Impact Of Shrimp Imports On The United States' Southeastern Shrimp Processing Industry And Processed Shrimp Market., Hamady Diop Jan 1999

Impact Of Shrimp Imports On The United States' Southeastern Shrimp Processing Industry And Processed Shrimp Market., Hamady Diop

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The shrimp harvesting sector is the largest component of the southeastern United States fishing industry, accounting for 57% of the total value of landings in the region in 1996. U.S. shrimp imports were valued at $2.6 billion in 1996. Together, domestic production and imports of the raw product support a large shrimp processing sector, which provides several thousand jobs either directly or indirectly. In 1975 and 1984, the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) investigated the industry to determine whether the volume of shrimp imports was high enough to threaten domestic firms which were producing articles similar to, or directly …

Volumes Three And Four Of Jozsef Soproni's "Note Pages": A Stylistic Study., Maria Horvath Jan 1999

Volumes Three And Four Of Jozsef Soproni's "Note Pages": A Stylistic Study., Maria Horvath

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Jozsef Soproni, born in Hungary in 1930, composed in virtually every genre of musical composition: symphonies, other orchestral pieces, concertos, an opera, masses, cantatas, other choral pieces, songs, string quartets, sonatas, plus other chamber and instrumental pieces. His interest in solo piano music is realized in a number of compositions written before 1979 and his twelve piano sonatas written between 1996 and the first quarter of 1999. There is no comprehensive study of Soproni's music for piano; indeed all that has been published about it are brief analyses of various pieces, biographical sketches in books, and two articles in a …

Effects Of Substituent Substitution On A Bimetallic Hydroformylation Catalyst Based On A Tetraphosphine Ligand., Donna Kae Howell Jan 1999

Effects Of Substituent Substitution On A Bimetallic Hydroformylation Catalyst Based On A Tetraphosphine Ligand., Donna Kae Howell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main concentration of this work was to further study the unusual catalytic activity and selectivity of the bimetallic hydroformylation catalyst based on the tetraphosphine ligand, et,ph-P4. This activity and selectivity are a product of both the rigid steric environment and the cooperativity between the two Rh metal centers. This project focused on probing both the mechanism employed by this system, and studying the effect of manipulation on the steric environment at the binding site. In situ spectroscopic methods have led to the formulation of a dicationic catalytic system. This is highly unusual in that all monometallic rhodium or cobalt …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications Of Chiral Polymeric Surfactants In Micellar Capillary Electrophoresis., Crystal Williams Harrell Jan 1999

Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications Of Chiral Polymeric Surfactants In Micellar Capillary Electrophoresis., Crystal Williams Harrell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Chirality is a characteristic of many synthetic and biological organic compounds. This property is particularly true in the pharmaceutical industry where a large number of drugs are marketed as racemates. One method used to monitor optical purity is capillary electrophoresis (CE). Chiral separation using CE is achieved by use of an immobilized chiral phase or through a chiral selector mobile phase additive. It is demonstrated and determined that chiral polymeric surfactants are more suitable for chiral separation in electrokinetic capillary chromatography (EKC) than conventional micelles. Polymeric surfactants eliminate the dynamic equilibrium that occurs in normal micelles, are more stable, rigid, …

Apples And Regional Change: Life And Economy In Tsugaru, Japan., Ann D. Brucklacher Jan 1999

Apples And Regional Change: Life And Economy In Tsugaru, Japan., Ann D. Brucklacher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, I examine aspects of Japan's rural and agricultural restructuring using Aomori Prefecture's apple industry as a focal point. Though using multiple spatial scales, I concentrate most on changes in agriculture and economy in the Tsugaru region, Aomori's main apple-growing region. A historical overview of Tsugaru and its apple industry provides the background necessary for understanding today's circumstances. Archival and ethnographic methods examine modern-day changes and document the views of individual farmers and their families. Located at the northwestern-most tip of Japan's main island, the Tsugaru region was historically one of Japan's most remote and impoverished regions. The …

Magnetism Of Magnets: The Impact Of High School Magnet Programs On Desegregation And School Improvement In East Baton Rouge Parish., Alonzo Ray Luce Jan 1999

Magnetism Of Magnets: The Impact Of High School Magnet Programs On Desegregation And School Improvement In East Baton Rouge Parish., Alonzo Ray Luce

