Spectra Of Mutations Induced By Tritium Beta Radiation Or 2-Chloroethyl Methanesulfonate In Drosophila Melanogaster Germ Cells., Nancy G. Fossett Jan 1993

Spectra Of Mutations Induced By Tritium Beta Radiation Or 2-Chloroethyl Methanesulfonate In Drosophila Melanogaster Germ Cells., Nancy G. Fossett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Tritium beta radiation (tritium) was used to induce mutations at the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) locus in male Drosophila melanogaster post-meiotic germ cells. All 23 mutations recovered were deletions greater than one kilobase in size (multikilobase deletions) as determined by genetic complementation analysis. A statistical difference was observed between the frequency of multikilobase deletions (23/23 or 1.0) induced by tritium and the frequency of multikilobase deletions (19/27 or 0.7) induced by 100-kVp X-radiation (X-rays). The relative frequency of multikilobase deletions induced by tritium with respect to that induced by X-rays was 1.4. This value was compared to the relative biological effectiveness …

An Examination Of The Role Of Collateral In The Loan Contracting Process., Gregory Kenneth Faulk Jan 1993

An Examination Of The Role Of Collateral In The Loan Contracting Process., Gregory Kenneth Faulk

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the competing roles advocated for collateral in a loan contract: solving problems of adverse selection, underinvestment, incentive contracting, bankruptcy and dilution of the monitoring services provided by banks. These theories cannot be separated based upon the effect of collateral on the borrowing firm's share price. Market based evaluations for security produce: (1) a positive response for small firms in an event study, but not confirmed with multiple regression; (2) a negative association for NASDAQ listed firms with regression, but not with event study methods; and (3) no response for NYSE/Amex firms with either method although they comprise …

Unifying Techniques In The "Anniversaries" Of Leonard Bernstein., Conwell Ray Harris Jr Jan 1993

Unifying Techniques In The "Anniversaries" Of Leonard Bernstein., Conwell Ray Harris Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During his career as a conductor, lecturer, pianist, and composer, Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) touched the lives of countless people. His musical output reached from symphonies to Broadway musicals, and from ballets to sacred choral works. Though most of Bernstein's compositions are large-scale works, he also composed a number of miniatures for solo piano entitled "Anniversaries." There are four sets: Seven Anniversaries (1944), Four Anniversaries (1945), Five Anniversaries (1964), and Thirteen Anniversaries (1989). Bernstein's musical style has been described as eclectic, but his use of unifying devices is a common thread found in many of his works in all genres. Most …

Romanticism Reconsidered: The Implications Of Organicism In Educational Reform., Anne Burford Griffin Jan 1993

Romanticism Reconsidered: The Implications Of Organicism In Educational Reform., Anne Burford Griffin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to reconsider what has historically been called "Romantic" in American education. What I discovered was the ubiquity of organicism--an organicism which, when applied to education, promises to heal divisions with connection and integration. A reading of Romanticism as organicism is a traditional interpretation which fails to acknowledge the revisionist work of critics like de Man, Hartman, Bloom, and McFarland, who regard the Romantic recognition of language and self-consciousness as providing alienation, not unity. However, education continues to regard the Romantics as organicists and to provide organic remedies, such as the organic reforms proposed in …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Copolycarbonates Derived From 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanediol., Carey Cecil Geiger Jan 1993

Synthesis And Characterization Of Copolycarbonates Derived From 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanediol., Carey Cecil Geiger

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Alternating copoly(bis-phenol-co-2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutane) carbonates are synthesized from 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanedichloro-formate and the corresponding bis-phenol using a solution polymerization technique. The bis-phenols consist of various 4,4$\sp\prime$-substituted diphenols including: 2,2-propane; 1,1-cyclohexane; 1,1-(4-t-butyl)cyclohexane; 2,2-tricyclo (3.3.1.1) decane; 2,2-bicyclo (3.2.1) heptane; 1,1-(1-phenyl)ethane; 2,2-hexafluoropropane; carbonyl; 9,9-fluorene; sulfide; sulfone; and diphenyl-methane. Crystal structures of the 9,9-tricyclo (3.3.1.1$\sp{3,7}$) decane and 1,1-(4-t-butyl)cyclohexane bis-phenols, previously unreported in the literature, confirm the structures proposed and reveal that the compounds are solvated with acetonitrile and toluene, respectively. The copolymers are isolated by precipitation in methanol; yields ranging from 50 to 80% are obtained. All monomers and polymers reported are characterized by $\sp1$H and $\sp{13}$C NMR …

Professional Competencies Needed By Extension Agents In The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service., William Blaine Reynolds

