Design Of Power Efficient Multicast Algorithms For Sparse Split Wdm Networks, Kavitha Devi Buddharaju

LSU Master's Theses

Recent years witnessed tremendous increase in data traffic as new Internet applications were launched. Optical networks employing recent technologies such as DWDM and EDFA`s emerged as the most prominent and most promising solutions in terms of their ability to keep with the demand on bandwidth. However for a class of applications bandwidth is not the only important requirement, These applications require efficient multicast operations. They include data bases, audio/video conferencing, distributed computing etc. Multicasting in the optical domain however has its own unique set of problems. First, an optical signal can be split among the outputs of a node but …

Mathematical Modeling Analysis Of Floating Bead Biofilter Applications To Domestic Wastewater Treatment, Qiang Wu Jan 2003

Mathematical Modeling Analysis Of Floating Bead Biofilter Applications To Domestic Wastewater Treatment, Qiang Wu

LSU Master's Theses

Floating Bead Biofilters (FBFs) have been applied to aquacultural recirculating tanks and domestic wastewater treatment systems for controlling total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS). Support modified media in these FBFs provide a large surface area (1150~1475 m2/m3) so that the active biofilm can be retained in the FBF by attaching to the media surface. Understanding the theories involved in biofilm processes greatly helps in sizing, designing, and modeling of FBF systems. Fundamental biofilm processes like mass transport of various substrates into the biofilm and the substrate utilization within the biofilm were studied. A …

Optimizing Aconitate Removal During Clarification, Niconor Nocony Reece Jan 2003

Optimizing Aconitate Removal During Clarification, Niconor Nocony Reece

LSU Master's Theses

The inadequate removal of aconitic acid from sugar cane juice during the clarification process results in the acid contributing to processing difficulties, sucrose loss and extended down time. However, very few attempts have been made to remove the acid during normal factory operations. Batch clarification techniques were used in this study to investigate the effect of sucrose concentration, temperature, pH, time, defecant, and defecant concentration on aconitic acid removal from a synthetic juice solution. Methodology for determining the significance of each parameter to aconitic acid removal involved setting up a multiple factorial experiment looking at aconitic acid removal across all …

Street Fighting: Lessons Learned From The Battle For Hue For 21st Century Urban Warfare, Edward J. O'Neill

LSU Master's Theses

Increasing urbanization in a global setting of political and economic instability indicates that urban warfare may well be the major conflict scenario of the 21st century. The United States armed forces are not currently prepared to meet that challenge. The last major urban conflict involving the American military was the Battle of Hue during the Vietnam War. As part of the Tet Offensive in 1968, Communist forces seized control of Hue and held it for nearly a month. Having undergone intensive tactical training for their mission, the enemy, solidly entrenched in buildings of various kinds, offered fierce resistance to the …

The primary objective of the MOBILE models is to develop emission inventories in compliance with EPA’s regulations. The research reported in this study is primarily a proof-of-concept study of the feasibility of the Global Positioning System (GPS) to supply vehicle activity data to MOBILE6. However, it also deals with identifying vehicle registration input to MOBILE6 using non-GPS sources. Input …

Sustainable Agriculture And The Red Stick Farmers' Market: An Exploration Of The Use Of Concept In Design, Lawrence Christopher Campany Jan 2003

Sustainable Agriculture And The Red Stick Farmers' Market: An Exploration Of The Use Of Concept In Design, Lawrence Christopher Campany

LSU Master's Theses

This is a treatise on an attempt to translate a concept -- the driving principle of a design in the parlance of the design studios at the Louisiana State University School of Landscape Architecture -- into practice, form and function. If form follows function, as states the oft quoted proverb of design credited to Louis Sullivan, then perhaps as much attention should be given to the design of the function as the form. What this treatise will demonstrate is that function designed around a concept can result in physical manifestations, or forms, of that concept. In this case a concept …

Field Grown Cut Flower Production In Southern Louisiana, John Burke, Jr. Young Jan 2003

Field Grown Cut Flower Production In Southern Louisiana, John Burke, Jr. Young

LSU Master's Theses

Specialty cut flowers are nontraditional cut flowers used primarily in floral arrangements. Most specialty cut flowers are grown in an open field and production is dependent on a combination of climactic factors, which in turn affects the number of days to harvest and yield. Scheduled plantings of Celosia argentea var. cristata L., Helianthus annuus L., Zinnia elegans Jacq., and Gladiolus X hortulanus L. H. Bailey were conducted to determine the effect of time on the number of days to harvest and yield. Plants were grown in an open field from February to August in 2001 and 2002. Days to harvest …

Modeling And Evaluating Evacuation Contraflow Termination Point Designs, Yu Yik Lim Jan 2003

Modeling And Evaluating Evacuation Contraflow Termination Point Designs, Yu Yik Lim

