We have studied, experimentally and theoretically, the ionization probability of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) molecules in intense linearly polarized 800-nm laser pulses as a function of the angle between the molecular axis and the laser polarization. Experimentally, the molecules are exposed to two laser pulses with a relative time delay. The first, weaker pulse induces a nuclear rotational wave packet within each molecule such that the ensemble exhibits preferential alignment in the laboratory frame at specific times. The second, stronger pulse induces ionization, and the variation in single and double ionization yields is measured as a function of the delay between …
Foreign Aid And Political Stability In Post-Colonial Africa: A Case Study Analysis, Justine Biettron
Foreign Aid And Political Stability In Post-Colonial Africa: A Case Study Analysis, Justine Biettron
LSU Master's Theses
Is foreign aid helpful or harmful in African countries? Even though scholars have tried to answer this question for decades, it is still unclear if foreign aid has efficiently helped the African continent to overcome the challenges that arose with the end of Colonization. A priority for the African countries was to reorganize the institutions in order to reestablish autonomous and stable system of governance. An important amount of help for this reconstruction has come from external actors, that have been referred to in the literature as foreign aid. In this paper, I seek to test the relationship between the …
Three-Dimensional Flow, Morphologic Change, And Sediment Deposition And Distribution Of Actively Evolving Neck Cutoffs Located On The White River, Arkansas, Derek Allen Richards
Three-Dimensional Flow, Morphologic Change, And Sediment Deposition And Distribution Of Actively Evolving Neck Cutoffs Located On The White River, Arkansas, Derek Allen Richards
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Neck cutoffs are important and prominent features of alluvial rivers yet detailed field-based research of neck cutoffs has been insufficient to fully characterize three-dimensional flow, morphologic change, and sediment deposition and distribution. The main objectives of this research are to examine the formation and evolution of neck cutoffs by characterizing the flow field, morphology, and sediment distribution through neck cutoffs with complex planform configurations located on the White River, Arkansas. Results led to the production of two conceptual models. The flow model has main hydrodynamic characteristics of (1) tight bend flow resulting from flow redirection of nearly 180° through the …

Dissolved and particulate organic carbon, suspended particulate matter concentrations, and their optical proxies colored dissolved organic matter absorption and backscattering coefficients were studied in Galveston Bay, Texas, following the extreme flooding of Houston and surrounding areas due to Hurricane Harvey (25–29 August 2017) using field and ocean color observations. A three-step empirical-semianalytic algorithm for determination of colored dissolved organic matter absorption and backscattering coefficients revealed the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon and particle distribution from Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometric Suite ocean color. Environmental drivers, especially floodwater discharge and winds, strongly influenced the spatiotemporal distribution of dissolved/particulate material in the …

With the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we have observed the radio emission from 561 extensive air showers with zenith angles between 60 and 84. In contrast to air showers with more vertical incidence, these inclined air showers illuminate large ground areas of several km2 with radio signals detectable in the 30 to 80 MHz band. A comparison of the measured radio-signal amplitudes with Monte Carlo simulations of a subset of 50 events for which we reconstruct the energy using the Auger surface detector shows agreement within the uncertainties of the current analysis. As expected …

