© 2019 The Author(s). Evolution © 2019 The Society for the Study of Evolution. The virulence–transmission trade-off hypothesis proposed more than 30 years ago is the cornerstone in the study of host–parasite co-evolution. This hypothesis rests on the premise that virulence is an unavoidable and increasing cost because the parasite uses host resources to replicate. This cost associated with replication ultimately results in a deceleration in transmission rate because increasing within-host replication increases host mortality. Empirical tests of predictions of the hypothesis have found mixed support, which cast doubt about its overall generalizability. To quantitatively address this issue, we conducted …

Authigenic low-magnesium calcite (LMC)—a mineral phase that should precipitate in calcite seas rather than today’s aragonite sea—was recently discovered at the seafloor of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) at water depths of 65 m (site SS296) and 189 m (site GC53). This study investigates the mineralogical, petrographic, and geochemical characteristics of LMC from both sites to reveal its formation process. The δ O values of LMC from site SS296 cluster in two groups (−0.6% to 1.7‰; 6.3‰ to 7.5‰) and the presence of cone-in-cone texture in the samples with lower δ O values suggest precipitation at higher temperatures and greater …

[Formula Presented] Interior Penalty Methods For An Elliptic State-Constrained Optimal Control Problem With Neumann Boundary Condition, Susanne C. Brenner, Li Yeng Sung, Yi Zhang

Faculty Publications

We study [Formula presented] interior penalty methods for an elliptic optimal control problem with pointwise state constraints on two dimensional convex polygonal domains. The approximation of the optimal state is obtained by solving a fourth order variational inequality and the approximation of the optimal control is computed by a post-processing procedure. We prove the convergence of numerical solutions with rates in the [Formula presented]-like energy error by using the complementarity form of the variational inequality. Furthermore, we develop an a posteriori analysis for a residual based error estimator and introduce an adaptive algorithm. Numerical experiments are provided to gauge the …

We report on 13 new high-precision measurements of stellar diameters for low-mass dwarfs obtained by means of near-infrared long-baseline interferometry with PIONIER at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Together with accurate parallaxes from Gaia DR2, these measurements provide precise estimates for their linear radii, effective temperatures, masses, and luminosities. This allows us to refine the effective temperature scale, in particular towards the coolest M-dwarfs. We measure for late-type stars with enhanced metallicity slightly inflated radii, whereas for stars with decreased metallicity we measure smaller radii. We further show that Gaia DR2 effective temperatures for M-dwarfs are underestimated by ∼8.2 per …

An Exact Solution Of Spherical Mean-Field Plus Orbit-Dependent Non-Separable Pairing Model With Two Non-Degenerate J-Orbits, Feng Pan, Shuli Yuan, Yingwen He, Yunfeng Zhang, Siyu Yang, J. P. Draayer Apr 2019

An Exact Solution Of Spherical Mean-Field Plus Orbit-Dependent Non-Separable Pairing Model With Two Non-Degenerate J-Orbits, Feng Pan, Shuli Yuan, Yingwen He, Yunfeng Zhang, Siyu Yang, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

An exact solution of nuclear spherical mean-field plus orbit-dependent non-separable pairing model with two non-degenerate j-orbits is presented. The extended one-variable Heine–Stieltjes polynomials associated to the Bethe ansatz equations of the solution are determined, of which the sets of the zeros give the solution of the model, and can be determined relatively easily. A comparison of the solution to that of the standard pairing interaction with constant interaction strength among pairs in any orbit is made. It is shown that the overlaps of eigenstates of the model with those of the standard pairing model are always large, especially for the …

Leonard, Jeffrey Karpicke, Patricia Deevy, Christine Weber, Sharon Christ, Eileen Haebig, Sofía Souto, Justin B. Kueser, Windi Krok

