Sequential Loss Of Two Neighboring Exons Of The Tropoelastin Gene During Primate Evolution, Zoltán Szabó, Simona A. Levi-Minzi, Angela M. Christiano, Carole Struminger, Mark Stoneking, Mark A. Batzer, Charles D. Boyd Jan 1999

Boyd

Faculty Publications

Previous evidence has demonstrated the absence of exons 34 and 35 within the 3′ end of the human tropoelastin (ELN) gene. These exons encode conserved polypeptide domains within tropoelastin and are found in the ELN gene in vertebrate species ranging from chickens to rats to cows. We have analyzed the ELN gene in a variety of primate species to determine whether the absence of exons 34 and 35 in humans either is due to allelic variation within the human population or is a general characteristic of the Primates order. An analysis of the 3′ end of the ELN gene in …

Cointegration And Causality In International Agricultural Economics Research, Hector O. Zapata, José M. Gil Jan 1999

Cointegration And Causality In International Agricultural Economics Research, Hector O. Zapata, José M. Gil

Faculty Publications

A review of literature on applications of Granger causality to problems in international agricultural economics research is summarized. The review relates to cointegration theory, and it identifies the areas where recent econometric developments may be of value. Testing procedures are outlined, and a discussion is provided on questions such as non-stationarity and asymptotic distribution of non-causality tests, the relationship between cointegration and causation, the relative merits of various testing procedures, and concerns about testing bivariate causality in higher dimensional models. Finally, a recent econometric development is discussed and its future use in applied research is discussed.

Use Of Western Immunoblot Analysis For Testing Moose Serum For Brucella Suis Biovar 4 Specific Antibodies, Matthew D. Edmonds, Felicia M. Ward, Todd M. O'Hara, Philip H. Elzer Jan 1999

Use Of Western Immunoblot Analysis For Testing Moose Serum For Brucella Suis Biovar 4 Specific Antibodies, Matthew D. Edmonds, Felicia M. Ward, Todd M. O'Hara, Philip H. Elzer

Faculty Publications

To determine if 12 moose (Alces alces) from northern Alaska with agglutinating antibodies specific for Brucella spp. had been exposed to either B. suis biovar 4 or B. abortus biovar 1, western immunoblot serologic analysis was performed. Differential serologic responses to strain specific A and M antigenic variances of the lipopolysaccharide O-polysaccharide sugar allowed strain identification. Prior to examination, test sera were absorbed with killed whole cells from either B. abortus biovar 1, containing predominately A antigen (A+ M-); B. melitensis biovar 1, containing essentially M antigen (A-M+); or B. suis biovar 4, containing both antigenic types (A+ M+). The …

The Siderophore 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic Acid Is Not Required For Virulence Of Brucella Abortus In Balb/C Mice, Bryan H. Bellaire, Philip H. Elzer, Cynthia L. Baldwin, R. Martin Roop Jan 1999

The Siderophore 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic Acid Is Not Required For Virulence Of Brucella Abortus In Balb/C Mice, Bryan H. Bellaire, Philip H. Elzer, Cynthia L. Baldwin, R. Martin Roop

Faculty Publications

2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA) is the only siderophore described for Brucella, and previous studies suggested that DHBA might contribute to the capacity of these organisms to persist in host macrophages. Employing an isogenic siderophore mutant (ΔentC) constructed from virulent Brucella abortus 2308, however, we found that production of DHBA is not required for replication in cultured murine macrophages or for the establishment and maintenance of chronic infection in the BALB/c mouse model.

Acute Clinical Disease In Cats Following Infection With A Pathogenic Strain Of Bartonella Henselae (Lsu16), Kathy L. O'Reilly, Rudy W. Bauer, Rebecca L. Freeland, Lane D. Foil, Keith J. Hughes, Kristen R. Rohde, Alma F. Roy, Rhett W. Stout, Patricia C. Triche

Faculty Publications

Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of human cat scratch disease as well as several serious sequelae of infections, including bacillary angiomatosis and bacillary peliosis. Conflicting reports describe the pathogenesis of B. henselae in the cat. In this study, we characterized a strain of B. henselae termed LSU16. This strain was isolated on rabbit blood agar from a naturally infected 10-month-old female cat during a recurrent episode of bacteremia. The bacterial species was confirmed by PCR- restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Nine cats were infected intradermally with 5 x 107 CFU of LSU16, and clinical signs, antibody responses, and bacteremia …