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to identify the professional competencies needed by the Cooperative Extension agents in Louisiana as perceived by extension agents. Additional purposes of the study were to identify when the respondents believed the identified competencies should be acquired and to describe the responding agents with regard to selected demographic variables. One-hundred forty-one professional competency items were included in a questionnaire that was divided into two parts. The competencies were divided into nine categories that were designed to measure participants' perceptions as to the importance of need for the competencies by extension agents. A five-point Likert-type scale …

Transcription Initiation Studies With Bacillus Subtilis Promoters Containing Curved Dna., Douglas James Stemke Jan 1993

Transcription Initiation Studies With Bacillus Subtilis Promoters Containing Curved Dna., Douglas James Stemke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Many promoters contain a curved DNA component essential for high levels of transcription activity. The present work approached the study of these unusual DNA structures in a twofold manner. First, promoter binding by RNA polymerase from Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli was examined using a collection of promoters containing DNA curvature. Promoter binding by both RNA polymerases was governed primarily by the nucleotide sequence at the highly conserved $-$10 and $-$35 regions of the promoters. However, the presence of curved DNA, immediately upstream of the $-$35 region of the promoter, predictably increased binding to those promoters which contained curved DNA …

African American Students' Perception Of Mandatory Participation In A Remedial Program At An Historically Black University In The South., Deborah Burson Smith Jan 1993

African American Students' Perception Of Mandatory Participation In A Remedial Program At An Historically Black University In The South., Deborah Burson Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Academically underprepared college bound students and remedial instruction at the collegiate level continue to be serious and recurring problems for postsecondary institutions throughout the United States. Although many institutions have attempted to address the academic needs of underprepared students by providing mandatory programs with varied approaches in reading, writing, and mathematics, educators, theorists, and scholars have given little attention to the effects of mandatory participation on students' perceptions of a remedial program or classroom. This research is designed to provide an inside view of the remedial classroom and underprepared African American students' interpretations of certain practices that may impact their …

A Policy Approach To Educational Leadership In The State Legislature., Sue Wells Weaver Jan 1993

A Policy Approach To Educational Leadership In The State Legislature., Sue Wells Weaver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated legislative expert influence in the context of educational policy decisions. Institutional and behavioral approaches to legislative study were compared. In a chi square analysis of all legislative education enrollments in the 1993 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature, legislation introduction success was positively associated with author's level of credential and reputation expertise. Relative importance of type of expertise was indeterminable and some influence was unaccountable in the analysis. The policy approach, based on Theodore Lowi's theory that policy predicts politics, integrated the prior approaches. Lowi's distributive-regulatory-redistributive schema informed the independent policy variables, while influence, role, and subsystem …

The Antecedents And Consequences Of Transformational Leadership., Andrew J. Meibaum Iii Jan 1993

The Antecedents And Consequences Of Transformational Leadership., Andrew J. Meibaum Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the relations among theoretical antecedents and consequences of transformational leadership style. Thirty hospital CEOs completed questionnaires measuring self-esteem, autonomy, need for achievement, dominance, and hospital strategy. In addition, 214 subordinates rated the leadership style of the 30 CEOs. The hypothesized links between CEO personality and transformational leadership style were not supported. Also, the hypothesized relation between transformational leadership style and organizational effectiveness was not supported. Supplemental analyses revealed a direct relation between CEO self-esteem and organizational effectiveness and between organizational strategy and organizational effectiveness. Specifically, CEO self-esteem was positively related to organizational effectiveness, and a domain-offensive …

Embedding Schemes For Interconnection Networks., David Aloys Hoelzeman Jan 1993

Embedding Schemes For Interconnection Networks., David Aloys Hoelzeman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Graph embeddings play an important role in interconnection network and VLSI design. Designing efficient embedding strategies for simulating one network by another and determining the number of layers required to build a VLSI chip are just two of the many areas in which graph embeddings are used. In the area of network simulation we develop efficient, small dilation embeddings of a butterfly network into a different size and/or type of butterfly network. The genus of a graph gives an indication of how many layers are required to build a circuit. We have determined the exact genus for the permutation network …

Hydrogeochemistry Of Saline Waters In Aquifers Of Tertiary And Younger Age In Northeastern Louisiana And Southeastern Arkansas., Glenn Fredrick Huff Jan 1993

Hydrogeochemistry Of Saline Waters In Aquifers Of Tertiary And Younger Age In Northeastern Louisiana And Southeastern Arkansas., Glenn Fredrick Huff

