Squared Law Algorithms: Theory And Applications., Poornachandra Bellamkonda Rao Jan 1993

Squared Law Algorithms: Theory And Applications., Poornachandra Bellamkonda Rao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation focuses on a new approach for a hardware implementation of the cyclic convolution operation. The cyclic convolution operation is the core of several functions used in applications related to digital signal processing and error control. Since the operation is multiplication intensive and the cost of a multiplication operation is very high, most of the present research effort attempts to reduce the number of multiplications. Our approach, however, aims at obtaining an efficient implementation by relying on the properties of the special case of multiplication, namely, the squaring operation. Due to the properties exhibited by the squaring operation the …

Characterization Of Physiological Responses Of Suspension Cells From Alligator Weed (Alternanthera Philoxeroides (Mart.); Griseb) To An Abrupt Increase In Salinity., Gloria Balagtas-Burow Jan 1993

Characterization Of Physiological Responses Of Suspension Cells From Alligator Weed (Alternanthera Philoxeroides (Mart.); Griseb) To An Abrupt Increase In Salinity., Gloria Balagtas-Burow

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dark-grown suspension cells of alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb) were established in Murashige and Skoog medium and used to characterize several cellular responses to an abrupt increase in salinity (0 to 200 mol m$\sp{-3}$ NaCl). The fresh weight and cell density of salt-treated cells of alligator weed more than doubled by 7 d. Cell viability declined to 77% by 1 d, but recovered to 86% by 7 d after salt treatment. These responses indicate that alligator weed cells survived and adapted to an abrupt increase in salinity. Osmotic potential ($\psi\sb\pi$) of salt-treated cells declined to the $\psi\sb\pi$ of the …

Mathematics And Gender: A General History Of Recent Research And Common Perceptions., Mary E. Reeves Jan 1993

Mathematics And Gender: A General History Of Recent Research And Common Perceptions., Mary E. Reeves

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the last two decades a tremendous volume of research data has been collected about differences between female and male students in mathematics. But although the amount of data collected has been large, there have been few conscious attempts to understand this data in social, economic, technological, and political terms. This history of academic research on gender differences connects the explosion of academic interest in the 1970s and 1980s with the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and the sense of technological crisis that pervades mathematics education and popular consciousness. The emergence of "Women's Lib" and interest in gender equity in …

Analytical Model Of The Progression Of Cracking In Fiber-Reinforced Composites., Jane L. D Runkle Jan 1993

Analytical Model Of The Progression Of Cracking In Fiber-Reinforced Composites., Jane L. D Runkle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two analytical shear lag models have been developed for the progressive damage and final failure of epoxy matrix, fiber-reinforced composites under biaxial loading. The first is a three layer model for laminates of the type ($\pm\theta$,90n) s under general biaxial loading. It gives matrix cracking predictions for the central 90$\sp\circ$ ply group. The second model is a five-layer model for laminates of the type (90n/0m/90p) s under biaxial loading, but it does not include in-plane shear. The five-layer model predicts matrix cracking in all ply groups. The amount of damage in terms of modulus decrease and number of matrix cracks …

We report a study of electron proton collisions at very low Q2, corresponding to virtual photoproduction at centre of mass energies in the range 100-295 GeV. The distribution in transverse energy of the observed hadrons is much harder than can be explained by soft processes. Some of the events show back-to-back two-jet production at the rate and with the characteristics expected from hard two-body scattering. A subset of the two-jet events have energy in the electron direction consistent with that expected from the photon remnant in resolved photon processes. © 1992.