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The movement of school desegregation plans from mandatory means to voluntary means has led to a fierce debate. The school desegregation problem is encapsulated by two competing strategies: making a plan that enforces racial balance, and making a plan that stops white flight. The purpose of this study was to describe how high schools in East Baton Rouge Parish implemented court approved magnet programs, and to examine the results brought about at each of the high schools in terms of desegregation and school improvement. The study was designed to answer the following research questions: (1) How have high schools in …

Incomplete Acquisitions: The Valuation And Performance Effects Of Changes In Control., Karyn Lynn Neuhauser Jan 1999

Incomplete Acquisitions: The Valuation And Performance Effects Of Changes In Control., Karyn Lynn Neuhauser

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation provides an extensive examination of a corporate control transaction that has not been previously examined in the finance literature, an incomplete acquisition. An incomplete acquisition is defined as an offer for a sufficient amount of equity in a target firm to give the bidder effective control that is not accompanied by a disclosed intention to acquire the remaining minority shares. An original database of incomplete acquisitions is developed and used to examine three major aspects of these unique control transactions. First, descriptive data about the prevalence of incomplete acquisitions and the mechanisms that are used to effect these …

Quaternary Benthic Foraminiferal Distribution In The Ross Sea, Antarctica, And Its Relationship To Oceanography., Pamela Jo Perry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focuses on Quaternary benthic foraminiferal distribution in the Ross Sea, and its relationship to oceanography and ice-shelf retreat. It is the first study of benthic foraminiferal distribution that takes the retreat history of the Ross Ice Shelf into account. This is also the first time foraminifera from a cold-water carbonate bank have been described. There are three foraminiferal faunas in the Ross Sea: Pleistocene carbonate-bank fauna, Modern-calcareous fauna, and Holocene agglutinated fauna. Numerically significant species in the carbonate-bank and Modern-calcareous faunas include Angulogerina earlandi, Cibicides lobatulus, Discorbis vilardeboana, Ehrenbergina glabra, Epistominella exigua, and Globocassidulina crassa . The carbonate-bank …

"Playboy"'S First Year: A Rhetorical Construction Of Masculine Sexuality., David John Lambkin Jan 1999

"Playboy"'S First Year: A Rhetorical Construction Of Masculine Sexuality., David John Lambkin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The problem addressed by this study was twofold: what rhetorical strategies does a pornographic text actually employ? and what impact does that message have on its mate readers' sexual ideology? The first year's issues of Playboy comprise the specific text to be analyzed because Playboy is still the most popular men's magazine in the world and because various critics indicated that it was the prototype for current pornographic texts. Furthermore, this pornographic text has always been a public artifact as opposed to the surreptitious or illegal forms of pornography, which made it an apt choice for a rhetorical study. Three …

Rhetoric And Institutional Environments: The Legitimation Of Higher Education In Twentieth Century America., Thomas J. St. Antoine Jan 1999

Rhetoric And Institutional Environments: The Legitimation Of Higher Education In Twentieth Century America., Thomas J. St. Antoine

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation seeks to discover and analyze the divergent ways that higher education has been legitimated by American discourse in the twentieth century. Institutions of higher learning have been able to survive and flourish because they have been seen as essential to the health of a democracy, of a free-market economy, and of religious institutions. However, the explanations for such legitimacy have been diverse and varied. Bormann's fantasy theme analysis can account for the values and beliefs that form the institutional environments shaping and legitimating organizations such as colleges and universities. Fantasy themes expressed in popular discourse are expressions of …

Measurement Of Inclusive Charm Production In Two -Photon Collisions At Lep., Alan L. Stone Jr Jan 1999

Measurement Of Inclusive Charm Production In Two -Photon Collisions At Lep., Alan L. Stone Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The cross section of inclusive charm production in two-photon collisions se+e-→e +e-cc&d1;X is measured at the Large Electron Positron (LEP) collider at the European Center for Nuclear and Particle Physics (CERN). The data was obtained with the L3 detector at the center-of-mass energy of 91 GeV (LEP1) and for the first time at the center-of-mass energies from 130--183 GeV (LEP2). Charmed hadrons are identified by electrons and muons from semileptonic decays. The measured cross section agrees with next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. The direct process gg→cc&d1; is found to be insufficient to describe the data. The measured cross section values …

Musing The Garden: A Poetics Of Place And Emplacement., Scott Parker Smiley Jan 1999

