Examination Of Potato Virus X Subgenomic Rnas: Their Number, Their Coding Properties, And Their Possible Encapsidation., Mary A. Price
Examination Of Potato Virus X Subgenomic Rnas: Their Number, Their Coding Properties, And Their Possible Encapsidation., Mary A. Price
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Potato Virus X is the type member of the Potexvirus group. It is a flexuous rod containing a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA. Previous studies have shown that during infection Potato Virus X synthesizes subgenomic RNAs to express internal cistrons. These studies demonstrated that six subgenomic RNAs could be detected in total RNA extracts from PVX-infected tissue; however, only four internal ORFs are predicted within the genomic RNA. Furthermore, two particle size populations were detected, one containing genomic RNA and one containing the coat protein mRNA. In the present investigation experiments were designed to examine PVX-encoded subgenomic RNAs with regard to their …
Modeling Nonlinear Dynamics In Nasdaq Stock Returns., Salil Kumar Sarkar
Modeling Nonlinear Dynamics In Nasdaq Stock Returns., Salil Kumar Sarkar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation investigates the nonlinear dynamics of the returns generation process of individual stocks listed on national market system from national association of security dealers automated quotation system (NASDAQ/NMS) and compares them to a similar sample from New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). One of the most prominent tools that has emerged for characterizing nonlinear processes is the Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARCH) model, and its various extensions, the most significant being the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model. From the stocks listed on the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) tapes, a group of NASDAQ/NMS and NYSE stocks are chosen …
Parallel And Distributed Algorithms For A Class Of Graph-Related Computational Problems., Rajanarayanan Subbiah
Parallel And Distributed Algorithms For A Class Of Graph-Related Computational Problems., Rajanarayanan Subbiah
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There exist at least two models of parallel computing, namely, shared-memory and message-passing. This research addresses problems in both these types of systems, and proposes efficient parallel (Shared-Memory Model) and distributed (message-passing) algorithms for a variety of graph related computational problems. In part I, we design algorithms for three generic problems in distributed systems: set manipulation, network structure recognition and facility placement. We present optimal distributed algorithms for recognizing rectangular-mesh networks. The time and message complexity of our algorithm is linear in the number of nodes in the network. We also lay the foundation for the recognition of 2-reducible, outer-planar …

Curriculum Reform From Multicultural Perspectives: The Analysis Of An Urban School District's Systemic Process. (Volumes I And Ii)., Linda Johnson Stelly
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Crises in the economic and social conditions of the underrepresented have led to the analysis of education and the schooling process for responses to and explanations for these inequalities. The purpose of this ethnographically informed, autobiographic case study is to examine the relational and contradictory dynamics of an urban southern school district's systemic process of educational reform from multicultural perspectives. The case study examines the rules, roles and relationships of key change agents and stakeholders as they define education from multicultural perspectives in the process of change. The research further examines the developmental processes necessary to transform the existing curriculum …
Effects Of Propiconazole On Morphology, Development, And Epidemiology Of Rhizoctonia Solani, Causal Agent Of Rice Sheath Blight., Elly M. Van Eeckhout
Effects Of Propiconazole On Morphology, Development, And Epidemiology Of Rhizoctonia Solani, Causal Agent Of Rice Sheath Blight., Elly M. Van Eeckhout
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Propiconazole was inhibitory to mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani in vitro. Sclerotial weight per colony was also reduced by propiconazole treatment but, in relation to total amount of mycelium, sclerotia formed earlier in 1 to 10 $\mu$g/ml plates than in control plates. Colony diameters from germinating sclerotia obtained from cultures growing at 0.5 to 10 $\mu$g/ml, were significantly greater than those of control colonies. Prolonged inhibitor activity resulted in increased branching, swollen or strongly tapered hyphal tips, formation of 'beaded' hyphae, and rupturing of hyphal walls when intrahyphal hyphae emerged. Abnormal fluorescent patches, representative of abnormal cell wall deposition, were …
A Survey Of Discrepancies Among Solo Parts Of Editions And Manuscripts Of Carl Maria Von Weber's Concerto No. 1 In F Minor, Op. 73., Ronnie Everett Wray
A Survey Of Discrepancies Among Solo Parts Of Editions And Manuscripts Of Carl Maria Von Weber's Concerto No. 1 In F Minor, Op. 73., Ronnie Everett Wray
