Transitioning From Regular Electrolytes To Solvate Ionic Liquids To High-Concentration Electrolytes: Changes In Transport Properties And Ionic Speciation, Ernest O. Nachaki, Daniel G. Kuroda Jan 2024

Transitioning From Regular Electrolytes To Solvate Ionic Liquids To High-Concentration Electrolytes: Changes In Transport Properties And Ionic Speciation, Ernest O. Nachaki, Daniel G. Kuroda

Faculty Publications

Glyme-based lithium-ion electrolytes have received considerable attention from the scientific community due to their improved safety, as well as electrochemical and thermal stability over carbonate-based electrolytes. However, these electrolytes suffer from major drawbacks such as high viscosities. To overcome the challenges that hinder their full potential, the molecular description of glyme-based lithium electrolytes in the high-concentration regime, particularly in the solvate ionic liquid (SIL) and high-concentration electrolyte (HCE) regimes, is needed. In this study, model glyme-based electrolytes based on a lithium thiocyanate and either tetraglyme (G4) or a mixture of monoglyme (G1) and diglyme (G2) were investigated as a function …

We report the biochemical, structural, and functional characterization of the protein coded by gene PA4880 in the P. aeruginosa PAO1 genome. The PA4880 gene had been annotated as coding a probable bacterioferritin. Our structural work shows that the product of gene PA4880 is a protein that adopts the Dps subunit fold, which oligomerizes into a 12-mer quaternary structure. Unlike Dps, however, the ferroxidase di-iron centers and iron coordinating ligands are buried within each subunit, in a manner identical to that observed in the ferroxidase center of P. aeruginosa bacterioferritin. Since these structural characteristics correspond to Dps-like proteins, we term the …

Monoterpenes and meroterpenes are two large classes of isoprene-based molecules produced by terrestrial plants and unicellular organisms as diverse secondary metabolites. The global rising incidence of cancer has led to a renewed interest in natural products. These monoterpenes and meroterpenes represent a novel source of molecular scaffolds that can serve as medicinal chemistry platforms for the development of potential preclinical leads. Furthermore, some of these natural products are either abundant, or their synthetic strategies are scalable as it will be indicated here, facilitating their derivatization to expand their scope in drug discovery. This review is a collection of representative updates …

On The Relevance Of Glycosyl Oxonium Ions To 1,2-Cis-Selective O-Glycosylation In Ether Solvents, Varad Agarkar, Ava E. Hart, Justin R. Ragains Jan 2024

On The Relevance Of Glycosyl Oxonium Ions To 1,2-Cis-Selective O-Glycosylation In Ether Solvents, Varad Agarkar, Ava E. Hart, Justin R. Ragains

Faculty Publications

Since no later than the 1970s, organic chemists have speculated on the role of glycosyl oxonium ions in chemical O-glycosylation. Such species result from the attack of ethers on glycosyl oxocarbenium ions and are invoked to explain 1,2-cis-selectivity in ether solvents. However, a systematic study to probe this phenomenon appears to be lacking in the chemical literature. Herein, we study the effects of solvent, counteranion, protecting group electron-withdrawing effects, and acceptor on O-glycosylation stereoselectivity with D-glucosyl trichloroacetimidate donors. While many of these transformations proceed with 1,2-cis-selectivity, our results suggest that glycosyl oxonium ions play minimal, if any, role in O-glycosylation.

The Role Of Holistic Mentoring Ecosystems In Mitigating Covid-19 Pandemic Impacts On The Persistence Of Low-Income Stem Students, Raeshan D. Davis, Zakiya S. Wilson-Kennedy

Faculty Publications

Holistic mentoring ecosystems are a comprehensive approach to addressing the diverse needs of students through interconnected support networks. While mentoring has been well-documented in existing literature, more research is needed to determine the effectiveness of mentoring ecosystems in mitigating the impact of critical junctures for vulnerable, high-attrition student populations. Guided by Tinto’s model of retention, this qualitative case study investigated the role of holistic mentoring ecosystems in mitigating the impacts of the two combined critical junctures—the COVID-19 pandemic and the first year of college—on low-income STEM undergraduates. Our findings suggest that holistic mentoring ecosystems were essential in helping students adjust …