Controlling Refractionusing Sub-Wavelength Resonators, Yue Chen, Robert Lipton
Faculty Publications
We construct metamaterials from sub-wavelength nonmagnetic resonators and consider the refraction of incoming signals traveling from free space into the metamaterial. We show that the direction of the transmitted signal is a function of its center frequency and bandwidth. The directionality of the transmitted signal and its frequency dependence is shown to be explicitly controlled by sub-wavelength resonances that can be calculated from the geometry of the sub-wavelength scatters. We outline how to construct a medium with both positive and negative index properties across different frequency bands in the near infrared and optical regime.
Numerical Study Of Liquid Atomization And Breakup Using The Volume Of Fluid Method In Ansys Fluent, Sai Saran Kandati
Numerical Study Of Liquid Atomization And Breakup Using The Volume Of Fluid Method In Ansys Fluent, Sai Saran Kandati
LSU Master's Theses
The spherical metal particles produced from the centrifugal atomization process have been the topic of numerous theoretical, experimental and numerical studies from the past few years. This atomization process uses centrifugal force to break-up molten material into spherical droplets, which are quenched into solidified granules by the flow of cold air on the spherical droplets. In the present work, a transient three-dimensional multiphase CFD model is applied to three different materials: Molten slag, aqueous glycerol solution, and molten Ni-Nb to study the influence of the dimensionless parameters on the centrifugal atomization outcome.
Results from numerical experiments indicated that the droplet …
An Evaluation Of Sciaenid Growth In The Gulf Of Mexico, Shane Flinn
An Evaluation Of Sciaenid Growth In The Gulf Of Mexico, Shane Flinn
LSU Master's Theses
Growth models estimate life history parameters that are used in the management of fisheries stocks. The most commonly used growth model in fisheries is the von Bertalanffy growth model (VBGM), yet it has been shown to provide a poor fit for length-at-age data of some species and other models exist. I reviewed 196 peer-reviewed age and growth studies and 50 NOAA stock assessments to examine temporal trends in the use of growth models and model selection in fisheries. I found that the use of multi-model frameworks has increased since the year 2000 and information theoretic approaches are replacing goodness-of-fit and …
A Regional Survey Of River-Plume Sedimentation On The Mississippi River Delta Front, Andrew J. Courtois
A Regional Survey Of River-Plume Sedimentation On The Mississippi River Delta Front, Andrew J. Courtois
LSU Master's Theses
Many studies of the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) have shown historic declines in sediment load over the last few decades. Recent studies also reported that ~50% of the suspended load during floods is sequestered within the delta. While the impact of declining sediment load on wetland loss is relatively well documented, submarine sedimentary processes on the delta front during this recent period of are understudied. To better understand modern sediment dispersal and deposition across the Mississippi River Delta Front, 31 multicores were collected in June 2017 from locations extending offshore from the main river outlets in water depths of 25-280 …
Evaluation Of Synthetic Cpt And Soil Boring Data By Various Spatial Interpolation Techniques, Md Habibur Rahman
Evaluation Of Synthetic Cpt And Soil Boring Data By Various Spatial Interpolation Techniques, Md Habibur Rahman
LSU Master's Theses
In order to incorporate the influence of collected in-situ data, the spatial correlation between the data and the foundation needs to be explored. However, risk and uncertainty are the characteristics of the soil that cannot be eliminated. Statistical information of the soil property can be estimated from available field data obtained from testing at discrete locations across the site. In this research, several well-established spatial interpolation methods like ordinary kriging (OK), simple kriging (SK), inverse distance weight (IDW), spline, natural neighbor (NaN) and universal kriging (UK) were incorporated to evaluate the best method. Six CPT (Cone penetration test) (Tip Resistance …
Iron-Sulfur Cluster Biogenesis And Iron Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Jing Yang
Iron-Sulfur Cluster Biogenesis And Iron Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Jing Yang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Iron-sulfur clusters as key cofactors are involved in multiple cellular processes, such as central metabolism and respiration, gene regulation and DNA repair. In Escherichia coli, iron-sulfur clusters are assembled by a group of dedicated proteins. While the sulfide in iron-sulfur clusters is derived from L-cysteine via cysteine desulfurase IscS, the iron source still remains unknown. It has been proposed that IscA and its paralog SufA may act as iron chaperones for iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis. The first part of this work focuses on the interplay between cysteine desulfurase IscS and iron chaperons IscA/SufA. The results show that deletion of IscA/SufA …