Boardinghouses, Parties And The Creation Of A Political Society: Washington City, 1800-1830, Cynthia Diane Earman Nov 1992

Boardinghouses, Parties And The Creation Of A Political Society: Washington City, 1800-1830, Cynthia Diane Earman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Washington's elite society was a political society where members of Congress, the president, members of his cabinet, Supreme Court justices, and members of the diplomatic corps met with members of the press, and other visitors to the capital, and long term residents came together to form a unique society. This study evolved from the premise that James Sterling Young's view of Washington City was flawed. Three questions guided this project: How did Washington change over time?; Why were specific boardinghouses chosen?; and What role did elite wives play in the Washington community? Washington's elite community was by definition a political …

Multiplication, Division, And Shift Instructions In Parallel Random Access Machines, Jerry L. Trahan, Michael C. Loui, Vijaya Ramachandran Jun 1992

Multiplication, Division, And Shift Instructions In Parallel Random Access Machines, Jerry L. Trahan, Michael C. Loui, Vijaya Ramachandran

Faculty Publications

We prove that polynomial time on a parallel random access machine (PRAM) with unit-cost multiplication and division or on a PRAM with unit-cost shifts is equivalent to polynomial space on a Turing machine (PSPACE). This extends the result that polynomial time on a basic PRAM is equivalent to PSPACE to hold when the PRAM is allowed multiplication or division or unrestricted shifts. It also extends to the PRAM the results that polynomial time on a random access machine (RAM) with multiplication is equivalent to PSPACE and that polynomial time on a RAM with shifts (that is, a vector machine) is …

An Investigation Into Developing An Approach For Incorporating Scheduling Criteria In Generative Process Planning, Nilay Guha May 1992

An Investigation Into Developing An Approach For Incorporating Scheduling Criteria In Generative Process Planning, Nilay Guha

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Process planning and scheduling have conflicting objectives. Since in most cases process planning and scheduling are performed separately, many problems arise within the manufacturing system. Integrating the problem domains of process planning and scheduling leads to a more efficient production control system. This research concerns itself with the lack of consideration of scheduling criteria during process planning. In this research an existing generative CAPP (Computer Aided Process Planning) system is studied in detail. A functional analysis of the CAPP system is then carried out using the IDEF0 modeling methodology. From the functional analysis the functional areas that affect scheduling and …

A Qualitative Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Issues Programming Process Using Focus Group Interviews., Fred Eugene Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Evaluating programs is a necessary and vital function in the management of all organizations. In 1988, the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) began an intensive statewide process entitled "Issues Programming". This is a qualitative evaluation of that process. The study focused on the perceptions of extension agents and community leaders who participated in the process. Four focus group interviews were conducted, two each for agents and leaders. Geographic site selection provided for participant inclusion from all LCES administrative areas. The groups were asked a series of open ended questions designed to draw from them in-depth perceptions about the process in …

The Rhetoric Of Science: A Case Study Of The Cold Fusion Controversy., David Lee Hatfield Jan 1992

The Rhetoric Of Science: A Case Study Of The Cold Fusion Controversy., David Lee Hatfield

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the circumstances surrounding and the rhetoric involved in the cold fusion controversy begun on March 23, 1989, when two University of Utah electrochemists, Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons, announced by press conference the discovery of room-temperature nuclear fusion. The dissertation seeks to determine to what extent a rhetorical analysis of cold fusion discourse may increase understanding of the controversy; the success of Fleischmann and Pons as scientific rhetors; the ways in which scientists' attitudes, values, and assumptions manifest themselves in the discourse; and finally, what may be learned about scientific discourse in general by examining the cold …

Effects Of Temperature On Methane Consumption In A Forest Soil And In Pure Cultures Of The Methanotroph Methylomonas Rubra, G. M. King, A. P.S. Adamsen Jan 1992

Effects Of Temperature On Methane Consumption In A Forest Soil And In Pure Cultures Of The Methanotroph Methylomonas Rubra, G. M. King, A. P.S. Adamsen

Faculty Publications

Methane oxidation in soil cores from a mixed hardwood-coniferous forest varied relatively little as a function of incubation temperatures from -1 to 30°C. The increase in oxidation rate was proportional to T2.4 (in kelvins). This relationship was consistent with limitation of methane transport through a soil gas phase to a subsurface zone of consumption by diffusion. The Q10 for CO2 production, 3.4, was substantially higher than that for methane oxidation, 1.1, and indicated that the response of soil respiration to temperature was limited by enzymatic processes and not diffusion of either organic substrates or molecular oxygen. When grown under conditions …