Musing The Garden: A Poetics Of Place And Emplacement., Scott Parker Smiley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A walk through a garden is an immersion into a wealth of sensory and relational experiences of place. Plant varieties, color, texture, flowers, forms, pathways, light, benches, ornaments, and other experiential qualities of place work upon one's consciousness to draw one into intimate contact with the place "Emplacement" is this intimate, immersed engagement with a place, a process and state of being that erodes the boundaries we so often erect between self and environment. Traditional systematic forms of inquiry, based upon the Cartesian idea of an essential separation between object and subject, are not applicable to the study of emplacement …

Religious Art: Reflectors Of Change In The Catholic Church In New Mexico, 1830--1910., Shirley Jean Sands Jan 1999

Religious Art: Reflectors Of Change In The Catholic Church In New Mexico, 1830--1910., Shirley Jean Sands

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1846, the United States of America began a war with the Republic of Mexico. When it was over, one of the results was the acquisition of much of current California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, southern Colorado and New Mexico. The region was occupied by Catholic Mexicans, a fact not lost on the American Catholic hierarchy. The result is the sending of a new religious administration and the founding of what would become the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The clergy sent were French with French notions of civilization, culture, and proper Catholic theology. These views and notions were contrary to those …

Petroleum Reservoir Simulation Using 3-D Finite Element Method With Parallel Implementation., Husam M. Yaghi Jan 1999

Petroleum Reservoir Simulation Using 3-D Finite Element Method With Parallel Implementation., Husam M. Yaghi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Modeling fluid flow around wellbores with conventional reservoir simulators is inaccurate because radial flow occurs in the vicinity of the wellbore and these simulators use cartesian coordinates. In this research, we present a more accurate wellbore simulation by incorporating the finite element method (FEM) to simulate the radial flow in the vicinity of the wellbore and interfacing this finite element wellbore model with an existing finite difference method (FDM) reservoir simulator. Although this technique was developed for a vertical well, it could also be used to accurately model a horizontal wellbore. This "hybrid" solution is for three dimensional---triphasic fluid flow …

A Novel Approach To Dna Sequencing Employing Near -Ir Fluorescence Detection Coupled With Microscale Reaction Vessels With Capillary Gel Separations., Daryl Clifford Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Electropherograms of oligonucleotides labeled with near-IR fluorescent dyes, separated by capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) and detected using an ultrasensitive near-IR fluorescence detection system will be presented. A Universal M13 sequencing primer was labeled on the 5' end with a near-IR dye containing an isothiocyanate functional group. Comparison of the on-column detection limits in capillary gel electrophoresis for the near-IR-labeled sequencing primer to that of a visible fluorescein-labeled primer indicated improved sensitivity for the near-IR case. The detection limit was found to be 3.4 x 10-20 moles (SNR = 3) for the near-IR-labeled primer while the on-column detection limit for the …

Heinrich Herzogenberg was born into nobility in Graz, Austria, on June 10, 1843. He began studying music at the University of Vienna in 1862, and at the home of one of his teachers, Herzogenberg was often in the company of Brahms. In the years that followed, Herzogenberg and his wife Elisabet became close friends of Brahms and actively promoted his music. Through this close association with Brahms, Herzogenberg's compositional style was greatly influenced. Herzogenberg studied harmony and counterpoint with Simon Sechter, and in 1875, along with others, founded the Leipzig Bachverein (Leipzig Bach Society). This association with the Bach Society …

Risk Management Of Aflatoxin Through Mutagenic Potential Modification And Toxin Formation By Intrinsic Components In Food., Syed Shahid Ali Jan 1999

Risk Management Of Aflatoxin Through Mutagenic Potential Modification And Toxin Formation By Intrinsic Components In Food., Syed Shahid Ali

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aflatoxins are the secondary metabolites of Aspergillus flavus and their presence in food and feed crops is unavoidable. This study evaluates the antimutagenic properties of phytic and linoleic acids in aflatoxin-affected food. A reduction in the number of revertants was a function of an increased concentration of phytic/linoleic acids and phosphotidylinositol in the Salmonella/microsomal mutagenicity assay (tester strains TA-100 and TA-98) with and without metabolic activation (S-9). Linoleic acid (10 and 100 mug/plate) and phosphotidylinositol (25mug/plate) were antimutagenic against most of the mutagens tested. Although a reduction in the number of revertants was observed in the phytic acid treatments, the …

Comprehensive Income And Its Relation To Firm Value And Transitory Earnings., Carol Callaway Dee Jan 1999

