Purpose: Geographic access to cancer care is known to significantly impact utilization and outcomes. Longer travel times have negative impacts for patients requiring highly specialized care, such as for rare cancers, and for those in rural areas. Scant population-based research informs geographic access to care for rare cancers and whether rurality impacts that access. Methods: Using Medicare data (2014-2015), we identified prevalent cancers and cancer-directed surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. We classified cancers as rare (incidence <6/100,000/year) or common (incidence ≥6/100,000/year) using previously published thresholds and categorized rurality from ZIP code of beneficiary residence. We estimated travel time between beneficiaries and providers for each service based on ZIP code. Descriptive statistics summarized travel time by rare versus common cancers, service type, and rurality. Findings: We included 1,169,761 Medicare beneficiaries (21.9% in nonmetropolitan areas), 87,399; 7.5% had rare cancers, with 9,133,003 cancer-directed services. Travel times for cancer services ranged from approximately 29 minutes (25th percentile) to 68 minutes (75th percentile). Travel times were similar for rare and common cancers overall (median: 45 vs 43 minutes) but differed by service type; 13.4% of surgeries were >2 hours away for rare cancers, compared to 8.3% for common cancers. Increasing rurality disproportionately increased travel time to surgical care for rare compared to …6/100,000/year)>

We used the Swarm-C accelerometer data to invert the orbital atmospheric density in this study. First, the Swarm-C satellite mission data were obtained from the ESA’s public data platform, and preliminary data error correction was performed. This paper refers to the calibration method of GRACE-A satellite accelerometer data. It adds linear temperature correction on the original basis. Moreover, this study’s accelerometer data correction results were compared with the data correction results published by the ESA. In order to explore the influence of light radiation on the accelerometer, we established a geometric model of Swarm-C to simulate the physical shape of …

The development of wood derived cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs) based sustainable composites is potential to address the plastic pollution issue. However, because of strong hydrogen bonding interactions inside the CNCs, it is still challenging to obtain composites with satisfied comprehensive performance via the incorporation of CNCs into poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix directly, so two strategies combined with dopamine modification, base bath solution and ferric (III) ion treatment were reported to tailor the comprehensive performance of PVA/CNC composites. The comparative study indicated that both of physically cross-linked PDA@CNC/PVA and PVA/CNC composites have obvious improvement in term of mechanical and water resistance …

Syndepositional diagenesis is a complicating factor when interpreting geochemical proxies in carbonate sedimentary environments. Previous studies have suggested that carbonate deposits may preserve the geochemical and isotopic signatures of seawater that can be used for paleo-redox reconstructions. However, more work is necessary to understand how these trace metals are preserved. The present study examines shallow marine carbonate sediments from the Bahamas to better understand diagenetic effects on trace metal uptake and sequestration. Analysis of diagenetic effects and trace metal uptake follows a multi-method approach, combining sequential extraction, stable isotope analyses, and rare earth elemental analysis. Stable isotopes track bacterial sulfate …

Widespread adoption of high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane electrochemical systems, such as fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs), requires models and computational tools for accurate optimization and guiding new materials for enhancing performance and durability. In this contribution, knowledge-based modelling and data-driven modelling are combined using Few-Shot Learning and implementing an Automated Machine Learning framework for the generation of Machine Learning-based surrogate models. Applicability of the resulting model for derivative-free optimization is demonstrated. Additionally, a way of considering extrapolation in the optimization task is presented. Results show that although extrapolation is needed to achieve better solutions during optimization, it can be monitored and managed. …

A biomarker is a physiological observable marker that acts as a stand-in and, in the best-case scenario, forecasts a clinically significant outcome. Diagnostic biomarkers are more convenient and cost-effective than directly measuring the ultimate clinical outcome. Cancer is among the most prominent global health problems and a major cause of morbidity and death globally. Therefore, cancer biomarker assays that are trustworthy, consistent, precise, and verified are desperately needed. Biomarker-based tumor detection holds a lot of promise for improving disease knowledge at the molecular scale and early detection and surveillance. In contrast to conventional approaches, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) allows for …