Fatigue Effects On Manual Lifting Acceleration., Youngjoun Kim Jan 1992

Fatigue Effects On Manual Lifting Acceleration., Youngjoun Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this research was to study the effects of fatigue on lifting acceleration and posture caused by repetitive manual lifting. Electromyogram, oxygen consumption and heart rate were used as indices of a subject's physiological fatigue. Data were collected for a period of two hours of continuous lifting, at a rate of 4 lifts per minute using the free-style posture. A box of fixed dimensions (30cm x 30cm x 20cm) and fixed weight (15.9 Kg) was used as load. It was found that the average load acceleration increased with work duration. Peak acceleration was found to be maximum in …

Phase Equilibria Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Hydrocarbon Mixtures., Hyo-Guk Lee Jan 1992

Phase Equilibria Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Hydrocarbon Mixtures., Hyo-Guk Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The phase equilibria of supercritical carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon mixtures were studied. Correlation techniques for vapor-liquid and solid-fluid equilibria were studied for binary CO$\sb2$ and hydrocarbon mixtures using existing experimental data. Experimental investigation and correlation of the experimental data were carried out for solid-liquid equilibria of light and heavy hydrocarbon mixtures, and CO$\sb2,$ light and heavy hydrocarbon mixtures. A new technique of vapor-liquid equilibrium calculation by the activity coefficient method was developed and applied to binary CO$\sb2$ and hydrocarbon mixtures. The extrapolated vapor pressure of CO$\sb2$ was used for calculation of the fugacity of pure hypothetical liquid CO$\sb2$ and for …

Transgenic Rice Plants Containing A Chlorsulfuron Resistance Gene, A Hygromycin Resistance Gene And The Maizeactivator Transposable Element., Zhijian Li Jan 1992

Transgenic Rice Plants Containing A Chlorsulfuron Resistance Gene, A Hygromycin Resistance Gene And The Maizeactivator Transposable Element., Zhijian Li

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A mutant Arabidopsis acetolactate synthase (ALS) gene csr-1-1, conferring chlorsulfuron resistance, was tested in transgenic rice to develop an alternative selectable marker for rice transformation. Up to a 200-fold increase in chlorsulfuron resistance was detected in transgenic rice calli expressing the mutant ALS gene under control of the CaMV 35S promoter. Efficient selection of resistant protoplast colonies was achieved by using 10 to 50 nM of chlorsulfuron after transformation with the 35S/ALS gene. Fertile transgenic rice plants were successfully recovered from 35S/ALS-containing transformants. These results demonstrated that the 35S/ALS gene could be used as a selectable marker gene in rice …

Politics, The Nationality Problem, And The Habsburg Army, 1848-1914. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lohr Eugene Miller Jr Jan 1992

Politics, The Nationality Problem, And The Habsburg Army, 1848-1914. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lohr Eugene Miller Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The army of the Habsburg Monarchy was the central institution of the Habsburg state, and it embodied the ideal of non-national, dynastic rule. The army leadership was aware of the dangers of nationalism, but in the period between the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the revolutions of 1848, no attempt was made to overcome the danger of national disaffection. The revolutions of 1848 caused the army to remove Hungarian and Italian units from their homelands, but, despite the suspicion in which they were held, these troops fought well in the wars of 1859 and 1866. The financial weakness of …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Within the broader issue of teacher education, the focus of this study is on one of the most neglected areas of inquiry in the field of foreign languages, the preservice field experience, and the development of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching. The following questions were specifically addressed: (1) What perspectives of foreign language teaching do student teachers hold upon completion of their program of university courses? (2) Is there an alteration of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during their student teaching semester? (3) What factors appear to influence student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during …

The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan Jan 1992

The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of organoclay adsorption on the leaching performance of solidified organic wastes was researched. Adsorption isotherms were developed for the adsorption of 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB), nitrobenzene (NB), and phenol by five different organoclays. Simulated liquid wastes containing DCB, NB, and phenol were solidified utilizing various combinations of Type I Portland cement and the five organoclays. The ratio of cement/clay utilized in each solidification matrix varied from 3/2 to 13/2. Linear and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models were utilized to predict the leaching performance of samples cured for 7, 28, and 90 days. The ratio of the actual leachate concentrations compared to …

Nonlinear Inelastic Finite Element Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Structures With Emphasis On Shear And Torsion. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ananth Ramaswamy Jan 1992

