Deconvolving The Information From An Imperfect Spherical Gravitational-Wave Antenna, S. M. Merkowitz, W. W. Johnson
Deconvolving The Information From An Imperfect Spherical Gravitational-Wave Antenna, S. M. Merkowitz, W. W. Johnson
Faculty Publications
We have studied the effects of imperfections in spherical gravitational-wave antenna on our ability to properly interpret the data it will produce. The results of a numerical simulation are reported that quantitatively describe the systematic errors resulting from imperfections in various components of the antenna. In addition, the results of measurements on a room-temperature prototype are presented that verify it is possible to accurately deconvolve the data in practice.
Extensions Of The Poisson Summation Formula, A. L. Durán, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Extensions Of The Poisson Summation Formula, A. L. Durán, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal
Faculty Publications
The classical Poisson summation formula (1.1) and the corresponding distributional formula (1.2) have found extensive applications in various scientific fields. However, they are not universally valid. For instance, if φ(x) is a smooth function, the left-hand side of (1.1) is generally divergent. Even when both sides of (1.1) converge absolutely, they may do so to different numbers. Indeed, in Example 3 we are faced with the embarrassing situation where the series on the left-hand side of (1.1) converges for Res1 while that on the right-hand side converges only for Res<0. Our aim is to extend formulas (1.1) and (1.2) with the help of some new results in distributional theory. For instance, the evaluation of the distribution with zero mean as given by (3.1) at a test function φ(x) yields the relation ∑∞-∞φ(k)-∫∞-∞φ(x)dx. Both the series and the integral in this expression are generally divergent. The concept of the Cesàro limit is then used to obtain the finite difference of these two terms. Thereafter we extend the analysis to higher dimensions. Various innovative examples are presented to illustrate these concepts. © 1998 Academic Press.

By the theory of Vassiliev invariants, the knowledge of a certain algebra B, defined as generated by graphs, is essentially as good as the knowledge of the space of Vassiliev invariants. We will prove that the subspace Bc2,uof B generated by all connected diagrams with 4+2uvertices, including u univalent ones, has dimension dimBc2,u=⌊(u2+12u)/48⌋+1 for u even. Marine diatoms require dissolved silicate to form an external shell. and their growth becomes Si-limited when the atomic ratio of silicate to dissolved inorganic nitrogen (SI:DIN) approaches 1:1, also known as the Redfield ratio. Fundamental changes in the diatom-to-zooplankton-to-higher trophic level food web should occur when this ratio falls below 1:1. and the proportion of diatoms in the phytoplankton community is reduced. We quantitatively substantiate these predictions by using a variety of data from the Mississippi River continental shelf, a system in which the SI:DIN loading ratio has declined from around 3:1 to 1:1 during this century because of land-use …

Measurement And Inheritance Of Resistance To Sheath Blight Caused By Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn In Rice., Xueyan Sha
Measurement And Inheritance Of Resistance To Sheath Blight Caused By Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn In Rice., Xueyan Sha
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sheath blight (ShB), caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn, has been the most destructive rice disease in Louisiana. To breed ShB resistant varieties, an effective procedure for screening progenies of segregating populations is required and detailed knowledge of the mode-of-inheritance of partial ShB resistance is also necessary. In this study four inoculation methods; rice hull/grain mixture (MIX), rice straw, toothpick, and brown rice, along with five assessment systems; 0-9 rating scale (RAT9), relative lesion height (RLH), disease severity (DS), disease incidence, and lesion height were compared on nine rice genotypes showing different resistance levels to ShB. Progenies of segregating populations from …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Infinite horizon singular optimal control problems with control taking values in a closed cone U in Rn lead to a dynamic programming equation of the form: maxF2x,v, v',v'' ,F1x,v,v' =0, forall x∈Q, where Q , the state space of the control problem, is some nonempty connected open subset of Rn , and F1, F2 are continuous real-valued functions on QxR2 and QxR3 respectively, with the coercivity assumption for F 2, that is, the function r&rarrr;F2x,u,p,r is nonincreasing on R . A major concern is to determine how smooth the value function v is across the free boundary of the problem. …

A Descriptive Assessment Model For Writing Programs: A Plan For Louisiana College., Linda Pettus Peevy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Aware of the proliferation of discussion, activity, and even legislation regarding assessment of educational programs; informed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) regarding institutional effectiveness; and realizing that assessment efforts are a valid means of revealing programmatic strengths and weaknesses and, therefore, of suggesting where change is needed, the Louisiana College English faculty began in 1991 to study how best to assess the effectiveness of its core requirement in English, a three-semester writing program. The project that forms the basis for this dissertation had its inception in that endeavor. This descriptive study, designed to assess the effects …