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Solute source tracing using Br/Cl and $\rm\sp{87}Sr/\sp{86}Sr$ ratios indicate that the source of brackish water in the Mississippi River alluvial and Jasper aquifers of Concordia Parish, Louisiana are brines and saline waters from the Wilcox aquifer. The proximity of maximum concentrations of dissolved solids to the location of plugged and abandoned oil wells and test holes indicates that brines and saline waters have migrated upward through these oil wells and test holes. Br/Cl ratios in the Wilcox aquifer suggest dissolution of halite as a major source of dissolved solids. Apparent thermodynamic equilibrium exists between plagioclase and kaolinite, plagioclase and Na-smectite, …

Signal Requirement For Memory Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes., Sudhirdas Kumar Prayaga Jan 1993

Signal Requirement For Memory Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes., Sudhirdas Kumar Prayaga

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Generation of an optimal immune response against a pathogen leads to protection from disease. Cytokines orchestrate a complex but well coordinated interaction between the cells of the immune system. Precise and sequential signals are required for the induction of a particular cellular function. In this study, I have analyzed the minimal signal requirement for memory cytotoxic T lymphocyte (mCTL) effector function. I have used human peripheral blood T cells as the source of influenza virus specific mCTL precursors, and influenza virus infected and formaldehyde fixed cells as antigen presenters in our assay system. Using this model, we have identified an …

The Congruence Extension Property, The Ideal Extension Property, And Ideal Semigroups., Karen Dommert Aucoin Jan 1993

The Congruence Extension Property, The Ideal Extension Property, And Ideal Semigroups., Karen Dommert Aucoin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A semigroup has the congruence extension property (CEP) provided that each congruence on each subsemigroup of S extends to a congruence on S. The ideal extension property (IEP) for semigroups is defined analogously. A characterization of commutative semigroups with IEP is given in terms of multiplicative conditions within and between the archimedean components of the semigroup. A similar characterization of commutative semigroups with CEP is sought. Toward this end, archimedean semigroups with CEP are characterized in terms of multiplicative structure and a number of necessary conditions on multiplication between the archimedean components of a commutative semigroup with CEP are established. …

A Study Of Deoxyribooligonucleotide Duplexes Containing An Unpaired Base Or Mismatched Base Pairs Using: (I) Molecular Modeling, And, (Ii) Proton Exchange Measured With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy., Bonnie Mary Gunn-Tolson Jan 1993

A Study Of Deoxyribooligonucleotide Duplexes Containing An Unpaired Base Or Mismatched Base Pairs Using: (I) Molecular Modeling, And, (Ii) Proton Exchange Measured With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy., Bonnie Mary Gunn-Tolson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mismatched base pairs have been implicated in mutations and arise from transitions or transversions of the base pairs during replication. An oligonucleotide duplex containing adjacent G$\cdot$A and A$\cdot$A mismatches, d(GCGAAT)$\cdot$d(ATAAGC), has been investigated using molecular mechanics and dynamics. Experimental NMR data obtained for a related molecule was used to constrain the model which suggested an unusual hydrogen-bonding for both mismatches. Between the G$\cdot$A and A$\cdot$A mismatches, defined by the unusual base pairing, there is a large twist angle. The remainder of the base pairs are B-DNA conformations. The effect of an unpaired base on the local geometry of an oligonucleotide …

Recognition And Production Of Facial Emotion By Autistic Children., Steven R. Love Jan 1993

Recognition And Production Of Facial Emotion By Autistic Children., Steven R. Love

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Autistic males ages 8 to 16 made significantly more errors than did chronologically and intellectually age-matched nonautistic normal and mentally retarded males on emotion recognition tasks using audiotaped and videotaped emotion sequences. The audiotape and videotape included "happy" "sad," "scared," "angry," and "no emotion" sequences. Emotional sequences included emotionally relevant verbal content and the length of verbalized material in the emotional sequences was limited to between 4 and 10 words. Videotaped sequences showed actors portraying facial expressions and verbal content consistent with the five emotion states. Both tapes were rated by normal adults and children as containing "socially valid" representations …

Contributions Of Monoclonal Antibodies With Anti-Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule Like Activity To Peripheral Nerve Regeneration., Laura G. Remsen Jan 1993

Contributions Of Monoclonal Antibodies With Anti-Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule Like Activity To Peripheral Nerve Regeneration., Laura G. Remsen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Tubes containing monoclonal antibodies with anti-neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM)-like activity were applied to transected sciatic nerves to attempt to perturb the recovery of muscle function. Physiological recordings were used to estimate the return of function. The decline of implanted antibody over 28 days was estimated. No significant immune responses were detected in response to the implanted material. Electron microscopic and immunohistological analyses evaluated particular cellular disruptions in nerves due to the presence of these antibodies with anti-N-CAM like activity. Histological sections of fixed experimental nerves consistently revealed abnormal gaps between Schwann cells of regenerating nerves. This specific Schwann cell …