Nonlinear Inelastic Finite Element Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Structures With Emphasis On Shear And Torsion. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ananth Ramaswamy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study a post-cracking formulation for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures has been proposed. The secant stiffness formulation considers the following nonlinearities: effects of tension-stiffening in concrete along the reinforcing direction(s), aggregate interlock model with variable shear based on crack confining stresses, and reduction of concrete compressive strength and stiffness after cracking as a function of stresses or strains. The cracking model is capable of simulating the effects of multiple non-orthogonal cracks at a point. This total stiffness formulation treats concrete unloading and reloading along a secant path and is capable of simulating the post-peak strain softening response. …

Failure Predictions In Repairable Multi-Component Systems., Woodrow Thomas Roberts Jr Jan 1992

Failure Predictions In Repairable Multi-Component Systems., Woodrow Thomas Roberts Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The subject of this research is the prediction of failures in repairable multi-component systems from statistical models that utilize the historical failure data for the systems. Failures occurring in repairable systems are examples of a series of discrete events which occur randomly in a continuum. Such stochastic point processes are analyzed using the statistics of event series. The Crow nonhomogenous Poisson process, NHPP, model is recognized by the reliability community as being one of the best models for repairable systems. The objective of this research is to show that the Crow NHPP model, with its overall failure predictions for a …

The Structure Of Cementitious Materials Produced By Alkali Activation Of Calcium Aluminosilicate Glasses., Paul Joseph Schilling Jan 1992

The Structure Of Cementitious Materials Produced By Alkali Activation Of Calcium Aluminosilicate Glasses., Paul Joseph Schilling

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A comprehensive investigation, using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis, x-ray diffraction, and $\sp{29}$Si and $\sp{27}$Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, was conducted on the NaOH-activated blastfurnace slag system. Integration of the results from these techniques accommodated characterization of the unreacted glass, identification of the crystalline hydration products, and presentation of a proposed structure for the C-S-H phase. Crystalline hydration products identified by x-ray diffraction were CSH(I) and (C,M)$\sb4$AH$\sb{\rm x}$, and the proposed structure for the C-S-H phase consists mainly of imperfect layers of tobermorite. The structures of the hydrated phases were found to be closely related …

Development Of Various Quantitative And Analytical Methods For The Analysis Of The Dynamics Of Fish Populations: An Application To The Spotted Seatrout Population In Coastal Louisiana., Thomas Earl Helser Jan 1992

Development Of Various Quantitative And Analytical Methods For The Analysis Of The Dynamics Of Fish Populations: An Application To The Spotted Seatrout Population In Coastal Louisiana., Thomas Earl Helser

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Presented in this dissertation are analytical and quantitative methods developed for an experimental gillnet sampling program for the analysis of the dynamics of fish populations, illustrated here on Louisiana's spotted seatrout population. Chapter 1 presents a new method of estimating gillnet selectivity using a system of simultaneous equations and a non-linear iterative maximum likelihood approach. The model solution is a set of parameter estimates which mathematically describe the response surface of capture probabilities for fish of size-class j in mesh size i. As an extension to the nonlinear maximum likelihood gillnet selectivity model, Chapter 2 presents a second approach using …

Development Of A Technique To Determine The Temperature Dependence Of The Refractive Index Of Carbonaceous Particulates., Barry James Stagg Jan 1992

Development Of A Technique To Determine The Temperature Dependence Of The Refractive Index Of Carbonaceous Particulates., Barry James Stagg

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The complex refractive index of carbonaceous particulates is an important quantity in many areas of combustion research and practical applications. This property characterizes the radiative transport in luminous flames and plays a key role in the interpretation of conventional light scattering measurements. The purpose of the present study is to develop a technique which will allow the experimental determination of the temperature dependence of the refractive indices of carbonaceous materials and provide a predictive model for the variation of the indices. A high temperature ellipsometer system is developed that allows measurements of the intensity of polarized light reflected from the …