Gap-Anisotropic Model For The Narrow-Gap Kondo Insulators, Juana Moreno, P. Coleman Jan 1999

Gap-Anisotropic Model For The Narrow-Gap Kondo Insulators, Juana Moreno, P. Coleman

Faculty Publications

A theory is presented which accounts for the dynamical generation of a hybridization gap with nodes in the Kondo insulating materials CeNiSn and CeRhSb. By assuming that Coulomb interactions drive both charge and shape fluctuations of the Cerium f-state to high energies we are able to derive an effective three-channel Kondo lattice model. Interference amongst the different channels causes the hybridization to develop nodes and allows us to account for the formation of a nodal semi-metal. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Host Galaxy Statistics, D. L. Band, D. H. Hartmann, B. E. Schaefer Jan 1999

Host Galaxy Statistics, D. L. Band, D. H. Hartmann, B. E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

The galaxies observed within the error boxes of gamma-ray bursts are inconsistent with the host galaxies predicted by the simplest "minimal" cosmological model where bursts emit ∼ 6 1050 ergs but are consistent with a standard candle energy of ∼ 1053 ergs (if radiated isotropically). Although these calculations utilize the host galaxy data but not the burst intensities, we have developed the methodology to use all the available observations to model the redshift and intensity distributions.

Severe New Limits On The Host Galaxies Of Gamma-Ray Bursts, B. E. Schaefer Jan 1999

Severe New Limits On The Host Galaxies Of Gamma-Ray Bursts, B. E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

Most burst models require bursters to reside in normal host galaxies with peak luminosities of L = 1 1057 photon s-1 or L = 2 1058 photon s-1. These models can be directly tested by looking for host galaxies in small GRB error boxes in either of two data sets: (1) 8 optical transients detected for SAX bursts and (2) 23 of the all-time bright bursts. If the hosts are normal galaxies, then analysis of either data set shows L > 6 1058 photon s-1. This result strongly rejects both luminosity cases provided bursters appear in normal host galaxies, with the …

Time Dilation And The Star Formation Scenario, M. Deng, B. E. Schaefer Jan 1999

Time Dilation And The Star Formation Scenario, M. Deng, B. E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

We investigate the dependence of the redshift vs. brightness relation of GRBs upon the width of GRB luminosity function and the cosmological models. The relation is then fit to our observed time dilation data of GRBs. It is found that the best fit average luminosity ranges from L0 = 1.1 ± 0.3 1057 photons s-1 in a standard candle luminosity model to < L > = 8.7 ± 3.6 1057 photons s-1 in a cosmological model with a broad luminosity function φ(L) = C·L-β. Our fits suggest that it is only possible to accomodate the large distance scale suggested by the Star Formation …

The Late-Time Light Curve Of Sn 1998bw Associated With Grb 980425, Eric H. Mckenzie, Bradley E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

We report 139 photometric observations through the B, V, and I filters of the supernova SN 1998bw, an object which is associated with the gamma-ray burst GRB 980425. Detailed light curves of this unique supernova can be compared with theoretical models, so we report here our light curve for 123 days between 1998 June 27 and 1998 October 28. The light curve of SN 1998bw is consistent with those of the Type Ic class. We find that the magnitude versus time relation for this supernova is linear to within 0.05 mag in all colors over the entire duration of our …

Severe Limits On Variations Of The Speed Of Light With Frequency, Bradley E. Schaefer Jan 1999

Severe Limits On Variations Of The Speed Of Light With Frequency, Bradley E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

Explosive astrophysical events at high redshift can be used to place severe limits on the fractional variation in the speed of light with frequency (Δc/c), the photon mass (mγ), and the energy scale of quantum gravity (EQG). I find Δc/c<6.3×10-21 based on the simultaneous arrival of a flare in GRB 930229 with a rise time of 220±30μs for photons of 30 and 200 keV. The limit on mγ is 4.2×10-44g for GRB 980703 from radio to gamma ray observations. The limit on EQG is 8.3×1016GeV for GRB 930131 from 30 keV to 80 MeV photons. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

