This dissertation brings a disaggregated structural approach to bear on two dependent variables--trade protectionism and interstate war. In trade, I utilize cross-sectional data on tariffs and non-tariff barriers to test the theory that states are positional actors who use protectionist measures in an attempt to acquire or defend comparative advantage in industrial sectors. States and two-digit SITC industrial sectors are positioned in the international division of labor. A model is developed that predicts how states should distribute their protection across sectors if protection is a function of state positionality, as opposed to state institutions or other non-structural variables. This dissertation examines the subject of political and social power in the plays and prose of John Arden and selected works co-authored by Arden and his wife, Margaretta D'Arcy. Particular focus is given to the institution of Christianity and how it may either be used as a tool for the maintenance of established authority or as a vehicle for rebellion. Arden's collected essays, along with a personal interview conducted in August of 1990, provide the starting point for a discussion of four specific works, pieces in which Arden most closely explores the political involvement of Christianity. The army of the Habsburg Monarchy was the central institution of the Habsburg state, and it embodied the ideal of non-national, dynastic rule. The army leadership was aware of the dangers of nationalism, but in the period between the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the revolutions of 1848, no attempt was made to overcome the danger of national disaffection. The revolutions of 1848 caused the army to remove Hungarian and Italian units from their homelands, but, despite the suspicion in which they were held, these troops fought well in the wars of 1859 and 1866. Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun allegorically represents the crisis of civil order in the American Republic in the 1850s foreshadowing the Civil War that erupted a year after the novel's publication. Hawthorne's last completed romance, set in Rome, suggests Americans must judge themselves against the community and continuity embodied in the European culture they had recently cast off. Challenging Emerson's doctrine that man may have an original relationship to history and the Creator, Hawthorne undermines the Founders' great idea: that an assembly of men could discover and formulate--in an act of the human mind--self-evident, inalienable rights that govern political and …

Although most readers of T. S. Eliot have agreed that the European experience of world war and the resultant political and cultural dislocations provided an important context and source of imagery for much of his work, what has not been recognized is Eliot's use of figures of war to represent the intimate yet antagonistic relations between the poet's writing of modernity and the text that is history. Christopher Marlowe created Renaissance drama as we think of it today. Marlowe's princely protagonists are studied here not as sovereigns responsible for the general well-being of their subjects, but as ambitious characters who use power to control their personal environment. Seen from this viewpoint, the dramatic function of the central characters is either to develop a new stance toward the idea of public authority or to refashion an old one. This geographical study of piracy in Spanish America spans from 1536, the beginning date of sustained piratical activity there, to the near dispersion of pirate forces by 1718. It identifies and relates the operations of sixteenth-century corsairs such as Francis Drake, seventeenth-century buccaneers such as Henry Morgan, and eighteenth-century freebooters such as 'Blackbeard'. Regional coverage focuses on Middle America with an occasional foray into the South Sea. The principal national agents considered are English, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Throughout history, people speculated that an association existed between nutrition and disease prevention. Recently, studies have examined the influence of single nutrients on immunological mechanisms, but with limited focus on marginal deficiencies. This project investigated the effects of severe, marginal, and adequate levels of dietary magnesium and copper on immune function. Three experiments were conducted, with 100 gm male rats consuming one treatment diet for three, four or eight weeks. Mineral levels used were: (1) magnesium--50 ug/gm, 160 ug/gm, 280 ug/gm, 400 ug/gm; (2) copper--0.5 ug/gm, 2.0 ug/gm, 3.5 ug/gm, 5.0 ug/gm; or (3) a combination of the severely deficient …

When Franklin D. Roosevelt entered the White House in 1933, the leaders of the Army Air Corps wanted to create an independent air force. Using Billy Mitchell's tactics of public confrontation, exploitation of the Air Corps' poor condition and unproven claims about air power, these officers only antagonized the people who could grant them independence. After 1934, Oscar Westover, H. H. "Hap" Arnold, Frank Andrews, and a number of other Air Corps officers started a concerted effort to promote themselves as "team players" who had given up Mitchell's methods. Present-day, operational, upper-ocean, thermal-structure forecast models consist of mixed-layer models with local wind-generated horizontal and vertical advection. To extend their applicability into dynamically active regions, e.g. western boundary current regions, the next generation models are envisioned to include mesoscale advection provided by high horizontal resolution circulation nowcast and, eventually forecast models. In this study, I consider the impact of this additional component of advection in a representative dynamic ocean region. I perform four experiments using a modified version of an operational, upper-ocean, thermal prediction model. A major problem in the historiography of slavery in Louisiana is the reliance of too many historians on the early narratives. Because they lack scholarly citations and often contain erroneous information, evaluations of slavery based on these early sources are often inaccurate. By examining four periods of slave unrest in colonial and territorial Louisiana — the 1829-1830 conspiracy known as "Samba’s Revolt," the 1795 conspiracy at Pointe Coupee Parish, the incident of runaway slaves at Natchitoches in 1804, and the 1811 uprising in St. Charles Parish — one can determine how errors in fact, once they enter the history of …

