© 2019 Pu et al. Comprehensive characterization of ligand-binding sites is invaluable to infer molecular functions of hypothetical proteins, trace evolutionary relationships between proteins, engineer enzymes to achieve a desired substrate specificity, and develop drugs with improved selectivity profiles. These research efforts pose significant challenges owing to the fact that similar pockets are commonly observed across different folds, leading to the high degree of promiscuity of ligand-protein interactions at the system-level. On that account, novel algorithms to accurately classify binding sites are needed. Deep learning is attracting a significant attention due to its successful applications in a wide range of …

M subdwarfs are low-metallicity M dwarfs that typically inhabit the halo population of the Galaxy. Metallicity controls the opacity of stellar atmospheres; in metal-poor stars, hydrostatic equilibrium is reached at a smaller radius, leading to smaller radii for a given effective temperature. We compile a sample of 88 stars that span spectral classes K7 to M6 and include stars with metallicity classes from solar-metallicity dwarf stars to the lowest metallicity ultra subdwarfs to test how metallicity changes the stellar radius. We fit models to Palomar Double Spectrograph (DBSP) optical spectra to derive effective temperatures (T eff ) and we measure …

We report the discovery of a low-mass-ratio planet (q = 1.3 × 10 -4 ), i.e., 2.5 times higher than the Neptune/Sun ratio. The planetary system was discovered from the analysis of the KMT-2017-BLG-0165 microlensing event, which has an obvious short-term deviation from the underlying light curve produced by the host of the planet. Although the fit improvement with the microlens parallax effect is relatively low, one component of the parallax vector is strongly constrained from the light curve, making it possible to narrow down the uncertainties of the lens physical properties. A Bayesian analysis yields that the planet has …

The adiabatic temperature change (Δ Tad) in Ni45Mn43CoSn11 has been measured by a direct method in magnetic field changes up to 14 T. Large reversible magnetocaloric effects resulting in Δ Tad of about =-11 and 5 K have been observed for magnetic field changes of 14 T at the magnetostructural (TA ∼ 260 K) and magnetic transitions (TC ∼ 320 K), respectively. The impact of the thermomagnetic history on Δ Tad at high magnetic fields has been reported. The significant observed changes in the relaxation time of Δ Tad, depending on the type of the phase transitions, magnetization, and demagnetization …

A series of rare-earth-doped Ni43-xRxMn46Sn11 (x= 0, 1 and R = Pr, Gd, Ho, Er) alloys was fabricated by arc melting, and their structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties were studied through room temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry, and magnetization measurements. Analysis of XRD data reveal that the alloys crystallize in the cubic L21 austenite phase structure as the major phase with a small trace of martensitic phase (MP). The martensitic transition temperature (TM) shifts to consecutive higher temperatures with the substitution of Pr, Gd, Ho, and Er. A drastic shift in TM by 60 K relative to the …

We present a practical diagnostic for quantifying changes to the supercontinuum spectrum of an ultrashort laser pulse undergoing nonlinear propagation. The method allows a connection to be made between a nonlinear physics phenomenon and the specific regions of the angular spectrum that it affects. We apply this method to investigate interference between third-harmonic generation and self-phase modulation.

The long baseline between Earth and the Sun makes solar neutrinos an excellent test beam for exploring possible neutrino decay. The signature of such decay would be an energy-dependent distortion of the traditional survival probability which can be fit for using well-developed and high-precision analysis methods. Here a model including neutrino decay is fit to all three phases of B8 solar neutrino data taken by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). This fit constrains the lifetime of neutrino mass state ν2 to be >8.08×10-5 s/eV at 90% confidence. An analysis combining this SNO result with those from other solar neutrino experiments …