Comprehensive Income And Its Relation To Firm Value And Transitory Earnings., Carol Callaway Dee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The distinction between permanent and transitory earnings is important when using accounting earnings to predict future dividends. To the extent that net income includes transitory items, it is less useful in predicting future dividends, and thus, less useful in valuing the firm. If comprehensive income includes more transitory items than net income, it is less useful than net income in valuing the firm. This study contributes to the literature in two ways. First, a definition of permanent earnings is developed that is based on the relation between earnings and expected future dividends. The study illustrates the relation between permanent, transitory, …

Phylogeography Of Two Loligo Squid (Cephalopoda: Myopsida) In The Gulf Of Mexico And The Northwestern Atlantic Ocean., Scott William Herke Jan 1999

Phylogeography Of Two Loligo Squid (Cephalopoda: Myopsida) In The Gulf Of Mexico And The Northwestern Atlantic Ocean., Scott William Herke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Based on restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) in mitochondrial DNA, the population structures of two species of Loligo squid were analyzed in the context of the classic Gulf of Mexico-Atlantic Ocean phylogeographic pattern. A 709-bp fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase (subunit I) gene was amplified by PCR from 356 L. pealei and 431 L. plei. Between latitudes 25°N and 43°N, each species had three common (>5% frequency) haplotypes and many rare haplotypes. Sequence data from all haplotypes indicated that nucleotide divergence between the two species ranged from 13.7 to 15.0% (transition-transversion ratio of ∼1.5; two inferred amino acid …

Increased Nutritional Value And Oxidative Stability Of Restructured Beef Roasts With Purified Extracts From Rice Bran., Joo-Shin Kim Jan 1999

Increased Nutritional Value And Oxidative Stability Of Restructured Beef Roasts With Purified Extracts From Rice Bran., Joo-Shin Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of semi-purified extracts of rice bran were studied in restructured beef roasts to increase nutritional value and oxidative stability. Crude rice bran oil at 0, 1, and 2% (w/w) was added to restructured beef roasts that were stored at 4°C and analyzed at 0, 7, and 14 d. Saturated fatty acid to unsaturated fatty acid (SFA/UFA) ratio decreased, vitamin E vitamers increased (p < 0.05), and cholesterol decreased in the beef roasts with rice bran oil. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) numbers were lower (p < 0.05) in the beef roasts with rice bran oil after 7 days of storage and the cholesterol oxidation product, 7-ketocholesterol, decreased in a similar manner. The addition of 2% rice bran oil (RBO) was effective in increasing nutritional value and reducing the level of oxidative degradation. Beef roasts containing either rice fiber (RF) or RF/RBO had higher oxidative stability (p < 0.05) during storage (0, 4, and 8 d) compared to control roasts, with no additive. TBARs value and 7-ketocholesterol of beef roasts with RF and RF/RBO were lower (p < 0.05) than those of the control during storage. SFA/UFA ratio was significantly reduced in beef roasts with additives, whereas vitamin E vitamers and UFA were higher (p < 0.05) in the roasts with RF/RBO. Beef roasts containing RF and RBO were acceptable to consumers in sensory attributes. Cholesterol autoxidation was examined in an aqueous meat model system with different levels of nonsaponifiable fraction from rice bran (0, 700, 1400, and 2100 ppm). The effect of nonsaponifiable fraction was determined at 4 h intervals for 16 h at pH 5.5 and 80°C. Increased oxidation time reduced (p < 0.05) total vitamin E vitamers and cholesterol concentration. Oryzanol was not significantly reduced with the 2100 ppm treatment after 4 h cholesterol oxidation. An increase in the nonsaponifiable fraction resulted in a decrease (p < 0.05) in the formation of 7-ketocholesterol. The highest level of additive (2100 ppm) was the most effective in inhibiting cholesterol autoxidation; the order of inhibition was 91.7% (2100 ppm) > 81.8% (1400 ppm) > 63.1% (700 ppm).

Performing Dracula: A Critical Examination Of A Popular Text In Three Sites Of Performance., Jonathan Matthew Gray Jan 1999

Performing Dracula: A Critical Examination Of A Popular Text In Three Sites Of Performance., Jonathan Matthew Gray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dracula is a significant example of a popular phenomenon with a long and ongoing history of productive circulation in Anglo-American culture. While theorists of popular culture often use the term "performance" in their explanations of the popularity and meaningful operations of such phenomena in a culture, they do not always provide concrete definitions of what they mean by performance. This study provides an analysis of the roles performance plays in a specific popular culture phenomenon. Identifying Bram Stoker's Dracula as a nexus for a broader cultural activity, this study examines articulations of Dracula in performances and texts that both precede …

