Synthesis Of Novel Amino Acids And 310- And Alpha-Helical Alpha, Alpha-Disubstituted Amino Acid Rich Antimicrobial Peptides, Thomas Scott Yokum
Synthesis Of Novel Amino Acids And 310- And Alpha-Helical Alpha, Alpha-Disubstituted Amino Acid Rich Antimicrobial Peptides, Thomas Scott Yokum
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Amphipathic peptides rich in α, α-disubstituted amino acids (ααAAs) were synthesized and examined for antimicrobial activity and helix preference in various solvent systems. Also, a series of polar, ααAAs were synthesized for incorporation into helical peptides and a red-shifted tryptophan analog was synthesized as a fluorescent probe.
A series of short, amphipathic, 310- and α-helical peptides containing 50 to 80 percent ααAAs was synthesized. Various combinations of 1-aminocyclohexane-lcarboxylic acid, α-aminoisobutyric acid, and 4-aminopiperidine-4-carboxylic acid were incorporated using preformed acid fluorides. In vitro testing revealed that most of these peptides show direct antibacterial activity against E. coli and …

Inelastic Yielding And Forebulge Shape Across A Modern Foreland Basin: North West Shelf Of Australia, Timor Sea, Juan M. Lorenzo, Geoffrey W. O'Brien, Jonathan Stewart, Kush Tandon
Faculty Publications
The Timor Trough is a modern `underfilled' foreland and basin created by partial subduction of the outer north west continental shelf of Australia beneath Timor Island in the Outer Banda Arc of eastern Indonesia during the Cenozoic. A change of the effective elastic thickness (EET) of the continental foreland lithosphere from approximately 80±20 km to approximately 25 km over a distance of approximately 300 km explains (1) the high curvature (approximately 10-7 m-1) on the outer Trough wall, (2) the low shelf forebulge (approximately 200 m) as measured along a reference base Pliocene unconformity, and (3) observed gravity. An inelastically …
Join In The Dance: Didacticism In Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice, Lisa Morales
Join In The Dance: Didacticism In Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice, Lisa Morales
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The importance of didacticism in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice may sometimes be overlooked in an effort to be entertained by the fairy-tale essence of her work. This is unfortunate since Pride and Prejudice offers a rich critique of eighteenth-century English society, as well as heralds the beginning of a new form of novel writing. This new form of novel writing includes a vision of an autonomous heroine who exercises freedom from patriarchal society and the “marriage market.” Austen’s ironic didacticism in Pride and Prejudice highlights hypocrisy and contradiction, and in so doing, mock social expectations. It is through her …

A Spin Network Generalization Of The Jones Polynomial And Vassiliev Invariants, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin
A Spin Network Generalization Of The Jones Polynomial And Vassiliev Invariants, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We apply the ideas of Alvarez and Labastida to the invariant of spin networks defined by Witten and Martin based on Chern-Simons theory. We show that it is possible to define ambient invariants of spin networks that (for the case of SU(2)) can be considered as extensions to spin networks of the Jones polynomial. Expansions of the coefficients of the polynomial yield primitive Vassiliev invariants. The resulting invariants are candidates for solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equations in the spin network representation of quantum gravity.© 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Mortality And Optimal Body Mass Index In A Sample Of The Us Population, Ramón A. Durazo-Arvizu, Daniel L. Mcgee, Richard S. Cooper, Youlian Liao, Amy Luke
Mortality And Optimal Body Mass Index In A Sample Of The Us Population, Ramón A. Durazo-Arvizu, Daniel L. Mcgee, Richard S. Cooper, Youlian Liao, Amy Luke
Faculty Publications
In this paper, the authors model the nonmonotonic relation between body mass index (BMI) (weight (kg)/height2 (m2)) and mortality in 13,242 black and white participants in the NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study in order to estimate the BMI at which minimum mortality occurs. The BMI of minimum mortality was 27.1 for black men (95% confidence interval (CI) 24.8-29.4), 26.8 for black women (95% CI 24.7-28.9) 24.8 for white men (95% CI 23.8- 25.9), and 24.3 for white women (95% CI 23.3-25.4). Each confidence interval included the group average. Analyses conducted by smoking status and after exclusion of persons with baseline …