The study of the poetic persona's responses to the experience of failure, as expressed in the poetry of G. M. Hopkins, his minor contemporaries (Francis Thompson and Lionel Johnson), and the moderns (particularly Dylan Thomas), actualizes the poet-text-reader interactions in the reading experience. Chapter one concentrates on the Hopkins persona as he responds to his failures in priesthood and poetry writing, the effects upon the reader, the reader's involvement in the outcome of the poem, and the parallels and divergences between Hopkins and the persona. Textbooks are important representative statements of certified and legitimated knowledge within an academic discipline, and the manner in which introductory sociology textbooks assess society reflect the power and sophistication of theories in discerning social patterns and structures. That the pivotal historical event of the Vietnam War and its implications for contemporary American social institutions was virtually omitted in our sample of one hundred-twenty textbooks raises critical issues for sociology. Content analysis of Vietnam War era textbooks (1954-1975) revealed 75% of the sample, divided among four major research orienting paradigms extant in sociology, ignored mention of the war and only the …

In recent years, Marxist theories have challenged the traditional, meritocratic perspective dominant in the sociology of education. The meritocracy assumes that schools, like the larger society, are based on the premise of equal opportunity; success in school is the result of hard work and good grades, which lead to good jobs and good incomes. Bowles and Gintis, among other revisionists, disagree arguing that the structure of education, sorting students into segregated, hierarchical curriculum tracks, mirrors the structure of the capitalist workplace and reproduces the existing class system such that the most advantaged persons and groups continue to fare well while …

A study combining ignition delay measurements and quenched product distributions from shock-tube experiments with chlorinated hydrocarbons has been conducted to develop a better understanding of the combustion characteristics of these compounds which are candidates for incineration. The ignition delay times of selected C(,1), C(,2) and C(,6) chlorinated hydrocarbon- stoichiometric oxygen mixtures have been measured behind reflected shock waves at a pressure of 1.8 atm over the temperature range 1200-1700K. Studies were also conducted with mixtures of chlorinated and nonchlorinated hydrocarbons to examine the effect of chlorine atom/hydrogen atom ratio on ignition delay behavior. The focus of this research is comprised of two objectives. The first attempts to ethno-historically reconstruct the early historic culture of the Houma Indians of Louisiana based upon seventeenth and eighteenth century archival and documentary sources with attention being paid to such ethnographic aspects as Houma subsistence, social organization, and ceremonialism. The second objective, by way of utilizing additional historical documentation such as early cartographic evidence, predicts and locates historic Houma village sites. An archaeological examination and discussion of these sites is presented in terms of an attempt to diagnostically identify broad ethnic markers within the historic Houma material culture.

Two objectives are undertaken. The first is the identity of the two 18th century archaeological sites at Bayou Goula. A reexamination of the ethnohistorical and -archaeological records of the area reveals that the Bayou Goula site traditionally accepted as an aboriginal village is actually the site of an early French settlement. A second archaeological site recently discovered is hypothesized to be the 1699 village of the Bayogoula and Mugulasha.

The antebellum southern clergy has often been characterized as narrow-minded and reactionary with little or no social vision and with little or no commitment to social reformation. My study, which is based upon an expansive survey of the sermons and religious writings of protestant slave state ministers, reveals instead an insightful, critical, and outspoken clergy determined to change southern society; principally to turn southerners from materialism and greed to spirituality and altruism. Born in the Upson County, Georgia in February 1832, John Brown Gordon attended the University of Georgia, practiced law in Atlanta and, in the years immediately preceding the Civil War, developed coal mines in northwestern Georgia. He responded to the Confederate call to arms by raising a company of volunteers. In spite of his want of formal military schooling, Gordon displayed courage, boldness, vigilance, aggressiveness, and sound military sense on every battlefield upon which he fought. The degree of people's participation in development programs appears to be the major determinant of development successes or failures. However, the strategy which makes participation efforts successful remains a mystery. This study aims to unravel that mystery by investigating factors significantly associated with farmers' participation in rural development programs. Using a probability random sample of 215 households from the rural community in the municipality of Samarinda, Indonesia, this study explores four major groups of variables (social exchange, individualism, social structure, and socio-political atmosphere) as they encompass factors associated with the degree of farmers' participation. A study of John Milton's poetry reveals a pattern of developing theological concepts which in his later years result in unorthodox theological positions: ex Deo creation, mortalism, antitrinitarianism. This theology exists within the structure of free will and rests on the concept of God as Logos. Such theological conclusions as are voiced in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained reflect Milton's vision of man's relationship to God, the nature of God and God's creation, the nature of Sin, and the means whereby man may be saved. This is a study of the Southern Review, a cultural quarterly published at Louisiana State University from 1935 to 1942, and edited by Charles Pipkin, Cleanth Brooks, and Robert Penn Warren. The Review is shown to be an important part of American intellectual history in the thirties and forties, of the Southern Renascence in literature, the history of LSU, and the careers of its editors and contributors. That the Review was more than a literary quarterly (thus the label "cultural quarterly") is evident in its contents.
