Revisiting Gettysburg: A Poignant Encounter Of Soldiers And Civilians With History, Frank E. Vandiver

Civil War Book Review

What makes Gettysburg so constantly engaging? One of America's most decisive battles, it shattered the mythic invincibility surrounding Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia, and, along with the fall of Vicksburg, it began the South's long agony to Appomattox. But something more causes ris....

Rough Sketches: Political Commentary Through Cartoons, James Marten Sep 1999

Rough Sketches: Political Commentary Through Cartoons, James Marten

Civil War Book Review

Political cartoons have the power to illustrate the historical period to which they belong. For many baby-boomers, the political turmoil of the early 1970s can be visualized by recalling Doonesbury's portrayal of the brick wall appearing around the Nixon White House. Editor Kristen M. Smith, ....

The Final Campaign: Confederate Defeat And The Corrosion Of Spirit, Tom G. Wicker Sep 1999

The Final Campaign: Confederate Defeat And The Corrosion Of Spirit, Tom G. Wicker

Civil War Book Review

A reviewer should never criticize an author for not writing the book the reviewer would have written on the same subject. A reviewer may point out what he knows to be omissions and misinterpretations, of course, even claim superior knowledge -- but the author's book is before him, not some ot....

A Most Perfect Man': What General Robert E. Lee Can Still Teach Us, Josiah Bunting Iii Sep 1999

A Most Perfect Man': What General Robert E. Lee Can Still Teach Us, Josiah Bunting Iii

Civil War Book Review

To reconstruct the past, through discipline and discrimination, is satisfying to the historian, and possibly useful to those who read him. To make explicit its lessons, somehow to make them useful and instructive, and possibly influential, is more difficult, and perhaps more dangerous. Harry Crocke....

Dust Formation Above Cool Magnetic Spots In Evolved Stars, Noam Soker, Geoffrey C. Clayton Aug 1999

Dust Formation Above Cool Magnetic Spots In Evolved Stars, Noam Soker, Geoffrey C. Clayton

Faculty Publications

We examine the structure of cool magnetic spots in the photospheres of evolved stars, specifically asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. We find that the photosphere of a cool magnetic spot will be above the surrounding photosphere of AGB stars, which is the opposite of the situation in the Sun. This results from the behaviour of the opacity, which increases with decreasing temperature, which again is the opposite of the behaviour of the opacity near the effective temperature of the Sun. We analyse the formation of dust above the cool magnetic spots, and suggest that …

The Spectrum Of Grb 930131 ("Superbowl Burst") From 20 Kev To 200 Mev, Volker Bromm, Bradley E. Schaefer Aug 1999

The Spectrum Of Grb 930131 ("Superbowl Burst") From 20 Kev To 200 Mev, Volker Bromm, Bradley E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

We have constructed a broadband spectrum for GRB 930131 (the "Superbowl Burst"), ranging from 20 keV to 200 MeV, by combining spectral information from the Gamma Ray Observatory's BATSE, COMPTEL, and EGRET instruments. We present general methods for combining spectra from different time intervals obtained by the same instrument as well as for combining spectra from the same time interval taken by different instruments. The resulting spectrum is remarkably flat (in vFv-space) up to high energies. We find that the spectral shape can be successfully fitted by the shocked synchrotron emission model of Tavani. We present evidence that the flatness …

The Effect Of Hot Spots On The Performance Of Mesh--Based Networks, Yazan M. Al-Issa Aug 1999

The Effect Of Hot Spots On The Performance Of Mesh--Based Networks, Yazan M. Al-Issa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Direct network performance is affected by different design parameters which include number of virtual channels, number of ports, routing algorithm, switching technique, deadlock handling technique, packet size, and buffer size. Another factor that affects network performance is the traffic pattern. In this thesis, we study the effect of hotspot traffic on system performance. Specifically, we study the effect of hotspot factor, hotspot number, and hot spot location on the performance of mesh-based networks. Simulations are run on two network topologies, both the mesh and torus. We pay more attention to meshes because they are widely used in commercial machines. Comparisons …

A View From The Pacific: Archaeological Analysis Of Materials From Nicaragua's Sixteenth Century Spanish Town Of Leon Viejo, Kira Blaisdell-Sloan Aug 1999

A View From The Pacific: Archaeological Analysis Of Materials From Nicaragua's Sixteenth Century Spanish Town Of Leon Viejo, Kira Blaisdell-Sloan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1524 the town of Leon Viejo was founded by Hernandez de Cordova on the Northwestern shore of Lake Managua in Nicaragua. Eighty-six years later it was abandoned, as earthquakes and volcanic activity made the site undesirable. At the present time, Leon Viejo represents the only Pacific coast Spanish occupied sixteenth century colonial townsite for which archaeological data is available. In this thesis I present a historically informed analysis of archaeological materials recovered from eight separate structures located towards the center of this site.