Upper Bounds For The Lagrangian Cobordism Relation On Legendrian Links, Joshua M. Sabloff, David Shea Vela-Vick, C. M.Michael Wong Jan 2024

Upper Bounds For The Lagrangian Cobordism Relation On Legendrian Links, Joshua M. Sabloff, David Shea Vela-Vick, C. M.Michael Wong

Faculty Publications

Lagrangian cobordism induces a preorder on the set of Legendrian links in any contact 3–manifold. We show that any finite collection of null-homologous Legendrian links in a contact 3–manifold with a common rotation number has an upper bound with respect to the preorder. In particular, we construct an exact Lagrangian cobordism from each element of the collection to a common Legendrian link. This construction allows us to define a notion of minimal Lagrangian genus between any two null-homologous Legendrian links with a common rotation number.

Modelling And Simulation Of The Cholesteric Landau-De Gennes Model, Andrew L. Hicks, Shawn W. Walker Jan 2024

Modelling And Simulation Of The Cholesteric Landau-De Gennes Model, Andrew L. Hicks, Shawn W. Walker

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses modelling and numerical issues in the simulation of the Landau-de Gennes (LdG) model of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with cholesteric effects. We propose a fully implicit, (weighted) L2 gradient flow for computing energy minimizers of the LdG model, and note a time-step restriction for the flow to be energy decreasing. Furthermore, we give a mesh size restriction, for finite-element discretizations, that is critical to avoid spurious numerical artifacts in discrete minimizers, particularly when simulating cholesteric LCs that exhibit 'twist.' Furthermore, we perform a computational exploration of the model and present several numerical simulations in three dimensions, on …

A Cogroupoid Associated To Preregular Forms, Hongdi Huang, Van C. Nguyen, Charlotte Ure, Kent B. Vashaw, Padmini Veerapen, Xingting Wang

Faculty Publications

We construct a family of cogroupoids associated to preregular forms and recover the Morita–Takeuchi equivalence for Artin–Schelter regular algebras of dimension two, observed by Raedschelders and Van den Bergh. Moreover, we study the 2-cocycle twists of pivotal analogues of these cogroupoids, by developing a categorical description of preregularity in any tensor category that has a pivotal structure.

On The Maximum Spread Of Planar And Outerplanar Graphs, Zelong Li, William Linz, Linyuan Lu, Zhiyu Wang Jan 2024

On The Maximum Spread Of Planar And Outerplanar Graphs, Zelong Li, William Linz, Linyuan Lu, Zhiyu Wang

Faculty Publications

The spread of a graph G is the difference between the largest and smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of G. Gotshall, O’Brien and Tait conjectured that for sufficiently large n, the n-vertex outerplanar graph with maximum spread is the graph obtained by joining a vertex to a path on n − 1 vertices. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture by showing that the extremal graph is the graph obtained by joining a vertex to a path on ⌈(2n − 1)/3⌉ vertices and ⌊(n − 2)/3⌋ isolated vertices. For planar graphs, we show that the extremal n-vertex planar graph …

Timing And Evolution Of Structures Within The Southeastern Greater Caucasus And Kura Fold-Thrust Belt From Multiproxy Sediment Provenance Records, Adam M. Forte, Eric S. Cowgill, Dawn Y. Sumner, Dominique I. Garello, Nathan A. Niemi, K. Colton Fowler Jan 2024

Timing And Evolution Of Structures Within The Southeastern Greater Caucasus And Kura Fold-Thrust Belt From Multiproxy Sediment Provenance Records, Adam M. Forte, Eric S. Cowgill, Dawn Y. Sumner, Dominique I. Garello, Nathan A. Niemi, K. Colton Fowler

Faculty Publications

The Greater Caucasus (GC) mountains are the locus of post-Pliocene shortening within the northcentral Arabia-Eurasia collision. Although recent low-temperature thermochronology constrains the timing of orogen formation, the evolution of major structures remains enigmatic—particularly regarding the internal kinematics within this young orogen and the associated Kura Fold-Thrust Belt (KFTB), which flanks its southeastern margin. Here we use a multiproxy provenance analysis to investigate the tectonic history of both the southeastern GC and KFTB by presenting new data from a suite of sandstone samples from the KFTB, including sandstone petrography, whole-rock geochemistry, and detrital zircon (DZ) U-Pb geochronology. To define source terranes …

