The purpose of this study was to examine whether a 9-month intensive lifestyle intervention could lead to weight loss and improve cardiovascular risk factors among young women with both gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and newly diagnosed diabetes. A total of 83 young women, who had GDM and were subsequently diagnosed as type 2 diabetes at an average of 2.6 years after delivery, participated in a 9-month intensive lifestyle intervention and a follow-up survey at 6–9 years postintervention. After the 9-month intervention, these women had a weight loss of 2.90 kg (−4.02% of initial weight), decreased waist circumference (−3.12 cm), body …
A Leray Model For The Orlik–Solomon Algebra, Christin Bibby, Graham Denham, Eva Maria Feichtner
A Leray Model For The Orlik–Solomon Algebra, Christin Bibby, Graham Denham, Eva Maria Feichtner
Faculty Publications
We construct a combinatorial generalization of the Leray models for hyperplane arrangement complements. Given a matroid and some combinatorial blow-up data, we give a presentation for a bigraded (commutative) differential graded algebra. If the matroid is realizable over C, this is the familiar Morgan model for a hyperplane arrangement complement, embedded in a blowup of projective space. In general, we obtain a CDGA that interpolates between the Chow ring of a matroid and the Orlik–Solomon algebra. Our construction can also be expressed in terms of sheaves on combinatorial blowups of geometric lattices. As a key technical device, we construct a …

Reference Database Of Teeth Images From The Family Bovidae, Juliet K. Brophy, Gregory J. Matthews
Faculty Publications
Researchers typically rely on fossils from the Family Bovidae to generate African paleoenvironmental reconstructions due to their strict ecological tendencies. Bovids have dominated the southern African fauna for the past four million years and, therefore, dominate the fossil faunal assemblages, especially isolated teeth. Traditionally, researchers reference modern and fossil comparative collections to identify teeth. However, researchers are limited by the specific type and number of bovids at each institution. B.O.V.I.D. (Bovidae Occlusal Visual IDentification) is a repository of images of the occlusal surface of bovid teeth. The dataset currently includes extant bovids from 7 tribes and 20 species (~3900). B.O.V.I.D. …

A Paleo-Perspective On West Antarctic Ice Sheet Retreat, Philip J. Bart, Matthew Kratochvil
A Paleo-Perspective On West Antarctic Ice Sheet Retreat, Philip J. Bart, Matthew Kratochvil
Faculty Publications
Geological records of ice sheet collapse can provide perspective on the ongoing retreat of grounded and floating ice. An abrupt retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) that occurred during the early deglaciation is well recorded on the eastern Ross Sea continental shelf. There, an ice shelf breakup at 12.3 ± 0.6 cal. (calibrated) kyr BP caused accelerated ice-mass loss from the Bindschadler Ice Stream (BIS). The accelerated mass loss led to a significant negative mass balance that re-organized WAIS flow across the central and eastern Ross Sea. By ~ 11.5 ± 0.3 cal kyr BP, dynamic thinning of …

The interactive corrosion between stainless steel 316 (SS) and International Simple Glass (ISG) has been studied for 12 months. The samples were placed in intimate contact to create crevice corrosion conditions on SS in a 0.6 M NaCl solution with and without 142 ppm dissolved silica species enriched in 29Si. Corrosion on SS was observed with large pits located close to the crevice mouth at the end of 1 year in 0.6 M NaCl solution. The SS corrosion was also associated with the dissolution of nearby glass in a highly localized manner. When the leaching solution was saturated with …

Dual Nature Of Magnetic Nanoparticle Dispersions Enables Control Over Short-Range Attraction And Long-Range Repulsion Interactions, Ahmed Al Harraq, Aubry A. Hymel, Emily Lin, Thomas M. Truskett, Bhuvnesh Bharti
Faculty Publications
Competition between attractive and repulsive interactions drives the formation of complex phases in colloidal suspensions. A major experimental challenge lies in decoupling independent roles of attractive and repulsive forces in governing the equilibrium morphology and long-range spatial distribution of assemblies. Here, we uncover the ‘dual nature’ of magnetic nanoparticle dispersions, particulate and continuous, enabling control of the short-range attraction and long-range repulsion (SALR) between suspended microparticles. We show that non-magnetic microparticles suspended in an aqueous magnetic nanoparticle dispersion simultaneously experience a short-range depletion attraction due to the particulate nature of the fluid in competition with an in situ tunable long-range …

