Microstructure Evolution And Its Influence On Thermal Expansion And Tensile Properties Of The Superalloy In738lc At High Temperatures., Ercan Balikci Jan 1998

Microstructure Evolution And Its Influence On Thermal Expansion And Tensile Properties Of The Superalloy In738lc At High Temperatures., Ercan Balikci

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three major aspects of the superalloy IN738LC are studied in this dissertation: (i) precipitate microstructure evolution, (ii) tensile mechanical properties, and (iii) thermal expansion characteristics. IN738LC is a Ni-base, $\gamma\sp\prime$ Ni$\sb3$Al(Ti) precipitate-strengthened alloy. This alloy includes $\sim$20-43 volume % $\gamma\sp\prime$ and also some (Ta,Ti)C at the grain boundaries and in the matrix. Different heat treatments were carried out to study the precipitate evolution mechanisms and kinetics in this superalloy. It was found that the proper solution treatment producing the single-phase supersaturated solid solution condition is 1235$\sp\circ$C/4h/WQ. Solution treatment at 1200$\sp\circ$C/4h/WQ, however, produces a refined precipitate microstructure. Aging treatments after both …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Teachers' Orientations In Reading Process And Instruction: Four Case Studies., Carrice Lou Cummins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The beliefs that teachers hold about how children learn are often reflected in the instructional practices they use to help children become readers. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to identify teachers' beliefs regarding how reading takes place and how reading develops, (b) to examine the instructional reading practices implemented in teachers' classrooms, and (c) to explore the relationships between teachers' theoretical beliefs and their instructional practices in providing appropriate reading instruction. Qualitative methods informed this study by providing case studies of four primary grade teachers, giving detailed accounts of their theoretical beliefs--process and instruction. Two of the …

Supplemental Organic Chromium For Dairy Calves., Christopher L. Depew Jan 1998

Supplemental Organic Chromium For Dairy Calves., Christopher L. Depew

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Exp. 1, 42 calves were fed milk replacer and then starter either with or without 1 ppm supplemental chromium (Cr) as Cr-picolinate. Neither Cr nor sex affected growth performance. With the exception of plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentrations (NEFA), weekly plasma metabolites were not affected by Cr or sex. Pre- and postfeeding plasma NEFA concentrations were lower in Cr-fed calves, but were not affected by sex. AU calves seemed to become less insulin sensitive with age, as plasma glucose became lower and insulin higher as calves became older. During i.v. glucose tolerance tests (IVGTT), calves cleared glucose faster at …

Techniques For Resolving Incomplete Systems In K-Systems Analysis., Gary J. Asmus Jan 1998

Techniques For Resolving Incomplete Systems In K-Systems Analysis., Gary J. Asmus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

K-systems analysis is a generalization of reconstructability analysis (RA), where any general, complete multivariate system (g-system) can be transformed into an isomorphic, dimensionless system (a K-system) that has sufficient properties to be analyzed using probabilistic RA algorithms. In particular, a g-system consists of a set of states formed from a complete combination of the variables assigned specific values from a finite set of possible values and an associated system function value. The g-system must be complete in that all possible states must have an associated system function value. K-systems analysis has been applied to a variety of systems, but many …

An Analysis Of Factors Influencing The Teaching Of Biological Evolution In Louisiana Public Secondary Schools., Donald Wayne Aguillard Jan 1998

An Analysis Of Factors Influencing The Teaching Of Biological Evolution In Louisiana Public Secondary Schools., Donald Wayne Aguillard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Louisiana public school biology teachers were surveyed to investigate their attitudes toward biological evolution. A mixed method investigation was employed using a questionnaire and open-ended interviews. Results obtained from 64 percent of the sample receiving the questionnaire indicate that although teachers endorse the study of evolution as important, instructional time allocated to evolution is disproportionate with its status as a unifying concept of science. Two variables, number of college courses specifically devoted to evolution and number of semester credit hours in biology, produced a significant correlation with emphasis placed on evolution. The data suggest that teachers' knowledge base emerged as …

M1 Strength Distributions In Deformed Nuclei., Thomas Georg Beuschel Jan 1998

M1 Strength Distributions In Deformed Nuclei., Thomas Georg Beuschel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Elliott SU(3) Model, extended via pseudo-spin for heavy nuclei, is used to study low-lying magnetic dipole excitations in deformed nuclei which axe known as "scissors" modes. Proton and neutron degrees of freedom are handled explicitly and a system Hamiltonian that preserves SU(3) symmetry and one that includes single particle energies as well as quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing two-body interactions are considered. Starting from a basic nuclear Hamiltonian that preserves SU(3) symmetry, a microscopic interpretation of the "scissors" mode of the Two Rotor Model is realized through a linear mapping between invariants of the rotor group and SU(3). The model allows …

Evangelical Communication: Reference Group Membership Influence On Message Interpretation And Public Opinion., Mary Diane Hollems

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present dissertation was to examine the influence of reference group membership on message interpretation and whether one's interpretation then influences one's agreement with the message source and subsequent willingness to speak with the message source about the topic. In particular, this study looked at conservative Christian reference group membership and message interpretations about the topic of abortion. The independent variables of level of Christian fundamentalism, involvement in a Christian reference group, and socio-political conservatism were averaged to create a conservative fundamentalist composite score which was then used to split the sample at the median. Findings indicated …