LSU Master's Theses

Prior studies showed that most evacuation contraflow designs have never been implemented. As a result, the effectiveness of these contraflow termination point designs remains unknown. To address this problem, a microscopic traffic simulation tool, CORSIM 5.0, was used. Ten simulation models were conducted and determined the factors that affect traffic operations in the vicinity of the various planned contraflow termination point with median crossover designs. The performance of various models was ranked by statistical test in terms of the total number of vehicles processed, traffic flow, speed, density and delay. The results that were based on theoretical simulations and assumptions …

Precipitate Growth Features In The Duplex Size Gamma Prime Distribution In The Superalloy In738lc, Indranil Roy

LSU Master's Theses

IN738LC is a modern, nickel base superalloy utilized at high temperatures in aggressive environments. Durability of this superalloy is dependent on the retention of strengthening by Gamma Prime precipitates. The precipitate growth features in the duplex size (fine and coarse) precipitate distribution was studied by heating the alloy for various times in vacuum at selected temperatures in the range 800 °C to 1100 °C. Increasing the holding times from 1 hour to 100 hours shows joining of the fine particles to form bigger particles, leading to distinct raft patterns. Two different Gamma Prime precipitate growth processes had been observed: merging …

Treatment Of Mixtures Of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (Mek) And Toluene Using Continuous And Sequencing Batch Operated Biofilters, Jorge C. Atoche

LSU Master's Theses

During the past decade, biofiltration has increasingly been applied as an air pollution control technology to minimize or eliminate emissions of volatile organic compounds from industrial sources. Although of the ability of this technology to maintain high removal efficiency during relatively steady conditions has been well established for many waste streams, a limitation of this technology has been its inability to maintain high removal efficiency during transient loading conditions typical of industrial operations. In the research described herein, a conventional continuous-flow biofilter (CFB) and a sequencing batch biofilter (SBB) were operated for more than 295 days to treat a model …

Reducing Phosphorus Runoff Using Poultry Litter Derived From Phytase-Amended Diets, Anserd Julius Foster Jan 2003

Reducing Phosphorus Runoff Using Poultry Litter Derived From Phytase-Amended Diets, Anserd Julius Foster

LSU Master's Theses

Surface-applied poultry litter generated using a phytase-amended diet may release less phosphorus (P) to runoff water than does litter from a conventional diet. The release of soluble reactive (SRP) and total dissolved P (TDP) from litter generated under conventional and phytase-amended diets was examined in three studies: 1) batch desorption, 2) flow-through cell, and 3) field micro-plot. In Study 1, samples of litter (10 from conventional, C, and 20 from phytase-amended, A, diets) were extracted with water at litter: water ratios from 1:5 to 1:200. Phosphorus in A litter was significantly less at the 1:10 extraction ratio; however, there was …

A Screening Assessment Of Solidification/Stabilization For Storm Water Residuals, Erin Ezell Krielow Jan 2003

A Screening Assessment Of Solidification/Stabilization For Storm Water Residuals, Erin Ezell Krielow

LSU Master's Theses

Metal species infused particulate matter associated with urban rainfall-runoff is a unique and profuse source of pollution. Generated from urban activities, such as traffic activity and vehicular/infrastructure abrasion, contaminated residual material is deposited to roadways during dry weather and transported to surrounding environments and/or best management practice (BMP) treatment facilities during wet-weather events. These particulates range in size from 1 ƒÝm to 10000 ƒÝm and are contaminated with metal species that originate from such sources as vehicular body wear (Cu), tire wear (Zn), and brake dust (Pb). Depending on the efficiencies of the BMP treatment facilities, these containment systems have …

This was accomplished by subjecting them to four salinity regimes during a 97-h period with as long as 63 h acclimation. Salinity regimes represented salinities found along coastal Louisiana. Each variety was challenged individually against every other variety and thus in triplicate. All four varieties are commercially produced in the southeastern United States. The Florida red tilapia and Mississippi commercial tilapia are hybrid-based varieties (distinct …

Biomechanical Effects Of Cyclic Loading On The Lower Back, Lakiesha Claude Jan 2003

Biomechanical Effects Of Cyclic Loading On The Lower Back, Lakiesha Claude

LSU Master's Theses

More than 30 million people in the United States may have low back pain at any time, and 10 million of them have chronic symptoms. Epidemiological studies indicate that along with axial compressive loads, other factors including repetitive twisting or lateral bending and lifting are significant risk factors for low-back disorders. Literature repeatedly confirms that cyclic occupational functions expose workers to a 10-fold increase in episodes of low back injury and pain. This study examined the biomechanical effects of cyclical loading on the lower back. Twenty in vivo feline preparations were subjected to passive cyclic loading at 20 N (n=6), …

