© 2017 American Association of Neuropathologists, Inc. Spiroplasma spp., tiny filterable wall-less bacteria, are consistently associated with the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). Spiral forms have been transiently isolated from TSE-affected brain tissues in SP4 growth media designed for isolation of Spiroplasma spp., but the isolate could not be propagated in SP4 media. A bacterium must grow in vitro in cell-free cultures to allow full characterization of a suspect pathogen. Here, a novel Spiroplasma sp. was isolated from scrapie- and chronic wasting disease (CWD)-affected brains and lymph nodes. Filtrates of tissue homogenates inoculated into Brucella media incubated for 14 days at …

Early diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa) is critical for the application of efficient treatment to PCa patients. However, the majority of PCas remains indolent from several months to several years before malignancy. Current diagnosis methods have limitations in their reliability and are inefficient in time cost. Thus, an efficient in vivo PCa cell xenograft model is highly desired for diagnostic studies in PCas. In the present study we present a standardized procedure to create a PCa cell xenograft model using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as the host. PC3-CTR cells, a cell line from adenocarcinoma with stable expression of calcitonin receptor (CRT), …

© 2018 The Authors. Epithelial cultures are commonly used for studying gut health. However, due to the absence of mesenchymal cells and gut structure, epithelial culture systems including recently developed three-dimensional organoid culture cannot accurately represent in vivo gut development, which requires intense cross-regulation of the epithelial layer with the underlying mesenchymal tissue. In addition, organoid culture is costly. To overcome this, a new culture system was developed using mouse embryonic small intestine. Cultured intestine showed spontaneous peristalsis, indicating the maintenance of the normal gut physiological structure. During 10 days of ex vivo culture, epithelial cells moved along the gut …

© 2018 The Authors. BACKGROUND: Although c-Kit+ adult progenitor cells were initially reported to produce new cardiomyocytes in the heart, recent genetic evidence suggests that such events are exceedingly rare. However, to determine if these rare events represent true de novo cardiomyocyte formation, we deleted the necessary cardiogenic transcription factors Gata4 and Gata6 from c-Kit-expressing cardiac progenitor cells. METHODS: Kit allele-dependent lineage tracing and fusion analysis were performed in mice following simultaneous Gata4 and Gata6 cell type-specifc deletion to examine rates of putative de novo cardiomyocyte formation from c-Kit+ cells. Bone marrow transplantation experiments were used to defne the contribution …

The War For The Common Soldier: How Men Thought, Fought, And Survived In Civil War Armies, Meg Groeling
Civil War Book Review
Carmichael's book examines how Civil War soldiers endured their life in the Union and Confederate armies. These men were volunteer soldiers, for the most part, so military life was a shock for most of them. One example concerns uniforms and the difference between Union and Confederate reactions. At the beginning of the war, everyone got a new set of clothes and a pair of shoes. For Yankees, this was a reasonably regular occurrence, but for Rebels, a new set of clothing or a pair of shoes of any variety was difficult to obtain. Carmichael uses letters and records from individual …

© 2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry. Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit excellent tunable emissions covering the entire visible spectral region, but they do not emit near-infrared (NIR) light. We synthesized rare earth element doped CsPbCl3 NCs for NIR emission. The Yb3+ doped CsPbCl3 NCs emitted strong 986 nm NIR light; the Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped CsPbCl3 NCs emitted at 1533 nm. The total photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of the CsPbCl3 NCs changed from 5.0% to 127.8% upon incorporating 2.0% Yb3+, a factor of 25.6 times enhancement. The material's stability was tested under continuous ultraviolet (365 nm) irradiation. The doped …

© 2018 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor and Francis Group. All Rights Reserved. Capacity constraints have major effects on restaurant competition. This article captures the impact of capacity constraints on quality and quantity competition of restaurant industry by employing a two-stage asymmetric capacity constraints model. There are several findings from this study. First, results of this study indicate that reputation difference increases total outputs and quality in equilibrium. Second, capacity constraints decrease the consumer surplus (CS) as well as social welfare (SW), but restaurants benefit from capacity constraints sometimes. Third, capacity reduces both the quality …

The use of large genomic data sets in phylogenetics has highlighted extensive topological variation across genes. Much of this discordance is assumed to result from biological processes. However, variation among gene trees can also be a consequence of systematic error driven by poor model fit, and the relative importance of biological vs. methodological factors in explaining gene tree variation is a major unresolved question. Using mitochondrial genomes to control for biological causes of gene tree variation, we estimate the extent …

© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd During the process of ecological speciation, reproductive isolation results from divergent natural selection and leads to a positive correlation between genetic divergence and adaptive phenotypic divergence, that is, isolation by adaptation (IBA). In natural populations, phenotypic differentiation is often autocorrelated with geographic distance, making IBA difficult to distinguish from the neutral expectation of isolation by distance (IBD). We examined these two alternatives in a dramatic case of clinal phenotypic variation in an Andean songbird, the Line-cheeked Spinetail (Cranioleuca antisiensis). At its geographic extremes, this species shows a near threefold difference in body mass …

Stress Energy Tensor Renormalization For A Spherically Symmetric Massive Scalar Field On A Quantum Space-Time, Nahuel Barrios, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We consider a massive scalar field living on the recently found exact quantum space-time corresponding to vacuum spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity. The discreteness of the quantum space time naturally regularizes the scalar field, eliminating divergences. However, the resulting finite theory depends on the details of the micro physics. We argue that such dependence can be eliminated through a finite renormalization and discuss its nature. This is an example of how quantum field theories on quantum space times deal with the issues of divergences in quantum field theories.

