidly Declining Adult Mortality In The United States Coming To And End?, R. Cooper, R. Cohen, A. Amiry

Faculty Publications

Age-standardized death rates from all causes for persons age 35-74 fell 23 per cent, 1968-1979. The monotonic decline was interrupted by only one period of excess influenza mortality. In the late 1970s, however, the decline in mortality decelerated and no further decrease was observed, 1979-1981. The recurrence of epidemic influenza contributed significantly to this trend although it would appear that the underlying mortality pattern has begun to change.

The Lifestyle Of Merchant Seamen: A Sociological Analysis Of Occupationally Induced Marginality., Craig Joseph Forsyth Jan 1983

The Lifestyle Of Merchant Seamen: A Sociological Analysis Of Occupationally Induced Marginality., Craig Joseph Forsyth

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Marginality is a theme which pervades the social existence of merchant seamen. Work takes place in a setting without long term personal commitments to job, to place, or to co-workers. On the beach, social relations tend toward the transitory, and where long term relations are established, the seaman is forced to partial participation. This research explores the influence of this occupation on social marginality and social integration of its members. Data were collected using a survey instrument from a sample of 251 seamen, both officers and crew. Factors determining variance in levels of alienation are examined, as well as the …

A Taxonomy For Industrial Salesforce Job Activities., William C. Moncrief Iii Jan 1983

A Taxonomy For Industrial Salesforce Job Activities., William C. Moncrief Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A taxonomy developed of specific selling activities of industrial salespeople was developed to differentiate "types" of salespeople. The taxonomy was developed based on the responses of 1393 salespeople from 51 companies to a survey of the frequency with which they performed activities, and the time spent to perform each activity. The first stage of the research was the compilation of an exhaustive list of sales activities. These activities were collected from a series of focus groups and personal interviews. The questionnaire was formulated based on the 121 sales activities collected from the focus groups. Two scales were designed and implemented …

On The Numbers Of Bases And Circuits In Simple Binary Matroids, James G. Oxley Jan 1983

On The Numbers Of Bases And Circuits In Simple Binary Matroids, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

Quirk and Seymour have shown that a connected simple graph has at least as many spanning trees as circuits. This paper extends and strengthens their result by showing that in a simple binary matroid M the quotient of the number of bases by the number of circuits is at least 2. Moreover, if M has no coloops and rank r, this quotient exceeds 6(r + 1)/19. © 1983, Academic Press Inc. (London) Limited. All rights reserved.

The Mechanism Of Aldosterone Secretion In Dairy Cattle And The Circadian Rhythm Of Aldosterone, Cortisol And Progesterone In Dairy Cattle During Summer In Louisiana., Teodora Javier Aranas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of the basic mechanism of aldosterone secretion was performed on 15 month old Holstein heifers. Animals were fitted with indwelling jugular catheters and estrous cycle was synchronized with PGF(,2(alpha)). Effects of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and angiotensin II (AII) on the secretion of aldosterone, cortisol, progesterone and other parameters such as sodium and potassium that influenced aldosterone secretion were analyzed by Latin Square design, replicated twice. Treatments consisted of intravenous injections of 200 I.U. ACTH/animal, 18 mg AII/animal, or physiological saline. Blood samples were collected before treatment (0 min), at fifteen and thirty minutes after treatment, and at hourly …

Scattering Of Electrons By Hydrogen Atoms., Dipakkumar Harshadrai Oza Jan 1983

Scattering Of Electrons By Hydrogen Atoms., Dipakkumar Harshadrai Oza

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The scattering of electrons by hydrogen atoms at intermediate energy range, where the problem is difficult due to electron atom correlations, is investigated. All possible processes of elastic scattering, excitation and ionization are considered. A simplified model is considered in which all terms involving non-zero angular momenta are neglected. Elastic scattering and excitation cross-sections for the 2s and 3s states are calculated for this model with the use of close-coupling expansion with four pseudostate bases of rather different character. Pseudothreshold structure is observed for ('1)S states and removed with a T-matrix fitting procedure. It is found that, after removal of …

Growth And Metabolic Responses Of Saccharum Species In Relation To Flooding., A. B. M. Mafizur Rahman Jan 1983

Growth And Metabolic Responses Of Saccharum Species In Relation To Flooding., A. B. M. Mafizur Rahman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Some growth and metabolic responses of different clones of Saccharum in relation to their flood-tolerance were examined. Clones grown in soil subjected to flooding demonstrated their ability to produce water roots as a means of morphological adaptation to flooding. Significant differences were observed among the clones with respect to the quantities of water roots produced, but all the clones were visually tolerant to flooding. Clones representing Saccharum spontaneum followed by the commercial hybrid produced the maximum quantities of water root under the flooded condition. The clones of Saccharum barberi and Saccharum robustum produced the least quantities of water root. Artificially …