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This monograph presents a study of the interpretation of Carl Maria von Weber's Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73 for clarinet and orchestra. Twelve published editions are examined and compared with the two extant manuscript copies from the Library of Congress and the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek. Because of Weber's apparent haste or carelessness in committing music to paper, and because of certain traditions in performance, a number of attempts have been made to edit this concerto. Given the large number of editions available to the clarinetist and the varied interpretations they present, it would be difficult to determine the …
The Clan Of Toil: Piney Woods Labor Relations In The Trans-Mississippi South, 1880-1920. (Volumes I-Iii)., John Reed Tarver
The Clan Of Toil: Piney Woods Labor Relations In The Trans-Mississippi South, 1880-1920. (Volumes I-Iii)., John Reed Tarver
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Lumber boomed in the Reconstructed South, an industrial binge that, by 1920, changed the landscape, first removing the forest then replacing its subsistence economy with consumerism. Men with money made fortunes in lumber. West of the Mississippi and south of the Missouri, it became a bonanza by 1880. Within these boundaries, black and white farmers and field hands sought "public work" in sawmills and log fronts. Most were unskilled. Steam power changed their lives, although all did not respond alike. They kept their folk ways, consistent with the new industry, despite their bondage to machines. Although most workers voluntarily entered …
Ultrafast Measurement Of Chemical Dynamics In The Condensed Phase Using Transient Vibrational Spectroscopy., Xiaobing Xu
Ultrafast Measurement Of Chemical Dynamics In The Condensed Phase Using Transient Vibrational Spectroscopy., Xiaobing Xu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Geminate recombination and vibrational energy relaxation of iodine in the condensed phase are investigated using picosecond transient Raman spectroscopy. The advantages of transient Raman in measuring vibrational energy relaxation and separating different reaction dynamics are demonstrated in this dissertation. Using transient Raman spectroscopy we have for the first time directly observed geminate recombination and vibrational energy relaxation of I$\sb2$ on both X and $A\sp\prime$ $\sp3\Pi\sb{2u}$ states. For the X state, energy relaxation from vibrational levels ranging from $\upsilon$ = 52 to $\upsilon$ = 1 have been observed. These levels correspond to absolute energies of 9,300 to 210 cm$\sp{-1}$ above the …
Structure Of Synthetic Oligosaccharides By Tandem Mass Spectrometry., Eunsun Yoo Yoon
Structure Of Synthetic Oligosaccharides By Tandem Mass Spectrometry., Eunsun Yoo Yoon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Certain linkage positions in oligosaccharides can be discerned by collision-activated dissociation mass spectrometry (MS-CID-MS), rationalized by molecular modeling. The first part of this dissertation shows that linkage-specific daughter ion spectra of synthetic amino-sugar containing oligosaccharides can be obtained from several alkylated derivatives such as sodiated, potassiated, ammoniated and lithiated derivatives. Methylated derivatives of the synthetic oligosaccharides give more useful linkage discernment product-ions, including a 3-linkage specific ion. A novel approach of relating daughter ion to parent ion ratios and collision energy is described and is predictive of linkage position in the first set of six oligosaccharides used. In the second …
Atoms And Di-Atoms In Intense Laser Fields., Muhammad Raza Saeed
Atoms And Di-Atoms In Intense Laser Fields., Muhammad Raza Saeed
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A series of experimental studies was carried out on diatomic molecules to understand how they interact with intense laser fields. These studies have mainly consisted of multiple photon excitation, ionization and dissociation of hydrogen, oxygen, and chlorine molecules using time of flight electron and ion spectroscopy. I took advantage of the similarities and differences in the molecular structure of these molecules in order to investigate whether different molecules interact differently with the applied fields. Clear experimental evidence of molecular Bond Softening as an intensity dependent variation in the vibrational distribution of molecular ions is being reported for the first time …
A New Construction Of Subgroups Inducing Isomorphic Representations., Patricia Wright Beaulieu
A New Construction Of Subgroups Inducing Isomorphic Representations., Patricia Wright Beaulieu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation provides a method to construct infinite families of triples ($H\sb{i},H\sbsp{i}{\prime},G\sb{i}$) consisting of two non-conjugate subgroups $H\sb{i}$ and $H\sbsp{i}{\prime}$ of a finite group $G\sb{i}$ whose trivial representations induce isomorphic representations of $G\sb{i}$. Such triples are important in number theory, differential geometry, and group theory.