We study the average intensity-intensity correlations signal at the output of a two-mode squeezing device with |N〉 × |α) as the two input modes. We show that the input photon-number can be resolved from the average intensity-intensity correlations. In particular, we show jumps in the average intensity-intensity correlations signal as a function of input photon-number N. Therefore, we propose that such a device may be deployed as photon-number-resolving detector at room temperature with high efficiency.

Fundamental Limits On Quantum Dynamics Based On Entropy Change, Siddhartha Das, Sumeet Khatri, George Siopsis, Mark M. Wilde

It is well known in the realm of quantum mechanics and information theory that the entropy is non-decreasing for the class of unital physical processes. However, in general, the entropy does not exhibit monotonic behavior. This has restricted the use of entropy change in characterizing evolution processes. Recently, a lower bound on the entropy change was provided in the work of Buscemi, Das, and Wilde [Phys. Rev. A 93(6), 062314 (2016)]. We explore the limit that this bound places on the physical evolution of a quantum system and discuss how these limits can be used as witnesses to characterize quantum …

We present the discovery of the giant planet KELT-19Ab, which transits the moderately bright (V ∼ 9.9) A8V star TYC 764-1494-1 with an orbital period of 4.61 days. We confirm the planetary nature of the companion via a combination of radial velocities, which limit the mass to ≳4.1 MJ (3s), and a clear Doppler tomography signal, which indicates a retrograde projected spin-orbit misalignment of λ = -179.7-3.8+3.7 degrees. Global modeling indicates that the Teff = 7500 ±110 K host star has M M = 1.62+0.20-0.25 and R = 1.83 0.10 R. The planet has a radius of RP = 1.91 …

We present microlensing planet OGLE-2017-BLG-0173Lb, with planet-host mass ratio of either q ∼ 2.5 ×10-5 or q ∼ 6.5 ×10-5, the lowest or among the lowest ever detected. The planetary perturbation is strongly detected, δx2 10000, because it arises from a bright (therefore, large) source passing over and enveloping the planetary caustic: a so-called "Hollywood" event. The factor ∼2.5 offset in q arises because of a previously unrecognized discrete degeneracy between Hollywood events in which the caustic is fully enveloped and those in which only one flank is enveloped, which we dub "Cannae" and "von Schlieffen," respectively. This degeneracy is …

We report the discovery of OGLE-2016-BLG-1190Lb, which is likely to be the first Spitzer microlensing planet in the Galactic bulge/bar, an assignation that can be confirmed by two epochs of high-resolution imaging of the combined source-lens baseline object. The planet's mass, Mp = 13.4 ± 0.9 MJ, places it right at the deuterium-burning limit, i.e., the conventional boundary between "planets" and "brown dwarfs." Its existence raises the question of whether such objects are really "planets" (formed within the disks of their hosts) or "failed stars" (low-mass objects formed by gas fragmentation). This question may ultimately be addressed by comparing disk …

Emergence Of Product Of Constant Curvature Spaces In Loop Quantum Cosmology, Naresh Dadhich, Anton Joe, Parampreet Singh

The loop quantum dynamics of Kantowski-Sachs and Bianchi-III LRS spacetimes with cosmological constant is studied in the effective spacetime description. We show that classical singularity is avoided, and replaced by bounces of the triads. Unlike the singularity resolution in other loop quantum spacetimes, evolution results in a spacetime which retains quantum curvature after the bounce on one side of the temporal evolution. In the asymptotic limit, a spacetime which is a direct product of two constant curvature spaces emerges. Interestingly, despite high curvature, the effective spacetime metric is a solution of Einstein field's equations albeit with a different stress energy …

The Vertex Expansion In The Consistent Histories Formulation Of Spin Foam Loop Quantum Cosmology, David Craig, Parampreet Singh

Assignment of consistent quantum probabilities to events in a quantum universe is a fundamental challenge which every quantum cosmology/gravity framework must overcome. In loop quantum cosmology, this issue leads to a fundamental question: What is the probability that the universe undergoes a non-singular bounce? Using the consistent histories formulation, this question was successfully answered recently by the authors for a spatially flat FRW model in the canonical approach. In this manuscript, we obtain a covariant generalization of this result. Our analysis is based on expressing loop quantum cosmology in the spin foam paradigm and using histories defined via volume transitions …

We propose a single-shot scheme to measure the orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) spectrum of a partially coherent field. We first test the scheme for a known field, and then use it to measure the OAM spectrum of the signal-idler field from parametric down-conversion with Schmidt number K = 82:1.