Fracture behavior of carbon steel 1018 operating in low-temperature environments is investigated. Specifically, fully-reversed bending experimental tests are performed to examine the efficacy of applying the concept of Fracture Fatigue Entropy (FFE) for predicting fatigue life at different environmental temperatures. A large cooling chamber was constructed that houses the entire bending test rig and maintains the environmental temperature at the desired value down to −10 °C. It is shown that under conditions tested, fatigue life improves at lower operating temperatures. Results also reveal that FFE remains nearly constant and can be used for reliable prediction of fatigue life. Illustrative examples …

The presence of moisture beneath the pavement surface is a matter of great concerns as it is responsible for significant distresses such as asphalt concrete (AC) stripping, fatigue cracking, rutting, and poor durability of asphalt mixes. The objective of this study was to evaluate and recommend an asphalt mixture design that would provide superior performance against AC stripping and cracking. To achieve this objective, a laboratory test factorial was developed to evaluate the use of nanomaterials, emerging anti-stripping agents, warm-mix asphalt technologies, and adhesion promotors. In the experimental program, the modified Lottman test (AASHTO T 283) and the Indirect Tensile …

Faculty Publications
Exfoliated MXene nanosheets are integrated with cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) to form composite aerogels with high electric conductivity. The combination of CNFs and MXene nanosheets forms a unique “accordion-like” hierarchical architecture with MXene-CNF pillared layers through ice-crystal templating. Benefiting from the special “layer-strut” structure, the MXene/CNF composite aerogels have low density (50 mg/cm3), excellent compressibility and recoverability, as well as superior fatigue resistance (up to 1000 cycles). When being used as a piezoresistive sensor, the composite aerogel exhibits high sensitivity upon different strains, stable sensing performance with various compressive frequencies, broad detection range, and quick responsiveness (0.48 s). Moreover, the piezoresistive …

Asprosin, a recently identified adipokine, activates agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARH) via binding to protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor δ (Ptprd) to increase food intake. However, the intracellular mechanisms responsible for asprosin/Ptprd-mediated activation of AgRPARH neurons remain unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the small-conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK) channel is required for the stimulatory effects of asprosin/Ptprd on AgRPARH neurons. Specifically, we found that deficiency or elevation of circulating asprosin increased or decreased the SK current in AgRPARH neurons, respectively. AgRPARH-specific deletion of SK3 (an SK channel subtype highly expressed in AgRPARH neurons) blocked asprosin-induced …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The discovery of new materials like catalysts, polymeric films, and biomolecules, is driven by industrial needs such as improving reaction or separation selectivity, enhancing therapeutic effects on medical treatments, or reducing costs of replacement. However, deployment of these advances in industrial applications is often hindered by the lack of models needed for design and optimization. Due to the novelty of materials and devices, experimental data and first principles' knowledge are scarce, making it hard to build models either via data-driven or knowledge based approaches. In this context, a way to efficiently combine domain knowledge with data could provide a pathway …

The wet processing of robusta coffee starts with harvesting coffee cherries, followed by sorting the cherries, pulping, fermentation, washing, drying, hard skin hulling, bean sorting, and packaging. Soaking fruit before pulping is an alternative for coffee farmers to delay the pulping process if time does not al-low it. The fermentation process aims to remove mucus that is firmly attached to the hard skin. The addition of L. casei bacteria can accelerate the process but affect the final taste. This study aimed to optimize the duration of soaking and fermentation processes for obtaining coffee beans with a minimum number of unpeeled …

Faculty Publications
Triploid Eastern oysters have been reported to suffer greater mortalities than diploids when exposed to low-salinity (<5) conditions in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic estuaries. As such, the effect of broodstock parentage was investigated on the low-salinity tolerance of triploid progeny produced by mating diploid females (collected from three Louisiana estuaries differing in salinity regimes) with male tetraploids at two hatcheries. Diploid crosses were also produced using the wild broodstocks to verify expected differences in low-salinity tolerance among diploid progeny and between ploidy levels. All progeny were deployed at low and moderate-salinity (averages of 9.3 and 19.4) field sites to monitor monthly growth and mortality. Sex ratio, gametogenic stage, gonad-to-body ratio, condition index, and Perkinsus marinus infection were also measured periodically at both field sites Although high triploid mortality at the low-salinity site prevented complete analysis, results indicated that diploid parentage had little effect on triploid survival at low salinity. Broodstock parentage affected diploid mortality and growth, although results did not match with predictions made based on historical salinity at broodstock collection sites. Ploidy level had the largest effect on triploid survival and growth followed by the hatchery site where the oysters were produced.

