Students of American military history tend to focus on the nation’s large-scale, conventional conflicts between peer forces on set-piece battlefields. This focus ignores the salient fact that in the nation’s two hundred forty-plus years, her land forces have spent most of their time and resources in low-intensity conflict: counterinsurgency, counterterrorism, or peacekeeping. That cognitive dissonance makes Robert M. Utley’s new book an interesting and useful contribution. Beyond Freedom grew out of a conference organized by David Blight, Gregory Downs, and Jim Downs at the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition. Each chapter in this short volume aims to raise new questions and provoke new discussions about the field of emancipation. Emancipation studies for the past few decades has been dominated by what the editors call the freedom paradigm, the story of a deeply contested but “ever-expansive concept of freedom”(3).

Gary Ohl’s book on Early American amphibious warfare is a welcome addition to the historiography on this highly specialized aspect of naval warfare. He introduces new concepts or perspectives that I think will assist other scholars in their endeavors. At the same time, he also employs this history in a way that might be very valuable to strategic planners and policymakers. As such, the book is not just history but informed historical policy analysis. The latter, however, may alienate purists as much as it attracts practitioners.

Gis Analysis Of Dvāravatī Dharmacakras And The Rise Of Buddhism In Thailand, Areerut Patnukao

This dissertation explores how GIS as well as spatial and statistical analyses could be used to advance the understanding of Dvāravatī settlement and Dharmacakras locations. The research employs archaeological and geographical parameters to measure and quantify the patterns of Dvāravatī settlements, Dharmacakra locations, their interrelationship, and their relationship with environmental setting. The different types of spatial analyses, parameter settings within each analysis, and approaches are used to examine and explore the differences and commonalities of these variables at three different geographic levels: national, regional, and river basin levels.

Four distinct approaches are incorporated in this study. Chi-Square analysis shows significant …

The struggle for environmental and social justice within American Indian communities is one that has been ongoing since the beginning of United States history, but the main catalyst to effect change and to promote and disperse the American Indian narrative has emerged through the power of social media in today's hyperconnected society. This article examines the power of social media to effect change, as well as a hyperconnected society's ability to empower historically disadvantaged groups that have often been misrepresented within traditional media outlets.
