Classification Accuracy Of Teacher Ratings When Screening Nonmainstream English-Speaking Kindergartners For Language Impairment In The Rural South, Kyomi D. Gregory, Janna B. Oetting
Classification Accuracy Of Teacher Ratings When Screening Nonmainstream English-Speaking Kindergartners For Language Impairment In The Rural South, Kyomi D. Gregory, Janna B. Oetting
Faculty Publications
Purpose: We compared teacher ratings as measured by the Teacher Rating of Oral Language and Literacy (TROLL; Dickinson, McCabe, & Sprague, 2001, 2003) and Children’s Communication Checklist–Second Edition (CCC-2; Bishop, 2006) to 2 established screeners, the Part II of the Diagnostic Evaluation of Language Variation–Screening Test (DELV-ST-II; Seymour, Roeper, & de Villiers, 2003) and Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills–Next (DIBELS; Good, Gruba, & Kaminski, 2009), and then examined whether teacher ratings alone or when combined with the DELV-ST-II or DIBELS accurately classify nonmainstream English-speaking kindergartners by their clinical status. Method: Data came from 98 children who lived in …
Activation Of Free Sperm And Dissociation Of Sperm Bundles (Spermatozeugmata) Of An Endangered Viviparous Fish, Xenotoca Eiseni, Yue Liu, Huiping Yang, Leticia Torres, Terrence R. Tiersch
Activation Of Free Sperm And Dissociation Of Sperm Bundles (Spermatozeugmata) Of An Endangered Viviparous Fish, Xenotoca Eiseni, Yue Liu, Huiping Yang, Leticia Torres, Terrence R. Tiersch
Faculty Publications
Knowledge of sperm motility activation for viviparous fishes has been limited to study of several species in Poeciliidae, and the dissociation of sperm bundles is even less understood. The goal of this study was to use the endangered Redtail Splitfin (Xenotoca eiseni) as a model to investigate the activation of sperm from viviparous fishes by study of free sperm and spermatozeugmata (unencapsulated sperm bundles). The specific objectives were to evaluate the effects of: (1) osmotic pressure and refrigerated storage (4 °C) on activation of free sperm, (2) osmotic pressure, ions, and pH on dissociation of spermatozeugmata, and (3) CaCl2 concentration …

The Clash Of Rights: Explaining Attitudes Toward A Religious Exemption To The Hhs Contraception Mandate, Kate Garand Holmes, James C. Garand
Faculty Publications
In recent years, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) contraception mandate associated with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been a contentious issue that has created clash-of-rights claims between advocates of reproductive freedom and advocates of religious freedom. Americans differ considerably in their views toward whether religiously affiliated institutions that object to the use of contraceptives should be granted an exemption to the HHS contraception mandate. This article explores the determinants of Americans' support for or opposition to the religious exemption. We focus particularly on the effects of individuals' religious orientations, gender, and political attitudes …

Biochar shows promise as a potential low–cost sorbent for removing oxyanions from wastewater. However, this generic material exhibits a very wide range in porosity, surface area and surface chemical properties that depend on the starting biomass composition and the conditions under which it is converted to char. Without dosing either reactant biomass or product biochar with certain metals (in elemental, oxide/hydroxide or layered double hydroxide form), the capacity of biochar to remove oxyanions is usually low. This review compiles the recent research on modifications of biochar to produce metal-biochar composites that exhibit high oxyanion removal capacities. The general effect of …
Race-Ethnicity, Union Status, And Change In Body Mass Index In Young Adulthood, Rhiannon A. Kroeger, Reanne Frank
Race-Ethnicity, Union Status, And Change In Body Mass Index In Young Adulthood, Rhiannon A. Kroeger, Reanne Frank
Faculty Publications
This study used data from three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health and fixed effects regression to consider whether associations between change in union status and change in body mass index (BMI) were moderated by race-ethnicity. The results indicated that intimate unions were differentially associated with gains in BMI along racial-ethnic lines, especially for women. When compared with White women, marriage was associated with larger increases in BMI for Black, Hispanic, and Multiracial women, and cohabitation was associated with larger increases for Black and Hispanic women. In contrast, marriage and cohabitation were associated with less …