Mechanism And Enhancement Of Phase Segregation In Drilling Fluids., John Marvin Griffin
Mechanism And Enhancement Of Phase Segregation In Drilling Fluids., John Marvin Griffin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Dewaterability of a compressible suspension can be characterized by two fundamental properties of viscoelastic networks: permeability and bulk modulus of elasticity. Time required for dewatering can be obtained from the former, while the latter can furnish the data required for predicting ultimate compaction. A method has been derived and an apparatus constructed for measurement of these two properties in a centrifugal field. The method was applied to a variety of drilling fluids and mineral suspensions. A floor-mounted laboratory centrifuge was used in this investigation. The methods developed have merit for evaluating pre-treatments prior to centrifugal dewatering. A method for quantifying …
From Image To Identity: The Search For Authenticity In The Early Modernist Drama Of Maxwell Anderson, John Millington Synge, Federico Garcia Lorca And D. H. Lawrence., Janice Maria Oliver
From Image To Identity: The Search For Authenticity In The Early Modernist Drama Of Maxwell Anderson, John Millington Synge, Federico Garcia Lorca And D. H. Lawrence., Janice Maria Oliver
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Working roughly from the last decades of the nineteenth century into the first quarter of the twentieth, early modernist playwrights wrote in times which were dominated by realism, but when many still looked to poetic forms for expression. They shared artistic space with realist practitioners like Ibsen and Shaw on the one hand and poetic dramatists like Yeats and Eliot on the other. Interested in dramatizing the conflict between the private and the public selves, they faced a central problem of creating a form and attendant style that could bridge the gap between the individual and her/his environment, thus harmonizing …
A Study Of Metacognitive Skill As Influenced By Expressive Writing In College Introductory Algebra Classes., Naomi Barbara R Allen
A Study Of Metacognitive Skill As Influenced By Expressive Writing In College Introductory Algebra Classes., Naomi Barbara R Allen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The quality of mathematics education has become a major concern to mathematics educators. As a result, increased attention is being given to identifying the abilities that underlie competent performance. An outcome of this effort is an increasing belief that the development of metacognitive skills is an essential component of proficient mathematics performance. Writing, because it promotes reflective thinking, is believed to be the vehicle for this development. Writing in the mathematics classroom has previously received anecdotal support for its benefits to the learner and to the instructor, and limited quantitative benefits in problem-solving ability toward mathematics. This study examined the …
Le Vase Clos Proustien., Fabrice Igor Leroy
Le Vase Clos Proustien., Fabrice Igor Leroy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Proust's main novel, A la recherche du temps perdu, has been analyzed by Gilles Deleuze as the story of an experience of learning, the narrator's account of his gradual understanding of signs. This means that Proust's novel can be read as a continuous act of semiotic and social interpretation, and Claude Duchet's hypothesis that the systems of objects in a novel comprise a discourse of their own--a semiotic network within the text--can be a point of departure in the study of such signs, precisely of the detail as a dynamic structure. Such examination of the narration of fictional objects/signs belongs …
An Investigation Of The Determinants Of The Municipal Decision To Privatize Residential Sanitation Collection., Richard C. Brooks
An Investigation Of The Determinants Of The Municipal Decision To Privatize Residential Sanitation Collection., Richard C. Brooks
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) Concepts Statement No. 1, Objectives of Financial Reporting states that (GASB 1987, 27) "Financial reporting should assist in fulfilling government's duty to be publicly accountable and should enable users to assess that accountability." Government accountability requires that public officials answer to the citizenry. Further, accountability rests on the notion that the citizenry has a "right to know" (GASB 1987, 21). Therefore, according to GASB Concepts Statement No. 1, municipal accounting data should reflect public resource allocation decisions made by government officials. This study investigates the usefulness of municipal accounting data for modeling a particular …
Timed Daily Thermopulses Alter The Circadian Hormonal Regulation Of Glucose And Lipid Metabolism., Christopher Joseph De Souza
Timed Daily Thermopulses Alter The Circadian Hormonal Regulation Of Glucose And Lipid Metabolism., Christopher Joseph De Souza
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies were made in Syrian hamsters and Holtzman rats to examine roles for circadian rhythms in the control of body fats stores. Baseline and circadian rhythms of plasma insulin varied seasonally in the Syrian hamster. Baseline concentrations of the hormone were almost 4 times greater in scotosensitive female hamsters held on short daily photoperiods when they were fat than in lean animals at other seasons and other photoperiodic schedules. Additionally, plasma insulin levels in fat hamsters, but not in lean animals, peaked at light onset when lipogenic responsiveness to insulin is greatest. The circadian rhythms of plasma insulin are not …