Faculty Publications

Purpose: Scholars have long noted that retention improves significantly when learners frequently test themselves on the new material rather than engage in continuous study with no intermittent testing. In this study, we apply the notion of repeated testing or retrieval to the process of word learning in preschool-age children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD). Method: Novel words and their meanings were taught to 10 children with DLD and 10 typically developing (TD) children matched on age (DLD, M = 63.4 months; TD, M = 63.2 months). Recall was assessed immediately after the 2nd learning session and then again …

Leonard, Patricia Deevy, Jeffrey Karpicke, Sharon L. Christ, Evan Usler, Justin B. Kueser, Sofía Souto, Windi Krok, Christine Weber

Faculty Publications

Purpose: Retrieval practice has been found to be a powerful strategy to enhance long-term retention of new information; however, the utility of retrieval practice when teaching young children new words is largely unknown, and even less is known for young children with language impairments. The current study examined the effect of 2 different retrieval schedules on word learning at both the behavioral and neural levels. Method: Participants included 16 typically developing children (MTD = 61.58 months) and 16 children with developmental language disorder (MDLD = 59.60 months). Children participated in novel word learning sessions in which the spacing of retrieval …

Influence Of Spatial Camera Resolution In Highspeed Videoendoscopy On Laryngeal Parameters, Patrick Schlegel, Melda Kunduk, Michael Stingl, Marion Semmler, Michael Döllinger, Christopher Bohr, Anne Schützenberger

Faculty Publications

In laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) the area between the vibrating vocal folds during phonation is of interest, being referred to as glottal area waveform (GAW). Varying camera resolution may influence parameters computed on the GAW and hence hinder the comparability between examinations. This study investigates the influence of spatial camera resolution on quantitative vocal fold vibratory function parameters obtained from the GAW. In total 40 HSV recordings during sustained phonation (20 healthy males and 20 healthy females) were investigated. A clinically used Photron Fastcam MC2 camera with a frame rate of 4000 fps and a spatial resolution of 512×256 pixels …

Evaluation Of Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis For The Assessment Of Body Composition In Individuals With Obesity, P. A. Sullivan, C. D. Still, S. T. Jamieson, C. B. Dixon, B. A. Irving, J. L. Andreacci

Faculty Publications

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare body composition measurements estimated by multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MF-BIA) with air displacement plethysmography (ADP) in individuals with obesity. Methods: Bariatric patients were recruited from Geisinger's Center for Nutrition and Weight Management Clinic in Danville, Pennsylvania. Sixty-two participants (age = 52.4 ± 9.3 years; body mass index = 38.9 ± 8.0 kg m−2) reported for a same-day testing visit. Body composition was measured using a common MF-BIA analyzer (InBody 720, Biospace Co., Beverly Hills, CA) and ADP. Results: Strong relationships were observed between MF-BIA and ADP methods (r = 0.88–0.96, P < 0.001). There were no differences between MF-BIA and ADP measures of per cent body fat, fat mass or fat-free mass for the total sample or when examined by gender. Conclusions: The InBody 720 MF-BIA analyzer produced body composition measurements that were similar to ADP supporting the use of this technology in the obese population.

Key message: The optimization of training populations and the use of diagnostic markers as fixed effects increase the predictive ability of genomic prediction models in a cooperative wheat breeding panel. Abstract: Plant breeding programs often have access to a large amount of historical data that is highly unbalanced, particularly across years. This study examined approaches to utilize these data sets as training populations to integrate genomic selection into existing pipelines. We used cross-validation to evaluate predictive ability in an unbalanced data set of 467 winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes evaluated in the Gulf Atlantic Wheat Nursery from 2008 to …

Impostor Phenomenon Responses Of Early Career Music Education Faculty, Wendy L. Sims, Jane W. Cassidy

Faculty Publications

This study was designed to examine to the extent to which impostor feelings, symptomatic of the psychological condition impostor phenomenon (IP), would be evident in early career university-level music educators. Those experiencing IP are typically successful individuals yet with impostor feelings that may include debilitating psychological effects related to an irrational fear of failure and exposure as a “fraud.” Participants were post–doctoral degree music education faculty in their first 4 years of full-time college teaching (N = 54). They responded to the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale and to scales adapted for faculty roles of undergraduate teaching, graduate teaching, and research. …