Molecular And Cellular Programs Underlying The Development Of Bovine Pre-Implantation Embryos, Zongliang Jiang Jan 2024

Molecular And Cellular Programs Underlying The Development Of Bovine Pre-Implantation Embryos, Zongliang Jiang

Faculty Publications

Early embryonic mortality is a major cause of infertility in cattle, yet the underlying molecular causes remain a mystery. Over the past half century, assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilisation and somatic cell nuclear transfer have been used to improve cattle reproductive efficiency; however, reduced embryo developmental potential is seen compared to their in vivo counterparts. Recent years have seen exciting progress across bovine embryo research, including genomic profiling of embryogenesis, new methods for improving embryo competence, and experimenting on building bovine embryos from stem cell cultures. These advances are beginning to define bovine embryo molecular and cellular …

Faculty Publications

Vaccines have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in protecting against COVID-19; however, concerns regarding vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory diseases (VAERD) following breakthrough infections have emerged. Spike protein subunit vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 induce VAERD in hamsters, where aluminum adjuvants promote a Th2-biased immune response, leading to increased type 2 pulmonary inflammation in animals with breakthrough infections. To gain a deeper understanding of the potential risks and the underlying mechanisms of VAERD, we immunized ACE2-humanized mice with SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein adjuvanted with aluminum and CpG-ODN. Subsequently, we exposed them to increasing doses of SARS-CoV-2 to establish a breakthrough infection. The vaccine elicited robust neutralizing antibody …

Reilly Center Louisiana Surveys

The 2024 Louisiana Survey is the latest in an annual series of statewide surveys from the Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs at Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communication.

Reflecting the continuing evolution of survey research, we used two approaches for this year’s survey. First, we used our traditional probability-sampling approach to draw landline and cell phone numbers for a live-interview telephone survey. Second, in partnership with the research firm YouGov, we administered an online survey to a nonprobability sample of Louisiana residents who participate in the YouGov panel. We use statistical weights in the analysis …

Motor Problems In Autism: Co-Occurrence Or Feature?, Haylie L. Miller, Melissa K. Licari, Anjana Bhat, Lisa S. Aziz-Zadeh, Tine Van Damme, Nicholas E. Fears, Sharon A. Cermak, Priscila M. Tamplain Jan 2024

Motor Problems In Autism: Co-Occurrence Or Feature?, Haylie L. Miller, Melissa K. Licari, Anjana Bhat, Lisa S. Aziz-Zadeh, Tine Van Damme, Nicholas E. Fears, Sharon A. Cermak, Priscila M. Tamplain

Faculty Publications

Motor features of autism have long been acknowledged by clinicians, researchers, and community stakeholders. Current DSM-5 and ICD-11 guidelines allow clinicians to assign a co-occurring diagnosis of developmental [motor] coordination disorder (DCD) for autistic individuals with significant motor problems. DCD is characterized by poor motor proficiency with an onset of symptoms in early development. Studies have shown considerable overlap in the behavioral motor features observed in autism and DCD. However, others indicate that motor problems in autism and DCD may stem from different underlying sensorimotor mechanisms. Regardless of whether autism has a unique motor phenotype or an overlap with DCD, …

Cow’s milk is frequently included in the human diet, but the relationship between milk intake and type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains controversial. Here, using data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, we show that in both sexes, higher milk intake is associated with lower risk of T2D in lactase non-persistent (LNP) individuals (determined by a variant of the lactase LCT gene, single nucleotide polymorphism rs4988235) but not in lactase persistent individuals. We validate this finding in the UK Biobank. Further analyses reveal that among LNP individuals, higher milk intake is associated with alterations in gut microbiota (for example, …

Human–Environment Interactions At Ta’Ab Nuk Na, A Submerged Maya Salt Works Site In Belize, Cheryl M. Foster, Heather Mckillop, E. Cory Sills