The retention and transport behavior of heavy metals in soils is affected by soil chemical heterogeneity. The objectives of this study were to evaluate (i) the effects of heterogeneity on solute transport of heavy metals under steady water flow, (ii) the applicability of single solute and ion exchange isotherms to model Zn and Cd transport in soil columns, (iii) the modelling of the sorption kinetics of Zn under batch and flow conditions, and (iv) the effects of organic matter and iron oxide removal on the kinetics of Zn sorption in soils. A sensitivity analysis showed that site affinity distribution functions …

Extensions Of Tutte's Wheels-And-Whirls Theorem, Collette R. Coullard, James G. Oxley Jan 1992

Extensions Of Tutte's Wheels-And-Whirls Theorem, Collette R. Coullard, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

Tutte's wheels-and-whirls theorem states that if M is a 3-connected matroid and, for every element e, both the deletion and the contraction of e destroy 3-connectivity, then M is a wheel or a whirl. We prove some extensions of this theorem, one of which states that if M is 3-connected and has both a wheel and a whirl minor, then either M has only seven elements or there is some element the deletion or contraction of which maintains 3-connectivity and leaves a matroid with both a wheel and a whirl minor. © 1992.

Internal Labor Markets: Labor Process And Market Power Effects., Rebecca Grace Long Jan 1992

Internal Labor Markets: Labor Process And Market Power Effects., Rebecca Grace Long

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study contends that previous investigations into the nature of internal labor markets have been hampered by their dependence on various macro-level variables (e.g., sectors, industries, strategies) that ignore the often wide variation of employment arrangements within individual firms. It proposes that a better understanding of the employment arrangements associated with individual jobs may be gained by not only examining a job's technological components, but also the relative power of a firm's various coalitions. The data used in the reported study were acquired from the headquarters of the U.S. Bureau of Employment and Training's Occupational Field Analysis Centers in Raleigh, …

Pistols And Politics: Planter And Plain Folk Relations In The Piney Woods South, The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, 1810-1899. (Volumes I And Ii)., Samuel Claiborne Hyde Jr Jan 1992

Pistols And Politics: Planter And Plain Folk Relations In The Piney Woods South, The Florida Parishes Of Louisiana, 1810-1899. (Volumes I And Ii)., Samuel Claiborne Hyde Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Florida parishes of Louisiana experienced a peculiar pattern of development. Following successive periods of English and Spanish domination and an armed insurrection resulting in the shortlived Republic of West Florida, the region stabilized under the control of delta parish planters. A fierce tradition of Jeffersonian republican values encouraged the plain folk to assert themselves politically during the 1830's and 1840's. Yet by employing a series of enemies common to southern whites, and by expanding their control over the means of access to market, the planters stifled the aspirations of the plain folk insuring white unity on the eve of …

Regional Comparative Advantage And Inefficiency In Production: Methodological And Empirical Issues., Barun Kanti Kanjilal Jan 1992

Regional Comparative Advantage And Inefficiency In Production: Methodological And Empirical Issues., Barun Kanti Kanjilal

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The general objective of this study was to provide a methodological framework for evaluating stochastic comparative advantage of a crop in a multi-region multi-crop framework and its link with inefficiency at the firm level. In the first stage, regional comparative advantage, defined in terms of relative profitability, was theoretically analyzed on the basis of a firm's behavior under uncertainty. The empirical application involved derivation of a comparative advantage index for major crops produced in different regions of Louisiana. The results revealed heterogenous survival potential of each crop across regions. Sugarcane was found to have comparative advantage over rice and soybeans …

A Novel Process For The Production Of Clinical Dextran., Doman Kim Jan 1992

A Novel Process For The Production Of Clinical Dextran., Doman Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new process for the production of clinical (or controlled size) dextran was developed. This process is simpler, cheaper and more economical than traditional methods. It involves the use of a mixed culture fermentation with a dextranase producing strain (Lipomyces starkeyi ATCC 74054) and a dextransucrase producing strain (Leuconostoc mesenteroides ATCC 10830). The new process produced 84% (w/w) of theoretical yield clinical dextran with an average polydispersity between 1.2 and 1.5. The mechanism of clinical dextran formation is the competitive production of acceptors from newly formed dextran molecules by dextranase. The acceptors compete for the existing glucosyl portion of sucrose, …