Partial Sequence And Characterization Of A Growth Hormone Gene Of The Red Drum (Sciaenops Ocellatus)., Carol Marie Dorworth
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A growth hormone (GH) gene was isolated from nuclear DNA of the red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus). Synthetic oligonucleotides were synthesized based on published cDNA sequences of other perciform fishes. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methodology was employed to amplify a nucleotide sequence extending from the 5$\sp\prime$ end of intron I to 15 bases upstream of the 3$\sp\prime$ end of exon VI of the GH gene. Amplified DNA was cloned into a phagemid sequencing vector. Clones were sequenced. Computer analysis of sequence data was used to determine the internal gene arrangement of exons and introns. Homologies of the nucleotide and deduced amino …
Ruminal Distribution And Utilization Of Zinc And Magnesium As Influenced By Dietary Source And Energy Level., Donald Wayne Kennedy
Ruminal Distribution And Utilization Of Zinc And Magnesium As Influenced By Dietary Source And Energy Level., Donald Wayne Kennedy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Steers fed a conventional diet were utilized to determine the effects of various Zn supplements on ruminal distribution of Zn. Treatments consisted of a basal (B) diet (no Zn supplementation) and B supplemented with equal parts of Zn from either a polysaccharide complex of Zn (PC-Zn) or zinc oxide (ZnO). Samples were fractionated into four fractions: a cell-free fraction, a particulate fraction and two microbial fractions. After PC-Zn or ZnO were dosed intraruminally, relative distribution of Zn from each Zn source within each fraction was evaluated up to 8 h postdosing. Cannulated growing lambs were used to study the effects …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Input Type And Output Modification In English As A Second Language., Doris M. V Macdonald
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Input Type And Output Modification In English As A Second Language., Doris M. V Macdonald
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Proposals regarding the beneficial effects of elements of modified interaction such as clarification requests and confirmation checks on SLA have been taken up by a number of researchers who have found evidence for their existence in discourse involving NNSs. These investigators have assumed that the presence of such interactional features are beneficial to language learning, yet there is little empirical evidence to support a causal relationship between the presence of these discourse features and change in the performance of the learner toward target-language forms. Furthermore, the potential benefits of modified interactions have not been evaluated against other classroom practices. This …
Ecology Of Wintering Redheads (Aythya Americana) On The Lower Laguna Madre, Texas., Christine Anne Mitchell
Ecology Of Wintering Redheads (Aythya Americana) On The Lower Laguna Madre, Texas., Christine Anne Mitchell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Data on behavior, distribution, and food and habitat requirements of wintering redhead ducks (Aythya americana) were collected during 2.5 winters on the lower Laguna Madre, Texas, between 1987 and 1989. Migrating redheads began arriving on the lower Laguna Madre with frontal passages in early October. They initially congregated in the central portion of the lagoon, and the majority remained there through the winter. As winter progressed, flocks dispersed to other parts of the Laguna Madre. Ninety-five percent of redhead flocks were above stands of monotypic shoalgrass (Halodule wrightii) vegetation, their primary food source. Redheads fed intermittently throughout the day; most …
Changing Eyes: American Culture And The Photographic Image, 1918-1941., Melissa A. Mceuen
Changing Eyes: American Culture And The Photographic Image, 1918-1941., Melissa A. Mceuen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From 1918 to 1941, fast-paced changes and far-reaching crises occurred in all realms of American life--social, economic, political, cultural, and intellectual. Evidence of the culture's preoccupations showed up not only in written, but also in visual sources. Photographs helped to reveal the values of American culture, and did so with increasing frequency as the photographic process was further improved. Each visual image bore the marks of its culture, yet none provided a completely objective look at reality. For every picture was the product of the personality standing behind the camera. This study examines both the lives and the photographs of …
Oxidative Chemical Transformations Of Sesquiterpene Lactones., Howard Gordon Pentes
Oxidative Chemical Transformations Of Sesquiterpene Lactones., Howard Gordon Pentes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Oxidative chemical transformations of sesquiterpene lactones have been carried out to determine the effect these changes have on the biological activities of these derivatives. Vacuum liquid chromatography was used extensively to isolate the sesquiterpene lactones used for these synthetic transformations. Costunolide and dehydrocostuslactone were isolated from Costus Resinoid (Saussurea lappa) and dihydroparthenolide was isolated from Ambrosia artemisiifolia. The enolate oxidations of sesquiterpene lactones with oxygen and (camphorylsulfonyl)oxaziridine have been investigate. Enolate oxidations of sesquiterpene lactones with oxygen generate low yields of both 11$\alpha$- and 11$\beta$-hydroxylactones. The yields of enolate oxidations with (camphorylsulfonyl)oxaziridine are much improved (over oxygen) and the reaction …
