© 2018 Elsevier Ltd This study of the seismic geomorphology of riverine deposits describes and discusses the spatial resolution at which we can detect fluvial features and how the subsequently collected data can help with our understanding of ancient fluvial reservoirs. For this assessment we use three dimensional seismic reflection data, borehole data from ancient deposits in the Marañón foredeep basin of Peru, as well as digital elevation and satellite imagery data from the present day fluvial systems of the Amazonian Basin in the same area of Peru. Based on seismic stratigraphic principles on amplitude display we test parameters to …

© 2019 the American Physiological Society. previously showed that mice deficient in apo-ptosis signal-regulating kinase-1 (ASK1) were partially protected against ventilator-induced lung injury. Because ASK1 can promote both cell death and inflammation, we hypothesized that ASK1 activation regulates inflammasome-mediated inflammation. Mice deficient in ASK1 expression (ASK1 +/+ ) exhibited significantly less inflammation and lung injury (as measured by neutrophil infiltration, IL-6, and IL-1β) in response to treatment with inhaled lipopolysaccharide (LPS) compared with wild-type (WT) mice. To determine whether this proinflammatory response was mediated by ASK1, we investigated inflammasome-mediated responses to LPS in primary macrophages and bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) …

Doxorubicin (DOX), a powerful anthracycline antibiotic commonly used to treat a wide variety of cancers, is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species that cause oxidative damage, resulting in cardiac dysfunction. Components of dairy may have protective effects against DOX-induced cardiac damage. Kefir is a naturally fermented milk product containing antioxidants, probiotic bacteria, and yeast in addition to the protective components of dairy. We explored the effects of dietary milk and kefir on DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. We used singly housed, 10-wk-old male Sprague Dawley rats assigned to 1 of 3 isocaloric diets, control (CON n = 24), milk …

The Spatial Distribution Of Poverty And The Long Reach Of The Industrial Makeup Of Places: New Evidence On Spatial And Temporal Regimes, Katherine J. Curtis, Junho Lee, Heather A. O'Connell, Jun Zhu

A wealth of research identifies industrial structure as a central correlate of place-level poverty and suggests that changes in and the clustering of industry contribute to the spatial clustering of poverty over time. However, few studies have investigated the spatial and temporal dimensions simultaneously, and none have effectively examined spatiotemporal interactions. Consequently, a core tenet of theory on poverty in place has not been adequately examined. To address this limitation, we explicitly test hypotheses about systematic variation in the poverty-industry relationship over time and across space using a new method to quantify dynamic associations by simultaneously accounting for spatial and …

Magnetic Properties Of Feni3 Nanoparticle Modified Pinus Radiata Wood Nanocomposites, Li Li Wang, Na Li, Tiqi Zhao, Bin Li, Yali Ji
Faculty Publications
Magnetic FeNi3 nanoparticles were synthesized in the internal structure of wood through an in situ fabrication approach. The morphology, crystalline phase and chemical composition of the FeNi3 modified wood was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). SEM confirmed that the magnetic nanoparticles were densely dispersed in the wood matrix. The magnetic hysteresis loops showed that the magnetism of composites is dependent on the amount of FeNi3 loading. The saturation magnetization of magnetic wood increases from 6.3 to 10.8 emu/g with an …

Let M be a 3-connected binary matroid; M is internally 4-connected if one side of every 3-separation is a triangle or a triad, and M is (4,4,S)-connected if one side of every 3-separation is a triangle, a triad, or a 4-element fan. Assume M is internally 4-connected and that neither M nor its dual is a cubic Möbius or planar ladder or a certain coextension thereof. Let N be an internally 4-connected proper minor of M. Our aim is to show that M has a proper internally 4-connected minor with an N-minor that can be obtained from M either by …

Rapid Daily Change In Surface Water Pco 2 And Co 2 Evasion: A Case Study In A Subtropical Eutrophic Lake In Southern Usa, Y. Jun Xu, Zhen Xu, Rongjie Yang
Faculty Publications
Evasion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from lakes is a significant component in the continental carbon balance, but most current CO 2 evasion estimates ignore daily CO 2 fluctuations. To test the hypothesis that partial pressure of CO 2 (pCO 2 ) and CO 2 evasion vary throughout a day due to biological processes driven by solar radiation, we conducted in-situ pCO 2 and ambient water measurements over eleven 10-h periods in a subtropical, eutrophic shallow lake from November 2017 to May 2018. In-situ measurements were performed at 7:00, 10:00, 14:00, and 17:00 Central Standard Time of the United …