Metastable phases were formed in Mn1-xCoxNiGe (x = 0.05 and 0.08) by annealing at 800 °C followed by rapid cooling, i.e., quenching, at ambient pressure (P = 0) and under a pressure of P = 3.5 GPa, and their phase transitions and associated magnetocaloric properties were investigated. The crystal cell volumes of the metastable phases decreased, and their structural transitions significantly shifted to lower temperatures relative to those of the slow-cooled compounds, with a greater reduction observed in the samples where the rapid cooling occurred under high pressures. The magnetic and structural transitions coupled to form a magnetostructural transition in …

We propose an alternative scheme for phase estimation in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with photon recycling. It is demonstrated that with the same coherent-state input and homodyne detection, our proposal possesses a phase sensitivity beyond the traditional MZI. For instance, it can achieve an enhancement factor of ∼9.32 in the phase sensitivity compared with the conventional scheme even with a photon loss of 10% on the photon-recycled arm. From another point of view, the quantum Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB) is also investigated. It is found that our scheme is able to achieve a lower QCRB than the traditional one. Intriguingly, the …

Despite the significant improvements in manufacturing and synthesis processes of metals and ceramics in the past decades, there are still areas in which the procedure is still frequently more of an art or skill rather than a science. Therefore, systematic and combined experimental and computational studies are required to facilitate the development of techniques that offer thorough understanding of the events taking place during manufacturing and synthesis processes. With regard to these issues, it is paramount to address microscale characterizations and atomic scale understanding of the events during fabrication processes. One of the focuses of this study is unraveling fundamental …

Effects Of Neighborhood Disadvantage And Peer Deviance On Conduct Problems: Interactions With Age Of Onset, Courtney Marie Goetz
Effects Of Neighborhood Disadvantage And Peer Deviance On Conduct Problems: Interactions With Age Of Onset, Courtney Marie Goetz
LSU Master's Theses
Youth with conduct problems (CP) generally fall into two developmental classifications, child-onset and adolescent-onset, which exhibit different causal processes and life course trajectories. Research suggests that child-onset CP is more likely to be related to individual predispositions, while adolescent-onset CP is more associated with social factors, such as peer delinquency. Living in impoverished and disorganized neighborhoods increases the risk for associating with deviant peers. Thus, the current study tested the hypothesis that neighborhood factors would be more strongly associated with adolescent-onset CP than child-onset CP, which would be explained by a greater association with deviant peers. Linear and negative binomial …

Sugarcane bagasse ash (BA), an agricultural byproduct, has been suggested as a sustainable material to partially replace cement and sand in traditional concrete. However, the feasibility of using BA in novel concrete materials, such as engineered cementitious composites (ECC) and fiber-reinforced geopolymer composites (FRGC), has not been investigated. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to: (a) characterize the properties of Louisiana BA produced from different methodologies; (b) quantify the influence of BA as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) on concrete properties; (c) assess the feasibility of developing normal- and high-strength ECCs using BA as SCM and fine aggregate, and (d) …

The generalized stacking fault energy profile is fundamental to models of metal plasticity and thus a key parameter for alloy design. However, to account for thermal vibrations, models require the stacking fault free energy profile, but current methods can only calculate metastable intrinsic stacking faults. We show how the full stacking fault free energy profile can be calculated using PAFI, a linear scaling method that fully accounts for anharmonic thermal vibrations. Applying our approach to empirical and machine learning potentials for FCC Cu, we show via direct comparison with molecular dynamics simulations that accounting for temperature effects is essential to …