Assessing Aerodynamic Loads On Low-Rise Buildings Considering Reynolds Number And Turbulence Effects: A Review, Md Faiaz Khaled, Aly Mousaad Aly
Faculty Publications
This paper presents an extensive review of existing techniques used in estimating design wind pressures considering Reynolds number and turbulence effects, as well as a case study of a reference building investigated experimentally. We shed light on the limitations of current aerodynamic testing techniques, provisions in design standards, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods to predict wind-induced pressures. The paper highlights the reasons for obstructing the standardization of the wind tunnel method. Moreover, we introduce improved experimental and CFD techniques to tackle the identified challenges. CFD provides superior and efficient performance by employing wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES) and hybrid RANS-LES …

Breast cancer screening is an important prevention component as it can reduce cancer mortality and improve survival. Understanding patterns of adherence to screening recommendations is essential to guide health promotion strategies and policy implementation efforts. The 1999 Alberta screening guidelines were used to determine screening status for eligible female participants in Alberta's Tomorrow Project (n = 4,972), a longitudinal province-based cohort. Screening patterns were derived based on screening status assessed at enrollment (2001–2008) and follow-up (2008–2011). Information on reason for screening was also collected at each time point. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess potential predictors of adherence to …

We propose a method to predict when a woman will develop breast cancer (BCa) from her lifestyle and health history features. To address this objective, we use data from the Alberta's Tomorrow Project of 18,288 women to train Individual Survival Distribution (ISD) models to predict an individual's Breast-Cancer-Onset (BCaO) probability curve. We show that our three-step approach-(1) filling missing data with multiple imputations by chained equations, followed by (2) feature selection with the multivariate Cox method, and finally, (3) using MTLR to learn an ISD model-produced the model with the smallest L1-Hinge loss among all calibrated models with comparable C-index. …

A Systematic Literature Review Of Anti-Discrimination Design Strategies In The Digital Sharing Economy, Miroslav Tushev, Fahimeh Ebrahimi, Anas Mahmoud
Faculty Publications
Applications of the Digital Sharing Economy (DSE), such as Uber, Airbnb, and TaskRabbit, have become a main facilitator of economic growth and shared prosperity in modern-day societies. However, recent research has revealed that the participation of minority groups in DSE activities is often hindered by different forms of bias and discrimination. Evidence of such behavior has been documented across almost all domains of DSE, including ridesharing, lodging, and freelancing. However, little is known about the underlying design decisions of DSE platforms which allow certain demographics of the market to gain unfair advantage over others. To bridge this knowledge gap, in …

Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is a major postharvest disease that reduces the shelf life of mango (Mangifera indica L. cv. Nam Dokmai), an indigenous crop of Thailand. Curcumin, a substance in turmeric, has antimicrobial activity, which is hypothesized to be enhanced in the form of nanoparticles. In this research, curcumin-loaded zein nanoparticles (CZNP) were synthesized using a liquid-liquid dispersion method and were incorporated into zein coating material. The effect against C. gloeosporioides was evaluated relative to curcumin and zein mixture solution (CZ) as a control. The results showed that the solution of free curcumin at 100 μg/ml (CZ100) was …

The commercial development of unconventional resources with multiply fractured horizontal wells has been in the spotlight over the last ten years because of the significant contribution of unconventional oil and gas (UOG) reservoirs to the total US oil and gas production. UOG reservoirs contain multiscale fractures with heterogeneous properties, so the focus has been on efficient and accurate models that can account for these fractures individually. One of such models is the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM), which has been applied to various types of fractured reservoirs. This work shows that the application of EDFM in fractured tight rocks yields …

Water is essential for survival, but one in three individuals worldwide (2.2 billion people) lacks access to safe drinking water. Water intake requirements largely reflect water turnover (WT), the water used by the body each day. We investigated the determinants of human WT in 5604 people from the ages of 8 days to 96 years from 23 countries using isotope-tracking (2H) methods. Age, body size, and composition were significantly associated with WT, as were physical activity, athletic status, pregnancy, socioeconomic status, and environmental characteristics (latitude, altitude, air temperature, and humidity). People who lived in countries with a low human development …

