Let l=k1⋃k2be a 2-component link in S3with k2unknotted. The 2-fold cover of S3branched over k2is again S8; let k1(2) be the inverse image of k1and suppose that k1(2) is connected. How are the signatures σ(k1), σ(K1)(2) of the knots k1and K1(2)related? This question was considered (from a slightly different point of view) by Murasugi, who gave the following answer [Topology, 9 (1970), 283-298]. © 1979, University of California, Berkeley. On A Packing Problem For Infinite Graphs And Independence Spaces, James G. Oxley
On A Packing Problem For Infinite Graphs And Independence Spaces, James G. Oxley
Faculty Publications
In this paper several infinite extensions of the well-known results for packing bases in finite matroids are considered. A counterexample is given to a conjecture of Nash-Williams on edge-disjoint spanning trees of countable graphs, and a sufficient condition is proved for the packing problem in independence spaces over a countably infinite set. © 1979.

Magnetic Susceptibility Anisotropy Measurements Of Coal From The South Wales Coal Field: A Coalification Process Indicator, Brooks B. Ellwood
Magnetic Susceptibility Anisotropy Measurements Of Coal From The South Wales Coal Field: A Coalification Process Indicator, Brooks B. Ellwood
Faculty Publications
Summary. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed on 154 specimens taken from 25 different seams in the South Wales Coal Field, up to 24 samples per seam. The magnetic fabric determined is represented, in general, by oblate spheroids with minimum (Kc) AMS axes usually clustered at a near‐vertical, or occasionally, near‐horizontal pole which is normal to the magnetic foliation plane defined by great circle distributions of maximum (Ka) and intermediate (Kb) axes. The results suggest that the coalification process and variations in rank within the coal field are due to the combined effects of vertical compression and compaction …

The Creole Area of Louisiana: The southern Louisiana river parishes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans—especially St. John, St. James, Iberville, and Ascension parishes—represent a culturally unique and economically the richest area of the state during the pre-Civil War period (1810–1860). Sociologically, these river parishes represent an area primarily settled by Creole gentlemen-planters. These second-generation Louisianians were the upper echelons of New Orleans society and maintained a very cosmopolitan lifestyle. More often than not, the young gentlemen were educated and traveled abroad. This cosmopolitan lifestyle was reflected in the grand homes they built. Being Creole-settled, this area's cultural and architectural …