Numerical Modeling Of Multi-Species Transport In Soils Under Electric Fields., Wenbing Zheng
Numerical Modeling Of Multi-Species Transport In Soils Under Electric Fields., Wenbing Zheng
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A generalized mathematical model for electrokinetic soil processing is presented for multi-species transport of reactive components under electric fields in two-dimensional geometry, based on the earlier Acar-Alshawabkeh model. In this model, sets of partial differential equations are formulated for the transport of fluid, charge, and species in a saturated soil under coupled hydraulic, electrical, and chemical potentials. Chemical reactions pertaining to sorption, precipitation/dissolution, aqueous phase equilibria, water autoionization, and electrolysis are included in the new model. The boundary conditions corresponding to the mass transport equations are described. A program, EK-SIM (ElectroKinetic Soil Processing SIMulation), has been developed to simulate electrokinetic …

Development Of An Integrated Algal/Seed Clam Unit Using Recirculation, Computer-Control, And Fluidization Technologies., Timothy John Pfeiffer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Computer-control, recirculation, and fluidized-bed technologies were utilized in the integration of a land-based seed clam nursery system with an algae production system to improve northern quahog seed production (6-10 mm). The components of the integrated system included: a seawater treatment system; an algae production system; a seed clam nursery system; and a computer-control system. Treatment of the incoming seawater for the integrated system included filtration (20, 1, and 0.5 micron), chlorination, UV sterilization, and ozonation. During the summer months a chiller was used to maintain the treated seawater at approximately $\rm 20\sp\circ C.$ The diatom, Chaetoceros muelleri, was cultured in …
Promoting Self-Efficacy In Postsecondary At-Risk Readers: A View Of The Effects Of Using An Instructional Model Based On Cooperative, Active, Critical Thinking Unified Strategies (C*A*C*T*U*S)., Phyllis L. Simpson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nationwide, between one-third and one-half of all students who enter colleges and universities today are identified as needing some remediation. Many developmental freshmen do not have a realistic perception of their learning skills, their ability to activate their prior knowledge, nor a high degree of self-confidence in either their self-image or their inferencing ability to learn in today's college classroom. The review of the literature served as a basis for designing a cooperative, active, critical thinking unified strategy model (named by acronym C*A*C*T*U*S) for educating "at-risk" readers in developmental education. Furthermore, the literature review on self-efficacy and empowerment action-oriented teacher …

Ecology And Loss Assessment Of Selected Homopteran Pests On Sugarcane: Interactions With The Fire Ant, Solenopsis Wagneri Santschi., Andrew Evans Woolwine
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Field studies in 1995, 1996, and 1997, using insecticides to alter population densities of yellow sugarcane aphid, Sipha flava (Forbes), West Indian canefly, Saccharosydne saccharivora (Westwood) and the pink sugarcane mealybug, Saccharicoccus sacchari (Cockerell), indicated that sugarcane infested by these insects did not suffer sugar quality loss (as measured by brix, polarity, sucrose, purity, and theoretical recoverable sugar (TRS)). There was no apparent indication that Homoptera stressed sugarcane (indicated by concentrations of free amino acids in extracted sugarcane juice). A very slight, but significant increase in the percent brix was observed in sugarcane juice extracted from stalks washed free of …

Analysis Of Resistance Gene-Mediated Defense Responses In Arabidopsis Thaliana Plants Carrying A Mutation In Cpr5, Jens Boch, Michelle L. Verbsky, Tara L. Robertson, John C. Larkin, Barbara N. Kunkel
Faculty Publications
In resistant plants, pathogen attack often leads to rapid activation of defense responses that limit multiplication and spread of the pathogen. To investigate the signaling mechanisms underlying this process, we carried out a screen for mutants in the signaling pathway governing resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana to the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae. This involved screening for suppressor mutations that restored resistance to a susceptible line carrying a mutation in the RPS2 resistance gene. A mutant that conferred resistance by activating defense responses in the absence of pathogens was isolated. This mutant, which carries a mutation at the CPR5 locus and was …

