Denitrifying bioreactors (DNBRs) are a sustainable and cost-effective practice commonly used at the edge of fields to reduce nitrate from agricultural runoff. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) is a crucial variable that affects nitrate removal rate (NRR, g N m−3 d−1), nitrate removal efficiency (NRE, %), and nitrate concentration reduction per length (Nrd, mg N L−1 m−1). In this study, two nonlinear models, the developed Michaelis-Menten (MM) model and the Mitscherlich (MT) model, were developed to characterize the relationship between nitrate removal indices (NRR, NRE, and Nrd) and HRT. This study first utilizes nonlinear models to quantitatively understand the relationship …

A universal paradigm describing patterns of speciation across the tree of life has been debated for decades. In marine organisms, inferring patterns of speciation using contemporary and historical patterns of biogeography is challenging due to the deficiency of species-level phylogenies and information on species' distributions, as well as conflicting relationships between species' dispersal, range size and co-occurrence. Most research on global patterns of marine fish speciation and biogeography has focused on coral reef or pelagic species. Carangoidei is an ecologically important clade of marine fishes that use coral reef and pelagic environments. We used sequence capture of 1314 ultraconserved elements …

In a previous paper, methods that have been used to quantify grease mechanical degradation were compared, finding that crossover stress is a practical method for estimating the cone penetration value of a grease using a small sample. This paper covers techniques that have not generally been applied to modeling grease degradation and indicates their usefulness in characterizing the state of a grease. Three methods are examined, each using a different flow profile: rotation, oscillation, and normal force/extension. It is found that crossover stress is likely still the best choice for estimating cone penetration, and a fast, practical method is introduced …

A Descriptive Study Of Louisiana 4-H 8th Through 12th Graders' Perceptions Of Career And College Readiness, Carrie M. Lane
LSU Master's Theses
As youth leave primary education and enter college or a career path, preparing those youth to ensure success has fallen, in large part, upon formal and non-formal youth educators. Encouraging students to apply and complete college has been a focus of education professionals for many years. Historically, gauging college and career readiness (CCR), academic institutions have relied on academic performance in areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics (Mattern, et. al, 2014). The use of academic focused measures instead of student-based evaluation had its drawbacks. While core education is important, measuring soft skills needed for the workforce and college environment …

Understanding And Modeling Drivers’ En-Route Diversion Behavior During Congestion, Mohammad Shapouri
Understanding And Modeling Drivers’ En-Route Diversion Behavior During Congestion, Mohammad Shapouri
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the field of transportation, traffic assignment models primarily have been used to forecast driver route preferences, translating their choices into traffic flow patterns across networks. These models are grounded in distinct behavioral theories and strive to explain how drivers navigate routes based on network features and personal tendencies. Using an aggregation approach, conventional traffic assignment models distribute demand among paths, considering utility and attractiveness. Despite their prevalent use in transportation planning and operations, the fundamental behavioral assumptions of these models have rarely been thoroughly explored. This gap is further compounded by their limited consideration of real-time adjustments and choices …

Μconadapter: Reinforcement Learning-Based Fast Concurrency Adaptation For Microservices In Cloud, Jianshu Liu, Shungeng Zhang, Qingyang Wang
Faculty Publications
Modern web-facing applications such as e-commerce comprise tens or hundreds of distributed and loosely coupled microservices that promise to facilitate high scalability. While hardware resource scaling approaches [28] have been proposed to address response time fluctuations in critical microservices, little attention has been given to the scaling of soft resources (e.g., threads or database connections), which control hardware resource concurrency. This paper demonstrates that optimal soft resource allocation for critical microservices significantly impacts overall system performance, particularly response time. This suggests the need for fast and intelligent runtime reallocation of soft resources as part of microservices scaling management. We introduce …
Multichannel Low-Cost Sensor For Iaq Monitoring: Implementation And Guidelines, Isaac Ntiamoah
Multichannel Low-Cost Sensor For Iaq Monitoring: Implementation And Guidelines, Isaac Ntiamoah
LSU Master's Theses
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is adversely affected by both indoor and outdoor environments, and rental homes occupied by low-income families suffer the most. Poor indoor air can be detrimental to the health of occupants, especially for susceptible populations like those with respiratory diseases such as asthma. Although IAQ monitoring is necessary, it is a challenging, costly, and time-intensive task. Moreover, the protocol for assessing IAQ in residential settings varies, and additional research is needed to establish a standard operating procedure that incorporates new monitoring technologies, such as low-cost air sensors. However, there is a dearth of comprehensive, evidence-based protocols for …

Machine Learning-Based Tool To Predict The Retroreflectivity Of Pavement Markings Throughout The U.S., Ipshit I. Idris
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Retroreflectivity plays a crucial role in pavement markings as it enhances nighttime visibility for drivers. Yet, due to budget constraints, many U.S state agencies rarely monitor retroreflectivity of their markings, and instead, restripe markings based on visual inspection or fixed schedule. Addressing this, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) introduced a new final rule, effective September 6, 2022, that established a new minimum standard for pavement marking retroreflectivity. This rule requires state agencies to implement a method within four years for maintaining pavement marking retroreflectivity at or above minimum levels. The ultimate objective of this study was to assist state agencies comply …

The Effects Of Disruption Type, Trip Purpose, Gender, And Age On Driver Diversion Willingness In The United States Of America, James D. Fuller
LSU Master's Theses
When drivers encounter traffic congestion, one of the most common ways to avoid excessive delays is to divert to an alternate route. Despite the commonplace nature of such routing decisions, relatively little is known about the specific influencers, motivators, and preferences that affect diversion choices under disrupted conditions. Understanding these driver motivations is important for improving the ability of transportation authorities to plan, design, operate, and maintain transportation networks. The research described in this thesis utilizes a driver survey to investigate the situational factors and personal characteristics that may play a significant role in determining a decision to divert or …

In the P. aeruginosa genome, gene PA0962 codes for a probable DNA-binding protein from starved cells (Pa Dps). Pa Dps is assembled from 12 monomers, each consisting of a four-helix bundle fold typical of Dps proteins. A subunit dimer of Pa Dps harbors two ferroxidase centers. Assembly of a dodecameric structure of Pa Dps is favored by the presence of divalent metal ions and at pH 6.0 in the absence or presence of divalent cations. Pa Dps is unable to form the large DNA-protein complexes typical of many Dps proteins. Instead, Pa Dps acts on plasmid DNA to form relaxed …
Structural Health Monitoring And Repair Of Welded Thermoplastic Composite Joints Using Embedded Multifunctional Films, Wencai Li