Characterization And Analysis Of The Superabrasive Diamond Blade Sawing Process., Harlan Dwayne Jerro Jan 1998

Characterization And Analysis Of The Superabrasive Diamond Blade Sawing Process., Harlan Dwayne Jerro

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Diamond-impregnated segmented circular blade sawing is one of the most effective, versatile, and extensively used methods of processing rock and other hard materials, such as granite, marble, concrete and asphalt. For many years, it has been known that chip thickness is one of the most significant parameters in the understanding of the sawing process, and other variables such as force and power have been correlated with it. In this work, the material chipping geometries have been mathematically defined and derived through kinematics analysis. From these chipping geometries, chip area and thickness relations have been obtained. A relation for the mean …

Moth Diversity In Louisiana Longleaf Pine Savannas And Mixed Mesophytic Hardwood Forests: Species Composition And Management Effects., Deborah Landau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two habitats, a mixed hardwood forest and a longleaf pine savanna, were selected for analysis of moth composition. Three studies assessed differences between moth diversity, efficiency of sampling intensities, and effects of management practices in these habitats. The first study compared diversity and community composition between the two habitats based on 4,337 moths representing 394 species. The mixed hardwood habitat contained 314 species and the longleaf pine 208. Species overlap between two longleaf pine sites was as low as overlap between longleaf pine and mixed hardwood habitats (38%). Differences in moth richness between habitats may be a reflection of differences …

Perception-Action Coupling During Goal-Directed Locomotion Without Vision., Robert D. Clark Jan 1998

Perception-Action Coupling During Goal-Directed Locomotion Without Vision., Robert D. Clark

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ability to walk to distant targets accurately without the use of vision has been demonstrated in a number of studies (e.g., Elliott, 1987; 1990; Loomis, Da Silva, Philbeck, & Fukusima, 1996; Rieser, Ashmead, Talor, & Youngquist, 1990; Steenhuis & Goodale 1988; Thomson, 1983). Processes underlying the mechanisms involved in this ability however, are not completely understood. One possible mechanism examined involves non-visual sensory flows during locomotion. In Experiment 1, manipulations to normal walking led to significant increases in error relative to the control group. Error expressed as a percentage of target distance revealed that target distance did not affect …

Airbirds: Adaptative Strategies To The Aerial Lifestyle From A Life History Perspective., Manuel Marin-Aspillaga Jan 1998

Airbirds: Adaptative Strategies To The Aerial Lifestyle From A Life History Perspective., Manuel Marin-Aspillaga

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

"Airbirds" are defined as those birds that are adapted to almost constant life on the wing and do not perch, except for breeding and roosting. They use the air as the only medium in which to find and gather food. One taxon meets that definition: the swifts (Apodidae). Foraging zones of airbirds can be segregated in terms of clutch size, commuting foraging distance, nestling period, and nestling feeding rate. This study looked at foraging behavior and nestling diet, incubation patterns and mode of development in cypseloidine swifts, that as a group has extreme life history patterns. In a temperate one-egg …

The Effects Of Autocorrelation In The Estimation Of Process Capability Indices., Lawrence Lee Magee Jan 1998

The Effects Of Autocorrelation In The Estimation Of Process Capability Indices., Lawrence Lee Magee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The current popularity of the process capability index, a measure of a supplier's ability to meet the product specifications demanded by a customer, has become a matter of some controversy. While admitting the validity of much existing criticism, this research demonstrates that sample estimation of the triple index (Cpl, Cp, Cpu), a variant of the widely used index pair (Cp, Cpk), is equivalent to estimation of the natural parameters (mu, sigma) whenever the measured process characteristic X has an unconditional (marginal) normal probability density function. This includes processes which obey the strictly stationary, normal ARMA( p, q) model. By this …

Beta-Carotene And Exercise Performance: Effects On Race Performance, Oxidative Stress, And Maximal Oxygen Consumption., Kim Edward Leblanc Jan 1998

Beta-Carotene And Exercise Performance: Effects On Race Performance, Oxidative Stress, And Maximal Oxygen Consumption., Kim Edward Leblanc

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is evidence in the literature that suggests a possible worthwhile role of antioxidants during athletic endeavors and exercise performance. Several studies have evaluated the antioxidant ability of beta-carotene and demonstrated a beneficial influence. However, these studies have investigated beta-carotene's effects within an antioxidant mixture which included other antioxidant vitamins. Consequently, this study attempted to isolate the antioxidant role of beta-carotene during exercise. Three parameters of beta-carotene influence were measured using eleven well-trained runners: serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (a marker of free radical generation), 5000 meter race performance, and maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). Subjects were tested using a double-blinded cross-over …

Rhetoric And Social Struggle: In Search Of The Topoi Of Violence., Edward Christopher Reilly Jan 1998

Rhetoric And Social Struggle: In Search Of The Topoi Of Violence., Edward Christopher Reilly

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The rhetorical study of violence tends to examine violence within larger generic boundaries such as social movements studies or war rhetoric. In order to work toward a generalizable rhetorical theory of violence and discourse, this study examines texts which justify violence across generic boundaries. Accordingly, four case studies individually examine texts which justify political violence. This study compares and contrasts the rhetorical strategies of George Bush, the Unabomber, Earth First! and Abbie Hoffman. This study concludes that there are no universal strategies among the four case studies in the justification of violence. However, there appears to be a continuum of …