Swimming Performance Of Juvenile Florida Pompano (Trachinotus Carolinus) And Atlantic Spadefish (Chaetodipterus Faber) Exposed To Sublethal Concentrations Of Ethylene Glycol And Methanol: Individual And Synergistic Effects, Mark Alan Stead

LSU Master's Theses

Recently, new technology has pushed petrochemical exploration into increasingly deeper water (>305 m) at increased risks to marine fauna. One risk is from chemical additives used to enhance deepwater production such as ethylene glycol and methanol which are used during the production and treatment to prevent the formation of gas hydrates in deepwater wells and pipelines. Juvenile Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) were used in controlled experiments to test the effects of 3.0 % ethylene glycol (EG), 1.07 % methanol (MeOH) and a combination of the two chemicals(EG + MeOH) on swimming performance of individual fish. Swimming performance was evaluated …

The Rapid Template Fabrication Process For Producing A Liga Heat Exchanger Bonded To A Mechanical Seal, Jason Patrick Tuma Jan 2003

The Rapid Template Fabrication Process For Producing A Liga Heat Exchanger Bonded To A Mechanical Seal, Jason Patrick Tuma

LSU Master's Theses

Mechanical seals are widely used in the chemical processing, aerospace, and automotive, industries. When a mechanical seal fails, considerable cost is typically involved in replacing the seal. Most seal failures are a result of high temperatures generated by frictional heating. Effectively removing the heat generated would significantly increase the mechanical seal’s work life and lead to significant monetary savings. One method of removing the heat generated is bonding an effective LIGA micro heat exchanger to the mechanical seal and forcing coolant through the heat exchanger. Previous work on this subject revealed promising results, especially for micro heat exchangers with microstructures …

Eighteen normally developing and three at-risk AA three-year-old preschoolers participated in the study. Language samples were elicited from each child during a 15-20 minute play interaction. Three language sample analyses, contrastive analysis, average sentence length, and complex syntax use, were completed on each language sample. Also coded was each child’s use of nonmainstream African American English (AAE) patterns. Only the contrastive analysis generated reliable differences between the at-risk children and the normally developing children. Other group …

An Integrated Approach To Judicial Decision Making: The Death Penalty In South Africa, Stephenie E. Franks Jan 2003

An Integrated Approach To Judicial Decision Making: The Death Penalty In South Africa, Stephenie E. Franks

LSU Master's Theses

Existing judicial research has firmly established the role of the law and the courts in the political system of the United States. Yet very little systematic empirical research has been conducted to fully explore the extent to which theories of judicial behavior based upon the American judicial system are applicable to other legal systems. As a result, these theories lack generalizability and, moreover, have failed to determine if the U.S. judiciary is comparable to other court systems or simply an anomaly within a broader comparative framework. Given this void within the existing literature, this study extends several theories of judicial …

Minimization Of Power Losses In Active Magnetic Bearing Control, Nader Motee Jan 2003

Minimization Of Power Losses In Active Magnetic Bearing Control, Nader Motee

LSU Master's Theses

A solution to the problem of AMB control with reduced electrical power losses will be presented in this thesis. The proposed control solution will be founded on the integrator backstepping technique, which decouples the rotor stabilization problem from the bias flux design problem. It further allows for the easy redesign of the control law to compensate for uncertainties in the AMB system. A class of nonlinear controllers will be developed that reduces the AMB power losses in comparison to standard fixed-bias controllers, while containing no control singularity. Control laws will be presented for the standard AMB operating mode where both …

LSU Master's Theses

I am leading the viewer to experience a room full of sinful, sensual and guilty pleasures through a visual feast of sugary excess. I create a tactile environment of anticipation, desire and delight. Using sugary sweet colors, smooth curvaceous forms dressed with spikes, nipples, bumps and knobs, and objects of scale. The objective is to make the viewers salivate, confusing desire with need, leaving them to question, "What is temptation?" A visceral visual sugary landscape is created where food and vessel co-exist, each relying on the other to be complete and fulfilling.

"You Stupid, Lazy Kid": Perceptions Of Verbal Aggressiveness In Older Adults, Jon M. Croghan Jan 2003

"You Stupid, Lazy Kid": Perceptions Of Verbal Aggressiveness In Older Adults, Jon M. Croghan

LSU Master's Theses

Young adults' stereotypes of older adults has been well-documented in communication literature, however, there has been a lack of research on the impact of message strategy on intergenerational interactions. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among three factors that previous research suggests should influence the activation of stereotypes toward a target: age, relational level, and message strategy. This study examines the role that message strategy, in this case, verbal aggressiveness, plays in activating young adults' (n = 186) negative stereotypes of older adults. The young adults' self-reported levels of trait verbal aggressiveness was positively correlated with …
