The use of dredged material from continental shelves and estuaries for degraded barrier islands has become a common practice worldwide. South Pelto block on eastern Ship Shoal (SS) off the coast of Louisiana has been dredged for high-quality sand resources, including Caminada Dredge Pit (CDP) and multiple pits in East Timbalier borrow areas (ET) adjacent to CDP. To understand how these dredge pits change and sediments infill over time, multiple surveys were conducted, including bathymetry, sidescan sonar, subbottom CHIRP, and sediment samples were collected for grain size analysis. Although there is no nearby muddy sediment, sidescan and grain size data …

Guinea Pig Herpes Like Virus Is A Gamma Herpesvirus, Brent A. Stanfield, Emmanuelle Ruiz, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Guinea Pig Herpes-Like Virus (GPHLV) is a virus isolated from leukemic guinea pigs with herpes virus-like morphology described by Hsiung and Kaplow in 1969. GPHLV transformed embryonic cells from Syrian hamsters or rats, which were tumorigenic in adult animals. Herein, we present the genomic sequence of GPHLV strain LK40 as a reference for future molecular analysis. GPHLV has a broad host tropism and replicates efficiently in Guinea pig, Cat, and Green African Monkey-derived cell lines. GPHLV has a GC content of 35.45%. The genome is predicted to encode at least 75 open-reading frames (ORFs) with 84% (63 ORFs) sharing homology …

Impacts Of Extreme Weather Events On Mortgage Risks And Their Evolution Under Climate Change: A Case Study On Florida, Raffaella Calabrese, Timothy Dombrowski, Antoine Mandel, R. Kelley Pace, Luca Zanin

Faculty Publications

We develop an additive Cox proportional hazard model with time-varying covariates, including spatio-temporal characteristics of weather events, to study the impact of weather extremes (heavy rains and tropical cyclones) on the probability of mortgage default and prepayment. We compare the survival model with a flexible logistic model and an extreme gradient boosting algorithm. We estimate the models on a portfolio of mortgages in Florida, consisting of 69,046 loans and 3,707,831 loan-month observations with localization data at the five-digit ZIP code level. We find a statistically significant and non-linear impact of tropical cyclone intensity on default as well as a significant …

Modeling And Numerical Analysis Of The Cholesteric Landau-De Gennes Model, Andrew L. Hicks Apr 2024

Modeling And Numerical Analysis Of The Cholesteric Landau-De Gennes Model, Andrew L. Hicks

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis gives an analysis of modeling and numerical issues in the Landau-de Gennes (LdG) model of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with cholesteric effects. We derive various time-step restrictions for a (weighted) $L^2$ gradient flow scheme to be energy decreasing. Furthermore, we prove a mesh size restriction, for finite element discretizations, that is critical to avoid spurious numerical artifacts in discrete minimizers that is not well-known in the LC literature, particularly when simulating cholesteric LCs that exhibit ``twist''. Furthermore, we perform a computational exploration of the model and present several numerical simulations in 3-D, on both slab geometries and spherical …

Effects Of Wind On The Stability Of Explosive Eruption Plumes, Tyler Paladino, Shannon Kobs Nawotniak, Bryan Nicholson, Suniti Karunatillake

Faculty Publications

Explosive volcanic eruptions can produce eruption plumes and pyroclastic density currents that can severely damage life and property. While many factors influence eruption plume stability, including mass eruption rate, grain size distribution, and environmental factors, the role of wind is complicated, with evidence for wind as both a stabilizing and destabilizing factor. Here we use the Active Tracer High-resolution Atmospheric Model (ATHAM) to simulate 980 plumes with differing eruptive parameters, atmospheric profiles, and wind conditions to isolate how and when wind can lead to column collapse. We analyze these simulations via a novel method that provides stability percentage via an …

Analysis And Improvement Of Efficient Charge Recovery Logic Adiabatic Circuits, William Morell Apr 2024

