An Analysis Of Medium Of Exchange In Takeovers., Yuan-Shing Liao
An Analysis Of Medium Of Exchange In Takeovers., Yuan-Shing Liao
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation provides a detailed analysis of the medium of exchange in corporate takeovers. Previous theoretical works and empirical evidence suggest three distinct (but not necessarily mutually exclusive) elements of information asymmetry: the bidder's value, the target's value, and the synergy from a takeover. Chapter two of this dissertation integrates the theory of financial intermediation into the research of the medium of exchange in takeovers. The research question is how the bidders with favorable information employ financial intermediaries, such as accounting firms, investment banks, and commercial banks, to reduce the market's unfavorable reaction to announcements of equity-financed takeovers. Chapter three …
Data Analysis Of The Allegro Gravitational Wave Detector., Evan Mauceli
Data Analysis Of The Allegro Gravitational Wave Detector., Evan Mauceli
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Allegro gravitational wave detector has been operational from 1991-1994, and 1996-present. We present a detailed description of the detector and the data acquisition system. Two distinct types of data analysis are detailed. First, we describe the search for burst sources of gravitational radiation. These are impulse forces acting on the bar, presumably from the stellar collapse associated with supernovae. Construction of the optimal filter for burst signals is described, as well as its application to the data from the detector. The uncertainties introduced into timing and signal strength estimates due to stationary noise are measured, giving the windows for …
Characterization Of Aminoalkylcarbamoyl Cellulosic And Chitosan Derivatives For Use In Cosmetic Formulation., Melissa Ann Manuszak Guerrini
Characterization Of Aminoalkylcarbamoyl Cellulosic And Chitosan Derivatives For Use In Cosmetic Formulation., Melissa Ann Manuszak Guerrini
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Polymer and surfactant interactions have been a subject of intense research due to industrial applications utilizing a polymer-surfactant system, such as cosmetic formulation. A series of aminoalkylcarbamoyl cellulose derivatives were prepared from the amidation of methylcarboxymethyl cellulose. These derivatives were quaternized with either iodomethane, or hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride, or epichlorohydrin and dimethylamine to yield polyquaternary ammonium salts. The focus of this dissertation is the characterization of a family of these compounds based on N,N$\sp\prime$,-dimethylethylene diamine. As these compounds are similar to Polyquaternium 10, a quaternized hydroxyethyl cellulose derivative, the solution properties have been characterized; antimicrobial activity and keratin affinity have …
Education, Faith And The Critique Of Reason., Mary Ellington Quinn
Education, Faith And The Critique Of Reason., Mary Ellington Quinn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The world situation, and life, in the contemporary West, since the rise of modernity, has been described most frequently as one of crisis, marked by a breakdown of life's intelligibility. It is the aftermath of the "death of God," the disappearance of humanity's relationship to a transcendent reality which historically has served as the center of meaning, effecting what has been called the world's disenchantment or the life-world's despiritualization, marked by a loss of soul. This process has involved a reduction of what constitutes the cosmos and human existence in it. In addition, reason, believed in as humanity's guiding principle, …
Diverse Roads To Literacy: Examining The Literacy Learning Of Six First Graders., Deborah Rickards
Diverse Roads To Literacy: Examining The Literacy Learning Of Six First Graders., Deborah Rickards
