LSU AgCenter Research Information Sheets
In recent years, there has been a dramatic growth in credit card usage among college students. How are Louisiana State University undergraduates using credit cards? Are LSU students managing credit card debt wisely? What can LSU do to offer the appropriate kinds of help to enable students to be financially literate? These are the issues addressed in this publication.

Scientific Collaboratories In Higher Education: Exploring Learning Style Preferences And Perceptions Of Technology, Diane H. Sonnenwald, Bin Li

Scientific collaboratories hold the promise of providing students access to specialized scientific instruments, data and experts, enabling learning opportunities perhaps otherwise not available. However, evaluation of scientific collaboratories in higher education has lagged behind their development. We conducted a repeated-measures study that provided data regarding social interaction learning styles and perceptions of a scientific collaboratory system from 40 university science students working face-to-face and remotely. Students with a strong competitive learning style preference or who worked with a student with a strong competitive learning style reported a slightly more positive perception of the relative advantage, compatibility and complexity of the …

Hardy Spaces For Non-Compactly Causal Symmetric Spaces And The Most Continuous Spectrum, Simon Gindikin, Bernhard Krötz, Gestur Ólafsson

Let G/H be a semisimple symmetric space. Then the space L2 (G/H) can be decomposed into a finite sum of series of representations induced from parabolic subgroups of G. The most continuous part of the spectrum of L 2 (G/H) is the part induced from the smallest possible parabolic subgroup. In this paper we introduce Hardy spaces canonically related to this part of the spectrum for a class of non-compactly causal symmetric spaces. The Hardy space is a reproducing Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on a bounded symmetric domain of tube type, containing G/H as a boundary component. A boundary …

Well Posed Constraint-Preserving Boundary Conditions For The Linearized Einstein Equations, Gioel Calabrese, Jorge Pullin, Oscar Reula, Olivier Sarbach, Manuel Tiglio

In this paper we address the problem of specifying boundary conditions for Einstein's equations when linearized around Minkowski space using the generalized Einstein-Christoffel symmetric hyperbolic system of evolution equations. The boundary conditions we work out guarantee that the constraints are satisfied provided they are satisfied on the initial slice and ensures a well posed initial-boundary value formulation. We consider the case of a manifold with a non-smooth boundary, as is the usual case of the cubic boxes commonly used in numerical relativity. The techniques discussed should be applicable to more general cases, as linearizations around more complicated backgrounds, and may …

Adipocyte lipid-binding protein (ALBP or aP2) is an intracellular fatty acid-binding protein that is found in adipocytes and macrophages and binds a large variety of intracellular lipids with high affinity. Although intracellular lipids are frequently charged, biochemical studies of lipid-binding proteins and their interactions often focus most heavily on the hydrophobic aspects of these proteins and their interactions. In this study, we have characterized the effects of KCl on the stability and lipid binding properties of ALBP. We find that added salt dramatically stabilizes ALBP, increasing its ΔG of unfolding by 3-5 kcal/mol. At 37 °C salt can more than …

The main result of this paper is that the domain-theoretic approach to the generalized Riemann integral first introduced by Edalat extends to a large class of spaces that can be realized as the set of maximal points of domains. The approach is based on the theory of a Riemann-Stieltjes type integral on a topological space with respect to a finitely additive measure. We develop the theory of this integral for a bounded function f defined on the maximal points of a continuous domain and show that it gives an alternate approach to the Edalat integral. © 2002 Elsevier B.V. GOES-8 satellite infrared (IR) measurements have been under-utilized in oceanographic research, although they provide several advantages over measurements from other sensors such as the NOAA AVHRR. Frequent coverage (48 times/day) over large regions, low noise in the mid- IR channel, and sole use of nighttime data have enabled the development of improved techniques for producing "de-clouded" images and calculating accurate SSTs (with RMS errors < 0.5°C), over cloudy and humid regions such as the Gulf of Mexico. Animations of SST composite images reveal movements of the Loop Current, its frontal eddies and coastal upwelling even during summer months. GOES-12 and future GOES imagers for the next decade are missing the 12 μm channel; however, this study demonstrates that the mid-IR channel is even more useful than previously thought.

Development And Evolution Of The Amniote Integument: Current Landscape And Future Horizon, Cheng Ming Chuong, Dominique G. Homberger
Faculty Publications
This special issue on the development and evolution of the amniote integument begins with a discussion of the adaptations to terrestrial conditions, the acquisition of water-impermeability by the reptilian integument, and the initial formation of filamentous integumentary appendages that pave the way towards avian flight. Recent feather fossils are reviewed and a definition of feathers is developed. Hierarchical models are proposed for the formation of complex structures, such as feathers. Molecular signals that alter the phenotype of integumentary appendages at different levels of the hierarchy are presented. Tissue interactions and the roles of keratins in evolution are discussed and linked …

The oxygen and sulfur isotope compositions of sulfate, particularly the oxygen-17 anomaly, provide clues to the origin of sulfate. We report a variable oxygen-17 anomaly for water- and acid-leached sulfate from an Oligocene volcanic ash bed in the northern High Plains, U.S.A. We find no sulfate O-17 anomaly, however, in freshly collected ashes from recent eruptions around the world. The Oligocene paleoclimatic and sedimentary evidence argues against a hyperarid condition in the High Plains, thus a long-term background atmospheric sulfate accumulation is less likely the origin. Combining sulfur isotope data, we suggest that the anomalous sulfate was associated with volcanic …

We consider the application of the 'consistent lattice quantum gravity' approach we introduced recently to the situation of a Friedmann cosmology and also to Bianchi cosmological models. This allows us to work out in detail the computations involved in the determination of the Lagrange multipliers that impose consistency of the discretized equations, and the implications of this determination. It also allows us to study the removal of the Big Bang singularity. Different discretizations can be achieved depending on the version of the classical theory chosen as a starting point and their relationships studied. We analyse in some detail how the …

The L1 Ta subfamily of long interspersed elements (LINEs) consists exclusively of human-specific L1 elements. Polymerase chain reaction-based screening in nonhuman primate genomes of the orthologous sites for 249 human L1 Ta elements resulted in the recovery of various types of sequence variants for approximately 12% of these loci. Sequence analysis was employed to capture the nature of the observed variation and to determine the levels of gene conversion and insertion site homoplasy associated with LINE elements. Half of the orthologous loci differed from the predicted sizes due to localized sequence variants that occurred as a result of common mutational …

A comprehensive analysis of two Alu Y lineage subfamilies was undertaken to assess Alu-associated genomic diversity and identify new Alu insertion polymorphisms for the study of human population genetics. Recently integrated Alu elements (283) from the Yg6 and Yi6 subfamilies were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and 25 of the loci analyzed were polymorphic for insertion presence/absence within the genomes of a diverse array of human populations. These newly identified Alu insertion polymorphisms will be useful tools for the study of human genomic diversity. Our screening of the Alu insertion loci also resulted in the recovery of several "young" …