Utilizing The Annales Historical Approach, World Systems Theory, community and household level analysis, I weave together …

Seeking Causal Explanations In Social Epidemiology, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper Jul 1999

Seeking Causal Explanations In Social Epidemiology, Jay S. Kaufman, Richard S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

Social factors are associated with a wide variety of health outcomes. Social epidemiology has successfully used the traditional methods of surveillance and description to establish consistent relations between social factors and health status. Epidemiology as an etiologic science, however, has been largely ineffective in moving toward causal explanations for these observed patterns. Using the counterfactual approach to causal inference, the authors describe several fundamental problems that often arise when researchers seek to infer explanatory mechanisms from data on social factors. Contrasts that form standard causal effect estimates require implicit unobserved (counterfactual) quantities, because observational data provide only one exposure state …

Elser, Nancy N. Rabalais, W. M. Lewis Jr., R. Eugene Turner, J. Corredor, D. Soto, A. Yanez Arancibia, J. A. Kopaska, R. W. Howarth

Faculty Publications

Published data and analyses from temperate and tropical aquatic systems are used to summarize knowledge about the potential impact of land-use alteration on the nitrogen biogeochemistry of tropical aquatic ecosystems, identify important patterns and recommend key needs for research. The tropical N-cycle is traced from pre-disturbance conditions through the phases of disturbance, highlighting major differences between tropical and temperate systems that might influence development strategies in the tropics. Analyses suggest that tropical freshwaters are more frequently N-limited than temperate zones, while tropical marine systems may show more frequent P limitation. These analyses indicate that disturbances to pristine tropical lands will …

Black-White Differences In Disability And Morbidity In The Last Years Of Life, Youlian Liao, Daniel L. Mcgee, Guichan Cao, Richard S. Cooper Jun 1999

Black-White Differences In Disability And Morbidity In The Last Years Of Life, Youlian Liao, Daniel L. Mcgee, Guichan Cao, Richard S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

To assess black-white differences in disability and morbidity in the last years of life, the authors analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey from 1986 to 1994, with mortality follow-up through December 1995. A baseline household interview was conducted for 10,187 decedents aged 50 years and over within 2 years before death. Data collected included long- term limitation of activity, number of chronic conditions, number of bed days, doctor visits, and days of short hospital stay during the year preceding the interview. For both blacks and whites, educational attainment was inversely associated with disability/morbidity indices. Black decedents had greater …

Functional Characterization Of The Hvea Homolog Specified By African Green Monkey Kidney Cells With A Herpes Simplex Virus Expressing The Green Fluorescence Protein, Timothy P. Foster, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Jun 1999

Functional Characterization Of The Hvea Homolog Specified By African Green Monkey Kidney Cells With A Herpes Simplex Virus Expressing The Green Fluorescence Protein, Timothy P. Foster, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

We cloned the gene specified by African monkey kidney cells (Vero) that codes for the homolog of the herpes virus entry mediator (HveA) specified by HeLa cells. The primary sequence of the monkey HveA (HveAs) differed significantly from HveA. Single amino acid differences were distributed throughout the amino and carboxyl terminal portions of the HveAs in comparison with the HveA, whereas certain regions were highly conserved. The predicted membrane spanning domains of the two receptors differed substantially due to insertions and deletions of short amino acid sequences. The ability of HveAs to mediate HSV virus entry was tested in a …

Phytochelatin Synthase Genes From Arabidopsis And The Yeast Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Suk Bong Ha, Aaron P. Smith, Ross Howden, Wendy M. Dietrich, Sarah Bugg, Matthew J. O'Connell, Peter B. Goldsbrough, Christopher S. Cobbett Jun 1999

Phytochelatin Synthase Genes From Arabidopsis And The Yeast Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Suk Bong Ha, Aaron P. Smith, Ross Howden, Wendy M. Dietrich, Sarah Bugg, Matthew J. O'Connell, Peter B. Goldsbrough, Christopher S. Cobbett

Faculty Publications

Phytochelatins (PCs), a family of heavy metal-inducible peptides important in the detoxification of heavy metals, have been identified in plants and some microorganisms, including Schizosaccharomyces pombe, but not in animals. PCs are synthesized enzymatically from glutathione (GSH) by PC synthase in the presence of heavy metal ions. In Arabidopsis, the CAD1 gene, identified by using Cd-sensitive, PC-deficient cad1 mutants, has been proposed to encode PC synthase. Using a positional cloning strategy, we have isolated the CAD1 gene. Database searches identified a homologous gene in S. pombe, and a mutant with a targeted deletion of this gene was also Cd sensitive …

We report measurements of the mass density, ΩM, and cosmological-constant energy density, ΩΛ of the universe based on the analysis of 42 type Ia supernovae discovered by the Supernova Cosmology Project. The magnitude-redshift data for these supernovae, at redshifts between 0.18 and 0.83, are fitted jointly with a set of supernovae from the Calán/Tololo Supernova Survey, at redshifts below 0.1, to yield values for the cosmological parameters. All supernova peak magnitudes are standardized using a SN Ia light-curve width-luminosity relation. The measurement yields a joint probability distribution of the cosmological parameters that is approximated by the relation 0.8ΩM - 0.6ΩΛ …

Faculty Publications

The biological role(s) proposed for UCP3 in energy homeostasis have been based primarily upon amino acid sequence homology to UCP1. Spontaneous mutations of UCP3 have been described in humans, but not in rodents. The functional consequences—or lack thereof—of these mutations in humans will be of great importance in elucidating the biology of this protein. The results of two such studies are summarized here. © 1999 Stockton Press. All rights reserved.