Applications Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles To Survey Mesocarnivores, Jacob D. Bushaw, Kevin M. Ringelman, Frank C. Rohwer
Faculty Publications
With the widespread extirpation of top predators over the past two centuries, mesocarnivores play an increasingly important role in structuring terrestrial trophic webs. However, mesocarnivores are difficult to survey at a population level because their widely spaced territories and nocturnal behavior result in low detection probability. Existing field survey techniques such as track plates and motion-sensitive camera traps are time-consuming and expensive, and yet still yield data prone to systematic errors. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have recently emerged as a new tool for conducting population surveys on a wide variety of wildlife, eclipsing the efficiency and even accuracy of traditional …

Watershed-Scale Retrospective Drought Analysis And Seasonal Forecasting Using Multi-Layer, High-Resolution Simulated Soil Moisture For Southeastern U.S, Vinit Sehgal, Venkataramana Sridhar
Faculty Publications
Drought assessment at local scales needs a reliable framework capturing both local landscape processes and the watershed-scale hydrological responses. Any such tool, implementable in a near real-time, semi-automated framework, is largely unavailable for the South Atlantic-Gulf (SAG) region in the Southeastern US (SEUS). In this study, we evaluate a drought monitoring and forecasting approach using multi-layer, high resolution, simulated soil moisture for 50 watersheds in the SEUS. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is integrated with meteorological drivers (precipitation and temperature) from Climate Forecast System Reanalysis data (CFSR) for retrospective simulations (January 1982–December 2013), and Climate forecast system model version-2 …

© 2019 The Oceanography Society, Inc. Small marginal sea basins are often short-lived and typically not older than several to tens of million years, but they play critical roles in global plate tectonic cycles. This paper highlights some recent achievements in answering a range of geodynamic questions stemming from scientific ocean drilling by International Ocean Discovery Program Expeditions 349, 367, 368, and 368X in the South China Sea. Together, results from these expeditions provide new insights into continental breakup in terms of the opening style and time of spreading cessation, magmatism, and sedimentation during the formation of this marginal basin. …
Robust Resource Allocation With Imperfect Channel Estimation In Noma-Based Heterogeneous Vehicular Networks, Shengjie Guo, Xiangwei Zhou
Robust Resource Allocation With Imperfect Channel Estimation In Noma-Based Heterogeneous Vehicular Networks, Shengjie Guo, Xiangwei Zhou
Faculty Publications
In heterogeneous vehicular networks, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with effective resource allocation improves spectrum efficiency by allowing multiple users to share the same channel. However, channel estimation errors caused by high mobility in vehicular networks affect system robustness and link reliability. As a result, resource allocation in high-mobility scenarios is a challenging issue. In this paper, robust resource allocation is studied to improve both the throughput performance and reliability of NOMA-based heterogeneous vehicular networks. A cascaded Hungarian channel assignment algorithm is proposed to simplify the formulated resource allocation problem with reliability requirements into a robust power allocation problem with chance …

Voc Emission Factors From 3d Printers - Abs (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) Type Filaments, Dean Lay
LSU Master's Theses
Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is a polymer that is widely used in many plastic products and is receiving new attention due to its use as a filament for fused deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printers. It has been shown to emit potentially dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when heated at temperatures used in the 3D printing process. Many new products are becoming available that contain various additives to the polymer matrix, which have an unknown effect on the emission profiles and rates. In this study a method is developed using a modified system for thermal diagnostic studies (STDS) to evaluate VOC emission from …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Intertwined Markings: Metafiction in the Digital Age maps the historical and thematic relationship between video games and contemporary works of metafiction first by detailing the intertwined histories of video games and contemporary metafiction, and then by applying new materialist and game studies methodologies to both video games and contemporary novels. Not only does the height of postmodern metafiction directly coincide with the introduction of home consoles and the golden age of arcade video games in the 1970s, but the same postmodern works considered to be canonical in metafiction studies are also those lauded as the first hypertexts in new media …

Evaluation Of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material In Seafood From The Gulf Of Mexico, Charles Algeo Wilson Iv
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Radioactive disintegration of naturally occurring radioactive material was modeled with high precision and no assumptions to better understand serial decay in high order disequibrlia. This model helped develop a new method of quick analysis of NORM, where radioactivity can be measured with reasonable certainty before secular equilibrium is established. This approach was a significant improvement on previous similar approaches, halving time required for the same results and reduced wait time compared to classical approaches by 92%. Consequentially, NORM was measured in selected seafood samples from three areas in the Gulf of Mexico. Red Snapper, Red Drum, Northern Whiting, Spotted Trout …