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this descriptive multiple-case qualitative study was to observe six students--three students who initially experienced difficulty with early literacy tasks and three who initially encountered success. It was conducted in a classroom with an exemplary teacher using literature-based instruction, the writing process, integration across curricular areas, and an intervention strategy designed to accelerate the learning of the students who encountered difficulties with literacy tasks. This research was conducted to examine the following questions: (a) How did each child interact with reading/writing materials and with other readers and writers within the classroom? (b) how did the teacher interact with …
The Recycling Potential Of Out-Of-Service Utility Poles For Engineered Wood Products., Han Roliadi
The Recycling Potential Of Out-Of-Service Utility Poles For Engineered Wood Products., Han Roliadi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study on the recycling potential of out-of-service poles for use in engineered wood products involved determination of basic properties of used southern pine (Pinus sp.) utility poles and also manufacture of glued-laminated beams from these poles. Most of the defect-free portions of 25-year treated poles still retained adequate strengths comparable to those of freshly treated poles and untreated southern pine. Creosote contents, however, diminished with pole ages. The reduction in creosote content was correlated with lower decay resistance, poorer dimensional stability, and lower lumber recovery, but better gluability. The spectrometry method for creosote content determination was explored as an …
Modeling Hrm In Context: Examining The Role Of Human Resource Manager Discretion., Elyssa Blanton Schultz
Modeling Hrm In Context: Examining The Role Of Human Resource Manager Discretion., Elyssa Blanton Schultz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation presents a model focusing on human resource manager discretion and its role in influencing variations in HRM. Discretion, defined here as the latitude of action of human resource managers, is suggested as an important means of accounting for differing levels of constraint facing the HRM function. Because the model developed here focuses on discretion as a characteristic which is common to theories of choice and environmental determinism in organizational research, it is designed to stimulate future research that simultaneously considers predictions of HRM structure and content that have, to this point, been considered contradictory. In general, the results …
A Comparison Of Leonard Bernstein's Incidental Music For The Film "On The Waterfront" And The Subsequent "Symphonic Suite" For The Film, And An Original Composition: Symphony No. 1: "Music For Theater"., Stephen John Lias
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The first portion of this dissertation compares Leonard Bernstein's incidental music to the film On the Waterfront with the subsequent concert suite that was derived from this score. By exploring the content of the film score, as well as the manner in which this music was adapted for the suite, some excellent insight can be gained into Bernstein's approach to both works, as well as the many requirements that the cinematic idiom places on the composer. Special attention is paid to the degree to which the dramatic content of the film influenced the construction of the incidental music. In the …
Complete Recycling Of Textile Components From Cotton/Polyester Blended Fabrics., Hyojung Kwon
Complete Recycling Of Textile Components From Cotton/Polyester Blended Fabrics., Hyojung Kwon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility of recycling textile components (especially cellulose) from cotton and polyester blended fabrics. The separation methods of intimately blended fibers developed were: (1) hydrolysis of polyester in NaOH solution or (2) dissolution of cotton in an N-methylmorpholine N-oxide monohydrate system. Complete separation was confirmed with thermal analytical methods such as differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis. These thermal methods were found to efficiently determine accurate fiber contents in cotton/polyester blends and in rayon/nylon 6,6 composite fibers. In the recycling process for cotton/polyester blends, a 4M NaOH solution at boiling …