© 2019 Picardo et al. Inspiratory breathing movements depend on pre-Bötzinger complex (preBötC) interneurons that express calcium (Ca 2+ )-activated nonselective cationic current (I CAN ) to generate robust neural bursts. Hypothesized to be rhythmogenic, reducing I CAN is predicted to slow down or stop breathing; its contributions to motor pattern would be reflected in the magnitude of movements (output). We tested the role(s) of I CAN using reverse genetic techniques to diminish its putative ion channels Trpm4 or Trpc3 in preBötC neurons in vivo. Adult mice transduced with Trpm4-targeted short hairpin RNA (shRNA) progressively decreased the tidal volume of …

The global population growth of the bed bug, Cimex lectularius (L.), is attributed to their cryptic behavior, diverse insecticide resistance mechanisms, and lack of public awareness. Bed bug control can be challenging and typically requires chemical and non-chemical treatments. One common non-chemical method for bed bug management is thermal remediation. However, in certain instances, bed bugs are known to survive heat treatments. Bed bugs may be present after a heat treatment due to (i) abiotic factors associated with the inability to achieve lethal temperatures in harborage areas for a sufficient time period, (ii) re-infestation from insects that escaped to cooler …

High blood pressure (BP) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is more prevalent in African Americans as compared to other US groups. Although large, population-based genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified over 300 common polymorphisms modulating inter-individual BP variation, largely in European ancestry subjects, most of them do not localize to regions previously identified through family-based linkage studies. This discrepancy has remained unexplained despite the statistical power differences between current GWAS and prior linkage studies. To address this issue, we performed genome-wide linkage analysis of BP traits in African-American families from the Family Blood Pressure Program …

In Situ Geochemistry Of Middle Ordovician Dolomites Of The Upper Mississippi Valley, Achim D. Herrmann
Faculty Publications
The dolomitization and diagenetic history of Ordovician carbonates of southern Wisconsin is complex. Previous studies attributed dolomitization to various diagenetic factors and environments. In this study, high-resolution, in situ laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry analysis of rare earth element patterns of dolomite was used to assess the diagenetic fluids responsible for dolomitization of the Ordovician Decorah Formation. Integrated geochemical data and petrographic evidence suggest that the dolostones are formed in two different diagenetic realms: shallow burial and hydrothermal. Shallow burial dolomites exhibit three distinct rare earth element patterns. Dolomite from the middle portion of the Guttenberg Member exhibits light …

Investigations focusing on host-ectoparasite interactions in animals have revealed asymptomatic to severe health and fitness consequences suggesting that species mobilize different interspecific response mechanisms. Fewer studies, however, have examined intraspecific responses to ectoparasitic burdens. In this study, we analyzed host health and fitness responses to increasing ectoparasite burdens along with the presence/absence of hemoparasites of free-ranging insular rock iguanas (Cyclura cychlura) in The Bahamas. Using hematology, plasma biochemistry, as well as body condition and growth rate comparisons, we failed to find significant associations of tick burdens with annual growth rate, corticosterone, packed cell volume, total white blood cell, and heterophil, …

© 2018 Ocean acidification has the potential to impact the ocean's biogeochemical cycles and food web dynamics, with phytoplankton in the distinctive position to profoundly influence both, as individual phytoplankton species play unique roles in energy flow and element cycling. Previous studies have focused on short-term exposure of monocultures to low pH, but do not reflect the competitive dynamics within natural phytoplankton communities. This study explores the use of experimental microcosms to expose phytoplankton assemblages to elevated pCO2 for an extended period of time. Phytoplankton communities were collected from two biogeochemically distinct Louisiana estuaries, Caillou Lake (CL) and Barataria Bay …

The genetic resources of aquatic biomedical model organisms are the products of millions of years of evolution, decades of scientific development, and hundreds of millions of dollars of research funding investment. Genetic resources (e.g., specific alleles, transgenes, or combinations) of each model organism can be considered a form of scientific wealth that can be accumulated and exchanged, typically in the form of live animals or germplasm. Large-scale maintenance of live aquatic organisms that carry these genetic resources is inefficient, costly, and risky. In situ maintenance may be substantially enhanced and backed up by combining cryopreserved germplasm repositories and genetic information …

Eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) use a polygynous-promiscuous mating system, wherein males compete for mating opportunities and communicate with females via courtship behaviors. One courtship behavior is vocalization (gobbling), which attracts females and signals dominance to other males. However, temporal variation in gobbling activity may be influenced by external stimuli, environmental variation, and hunter activity. Gobbling activity is a key determinant of hunter satisfaction, and gobbling chronology is often used by state agencies to inform regulatory processes. To identify factors influencing gobbling activity, we evaluated daily gobbling chronology on 3 sites in South Carolina, USA (Webb Wildlife Management Area …

Soil and water salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses that reduce growth and productivity in major food crops including rice. The lack of congruence of salt tolerance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in multiple genetic backgrounds and multiple environments is a major hindrance for undertaking marker-assisted selection (MAS). A genome-wide meta-analysis of QTLs controlling seedling-stage salt tolerance was conducted in rice using QTL information from 12 studies. Using a consensus map, 11 meta-QTLs for three traits with smaller confidence intervals were localized on chromosomes 1 and 2. The phenotypic variance of 3 meta-QTLs was _20%. Based on phenotyping of …

There is a strong belief that Republicans are more pro-business than Democrats. In this paper, we investigate the causal impact of partisan allegiance of governors (Republican or Democratic) on entrepreneurial activity by exploiting random variation in close gubernatorial elections in 50 states over the last three decades in a regression discontinuity design. We find that Republican governors are no different than Democratic governors in their effects on entrepreneurship. Our findings are robust to several sensitivity checks.

The slit-shaped, lack-of-fusion pores (LFPs) persistent in the additively manufactured (AM) metals are detrimental to their fatigue resistance due to the associated stress concentrations at the edges. Postbuild treatments, such as hot isostatic pressing (HIP), are routinely used to eliminate pores resulting in, however, inconsistent improvements in fatigue performance. This work critically examines the effectiveness of HIP to eliminate such pores in AM Ti-6Al-4V. In addition, conventional heat treatment (HT) is proposed as a candidate remedial process to alleviate the harmful effects of the LFPs. Specifically, the spheroidization effect of HT on the sharp edges of the LFPs is investigated. …

The influence of misalignment on a dynamically-loaded engine bearing is investigated using a mass-conserving cavitation algorithm. Whereas in statically loaded bearings misalignment can be conveniently characterized using two parameters known as the degree of misalignment DM and the misalignment angle α an alternative approach is needed when the load changes direction. In this paper, the complication is treated by representing the severity of misalignment using two deflection angles θx and θy since these deflection angles remain constant in an engine bearing during operation. A 3D porous matrix makes an intriguing sensing platform, which can integrate functional guest molecules. Here, the first demonstration of a zinc compound/silicone hybrid foam is reported for amperometric sensing of glucose oxidase. The silicone foam is fabricated by a self-developed solid-filling-melting method. Two zinc-based polymers, Zn-Compound-1 and Zn-Compound-2, are synthesized. Zn-Compound-1 and Zn-Compound-2 are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption nearedge structure spectroscopy of carbon K-edge, oxygen K-edge, and zinc L-edge. Effective amperometric sensing of glucose oxidase is achieved by introducing Zn-Compound-1 or Zn-Compound-2 into the silicone foam, i.e., an …

Spatial spectrum reuse enables better utilization of limited spectral resources to achieve higher system throughput. However, improving the system throughput or spectrum efficiency does not necessarily translate to the satisfaction of more secondary users (SUs) according to their demands. To improve user satisfaction, user characteristics involving the supply and demand relationship need to be considered and thus enable heterogeneous channel valuations in spatial spectrum reuse. In this paper, we design a channel transaction mechanism for non-symmetric networks and maximize user satisfaction in consideration of multi-level flexible channel valuations of the SUs. Specifically, we introduce a Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) auction, in which …
