Spaced-Retrieval Effects On Name-Face Recognition In Older Adults With Probable Alzheimer's Disease, Karri Sikes Hawley Jan 2002

Spaced-Retrieval Effects On Name-Face Recognition In Older Adults With Probable Alzheimer's Disease, Karri Sikes Hawley

LSU Master's Theses

Six older adults with probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) were trained to recall a name-face association using the spaced-retrieval method. We administered six training sessions over a two-week period. On each trial, participants selected a target photograph and stated the target name, from eight other photographs, at increasingly longer retention intervals. Results yielded a positive effect of spaced-retrieval training for name-face recognition. All participants were able to select the target photograph and state the target’s name for longer periods of time within and across training sessions. A live person transfer task was administered to determine whether the name-face association, trained by …

An Economic Analysis Of Pre-Harvesting Marketing Strategies And Financial Performance, Manuel Duarte Filipe Jan 2002

An Economic Analysis Of Pre-Harvesting Marketing Strategies And Financial Performance, Manuel Duarte Filipe

LSU Master's Theses

Risk is an important concern in the management of a farm business. The rising input prices along with the variability in the farm commodity prices may result in a risk environment. Government programs have generally provided income support to farmers. However, there has been considerable discussion regarding this support in recent years. The farm act of 2002 and farm bill of 1999 are good examples of such discussions. These uncertainties emphasize the need to improve information for farm's income risk management, and make some one ask if there is not out there any alternative way of managing income risk besides …

Characterization Of The Lower Atoka Formation, Arkoma Basin, Central Arkansas, Kelly R. Lagrange Jan 2002

Characterization Of The Lower Atoka Formation, Arkoma Basin, Central Arkansas, Kelly R. Lagrange

LSU Master's Theses

The Carboniferous Lower Atoka outcrops in the Arkoma Basin of Central Arkansas contain turbidite deposits in a channelized and unchannelized submarine fan setting. The objectives of the study were to determine depositional characteristics and reservoir performance of these fine-grained submarine fan deposits. Four outcrops (Highway 5, Perryville, Chula, and Danville) were studied and described in detail emphasizing sedimentary facies, vertical succession of beds, sedimentary structures, and other small-scaled features that cannot be resolved in subsurface deposits. Five distinct sedimentary facies were recognized: Facies A - massive sandstones, Facies B - thin-bedded sandstones with a mudstone drape, Facies C - interbedded …

Reproductive Biology Of Smooth Cordgrass (Spartina Alterniflora), Xiaobing Fang Jan 2002

Reproductive Biology Of Smooth Cordgrass (Spartina Alterniflora), Xiaobing Fang

LSU Master's Theses

Smooth cordgrass (S. alterniflora) is a perennial grass that dominates the salt marsh in tidal wetlands along the Atlantic and Gulf Coast of North America and has been used for preventing soil erosion and restoring wetlands. Accessions collected from south Louisiana were studied to investigate flowering phenology, pollen viability, crossability, and seed production. S. alterniflora exhibited protogynous flowering where stigmas exserted 2 to 5 days from the floret prior to anthesis. Pollen shed primarily between 8:00 and 10:00 AM. Pollens were viable with average germination of 69% and stigma was receptive after exsertion. Pollen germinated in 15 minutes and pollen …

An Integrated Approach To Stormwater Management In The Coastal Zone, Clotho Alexis Spinner Jan 2002

An Integrated Approach To Stormwater Management In The Coastal Zone, Clotho Alexis Spinner

LSU Master's Theses

Undeveloped lands are inherently capable of handling the precipitation rates and severe storm events of a given area. As our communities continue to grow and expand, the stormwater management capabilities of an area’s natural systems will be impacted. Without thoughtful intervention, existing natural systems will be overwhelmed to the point of dysfunction, an unfortunate circumstance that has been the case in some of this country’s more urbanized areas. The main objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the process of applying an integrated greenway stormwater management system as an alternative approach to managing the present and future stormwater needs of …

Culinary Confusion: Using Osteological And Stable Isotopic Evidence To Reconstruct Paleodiet For The Ocmulgee/Blackshear Cordmarked People Of South Central Georgia, Bryan D. Tucker Jan 2002

Culinary Confusion: Using Osteological And Stable Isotopic Evidence To Reconstruct Paleodiet For The Ocmulgee/Blackshear Cordmarked People Of South Central Georgia, Bryan D. Tucker

LSU Master's Theses

The Ocmulgee Big Bend and Lake Blackshear regions of Georgia have diverse uplands and lowlands, rich in different types of food. Archaeological investigations have shown Late Woodland-style ceramics and artifacts extending up to the Middle Mississippian Period in these regions. Archaeologists have proposed the people of this region did not adopt maize agriculture or a Mississippian subsistence or cultural pattern during the Early Mississippian Period. This study tests this hypothesis with osteological and isotopic data from burials recovered from the Cannon site (9Cp52) and osteological data from the Telfair Mound site (9Tf2). Isotopic data demonstrate clearly that these people were …