Towards Reliable Uncertainties In Ir Interferometry: The Bootstrap For Correlated Statistical And Systematic Errors, Régis Lachaume, Markus Rabus, Andrés Jordán, Rafael Brahm, Tabetha Boyajian, Kaspar Von Braun, Jean Philippe Berger Apr 2019

Towards Reliable Uncertainties In Ir Interferometry: The Bootstrap For Correlated Statistical And Systematic Errors, Régis Lachaume, Markus Rabus, Andrés Jordán, Rafael Brahm, Tabetha Boyajian, Kaspar Von Braun, Jean Philippe Berger

Faculty Publications

We propose a method to overcome the usual limitation of current data processing techniques in optical and infrared long-baseline interferometry: most reduction pipelines assume uncorrelated statistical errors and ignore systematics. We use the bootstrap method to sample the multivariate probability density function of the interferometric observables. It allows us to determine the correlations between statistical error terms and their deviation from a Gaussian distribution. In addition, we introduce systematics as an additional, highly correlated error term whose magnitude is chosen to fit the data dispersion. We have applied the method to obtain accurate measurements of stellar diameters for underresolved stars, …

Demystifying Jadeite: An Underwater Maya Discovery At Ek Way Nal, Belize, Heather Mckillop, George Harlow, April Sievert, C. Wayne Smith, Michael C. Wiemann

Faculty Publications

Jadeite artefacts at Maya sites are normally associated with ritual and ceremonial locations, with high-quality jadeite reserved for elite objects. The discovery of a jadeite gouge with a wooden handle at a Classic Maya salt-working site submerged by sea-level rise - Ek Way Nal, Belize - is therefore unexpected and provides new information about the utilitarian use of this stone. The extremely high quality of this jadeite tool is particularly surprising, offering new insight into the Classic Maya exchange systems and the role of salt makers such as those based at Ek Way Nal.

Flux Of Inorganic Carbon As Dissolved, Suspended, And Bed Loads Through A Karstic Basin, Randall Paylor, Carol Wicks Apr 2019

Flux Of Inorganic Carbon As Dissolved, Suspended, And Bed Loads Through A Karstic Basin, Randall Paylor, Carol Wicks

Faculty Publications

© 2019 by the authors. Most studies of carbonate bedrock weathering have focused on the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) flux while dismissing particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) as insignificant. However, under certain flow conditions PIC flux may be an important term in carbonate weathering. In this study, the total inorganic carbon (TIC) flux was calculated in a fluviokarst basin. Water samples and in situ data loggers were used to determine suspended sediment concentration and water chemistry. The mass of PIC within suspended sediments was quantified by cation/anion analysis of dual filtered/unfiltered samples. The flux of bed load material was calculated via …

Numerical Modeling And Analysis Of Induced Thermal Stress For A Non-Isothermal Wellbore Strengthening Process, Ze Wang, Mingzheng Yang, Yuanhang Chen Apr 2019

Numerical Modeling And Analysis Of Induced Thermal Stress For A Non-Isothermal Wellbore Strengthening Process, Ze Wang, Mingzheng Yang, Yuanhang Chen

Faculty Publications

Wellbore strengthening (WBS) methods are broadly applied in the field to combat lost circulation by plugging drilling induced fractures using wellbore strengthening materials (WSM). While changes in formation temperature during drilling have been identified as an important factor in wellbore stability considerations, the performance of WBS in a non-isothermal setting is unclear and remains as a barrier to successful designs of the types and sizes of WSMs. To understand the problem, a 3D finite element analysis was conducted to investigate the state of stresses in near-wellbore region from the interaction between induced thermal stresses and fractures based on different WBS …