Split Abelian Extensions Of Calgebras., Mark Andrew Curole Jan 1993

Split Abelian Extensions Of Calgebras., Mark Andrew Curole

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is shown that the C* algebra of a groupoid with Haar system has a natural split abelian extension. For a split abelian extension of a C* algebra it is shown that all representations of the original algebra extend to the split abelian extension. Under a reasonable assumption it is shown that states extend to a split abelian extension. Definitions for quasi-invariant and ergodic measures are given for split abelian extension of C* algebras, and it is shown when the split abelian extension is the natural extension of the C* algebra of a groupoid with Haar system that these definitions …

Teachers' Collective Bargaining: Its Occurrence And Impact On Wages, Employment, And Expenditures In States Without Collective Bargaining Legislation., Malcolm Michael Duplantis Jan 1993

Teachers' Collective Bargaining: Its Occurrence And Impact On Wages, Employment, And Expenditures In States Without Collective Bargaining Legislation., Malcolm Michael Duplantis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study analyzed the extent of teachers' unions activities in the eleven states without favorable collective bargaining legislation and the impact of collective bargaining agreements on teachers' wages, employment rates, and per-pupil expenditures. Specifically, school districts were examined in the six states which authorize, but do not require collective bargaining, and the five states which have no legislative provisions concerning collective bargaining for teachers. School districts were examined if student enrollment exceeded 10,000. A two-phased methodology was used to address the research questions. Phase 1 was a qualitative study which utilized data from a survey of school superintendents in selected …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study argues that in Ceremony Leslie Marmon Silko rehearses her Laguna-Keres culture and her culture's interactions with others. She accomplishes this rehearsal by employing representations of performances from the Laguna people as well as other cultures. To establish the context of my argument, first I offer a brief exploration of the current critical interest in Native American arts and cultures, review questions involved in defining the parameters for a study of Native American novels, examine the significance of Native novels for performance scholarship, and review performance studies scholars' responses to Native texts. Second, I review methodologies from a variety …

The Role Of Flagellar Proteins In Adhesion Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, And Isolation Of The Corresponding Gene(S)., Ratchanee Hongprayoon Jan 1993

The Role Of Flagellar Proteins In Adhesion Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, And Isolation Of The Corresponding Gene(S)., Ratchanee Hongprayoon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Polar flagellar core protein was purified from Vibrio parahaemolyticus by differential centrifugation and cesium chloride isopycnic centrifugation. Twelve hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies against flagellar core protein (MAb-flc) were obtained from fusions. By chance, one purified flagellar core preparation retained flagellar sheath and as a consequence, two hybridomas were detected which secreted anti-sheath antibodies (MAb-fls). MAb-flc and MAb-fls reacted specifically with their corresponding antigens as demonstrated by immunogold labelling. Coagglutination reagents prepared with MAb-flc and MAb-fls were tested against 34 strains of V. parahaemolyticus and 34 heterologous Vibrio species. The coagglutination results revealed that the flagellar core was species-specific while the …

Highly Resolved Studies Of Vacuum Ultraviolet Photoionization Dynamics., Sandeep Kakar Jan 1993

Highly Resolved Studies Of Vacuum Ultraviolet Photoionization Dynamics., Sandeep Kakar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We use measurements of dispersed fluorescence from electronically excited photoions to study fundamental aspects of intramolecular dynamics. Our experimental innovations make it possible to obtain highly resolved photoionization data that offer qualitative insights into molecular scattering. In particular, we obtain vibrationally resolved data to probe coupling between the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom by studying the distribution of vibrational energy among photoions. Vibrationally resolved branching ratios are measured over a broad spectral range of excitation energy and their non-Franck-Condon behavior is used as a tool to investigate two diverse aspects of shape resonant photoionization. First, vibrational branching ratios are …

Dynamic Properties Of Interacting Electrons., Lun Tan Jan 1993

Dynamic Properties Of Interacting Electrons., Lun Tan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The spectral weight functions and the optical conductivity of a highly correlated electronic system described by a simple Hubbard model are studied. The calculations are carried out for a small system, a cubic cluster of eight sites, by means of exact diagonalization using symmetrized basis functions. The spectral weight functions of a single hole (or electron) placed in an otherwise half-filled band are obtained. The density of states at different interaction strengths, ranging from weak to strong couplings, is studied. We observe the spreading of the spectral weight associated with some single-particle eigenstates over a large range of energies, and …