We report the discovery of a compressibility phase transition at 160 K in crystalline copolymer films of vinylidene fluoride (70%) with trifluoroethylene (30%). This phase transition is distinct from the known bulk ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition at 353 K and surface ferroelectric phase transition at 295 K. The new phase transition is characterized by an increase in the effective Debye temperature from 48 to 245 K along the 〈010〉 direction as the temperature falls below 160 K. This phase transition is evident in neutron scattering, x-ray diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission, and in the dipole active phonon modes in electron energy-loss spectroscopy. © …

Ultrasonic Attenuation In Clean D-Wave Superconductors, I. Vekhter, E. J. Nicol, J. P. Carbotte

Faculty Publications

We consider the attenuation of longitudinal ultrasonic waves in a clean two-dimensional d-wave superconductor. We show that the attenuation coefficient is linear in temperature at low temperatures for all in-plane directions of the propagation of the ultrasound, and that the coefficient of the linear term can be used to determine the parameters crucial for the low-temperature transport in these compounds. © 1999 American Physical Society.

Anisotropic Thermodynamics Of (Formula Presented)-Wave Superconductors In The Vortex State, I. Vekhter

Faculty Publications

We show that the density of states and the thermodynamic properties of a two-dimensional (Formula presented)-wave superconductor in the vortex state with applied magnetic field H in the plane depend on the angle between H and the order-parameter nodes. Within a semiclassical treatment of the extended quasiparticle states, we obtain fourfold oscillations of the specific heat, measurement of which provides a simple probe of gap symmetry. The frequency dependence of the density of states and the temperature dependence of thermodynamic properties obey different power laws for field in the nodal and antinodal direction. The fourfold pattern is changed to twofold …

Quasiparticle Thermal Conductivity In The Vortex State Of High- Tccuprates, I. Vekhter, A. Houghton

Faculty Publications

We present the results of a microscopic calculation of the longitudinal thermal conductivity, κxx, of a d-wave superconductor in the mixed state. Our results show an increase in the thermal conductivity with the applied field at low temperatures and a decrease followed by a nearly field independent κxx(H) at higher temperatures, in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. We discuss the relationship between the slope of the superconducting gap and the plateau in κxx(H). © 1999 The American Physical Society.

Quasiparticle Transport In The Vortex State Of D-Wave Superconductors, I. Vekhter Jan 1999

Quasiparticle Transport In The Vortex State Of D-Wave Superconductors, I. Vekhter

Faculty Publications

We calculate the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the Raman response, superfluid density, and the NMR relaxation rate in the vortex state of a d-wave superconductor arising from the Doppler energy shift of extended quasiparticle states. Our results are valid both at low temperatures, where we observe scaling with variable (Formula presented) and obtain an explicit form of the scaling functions, and beyond this region. We derive a universal frequency-dependent scaling relation for the Raman intensity, and discuss the breakdown of the single relaxation rate approach to the NMR response. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

Quantum-Path Analysis And Phase Matching Of High-Order Harmonic Generation And High-Order Frequency Mixing Processes In Strong Laser Fields, Philippe Balcou, Anne S. Dederichs, Mette B. Gaarde, Anne L'Huillier

Faculty Publications

We study phase-matching conditions for high-order harmonic generation as well as high-order sum- and difference-frequency mixing processes in strong laser fields, using a graphical approach described in Balcou et al (1997 Phys. Rev. A 55 3204-10). This method is based on the analysis of the different quantum paths that contribute, with different phase properties, to the single-atom response. We propose a simple numerical method to disentangle the quantum paths contributing to the generation process. We present graphical maps of the phase matching around the laser focus, which allow one to predict the geometries that optimize the conversion efficiency of the …

High harmonic radiation spectra up to 19th order in alkali metal vapors excited by an intense, picosecond mid-infrared (3-4 μm) laser are reported and compared to theory. The strong-field dynamics in the alkali metal atoms exhibit significant differences from all previously studied systems due to the strong coupling between their ground and first excited states. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