An Identification Of Primary Evaluands As Perceived By Undergraduate Students And Faculty In A College Of Agriculture., Karen Renee Juneau
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study determined appropriate evaluands for a College of Agriculture based on the perceptions of two shareholder groups of the college, the faculty and undergraduate students. Student opinions about their college experiences appeared related to the goals and influences that prompted them to attend college. These goals and influences determined what they expected from their college experience. There were three parts to the study; a pilot study, an undergraduate student study and a faculty study. Undergraduate students were classified based on two break points, gender and nontraditional/traditional student status. There were four focus groups conducted for the study and fourteen …
Solid State Energy Barriers To Olefin Ligand Rotation Of Rhodium Compounds And Single Crystal X-Ray Structure Determination Of Synthetic And Natural Products., Yen-Hsiang Liu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) were derived from X-Ray diffraction data collected at two different temperatures (294K and 115K) from a single crystal of Rh(acac)(C$\rm\sb2H\sb4)\sb2.$ Since the thermal ellipsoids of atoms in the one crystallographically independent ethylene group displayed distinctive elongation normal to the C=C bond, a TLS rigid body analysis of the $\rm C\sb2H\sb4$ ligand rotation was undertaken. Using a locally modified version of Trueblood's THMA14 computer program, it was found that at 115K the root-mean-square amplitude of libration normal to the Rh-(CC centroid) axis is $7(4)\sp\circ,$ while at 294K it is $10(6)\sp\circ$ (estimated standard deviations in parentheses). The rotational …
The Radioresistance Of Deinococcus Radiodurans., Valerie Mattimore
The Radioresistance Of Deinococcus Radiodurans., Valerie Mattimore
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Deinococcus radiodurans is a remarkably ionizing radiation resistant bacterium. As a vegetative cell it is capable of withstanding 5,000 Gy ionizing radiation without evidence of death or mutation. D. radiodurans survives irradiation by repairing DNA damage via an extremely efficient DNA repair system. However, this DNA repair system has not been completely defined. In addition, the selective process allowing the evolution of high level radioresistance has remained a question. This dissertation bolsters the understanding of the DNA repair system of D. radiodurans by characterizing a collection of ionizing radiation sensitive (IRS) mutants. The level of radioresistance is quantified and transformation …
An Empirical Examination Of The Grant Induced Price And Income Effects Of Lump-Sum Intergovernmental Aid., Peter Michael Mitias
An Empirical Examination Of The Grant Induced Price And Income Effects Of Lump-Sum Intergovernmental Aid., Peter Michael Mitias
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work is concerned with the nature of fiscal illusion and its effect on local government spending. Fiscal illusion is hypothesized to be a source of the "flypaper effect." The flypaper effect is an empirical phenomenon of the asymmetric effects of income and intergovernmental aid on the level of local public spending in the context of demand models of the local fisc. Lump sum aid is observed to be more stimulative on the level of public expenditures than income (Gramlich and Galper 1973). As a method of explaining this phenomenon, tax-price and income illusion are incorporated into demand models of …
Etiology And Biological Control Of Seedling Disease In Water-Seeded Rice., Se-Chul Chun
Etiology And Biological Control Of Seedling Disease In Water-Seeded Rice., Se-Chul Chun
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In order to assess the potential of biological control of rice seedling disease, detailed etiological information was required, i.e. when and for how long are seedlings susceptible and which portions of the seed and seedling are susceptible. Contaminant-free seeds were required for these studies. For this purpose, rice seeds were soaked for 2 hrs in freshly prepared 2.6% sodium hypochlorite adjusted to pH 7.0 with a final concentration of 0.5 M potassium phosphate. This treatment was not only very effective in disinfesting seeds but also seemed to promote seedling growth. On the basis of this observation, a study was conducted …
Potential For Glufosinate As A Selective Herbicide For Red Rice Control In Bar-Transformed Rice., Sujatha Sankula
Potential For Glufosinate As A Selective Herbicide For Red Rice Control In Bar-Transformed Rice., Sujatha Sankula
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A three year study was conducted to evaluate the herbicide glufosinate on BAR-transformed rice and on the weed red rice. Preliminary evaluations with 1.1 and 2.2 kg/ha glufosinate on the BAR-transformed Gulfmont and Koshihikari rice varieties showed that both were resistant, but there was more injury to Koshihikari. Glufosinate at 2.2 kg ai/ha injured BAR-transformed Gulfmont rice more when applied to the 1- to 2-leaf stage (23-26%) than when applied to 3- to 4-leaf (13-19%) plants. The damage was least with boot stage applications (3-14%). Phytotoxicity to BAR-transformed Gulfmont rice was greater when 2.2 kg/ha glufosinate was combined with 0.4 …
Lex Scripta Et Lex Non Scripta: Tensions Between Law And Language In Late Fourteenth-Century England And Its Literature., Susanne Sara Thomas
Lex Scripta Et Lex Non Scripta: Tensions Between Law And Language In Late Fourteenth-Century England And Its Literature., Susanne Sara Thomas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work explores the connections between Middle English literature and transitions occurring within the English legal system. It focuses on the way Chaucer and the Gawain-poet negotiate the tension between the legal potency of the written word and the spoken word. As the common law contains an ongoing negotiation between written and unwritten forms of law, the dissertation discusses the function and significance of the tension between the lex scripta and the lex non scripta. It argues that the increasing displacement of oral and written language in the legal realm is a source of considerable cultural anxiety, and this anxiety …
An Integrated Model Predicting Smoking Stage Of Change Among A Sample Of Government-Insured And Indigent Medical Patients., Edwin Daniel Boudreaux
An Integrated Model Predicting Smoking Stage Of Change Among A Sample Of Government-Insured And Indigent Medical Patients., Edwin Daniel Boudreaux
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study found that an integrated model using variables from several psychosocial theories, including the theory of planned behavior, decisional balance theory, and self-efficacy theory, was successful in predicting smoking stage of change. Specifically, ever smokers with higher self-efficacy, higher ratings of the cons of smoking, and lower ratings of the pros were more ready to quit or had already quit. Additionally, those who rated smoking as less tempting and who reported having people in their support system who were supportive of their cessation were in later stages of change. These results point to the importance of assessing cognitions towards …