Crash/Near-Crash: Impact Of Secondary Tasks And Real-Time Detection Of Distracted Driving, Peter Ramzy Zaki Bakhit
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The main goal of this dissertation is to investigate the problem of distracted driving from two different perspectives. First, the identification of possible sources of distraction and their associated crash/near-crash risk. That can assist government officials toward more informed decision-making process, allowing for optimized allocation of available resources to reduce roadway crashes and improve traffic safety. Second, actively counteracting the distracted driving phenomenon by quantitative evaluation of eye glance patterns.
This dissertation research consists of two different parts. The first part provides an in-depth analysis for the increased crash/near-crash risk associated with different secondary task activities using the largest real-world …
Machine Learning Tools For Optimization Of Fuel Consumption At Signalized Intersections In Connected/Automated Vehicles Environment, Saleh Ragab Mousa
Machine Learning Tools For Optimization Of Fuel Consumption At Signalized Intersections In Connected/Automated Vehicles Environment, Saleh Ragab Mousa
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Researchers continue to seek numerous techniques for making the transportation sector more sustainable in terms of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Among the most effective techniques is Eco-driving at signalized intersections. Eco-driving is a complex control problem where drivers approaching the intersections are guided, over a period of time, to optimize fuel consumption. Eco-driving control systems reduce fuel consumption by optimizing vehicle trajectories near signalized intersections based on information of the SpaT (Signal Phase and Timing). Developing Eco-driving applications for semi-actuated signals, unlike pre-timed, is more challenging due to variations in cycle length resulting from fluctuations in traffic demand. …

© 2018 IBRO Current evidence suggests that the epithelial Na + channel (ENaC) in the brain plays a significant role in the development of hypertension. ENaC is present in vasopressin (VP) neurons in the hypothalamus, suggesting that ENaC in VP neurons is involved in the regulation of blood pressure. Our recent study demonstrated that high dietary salt intake caused an increase in the expression and activity of ENaC that were responsible for the more depolarized basal membrane potential in VP neurons. A known regulator of ENaC expression, the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), is present in VP neurons, suggesting that ENaC expression …

We define the deconstruction cost of a tripartite quantum state on systems ABE as the minimum rate of noise needed to apply to the AE systems, such that there is negligible disturbance to the marginal state on the BE systems, while the system A of the resulting state is locally recoverable from the E system alone. We refer to such actions as deconstruction operations and protocols implementing them as state deconstruction protocols. State deconstruction generalizes Landauer erasure of a single-party quantum state as well the erasure of correlations of a two-party quantum state. We find that the deconstruction cost of …

In the 1960s, Mandelstam proposed a new approach to gauge theories and gravity based on loops. The program was completed for Yang-Mills theories by Gambini and Trias in the 1980s. In this approach, gauge theories could be understood as representations of certain group: the group of loops. The same formalism could not be implemented at that time for the gravitational case. Here we would like to propose an extension to the case of gravity. The resulting theory is described in terms of loops and open paths and can provide the underpinning for a new quantum representation for gravity distinct from …

On 17 August 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories made the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a neutron star binary system. The detection of this gravitational-wave signal, GW170817, offers a novel opportunity to directly probe the properties of matter at the extreme conditions found in the interior of these stars. The initial, minimal-assumption analysis of the LIGO and Virgo data placed constraints on the tidal effects of the coalescing bodies, which were then translated to constraints on neutron star radii. Here, we expand upon previous analyses by working under the hypothesis that both bodies were …