Temporal Coherence Of High-Order Harmonics, C. Lyngå, M. B. Gaarde, C. Delfin, M. Bellini, T. W. Hänsch, A. L’ Huillier, C. G. Wahlström

Faculty Publications

Systematic studies of the temporal coherence properties of high-order harmonic radiation are presented. These complement our previous investigations [Bellini et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 297 (1998)], where we showed the separation of the far-field pattern of high-order harmonics into two distinct spatial regions with different coherence times. Here we show how the coherence time of the inner and outer regions changes as a function of the harmonic order, the laser intensity, and the focusing conditions. Good agreement with the predictions of the semiclassical model of harmonic generation is obtained. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

We study experimentally how to control and improve phase matching of high-order harmonic generation. We use a birefringent lens and a birefringent compensator to obtain a fundamental laser pulse (150 fs, 800 nm, ∼4 mJ) with two foci separated by 6.2 mm along the propagation axis and with a controllable phase delay between the polarizations along the optic axes of the birefringent optical components. This enables us to enhance the high-order harmonic conversion efficiency for the high-order harmonics in neon to [Formula Presented] a factor of 4 higher compared to a single-focus setup in similar conditions. The enhancement is achieved …

Spatiotemporal Separation Of High Harmonic Radiation Into Two Quantum Path Components, M. B. Gaarde, F. Salin, E. Constant, Ph Balcou, K. J. Schafer, K. C. Kulander, A. L’Huillier

Faculty Publications

We present a spatiotemporal analysis of high harmonic generation, showing evidence for the presence of several quantum path contributions to the atomic dipole moment. We show that the harmonic radiation can largely be described as a sum of two fields having a phase proportional to the intensity of the generating field. We compare our results to recent experimental results demonstrating this separation [M. Bellini et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 297 (1998)]. We show how the temporal and spatial coherence properties are influenced by this effect, and discuss how it could be used to obtain better control of the generated …

Period-Doubling Behavior In Frontal Polymerization Of Multifunctional Acrylates, Jonathan Masere, Felicia Stewart, Timothy Meehan, John A. Pojman

Faculty Publications

Front dynamics in the frontal polymerization of two multifunctional acrylate monomers, 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate (TMPTA), with Lupersol 231 [1,1-di(t-butylperoxy)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane] as the initiator, are studied. In most frontal polymerization systems, the dynamics are associated with a planar front propagating through the sample. However, in some cases, front behavior can be altered: the front becomes nonplanar characterized by complex patterns like spin modes and pulsations. To determine how these periodic and aperiodic modes arise, reactant solutions consisting of HDDA diluted with diethyl phthalate (DEP) and TMPTA diluted with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were used in the study. In the …

Spin State And Ligand Dissociation In [Cpcol2] Complexes (L = Ph3, H2C=Ch2): A Computational Study, Rinaldo Poli, Kevin M. Smith

Faculty Publications

The relative energies of [CpCoL] compounds (L = PH3, H2C= CH2) were calculated at the DFT/B3LYP level of theory. The triplet spin state was found to be favored over the singlet by between 33.0 and 21.0 kcal mol-1 for both fixed and optimized geometries. The basis set size was found to be important for the energy calculations, particularly when the energetics of ligand dissociation was examined. The role of the triplet spin state in facilitating the ligand dissociation process is discussed.

Separation Of Saturated And Unsaturated Free Fatty Acids Using Capillary Electrophoresis With Indirect Photometric Detection, F. Haddadian, S. A. Shamsi, I. M. Warner

Faculty Publications

The capillary zone electrophoresis separation of various mixtures of saturated and unsaturated free fatty acids (FFAs) is performed using adenosine monophosphate (AMP) as an indirect photometric detection reagent. The presence of Brij in the electrolyte and a temperature of 40°C in the running buffer are required to improve solubility of the very long chain FFAs. The separation of C12-C31 differing by only one carbon is achieved using N-methylformamide (NMF)-dioxane (3:2), 40mM Tris, 2.5mM AMP, and 0.5% (w/v) Brij in approximately 40 min. However, baseline resolution of unsaturated isomers of FFAs (C14-C22) requires the presence of water, because water enhances the …