The Origin Of Peruvian Professional Militarism, Mariella Reano Jan 2002

The Origin Of Peruvian Professional Militarism, Mariella Reano

LSU Master's Theses

The process of professionalization initiated by the Peruvian army in 1896 under French influence did not withdraw the military from political involvement. On the contrary, as the process of professionalization advanced, the army developed a “professional militarism,” that is, military political participation for reasons based on the institution’s professional ethos. The Peruvian army had traditionally claimed a broad military jurisdiction including extra-military roles. French instructors reinforced such claimed incorporating a broad military jurisdiction into the army’s professional ethos, which justified military coups during the twentieth-century as well as the Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces (1968-1980). Historians Frederick M. Nunn …

Reliability Of Wavelet Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability During Rest And Exercise, Deborah Jean Stone Jan 2002

Reliability Of Wavelet Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability During Rest And Exercise, Deborah Jean Stone

LSU Master's Theses

The reliability of wavelet analysis (DWT), of heart rate variability during rest and exercise was examined for this study. All twenty-three participants visited the lab on two separate occasions no less than four weeks apart. All twenty-three participants were subjected to the spontaneous breathing (SB1), and HG60 exercise condition. Of those twenty-three participants, nine performed the HG20 exercise condition as well. It was found that during the SB1 condition, the R-R intervals were fairly reliable between days. However, the reliability of all the HRV parameters (SDNN, spectral components and wavelet components) were quite poor. Interestingly, however, during HG20, the reliability …

The Role Of Personal Characteristics In International Mediations, Joshua Paul Galliano Jan 2002

The Role Of Personal Characteristics In International Mediations, Joshua Paul Galliano

LSU Master's Theses

This paper presents research on the influence of psychological factors on the outcome of mediation attempts. The research utilizes a base-line model as proposed by Bercovitch, where mediator strategy and mediation outcome result from antecedent contextual inputs and the current mediation process. In addition to these established factors, relevant psychological variables are tested through the Med97 dataset. The case list consists of mediation attempts determined by the involvement of a single mediator and a single negotiator for each side, which allows for the investigation of the effects of the mediator’s and the negotiator’s psychological characteristics. The psychological characteristics investigated in …

Water-Drive Gas Reservoir: Sensitivity Analysis And Simplified Prediction, Junpeng Yue Jan 2002

Water-Drive Gas Reservoir: Sensitivity Analysis And Simplified Prediction, Junpeng Yue

LSU Master's Theses

Water influx and well completions affect recovery from water-drive gas reservoir. Material balance, aquifer models and well inflow equations are used to examine and predict the pressure depletion, water influx, and production rates of water-drive gas reservoirs. The parameters of these simple, lumped models are estimated from simulation results using response surfaces and experimental designs for eight varying geologic and engineering factors. Eleven simulated responses (including maximum gas rate, aquifer and well constants, and water breakthrough) are analyzed using ANOVA and response models. A sensitivity analysis of aquifer productivity index, gas production factor, and sweep efficiency reveals that permeability is …

Liminal Recollection...Between Memory And Reality, Blake Jamison Williams Jan 2002

Liminal Recollection...Between Memory And Reality, Blake Jamison Williams

LSU Master's Theses

In the year I applied to graduate school, the objects in my life acquired a distinct preciousness after my grandparents passed away within three months of each other. I realized that the things we collect, and those that surround us, reveal our narratives and silently map our personalities. I discovered that material items triggered memories for me specific to their function and relationship to me. My grandmother’s set of ten figurines reminded me of the many times we would sit and drink tea together. I became acutely aware of material items that were results of human actions. A used teabag …

These Things Add Up, Sara C. Hopp Jan 2002

These Things Add Up, Sara C. Hopp

LSU Master's Theses

These Things Add Up explores thoughts about time, accumulation and evidence. As time passes, there is a constant accumulation of tangible and non-tangible information which must be processed. Moments, conversations, thoughts, observations and sensations all contribute to this saturation of information and the creation of a layered space and time. Information which is consciously or unconsciously selected for notice becomes evidence of identity and personal history. In this same process, memory and the anticipation of the future are incorporated into the present.

Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr

LSU Master's Theses

Nearly 35,000 ha are used to grow crawfish in southwest and south-central Louisiana, and many of these ponds discharge into impaired water bodies. In 2002, proposed guidelines were published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) assigning effluent limitations and standards for some aquaculture production systems and exempting others (e.g. crawfish ponds). This research had three objectives relative to crawfish ponds: develop water discharge models; final drawdown effluent quality and seasonal mass loading of solids and nutrients; and identification of Best Management Practices (BMPs) that could reduce effluent discharge and improve effluent quality. Models for south-central and southwest Louisiana …

LSU Master's Theses

This study was designed to characterize changes in the content of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and cellular permeability of gastric and jejunal mucosa during gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Our hypothesis stated that experimental GDV would result in a decrease in ATP content and cellular integrity of the gastric and intestinal mucosa that may improve after decompression and derotation of the stomach. Fifteen medium-to-large mixed-breed male dogs were randomly divided into three groups: GDV dogs, Ischemia dogs and Control dogs. All dogs were maintained on gas anesthesia for 210 minutes. The GDV dogs had a GDV for 120 minutes with a 90-minute period …

Influence Of Locus Of Control On Court Attendance, Anna Cutlip Jan 2002

Influence Of Locus Of Control On Court Attendance, Anna Cutlip

LSU Master's Theses

The aim of the present study was to discover whether there is a relationship between locus of control and court attendance. Data were collected from 95 inmates residing in a southern Louisiana jail. It was expected that a person with an internal locus of control would choose to comply with court attendance requirements because of the belief that he may affect the outcome, while another individual with an external locus of control would passively respond through absence because the outcome is believed to be controlled by chance, luck, or fate. The Prison Locus of Control scale was employed to measure …

Chronophobia: Doing Time, Rosemary Stoltz Hill Jan 2002

Chronophobia: Doing Time, Rosemary Stoltz Hill

LSU Master's Theses

Chronophobia is the fear of time—characterized by panic, anxiety, and claustrophobia. Also known as prison neurosis, it may be the most common anxiety disorder in prison inmates. Sooner or later, almost all prisoners suffer chronophobia to some degree and become terrified by the duration and immensity of time. This is often called going “stir crazy.” The work in this installation subjectively explores interpretations of the passage of time through various multimedia experiences. Interactivity is a key feature of several installation components. There is also limited use of traditional print media graphics. References to time in music, literature and film are …

"You Go Girl!" Nationalism And Women's Empowerment In The Bollywood Film Kya Kehna, Hope Marie Childers Jan 2002

"You Go Girl!" Nationalism And Women's Empowerment In The Bollywood Film Kya Kehna, Hope Marie Childers

LSU Master's Theses

This essay puts forth an analysis of the recent portrayal of an unwed mother in the Bollywood film, Kya Kehna! (Kundan Shah, 2000, henceforth KK). The title, which is readily translated to the rhetorical, "What can you say?" has additional significance here as a laudatory exclamation directed at the film's young heroine. Targeting a younger audience, the film was hailed as a challenging exploration of female sexuality and women's empowerment. The film in fact reaffirms traditional stereotypes of women in which their behavior is carefully controlled within a patriarchal framework. In spite of the awkward fact that the main character's …

Idego, Christopher Michael Stanley Jan 2002

Idego, Christopher Michael Stanley

LSU Master's Theses

My thesis show is sort of a mock manifesto on the ephemeral making of art, especially my art. Automatic drawing and collage are major themes and redundencies that continue to find their way into what I do. I will show the dualities between what is past and what is present hoping to find the integral ingredient that caused the past to be present. I will make the viewer question what he or she believes in. We all know that the reason for the present is because of the events in the past, but do the events of the past hold …

Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of The Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene El Molino Formation, Eastern Cordillera And Altiplano, Central Andes, Bolivia: Implications For The Tectonic Development Of The Central Andes, Richard John Fink

LSU Master's Theses

The Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene El Molino Formation of the Bolivian Central Andes consists of mixed siliciclastic and carbonate strata alternately interpreted as syn-rift, post-rift thermal sag and foreland basin deposits. These deposits can be divided into two lithostratigraphic sequences. The first sequence consists of a carbonate, carbonate sand and mudrock lower member, a middle member consisting entirely of mudrock and an upper member containing carbonates and mudrocks. The second lithostratigraphic sequence contains a lower member composed of carbonate sands, carbonates and mudrocks, and an upper member consisting of a coarsening upwards sequence of sandstones and mudrocks. Within these lithostratigraphic sequences, five …

Transverse (Harris) Lines In The Tibiae Of A Prehistoric Costa Rican Population, Kelly E. Gillis Jan 2002

Transverse (Harris) Lines In The Tibiae Of A Prehistoric Costa Rican Population, Kelly E. Gillis

LSU Master's Theses

Transverse (Harris) lines are lines of opacity that extend across the medullary cavity in long bones; they are sometimes are also found in irregular bones. Predominantly, Harris lines are seen in radiographs of the tibiae. Many scholars believe that these lines of opacity are caused by nutritional interruptions during growth, while others believe these lines to be indicators of stress recovery, rather than interruption. This study examines the incidence of transverse lines in a Pre-Columbian Costa Rican population, called Vidor, located on the northwest Bay of Culebra. The burials of this population, originally excavated in 1977, contained more than 40 …