Acoustic Topology Of Infant Proto-Syllables., James Robert Piroli
Acoustic Topology Of Infant Proto-Syllables., James Robert Piroli
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A corpus of CV-like proto-syllables was obtained from the archival recordings of three first-born infants, which were made in conjunction with earlier research on the acoustic and interactive aspects of infant language acquisition. Tokens were limited to proto-syllables with perceptual evidence of stop-like or glide-like qualities and an identifiable vowel. Following A/D sampling, measures of developmental change were made including F1/F2 steady states, transition durations, CV durations, maximum F2 velocities, F2 onset, fundamental frequency, shimmer, time-to-peak amplitude velocity, and time-to-peak F2 velocity within the transition. Contrary to expectations, the orderliness of the infant protosyllables was remarkable with few acoustic events …

Acquiring Vocabulary In A Foreign Language: Some Effects Of The Nature Of Instruction On The Knowledge And Use Of Words., Louise Stowell-Ruzicka
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect that the nature of instruction of French vocabulary words has on student knowledge and use of the words on five different measures: a definition recognition test, a cloze plus word bank test, a comprehension of a text containing the words, a writing assignment designed to elicit free use of these words and a test of overall reading proficiency. Eighty-one high school students in the second year course of French constituted three treatment groups: (1) traditional instruction where students were required to learn a list of 12 words paired with their …
The Spectroscopy Of Neutral And Ionic Forms Of Triphenylformazan Derivatives., Elizabeth Wilhite
The Spectroscopy Of Neutral And Ionic Forms Of Triphenylformazan Derivatives., Elizabeth Wilhite
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The spectroscopic characteristics of neutral, protonated and deprotonated triphenylformazans were investigated by means of visible absorption and $\sp1$H NMR spectroscopies. Studies of the effect of solvents and substituents on the absorption spectra of the neutral and ionic formazans were conducted. CNDO/S calculations for a series of formazans were performed to assign the electronic transitions observed in the absorption spectra of triphenylformazan. The formazan system was found to be highly delocalized and not tautomeric as had been reported. The visible transition of the U (trans-syn) form of triphenylformazan was found to arise from orbitals localized on the formazan system. The near …
The In-Store Retail Experience: A C-E-V Approach To Consumer Shopping Activity., Barry James Babin
The In-Store Retail Experience: A C-E-V Approach To Consumer Shopping Activity., Barry James Babin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Environmental psychology has been increasingly applied to the study of consumer patronage behavior. This study adapts a model based largely on environmental psychology and tests it empirically in an attempt to explain several aspects of in-store consumer behavior. In doing so, it goes beyond previous applications of environmental psychology by considering the effect of several antecedents of consumer emotions and by considering the consequences of varying retail experiences in terms of the personal shopping value they convey to a consumer. Prior to testing the model, previous research is reviewed to develop the relationships comprising the model. Put simply, various consumer …
The Federal Writers' Project's Mirror To America: The Florida Reflection., Pamela G. Bordelon
The Federal Writers' Project's Mirror To America: The Florida Reflection., Pamela G. Bordelon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the 1930s, the federal writers of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) plowed fertile new ground in American cultural scholarship. The writers were for the most part not professionals but white collar workers who had been dramatically rescued from unemployment by this government relief project. Like other New Deal relief agencies, the Writers' Project had been created more to make work than to do work. But by the end of the program, it had charted a nation and documented American life more comprehensively than any earlier effort had done. In Florida the federal writers produced a state guide, pioneered African-American …
Toward A Phenomenology Of Curriculum: The Work Of Max Van Manen And T. Tetsuo Aoki., Robert Kent Brown
Toward A Phenomenology Of Curriculum: The Work Of Max Van Manen And T. Tetsuo Aoki., Robert Kent Brown
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this study an attempt was made at understanding contemporary thought and application of phenomenological research to the field of curriculum and instruction. More specifically, it sought to identify a place and need for a methodology in curriculum research that exposes and clarifies the dynamics of pedagogy as a result of investigating the existential/ontological nature of pedagogical activity. In accomplishing this, the works of two major North American phenomenological curriculum theorists, T. Tetsuo Aoki and Max van Manen were examined. The work of these two significant contemporary curriculum theorists was used due to the international recognition their seminal phenomenologically oriented …
