Hangings In The Thicket: Vigilantism Was Law In The 'Dark Corner Of The Confederacy', Jon L. Wakelyn Mar 2000

Hangings In The Thicket: Vigilantism Was Law In The 'Dark Corner Of The Confederacy', Jon L. Wakelyn

Civil War Book Review

Awful things may be done by neighbor to neighbor in the pressured midst of civil conflict. In the southern states during the Civil War, citizens were persecuted sometimes because they did not show enough enthusiasm for -- or outright opposed -- the Confederate cause. Self-styled defenders of civil o....

Havoc In The Highlands: Appalachia's Feuding Residents Encounter Military Occupation, Frank Edward Bourne Mar 2000

Havoc In The Highlands: Appalachia's Feuding Residents Encounter Military Occupation, Frank Edward Bourne

Civil War Book Review

When traveling west along the North Carolina Piedmont, one sees the Blue Ridge rise abruptly, 3,000 to 5,000 feet, like a giant fortress. This terrain, which is heavily forested, with rushing rivers and deep valleys, is the area covered in The Heart of Confederate Appalachia. This study of we....

Match Of Wits: Lee And Grant Face Off At The North Anna River, Jerry L. Russell Mar 2000

Match Of Wits: Lee And Grant Face Off At The North Anna River, Jerry L. Russell

Civil War Book Review

For most who study Civil War military history, Grant's Overland campaign from May 1864 until the end of the War seems an inexorable and inevitable advance from Washington to Appomattox. Grant, called "the butcher" by some because of the devastating casualties sustained by his Army of the Potomac, ha....

Politics And Generals: Winfield Scott And Robert E. Lee At The Gates Of Mexico City, Thomas Dyja Mar 2000

Politics And Generals: Winfield Scott And Robert E. Lee At The Gates Of Mexico City, Thomas Dyja

Civil War Book Review

I don't believe any writer could create a fictional war better than the truth of the Civil War. The characters and settings, seething passions and inhuman horrors, dramatic twists and turns, a whopper climax at Gettysburg, and the tragic, inevitable road to the sequel-begging ending at Appomattox --....

Pilgrimage To Springfield: A British Writer's Look At Lincoln And Modern America, Ian Crowe Mar 2000

Pilgrimage To Springfield: A British Writer's Look At Lincoln And Modern America, Ian Crowe

Civil War Book Review

In war: resolution. In defeat: defiance. In victory: magnanimity. In peace: goodwill." If Jan Morris has captured her subject with any degree of accuracy, those words by Sir Winston Churchill might aptly have draped Lincoln's funeral train as it snaked its way to Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln is th....

Visual War: Dictionary Offers Crisp Text And Splashy Illustrations, Carolyn P. Yoder

Civil War Book Review

The Visual Dictionary of the Civil War is certainly a beautiful book. A large trim size, a clean design with plenty of archival black-and-white and color illustrations, and just enough words make this book not only inviting but also hard to put down. Billed as "user-friendly for people of all....

The dissociation of PH3 from the 18-electron system CpMoX(PH3)3 to afford the corresponding 16-electron CpMoX(PH3)2 fragment has been investigated theoretically by density functional theory for X = H, CH3, F, Cl, Br, I, OH, and PH2. The product is found to prefer a triplet spin state for all X ligands except PH2, the singlet-triplet gap varying between 1.7 kcal/mol for OH to 8.7 kcal/mol for F. The Mo-PH3 bond dissociation energy to the 16-electron ground state varies dramatically across the series, from 4.5 kcal/mol for OH to 23.5 kcal/mol for H, and correlates with experimental observations on trisubstituted phosphine derivatives. …

Superflares On Ordinary Solar-Type Stars, Bradley E. Schaefer, Jeremy R. King, Constantine P. Deliyannis Feb 2000

Superflares On Ordinary Solar-Type Stars, Bradley E. Schaefer, Jeremy R. King, Constantine P. Deliyannis

Faculty Publications

Short-duration flares are well known to occur on cool main-sequence stars as well as on many types of "exotic" stars. Ordinary main-sequence stars are usually pictured as being static on timescales of millions or billions of years. Our Sun has occasional flares involving up to ∼1031 ergs that produce optical brightenings too small in amplitude to be detected in disk-integrated brightness. However, we identify nine cases of superflares involving 1033-1038 ergs on normal solar-type stars. That is, these stars are on or near the main sequence, are of spectral class F8-G8, are single (or in very wide binaries), are not …

Adaptive Mesh Refinement Approach To The Construction Of Initial Data For Black Hole Collisions, Peter Diener, Nina Jansen, Alexei Khokhlov, Igor Novikov Jan 2000

Adaptive Mesh Refinement Approach To The Construction Of Initial Data For Black Hole Collisions, Peter Diener, Nina Jansen, Alexei Khokhlov, Igor Novikov

Faculty Publications

The initial data for black hole collisions are constructed using a conformal-imaging approach and a new adaptive mesh refinement technique, a fully threaded tree (FTT). We developed a second-order accurate approach to the solution of the constraint equations on a non-uniformly refined high-resolution Cartesian mesh including second-order accurate treatment of boundary conditions at the black hole throats. FTT-based mesh refinement reduced memory and computer time requirements by several orders of magnitude compared to a uniform grid and allowed the construction of accurate initial data sets on Cartesian meshes. Test computations show quadratic convergence of the solutions with increasing numerical resolution.