Analysis And Improvement Of Efficient Charge Recovery Logic Adiabatic Circuits, William Morell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Power consumption has been an ever-present concern since the dawn of electronic computing. Every operation that a device performs consumes some amount of energy and as the demand for computation increases, both in scale and ubiquity, reducing this energy loss becomes more important. While modern devices are orders of magnitude more efficient than their ancestors on a per-operation basis, they are increasingly used in more resource constrained applications. Tiny, Internet of Things (IoT) machines are prevalent these days and demanded to perform data collection and analysis at all hours of the day for days at a time on small battery. …

Cyber Attacks Against Industrial Control Systems, Adam Kardorff Apr 2024

Cyber Attacks Against Industrial Control Systems, Adam Kardorff

LSU Master's Theses

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are the foundation of our critical infrastructure, and allow for the manufacturing of the products we need. These systems monitor and control power plants, water treatment plants, manufacturing plants, and much more. The security of these systems is crucial to our everyday lives and to the safety of those working with ICS. In this thesis we examined how an attacker can take control of these systems using a power plant simulator in the Applied Cybersecurity Lab at LSU. Running experiments on a live environment can be costly and dangerous, so using a simulated environment is the …

Special flood hazard areas (SFHAs), defined as having an annual probability of occurrence of 1 percent or above, are used by U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to demarcate areas within which flood insurance purchase is required to secure a mortgage. However, quantifying flood risk within SFHAs can be challenging due to the lack of modeled flood depth data for all return periods. To address this issue, this research quantifies flood risk indicated by average annual loss (AAL) within the A Zone—the subset of the SFHA where wave heights can potentially range from 0 to 3 feet. The methodology resolves …

Ethylene is well known as the primary product of CO2 reduction at Cu electrocatalysts using zero-gap membrane electrode assembly cells with gas diffusion cathodes. Other types of Cu electrocatalysts including oxide-derived Cu, CuSn and CuSe yield relatively more C2 oxygenates; however, the mechanisms for C2 product selectivity are not well established. This work considers selectivity trends of Cu-P0.065, Cu-Sn0.03, and Cu2Se electrocatalysts made using a standard one pot synthesis method. Results show that Cu-P0.065 electrocatalysts (Cuδ+ = 0.13) retain ethylene as a primary product with relatively higher Faradaic efficiencies (FE = 43% at 350 mA cm−2) than undoped Cu electrocatalysts …

Interactive Effects Of Co2, Temperature, And Nitrate Limitation On The Growth And Physiology Of Marine Cyanobacterium Synechococcus Sp. Ccmp 1334, Alyssa K. Sharbaugh

LSU Master's Theses

The marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. CCMP 1334 was grown in a continuous culture system on a 12:12 h light:dark cycle at all combinations of low and high pCO2 (400 and 1000 ppmv, respectively), nitrate availability (nitrate-limited and nutrient-replete conditions), and temperatures of 21°C, 24°C, 28°C, 32°C, and 35°C. The maximum median nutrient-replete growth rate was ~1.15 d−1 at 32 –35°C. Median growth rates at 1000 ppmv pCO2 were higher than those at 400 ppmv at all temperatures, but most of the differences were statistically insignificant. Carbon:nitrogen ratios were independent of pCO2 at a fixed relative growth rate but decreased with …

Supply And Distribution Of Flow And Sediment In River And Delta System, Kazi M. Sadid Mar 2024

Supply And Distribution Of Flow And Sediment In River And Delta System, Kazi M. Sadid

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

River deltas are valuable ecosystems that have been essential in supporting human populations and the economy across the world for centuries. However, climate change and human activities have caused significant land loss in delta areas. A prime example of a region that has suffered severe land loss is Louisiana in the United States. Coastal restoration is therefore essential for the livelihoods of its residents. To address this issue, the Lower Mississippi River (LMR) channel bar has been regularly dredged to rebuild degraded marsh areas. Additionally, sediment diversions off LMR have been designed to build marsh areas sustainably. This dissertation investigates …
