The X-ray nova XTE J1118 + 480 suffers minimal extinction (b = 62°) and therefore represents an outstanding opportunity for multiwavelength studies. Hynes et al. conducted the first such study, which was centered on 2000 April 8 using UKIRT, EUVE, HST, and RXTE. On 2000 April 18, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory obtained data coincident with a second set of observations using all of these same observatories. A 30 ks grating observation using Chandra yielded a spectrum with high resolution and sensitivity covering the range 0.24-7 keV. Our near-simultaneous observations cover ≈ 80% of the electromagnetic spectrum from the infrared to …

We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the soft X-ray transient XTE J2123-058 in outburst. A useful spectral coverage of 3700-6700 Å was achieved spanning two orbits of the binary, with single-epoch coverage extending to ∼-9000 Å. The optical spectrum approximates a steep blue power law, consistent with emission on the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of a hot blackbody spectrum. The strongest spectral lines are He II 4686 Å and C III/N III 4640 Å (Bowen blend) in emission. Their relative strengths suggest that XTE J2123-058 was formed in the Galactic plane, not in the halo. Other weak emission lines of He II and …

We have measured the periods and light curves of 148 RR Lyrae variables from V = 13.5 to 19.7 from the first 100 deg2 of the Quasar Equatorial Survey Team RR Lyrae survey. Approximately 55% of these stars belong to the clump of stars detected earlier by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. According to our measurements, this feature has ∼10 times the background density of halo stars, spans at least 37.°5 by 3.°5 in α and δ (≥30 by >3 kpc), lies ∼50 kpc from the Sun, and has a depth along the line of sight of ∼5 kpc (1 …

It is becoming increasingly clear that the way in which a conjugated polymer film is cast affects the interactions between polymer chains and thus the optical and electrical properties of the film. Given that conjugated polymer films cast in different ways also show different nanometer-scale surface topographies, the question that arises is: What is the correlation between surface topography, local chain packing, and the local electronic properties of a conjugated polymer film? In this paper, we address this question using fluorescence near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) to examine films of poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) that were prepared in different ways. The …

An analysis of 8 Alu insertion loci (ACE, TPA25, PV92, APO, FXIIIB, D1, A25, B65) has been carried out in six populations from the Caucasus, including Indo-European-speaking Armenians; Altaic-speaking Azerbaijanians; North Caucasian-speaking Cherkessians, Darginians, and Ingushians; and South Caucasian (Kartvelian)-speaking Georgians. The Caucasus populations exhibit low levels of within-population variation and high levels of between-population differentiation, with the average Fst value for the Caucasus of 0.113, which is almost as large as the Fst value of 0.157 for worldwide populations. Maximum likelihood tree and principal coordinate analyses both group the Caucasus populations with European populations. Neither geographic nor linguistic relationships …

Investigation Of Heat Transfer Enhancement In Conceptual Two-Pass Channels For Gas Turbine Internal Cooling, Gautam Pamula
Investigation Of Heat Transfer Enhancement In Conceptual Two-Pass Channels For Gas Turbine Internal Cooling, Gautam Pamula
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Modern gas turbines operate at high inlet temperatures due to which various components undergo severe thermal and mechanical stresses and fatigue. Suitable materials for withstanding such severe conditions are not available or are too expensive to manufacture. As a consequence, components need to be cooled to sustainable temperatures and efficient cooling strategies need to be developed. This study presents new internal cooling designs for turbine blades that eliminate the need for rib turbulators in internal passages producing significantly higher heat transfer enhancements. Detailed local heat transfer coefficient data of the proposed new designs (swirl generation using tangentially injected coolant from …

Group I Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors Are Expressed In The Chicken Retina And By Cultured Retinal Amacrine Cells, Kathryn M. Kreimborg, Martha L. Lester, Kathryn F. Medler, Evanna L. Gleason

Glutamate is well established as an excitatory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate retina. Its role as a modulator of retinal function, however, is poorly understood. We used immunocytochemistry and calcium imaging techniques to investigate whether metabotropic glutamate receptors are expressed in the chicken retina and by identified GABAergic amacrine cells in culture. Antibody labeling for both metabotropic glutamate receptors 1 and 5 in the retina was consistent with their expression by amacrine cells as well as by other retinal cell types. In double-labeling experiments, most metabotropic glutamate receptor 1-positive cell bodies in the inner nuclear layer also label with anti-GABA antibodies. …