P62 As A Therapeutic Target For Inhibition Of Autophagy In Prostate Cancer, Lei Wang, Donghern Kim, James T.F. Wise, Xianglin Shi, Zhuo Zhang, Robert S. Dipaola
Faculty Publications
Background: To test the hypothesis that p62 is an optimal target for autophagy inhibition and Verteporfin, a clinically available drug approved by FDA to treat macular degeneration that inhibits autophagy by targeting p62 protein, can be developed clinically to improve therapy for advanced prostate cancer. Methods: Forced expression of p62 in PC-3 cells and normal prostate epithelial cells, RWPE-1 and PZ-HPV7, were carried out by transfection of these cells with pcDNA3.1/p62 or p62 shRNA plasmid. Autophagosomes and autophagic flux were measured by transfection of tandem fluorescence protein mCherry-GFP-LC3 construct. Apoptosis was measured by Annexin V/PI staining. Tumorigenesis was measured by …

Coupled Effects Of Oil Spill And Hurricane On Saltmarsh Terrestrial Arthropods, Wokil Bam, Linda M. Hooper-Bui, Rachel M. Strecker, Puspa L. Adhikari, Edward B. Overton
Faculty Publications
Terrestrial arthropods play an important role in saltmarsh ecosystems, mainly affecting the saltmarsh’s primary production as the main consumers of terrestrial primary production and decomposition. Some of these arthropods, including selected insects and spiders, can be used as ecological indicators of overall marsh environmental health, as they are differentially sensitive to ecological stressors, such as land loss, erosion, oil spills, and tropical storms. In the present study, we used terrestrial arthropods collected from seven (three lightly-oiled, four heavily-oiled) sites in Barataria Bay and from three unoiled reference sites in Delacroix, Louisiana, to determine the impacts of the distribution and re-distribution …

Short-Time Nonlinear Effects In The Exciton-Polariton System, Cristi D. Guevara, Stephen P. Shipman
Short-Time Nonlinear Effects In The Exciton-Polariton System, Cristi D. Guevara, Stephen P. Shipman
Faculty Publications
In the exciton-polariton system, a linear dispersive photon field is coupled to a nonlinear exciton field. Short-time analysis of the lossless system shows that, when the photon field is excited, the time required for that field to exhibit nonlinear effects is longer than the time required for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, in which the photon field itself is nonlinear. When the initial condition is scaled by ϵα, it is found that the relative error committed by omitting the nonlinear term in the exciton-polariton system remains within ϵ for all times up to t= Cϵβ, where β= …
Parenting In The Context Of Deportation Risk, Jodi Berger Cardoso, Jennifer L. Scott, Monica Faulkner, Liza Barros Lane
Parenting In The Context Of Deportation Risk, Jodi Berger Cardoso, Jennifer L. Scott, Monica Faulkner, Liza Barros Lane

Nearly 5.1 million children younger than age 18 live with at least one undocumented parent, about 7% of the U.S. child population. Between 2010 and 2013, an estimated 300,000 parents of U.S. citizen children were deported. Raising children in the context of deportation risk increases overall parenting stress for undocumented Latino parents. To investigate this and understand the experience of undocumented parenting, the authors interviewed 70 undocumented parents in two Southwest cities from 2012 to 2013. The authors frame their analysis using the lens of the problem of “illegality.” There are three domains of stressors associated with parenting in the …

In this study, we compared the prediction accuracy of the main genotypic effect model (MM) without G×E interactions, the multi-environment single variance G×E deviation model (MDs), and the multienvironment environment-specific variance G×E deviation model (MDe) where the random genetic effects of the lines are modeled with the markers (or pedigree). With the objective of further modeling the genetic residual of the lines, we incorporated the random intercepts of the lines (l) and generated another three models. Each of these 6 models were fitted with a linear kernel method (Genomic Best Linear Unbiased Predictor, GB) and a Gaussian Kernel (GK) method. …