Folk Housing In Northeastern Mexico: A Key To Culturogeographic Regionalization., Scott Stuart Brown Jan 1999

Folk Housing In Northeastern Mexico: A Key To Culturogeographic Regionalization., Scott Stuart Brown

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Folk housing is one of the elements of material culture which geographers often employ in understanding the cultural aspects of regional studies. As one of the most obvious features of the cultural landscape, folk housing serves as a tool in the determination of culturogeographic regions, the final objective of this study. In this atomistic regional approach, geometry is the principle feature of interest. In other words, the one-dimensional plan type and the three-dimensional form class are the elements of focus in order to distinguish regionality. As opposed to other sub-systems of structural analysis, geometry, especially house from, distinguishes regions of …

The Effects Of Type Of Web Support And Instructional Mode On The Knowledge And Discrimination Of Musical Texture Among Undergraduate Elementary Education Majors., Kenneth Lee Liske Jan 1999

The Effects Of Type Of Web Support And Instructional Mode On The Knowledge And Discrimination Of Musical Texture Among Undergraduate Elementary Education Majors., Kenneth Lee Liske

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of varying types of out-of-class web support media and active (performance) versus passive (listening) modes of in-class instructional activities on the ability of university level non-musicians (N = 58) to define and identify specific characteristics of music texture from printed and recorded musical excerpts. Near and far transfer of learning was also examined. Three web support treatments consisted of investigator-designed supplementary web sites, available for out-of-class access, containing visual content only, audio and visual content, or progressively disclosed text, graphics, and sound. Two instructional mode treatments consisted of participation in …

Diallel Analysis And Molecular Genetics Of Ten Influential Upland Cotton Cultivars., Huangjun Lu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The most influential cultivars from 16 cotton breeding programs were identified based on the analysis of the pedigree of 260 cultivars released between 1970 to 1990. A diallel cross containing ten parents and 45 F 1s (no reciprocals) was conducted to investigate general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability for yield, yield components, and fiber properties of ten influential cultivars. The ten cultivars varied significantly for all the traits except for seed cotton yield and fiber length uniformity. Significant or highly significant GCA effects were detected for 11 of 12 traits studied. This indicates important additive gene action for the …

Executive Compensation And The Investment Opportunity Sets Of Initial Public Offerings., Tanya S. Nowlin Jan 1999

Executive Compensation And The Investment Opportunity Sets Of Initial Public Offerings., Tanya S. Nowlin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines how the components of CEO compensation contracts vary with characteristics of initial public offering firms (IPOs). There are two major steps in the analysis. The first step investigates whether IPOs exhibit variation in characteristics that theory predicts affect compensation contracts. The second step investigates whether these differences across firms are related to the use of accounting versus non-accounting performance evaluation measures, levels of base salary and cash bonuses, and the value of stock options for CEOs. Results from this study support the importance of modeling compensation components separately. Theoretical constructs differ depending on the type of compensation …

Beyond Black And White: The Civil Rights Movement In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1945--1972., Mary Jacqueline Hebert Jan 1999

Beyond Black And White: The Civil Rights Movement In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1945--1972., Mary Jacqueline Hebert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The civil rights movement in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, went beyond a battle between blacks and whites over segregation. Within each racial group, factions developed along class, generational, and educational lines. Interactions among these groups shaped the nature and pace of change in the city. In 1945, black World War II veterans launched the movement. Committed to working within the legal system, they established voter registration schools, participated in the 1953 bus boycott, and sued to equalize teachers' salaries and to integrate public schools. In the 1960s, black college students rose to prominence in the movement and used direct action, including …

Characterization Of Solidification/Stabilization Of Chromium Wastes In Cement Matrix., Aijun Zhang Jan 1999

Characterization Of Solidification/Stabilization Of Chromium Wastes In Cement Matrix., Aijun Zhang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A cement-based solidification/stabilization (S/S) system of Cr wastes treatment has been studied in this program. A combination of the two techniques; namely reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and simultaneous immobilization within a cement matrix, has been found to be effective and practical to treat Cr wastes. Cr(VI) can not be easily and effectively-immobilized in the S/S system unless being reduced to Cr(III). Ferrous compounds are used as reducing reagents. The reduction not only removes the toxic Cr(VI) species but also results in the low-solubility precipitation of (CrxFe 1-x) (OH)3(s) in the S/S system. Long-term and short-term samples were tested through …