Global Shockwaves Of The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai Volcano Eruption Measured At Ground Stations, Chunyan Li
Global Shockwaves Of The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai Volcano Eruption Measured At Ground Stations, Chunyan Li
Faculty Publications
The eruption of the Tonga volcano created globally propagating spherical shockwaves in the atmosphere. Analyses are done to data from two southern U.S. stations of the author sampling at 3–21 s intervals and 189 weather stations at 1–5 min intervals. The shockwaves arrived from two routes in the atmosphere: the shortest spherical arc and the longer spherical arc through the antipole. In most stations, signals up to the 6th path of shockwaves were recorded as the waves traveled around the globe multiple times. The speed of shockwaves is estimated to be 309.5 ± 2.9 m/s, consistent with the speed …
Ordering Circuits Of Matroids, Cameron Crenshaw, James Oxley
Ordering Circuits Of Matroids, Cameron Crenshaw, James Oxley
Faculty Publications
The cycles of a graph give a natural cyclic ordering to their edge-sets, and these orderings are consistent in that two edges are adjacent in one cycle if and only if they are adjacent in every cycle in which they appear together. An orderable matroid is one whose set of circuits admits such a consistent ordering. In this paper, we consider the question of determining which matroids are orderable. Although we are able to answer this question for non-binary matroids, it remains open for binary matroids. We give examples to provide insight into the potential difficulty of this question in …

Deep Learning For Predicting The Thermomechanical Behavior Of Shape Memory Polymers, Diego Segura Ibarra, Jacob Mathews, Fan Li, Hongfang Lu, Guoqiang Li, Jinyuan Chen
Faculty Publications
Thermomechanical constitutive modeling is essential for shape memory polymers (SMPs) to be used in engineering structures and devices. However, the classical method of deriving constitutive models is difficult, time consuming, and relies heavily on trial and error. In this work, we aim to decrease the time and resources needed to develop new thermomechanical models for SMPs. The method proposed in this work uses deep learning (DL) to predict the thermomechanical behavior of SMPs under thermomechanical cycles. Particularly, a semicrystalline two-way shape memory polymer (2W-SMP) is selected as an example. Predicting such behavior will give insight on the SMP properties and …
Estimation Of Economic Risk From Coastal Natural Hazards In Louisiana, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz
Estimation Of Economic Risk From Coastal Natural Hazards In Louisiana, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Louisiana, U.S.A., is among the most vulnerable areas globally to coastal natural hazards, with risk vulnerability likely increasing. The risks associated with non-tropical-cyclone hazards in Louisiana’s coastal zone have been understudied. This research enhances present and future (i.e., 2050) Louisiana risk assessment using locally-weighted, model-based hazard frequency/intensity and population projections.
Results suggest that property risks associated with extreme cold temperature and tornado are and will remain costlier than those for hail and lightning. Property risks of extreme cold temperature and hail are projected to decrease with the expected warming temperatures, with those of all four of these hazards peaking in …

We present a solution for the nonequilibrium dynamics of an interacting disordered system. The approach adapts the combination of the equilibrium dynamical mean-field theory and the equilibrium coherent potential approximation methods to the nonequilibrium many-body formalism, using the Kadanoff-Baym-Keldysh complex time contour, for the dynamics of interacting disordered systems away from equilibrium. We use our time domain solution to obtain the equilibrium density of states of the disordered interacting system described by the Anderson-Hubbard model, bypassing the necessity for the cumbersome analytical continuation process. We further apply the nonequilibrium solution to the interaction quench problem for an isolated disordered system. …

Numerical Investigation Of Heat Generation And Accumulation Contributing To Elevated Temperature In Msw Landfills, Alborz Fathinezhad
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Landfills are complex geostructures which contains organic and inorganic municipal, and in some cases industrial, wastes and are expected to remain operational for long times. Due to the complex nature of physical, chemical, biological, and thermal reactions that carry on within the depths of a landfill, unexpected incidents such as elevated temperatures could become inevitable. While uncommon to happen, elevated temperatures cause health and environmental issues such as odors, rapid settlements, slope instabilities. In addition, elevated temperatures can negatively impact engineered components in composite bottom liners, cover systems, leachate collection, and gas extraction and recovery systems.
Air intrusion into municipal …

The anomalous low-energy E2-related behavior of a triaxially deformed nuclei is examined within the framework of the interacting boson model. The results show striking features that include a B(E2;41+→21+)/B(E2;21+→01+)< 1.0 transition rate and a E(41+)/E(21+)>2.0 excitation energy ratio that can be tracked back to a finite-N effect, which in a large-N limit of the theory yields normal results for a stable γ-deformation. This description is shown to explain experimentally observed results in 172Pt and 168Os, and in doing so yields a deeper understanding of the physical features of a soft triaxially-deformed …