Faculty Publications

Sea-level rise and settlement are investigated at Ta’ab Nuk Na, an ancient Maya salt works in Belize, by examining samples from wooden posts and marine sediment. The samples included Post 145 of Building B and the Nunavut beam, along with marine sediment columns cut from beside both wooden posts. The sediment columns were sampled at 2 cm intervals. Loss-on ignition confirmed the presence of organic material. Identifying the organic content involved removing nonorganic material from the sediment and sorting the organic material under magnification. This procedure established that most of the organic material was red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle). Red mangroves …

Flooded Mangrove Landscapes Hide Ancient Maya Coastal Sites In Belize, Heather I. Mckillop

Faculty Publications

Evidence of ancient Maya exploitation of salt, other marine resources, settlement, and sea trade is hidden in flooded mangrove landscapes on the cays, mainland, and in shallow offshore locations on the south coast of Belize. This article includes a discussion of the coastal economy from the Middle Preclassic through the Postclassic periods (600 B.C.–A.D. 1500). Data from sites discovered and excavated since 1982 in the coastal area of the Port Honduras and Paynes Creek National Park support a model of coastal reliance on marine resources and tree crops. The need for a regular supply of coastal salt to inland cities …

Recent advancements in natural language processing have given rise to numerous pre-training language models in question-answering systems. However, with the constant evolution of algorithms, data, and computing power, the increasing size and complexity of these models have led to increased training costs and reduced efficiency. This study aims to minimize the inference time of such models while maintaining computational performance. It also proposes a novel Distillation model for PAL-BERT (DPAL-BERT), specifically, employs knowledge distillation, using the PAL-BERT model as the teacher model to train two student models: DPAL-BERT-Bi and DPAL-BERT-C. This research enhances the dataset through techniques such as masking, …

Faculty Publications

This study addresses the limitations of Transformer models in image feature extraction, particularly their lack of inductive bias for visual structures. Compared to Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), the Transformers are more sensitive to different hyperparameters of optimizers, which leads to a lack of stability and slow convergence. To tackle these challenges, we propose the Convolution-based Efficient Transformer Image Feature Extraction Network (CEFormer) as an enhancement of the Transformer architecture. Our model incorporates E-Attention, depthwise separable convolution, and dilated convolution to introduce crucial inductive biases, such as translation invariance, locality, and scale invariance, into the Transformer framework. Additionally, we implement a …

Faculty Publications

At present, super-resolution algorithms are employed to tackle the challenge of low image resolution, but it is difficult to extract differentiated feature details based on various inputs, resulting in poor generalization ability. Given this situation, this study first analyzes the features of some feature extraction modules of the current super-resolution algorithm and then proposes an adaptive feature fusion block (AFB) for feature extraction. This module mainly comprises dynamic convolution, attention mechanism, and pixel-based gating mechanism. Combined with dynamic convolution with scale information, the network can extract more differentiated feature information. The introduction of a channel spatial attention mechanism combined with …

Revisiting The Notion Of Vicarious Cause: Allure, Metaphor, And Realism In Object-Oriented Ontology, Jon Cogburn, Niki Young

Faculty Publications

We revisit the notion of vicarious causation in Graham Harman's Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) in order to first show that Harman has articulated two iterations of his account that are in tension with one another; one is found in his earlier paper "On Vicarious Causation,"while the other is contained in his later writings following the publication of Object-Oriented Ontology: A New Theory of Everything. This involves a critical assessment of his developing theory of metaphor in a way that encourages sympathetic revision in the service of improving his non-correlationist view of intra-objective relations.

Sharp Bounds In The Latent Index Selection Model, Philip Marx Jan 2024

Sharp Bounds In The Latent Index Selection Model, Philip Marx

Faculty Publications

A fundamental question underlying the literature on partial identification is: what can we learn about parameters that are relevant for policy but not necessarily point-identified by the exogenous variation we observe? This paper provides an answer in terms of sharp, analytic characterizations and bounds for an important class of policy-relevant treatment effects, consisting of marginal treatment effects and linear functionals thereof, in the latent index selection model as formalized in Vytlacil (2002). The sharp bounds use the full content of identified marginal distributions, and analytic derivations rely on the theory of stochastic orders. The proposed methods also make it possible …