Faculty Publications

The photodegradation mechanism due to synchrotron radiation exposure of crystalline poly[vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroetylene, P(VDF-TrFE)] copolymer thin films has been studied with ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and mass spectroscopy. Upon increasing exposure to x-ray white light (hv≤ 1000eV), UPS measurements reveal that substantial chemical modifications occur in P(VDF-TrFE) 5 monolayer films, including the emergence of new valence band features near the Fermi level, indicating a semimetallic photodegradeted product. The photodetached fragments of the copolymer consist mainly of H2, HF, CHF, CH2. This x-ray exposure study demonstrates that P(VDF-TrFE) films, possessing unique technologically important properties, can be directly patterned by x-ray lithographic processes. …

Composition And Method For Chiral Separations, William H. Daly, Drew S. Poche, Stefan J. Thibodeaux, Isiah M. Warner

College of Science Patents

Polymers are disclosed that are useful in performing chiral separations. A synthetic scheme for producing the novel polymers is also disclosed. The alkyl side chains of poly(γ-alkyl-α,L-glutamates) have been altered, allowing the facile substitution of the side chains with pendent functional groups. The compounds may be used as a stationary-phase or pseudo-stationary phase in separation techniques such as high performance liquid chromatography, or electrokinetic capillary chromatography. The novel compounds are water-soluble or water-swellable, and are particularly useful in separations of stereoisomers.

Locus Of Control, Religious Values, Work Values And Social Policy Choices., Carolyn Kasprzak Falkowski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Individuals' religious beliefs were examined in terms of their effect on one's positions on various social issues. Beliefs regarding salvation were chosen as beliefs central to a Christian faith. Locus of control and Protestant work ethic were included as related concepts. A sample of Christian (primarily Protestant) seminary students was selected in this study in order to include individuals who are more likely to have actively considered both their theology and their beliefs on social policies. Most of the seminarians expressed a significantly internal locus of control and some acceptance of the concepts included in the Protestant work ethic. Most …

Extending The Revelation Effect To Faces: Haven't We Met Before?, Jeffrey Roy Wilson Jan 2000

Extending The Revelation Effect To Faces: Haven't We Met Before?, Jeffrey Roy Wilson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The revelation effect is an episodic memory phenomenon where participants are more likely to report that they recognize an item when it has been revealed in some way than when it has not. Although this effect is robust with respect to words, it has not been demonstrated with faces. The present series of experiments examined whether a revelation effect could be produced in face recognition memory. A revelation effect was found in 2 of 3 experiments using only faces for stimuli. Surprisingly, an anti-revelation effect was found in Experiment 4 when words were revealed before face recognition. The findings are …

Linking Postsecondary Sub -Baccalaureate Institutional Experience To The Career Planning Needs Of Future Workforce., Joycelyn Harrison Brunswick

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent changes in the labor market and predictions by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that many of the jobs available in the 21st century will not require a four-year college degree, in contrast to what many high school students perceive will provide their entree to a successful career. Jobs which will be in demand necessitate highly specialized skills which can be developed at post-secondary sub-baccalaureate (PSSB) institutions. High school graduates who do not have the ability, time, money or inclination to earn a bachelor's degree may well obtain economic security by acquiring those skills in great demand, enabling them …

Classically Unstable Approximations For Linear Evolution Equations And Applications., Yu Zhuang Jan 2000

Classically Unstable Approximations For Linear Evolution Equations And Applications., Yu Zhuang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Temporal discretization methods for evolutionary differential equations that factorize the resolvent into a product of easily computable operators have great numerical appeal. For instance, the alternating direction implicit (ADI) method of Peaceman-Rachford for 2-D parabolic problems greatly reduces the simulation time when compared with the Crank-Nicolson scheme. However, just like many other factorized approximation methods that exhibit numerical stability, the ADI method is known to satisfy only the Von Neumann stability condition, a necessary condition that is usually surmised as sufficient in practical cases as pointed out by Lax and Richtmyer. Intensive efforts have been directed to understand the Von …

Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim Jan 2000

Extended Topics In The Integration Of Data Envelopment Analysis And The Analytic Hierarchy Process In Decision Making., Tae-Sung Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a procedure, which can only consider relative priorities as estimated by decision-makers. A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is a data-oriented approach for evaluating the relative efficiency of a group of entities referred to as Decision Making Units (DMUs). This research work integrates and combines positive aspects of AHP's estimated qualitative data and DEA's quantitative data. This combination is accomplished by specifying two variants of the DEA methodology for selection of the best DMU. Initially the priority weights of AHP are integrated with the DEA methodology to provide results that are logic based. Next, …

Functional Microanatomy Of The Feather-Bearing Integument: Implications For The Evolution Of Birds And Avian Flight, Dominique G. Homberger, Kumudini N.D.E. Silva Jan 2000

Functional Microanatomy Of The Feather-Bearing Integument: Implications For The Evolution Of Birds And Avian Flight, Dominique G. Homberger, Kumudini N.D.E. Silva

Faculty Publications

A selective regime favoring a streamlining of body contours and surfaces is proposed as having been instrumental in driving the morphological and functional transformations of an unfeathered reptilian integument into a featherbearing avian one. This hypothesis is consistent with a new, structurally and functionally coherent analysis of the microanatomy of the avian feather-bearing integument as a complex, integrated organ system that includes an intricate, hydraulic skeleto-muscular apparatus of the feathers, a dermo-subcutaneous muscle system of the integument, and a subcutaneous hydraulic skeletal system formed by fat bodies. Key elements of the evidence supporting the new hypothesis are (1) the presence …