Crystal Structure Of Apo-Glycine N-Methyltransferase (Gnmt), R. Pattanayek, M. E. Newcomer, C. Wagner
Faculty Publications
The crystal structure of the recombinant apo-form of glycine N- methyltransferase (GNMT) has been determined at 2.5 Å resolution. GNMT is a tetrameric enzyme (monomer M(r) = 32,423D(a), 292 amino acids) that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) to glycine with the formation of S-adenosylhomocysteine (AdoHcy) and sarcosine (N- methylglycine). GNMT is a regulatory enzyme, which is inhibited by 5- methyltetrahydrofolate pentaglutamate and believed to control the ratio of AdoMet to AdoHcy in tissues. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic space group P21212 (a = 85.39, b = 174.21, c = 44.71 Å) and contain one …

Effects Of Ammonium And Non-Ammonium Salt Additions On Methane Oxidation By Methylosinus Trichosporium Ob3b And Maine Forest Soils, G. M. King, S. Schnell
Faculty Publications
Additions of ammonium and non-ammonium salts inhibit atmospheric methane consumption by soil at salt concentrations that do not significantly affect the soil water potential. The response of soils to non-ammonium salts has previously raised questions about the mechanism of ammonium inhibition. Results presented here show that inhibition of methane consumption by non-ammonium salts can be explained in part by ion-exchange reactions: cations desorb ammonium, with the level of desorption varying as a function of both the cation and anion added; differential desorption results in differential inhibition levels. Differences in the extent of inhibition among ammonium salts can also be explained …
Carbon Monoxide Oxidation By Bacteria Associated With The Roots Of Freshwater Macrophytes, Jeremy J. Rich, G. M. King
Carbon Monoxide Oxidation By Bacteria Associated With The Roots Of Freshwater Macrophytes, Jeremy J. Rich, G. M. King
Faculty Publications
The potential rates and control of aerobic root-associated carbon monoxide (CO) consumption were assessed by using excised plant roots from five common freshwater macrophytes. Kinetic analyses indicated that the maximum potential uptake velocities for CO consumption ranged from 0.4 to 2.7 μmol of CO g (dry weight)-1 h-1 for the five species. The observed rates were comparable to previously reported rates of root-associated methane uptake. The apparent half-saturation constants for CO consumption ranged from 50 to 370 nM CO; these values are considerably lower than the values obtained for methane uptake. The CO consumption rates reached maximum values at temperatures …

Characterization Of Root-Associated Methanotrophs From Three Freshwater Macrophytes: Pontederia Cordata, Sparganium Eurycarpum, And Sagittaria Latifolia?, A. Calhoun, G. M. King
Faculty Publications
Root-associated methanotrophic bacteria were enriched from three common aquatic macrophytes: Pontederia cordata, Sparganium eurycarpum, and Sagittaria latifolia. At least seven distinct taxa belonging to groups I and II were identified and presumptively assigned to the genera Methylosinus, Methylocystis, Methylomonas, and Methylococcus. Four of these strains appeared to be novel on the basis of partial 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis. The root-methanotroph association did not appear to be highly specific, since multiple methanotrophs were isolated from each of the three plant species. Group II methanotrophs were isolated most frequently; though less common, group I isolates accounted for three of the seven …

Streptomyces soil rot is a destructive disease of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) that causes yield loss resulting from decay of the feeder root system and reduced quality due to the presence of necrotic lesions on the storage roots. It is managed by the use of resistant cultivars, but variability of the pathogen has not been previously assessed. This study compared 36 strains of the pathogen Streptomyces ipomoeae from different locations in the United States and Japan. The strains could be separated into three groups on the basis of their ability to inhibit the growth of one another in in vitro assays. …

Foraging Ecology Of The Philippine Flying Lemur (Cynocephalus Volans), E. William Wischusen, Milo E. Richmond
Faculty Publications
Between August 1986 and September 1987, six Philippine flying lemurs (Cynocephalus volans) were observed foraging on 35 of 76 available species of trees, representing ≥12 families of ≥26 available families. Eight species were foraged on in amounts significantly greater than expected, given the tree's abundance on the study area, and four were foraged on significantly less than expected. The foraging strategy of C. volans involved foraging many times during the night, for short duration, in several different species of tree each night. This strategy differed from that of other arboreal folivores.

Survival, egg production and egg viability of fleas allowed to feed on eight flea-allergic and six flea-naive cats were compared. Fifty fleas, in feeding cages or free roaming, were allowed to feed on the cats. Flea-allergic cats removed significantly more free-roaming fleas than did flea-naive cats. Female fleas produced fewer eggs on flea-allergic cats than on flea-naive cats regardless of feeding method. There was no significant difference in egg viability between the two groups. The data suggest that flea-allergic cats efficiently removed fleas by grooming and that they also produce unknown factor(s) that affect the fecundity of fleas.