Copyright © 2018 American Chemical Society. NMR and X-ray diffraction studies were conducted on Pt(II)LCl2 complexes prepared with the new N-donor ligands N(SO2R)Mendpa (R = Me, Tol; n = 2, 4). These ligands differ from N(H)dpa (di-2-picolylamine) in having the central N within a tertiary sulfonamide group instead of a secondary amine group and having Me groups at the 6,6′-positions (n = 2) or 3,3′,5,5′-positions (n = 4) of the pyridyl rings. The N(SO2R)3,3′,5,5′-Me4dpa ligands are coordinated in a bidentate fashion in Pt(N(SO2R)3,3′,5,5′-Me4dpa)Cl2 complexes, forming a rare eight-membered chelate ring. Bipartite Quantum Interactions: Entangling And Information Processing Abilities, Siddhartha Das
Bipartite Quantum Interactions: Entangling And Information Processing Abilities, Siddhartha Das
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to advance the theory behind quantum information processing tasks, by deriving fundamental limits on bipartite quantum interactions and dynamics. A bipartite quantum interaction corresponds to an underlying Hamiltonian that governs the physical transformation of a two-body open quantum system. Under such an interaction, the physical transformation of a bipartite quantum system is considered in the presence of a bath, which may be inaccessible to an observer. The goal is to determine entangling abilities of such arbitrary bipartite quantum interactions. Doing so provides fundamental limitations on information processing tasks, including entanglement distillation and secret key …
Economic Approaches And Market Structures For Temporal-Spatial Spectrum Sharing, Feixiang Zhang
Economic Approaches And Market Structures For Temporal-Spatial Spectrum Sharing, Feixiang Zhang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In wireless communication systems, economic approaches can be applied to spectrum sharing and enhance spectrum utilization.
In this research, we develop a model where geographic information, including licensed areas of primary users (PUs) and locations of secondary users (SUs), plays an important role in the spectrum sharing system. We consider a multi-price policy and the pricing power of noncooperative PUs in multiple geographic areas. Meanwhile, the value assessment of a channel is price-related and the demand from the SUs is price-elastic. By applying an evolutionary procedure, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the optimal payoff for each PU selling …
Theoretical Studies Of Ultrafast Electron Dynamics In Atoms And Molecules Via High-Order Harmonic Generation, Paul Vincent Abanador
Theoretical Studies Of Ultrafast Electron Dynamics In Atoms And Molecules Via High-Order Harmonic Generation, Paul Vincent Abanador
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The interaction of atoms and molecules with strong laser pulses is of fundamental interest in physics and chemistry. Notably, the process known as high-order harmonic generation (HHG) refers to the production of extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) light, which occurs when an ensemble of atoms or molecules is subjected to a strong infrared laser field. Characterized by an attosecond time scale (1 as = 10-18 s), the HHG process provides the capability for experimental measurements to capture the ultrafast motion of electrons in these target atoms and molecules. The underlying physical mechanism behind this process naturally leaves imprints in the properties of …
Genome-Wide Screening Identifies Genes And Biological Processes Implicated In Chemoresistance And Oncogene-Induced Apoptosis, Tengyu Ko
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Anti-proliferative responses such as senescence and apoptosis are often used by normal cells to combat oncogenic insults and to prevent tumorigenesis. However, oncogenic mutations are frequently found in cancers, suggesting that additional mutations may occur to facilitate the bypass of these anti-proliferative responses. It is believed that some of these additional mutations may also contribute to the chemoresistance of cancers. This dissertation focused on identifying novel genes and biological processes implicated in chemoresistance and tumorigenesis.
Cisplatin-based chemotherapeutic regimens are frequently used for treatments of solid tumors. However, tumor cells may have inherent or acquired resistance to cisplatin, and the underlying …

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. The uranium (U) isotopic composition (δ238U) of limestones is increasingly used to quantitatively track changes in paleoredox conditions of the global ocean. However, many limestones have undergone significant dolomitization during diagenesis. To assess the potential impact of diagenetic changes on the U isotope composition of dolomitized rocks, we examined the uranium isotopic composition of a Jurassic carbonate platform of the Franconian Alb in Southern Germany. This platform underwent dolomitization during shallow burial due to the supply of magnesium-rich fluids in the form of slightly modified seawater. This type of dolomitization is common in the geologic record. …

Deep neural networks trained over large datasets learn features that are both generic to the whole dataset, and specific to individual classes in the dataset. Learned features tend towards generic in the lower layers and specific in the higher layers of a network. Methods like fine-tuning are made possible because of the ability for one filter to apply to multiple target classes. Much like the human brain this behavior, can also be used to cluster and separate classes. However, to the best of our knowledge there is no metric for how applicable learned features are to specific classes. In this …

Recently, a coding technique called position-based coding has been used to establish achievability statements for various kinds of classical communication protocols that use quantum channels. In the present paper, we apply this technique in the entanglement-assisted setting in order to establish lower bounds for error exponents, lower bounds on the second-order coding rate, and one-shot lower bounds. We also demonstrate that position-based coding can be a powerful tool for analyzing other communication settings. In particular, we reduce the quantum simultaneous decoding conjecture for entanglement-assisted or unassisted communication over a quantum multiple access channel to open questions in multiple quantum hypothesis …