Cellulose-Reinforced Composites And Srim And Rtm Modeling., Mohammad Fahrurrozi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Structural reaction injection molding (SRIM) cellulosic/polyurethane composites were prepared from various forms of cellulosic mats, and elastomeric polyurea-urethane (PUU) and rigid polyurethane (PU) formulations. Mats (woven and non-woven) prepared from different sources of fibers with lignin content ranging from zero (cotton) to at least 10% (sugar cane and kenaf fibers) performed comparably in PUU/cellulosic composites. Young's modulus and tensile strength of PUU/cellulosic composites were doubled with 5% and 7% fiber loading respectively. Young's modulus and tensile strength of PU/cellulosic composites were improved by 300% and 30%, respectively, with 7% fiber loading, whereas their bending moduli and strengths were improved up …

The Redox State Of The [2fe-2s] Clusters In Soxr Protein Regulates Its Activity As A Transcription Factor, Huangen Ding, Elena Hidalgo, Bruce Demple

SoxR protein is a redox-responsive transcription factor that governs a regulon of oxidative stress and antibiotic resistance genes in Escherichia coli. Purified SoxR contains oxidized [2Fe-2S] clusters and stimulates in vitro transcription of its target gene soxS up to 100-fold. SoxR transcriptional activity, but not DNA binding, is completely dependent on the [2Fe-2S] clusters; apo-SoxR prepared in vitro binds the soxS promoter with unchanged affinity but does not have transcription activity. Thus, modulation of the SoxR [2Fe-2S] clusters was proposed to control the protein's function in transcription. Here, we provide evidence that SoxR with reduced [2Fe-2S] clusters is inactive. Redox …

We report performance measurements of a sub-millimeter resolution CdZnTe strip detector developed as a prototype for astronomical instruments operating with good efficiency in the 30-300 keV photon energy range. The prototype is a 1.4 mm thick, 64 × 64 contact stripe CdZnTe array of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions. Pulse height spectra were recorded in orthogonal-stripe coincidence mode which demonstrate room-temperature energy resolution < 10 keV (FWHM) for 122 keV photons with a peak-to-valley ratio > 5:1. Good response is also demonstrated at higher energies using a coplanar grid readout configuration. Spatial resolution capabilities finer than the stripe pitch are demonstrated. We present the image of a 133Ba source viewed through a …

Archae (formerly Archaebacteria) comprise an entire kingdom of organisms placed halfway between prokaryotes and eucaryotes in evolution, This class of organisms lacks murein cell wall and is devoid of organelles, yet Archae synthesize and export N-linked and O-linked glycoproteins utilizing only the plasma membrane. Study of glycosylation systems in Archae is extremely interesting because the plasma membrane must perform many functions normally carried out by the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi in eucaryotes. This report represents the first glycosyl transferase system enzyme demonstrated from archae showing a functional relationship with homologous eucaryotic enzymes. Archae dolichyl-phosphoryl-mannose synthase was purified 1070-fold from Thermoplasma …
Knot Theory And The Dynamics Of Quantum General Relativity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Knot Theory And The Dynamics Of Quantum General Relativity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We propose to interpret the action of the quantum Hamiltonian constraint of general relativity in the loop representation as a skein relation on the space of knots. Therefore, by considering knot polynomials that are compatible with that skein relation, one guarantees that all the quantum Einstein equations are solved. We give a particular example of such an invariant and discuss the consistency of the constraint algebra in this approach. © 1996 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Faculty Publications
We study the even-parity ℓ = 2 perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole to second order. The Einstein equations can be reduced to a single linear wave equation with a potential and a source term. The source term is quadratic in terms of the first-order perturbations. This provides a formalism to address the validity of many first-order calculations of interest in astrophysics. © 1996 IOP Publishing Ltd.

A procedure for applications of the pseudospin transformation within the framework of nuclear oscillator shell model is developed. It is valid for operators expressed in terms of single-particle variables and is based on permutation rules for special rotational invariants. The procedure is applied to a number of physical operators including several rotational scalars, the spin and orbital momenta, and the quadrupole moment. An algorithm for generating an approximation to the pseudospin transformation, which gives a simple and accurate expression for dominant parts of required transforms, is also given. The algebras associated with pseudospin transformations are discussed. © 1996 IOP Publishing …

In this paper, it is shown that, for a minor-closed class ℳ of matroids, the class of matroids in which every hyperplane is in ℳ is itself minor-closed and has, as its excluded minors, the matroids U1,1 ⊕ N such that N is an excluded minor for ℳ. This result is applied to the class of matroids of the title, and several alternative characterizations of the last class are given.

Hemoglobin A2 (HbA2; α2δ2) is a powerful inhibitor of HbS (α2β2/(S) polymerization. However, HbA2 levels are normally low in sickle cell patients. We show that a major reason for low δ-globin gene expression is the defective CACCC box at -90 in the δ-globin promoter. When the CACCC box defect in δ is corrected, expression of an HS2 δ/Luciferase reporter is equivalent to HS2 β/Luciferase. Erythroid Krupple-like factor (EKLF), which binds to the CACCC box of the β-globin gene and activates high-level expression, does not bind to the normal δ-globin promoter. Our goal is to design a modified EKLF that binds …
