Feasibility Study On The Reduction Of Hydrostatic Pressure In A Deep-Water Riser Using A Gas-Lift Method., Clovis Antonio Lopes
Feasibility Study On The Reduction Of Hydrostatic Pressure In A Deep-Water Riser Using A Gas-Lift Method., Clovis Antonio Lopes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recent successful exploration efforts in deep waters have heightened interest in developing oil and gas reservoirs on the continental slope. Leases have been obtained in water depths up to 10,000 ft with a requirement that they be drilled within the next decade. Use of current techniques to drill these leases will require extremely large floating drilling units and large diameter marine riser systems. This study presents the results of a feasibility study on the use of an automated gas-lift system for a marine riser that will maintain the hydrostatic pressure in the subsea well-head equal to that of the sea …

Optimization Of Out-Of-Core Computations Using Chain Vectors, M. Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary
Optimization Of Out-Of-Core Computations Using Chain Vectors, M. Kandemir, J. Ramanujam, A. Choudhary
Faculty Publications
Over the last decade, processor speed has become significantly higher than memory and disk speeds. Therefore, exploiting the memory hierarchy has emerged as a key problem in parallel computing. An out-of-core computation is one which operates on disk-resident data. This paper uses the concept of chain vectors for tiling out-of-core codes. The theory of chain vectors is discussed and extended, and their relation to reuse vectors is established. Then, chain vectors are used to optimize the tile size, shape, allocation and scheduling for out-of-core codes.

Mass/Heat Transfer In A Ribbed Blade Coolant Passage With Cylindrical Vortex Generators: The Effect Of Generator-Rib Spacing, Richard G. Hibbs, Sumanta Acharyal, Yi Chen, Dimitris E. Nikitopoulos
Faculty Publications
The effect of vortex-generators on the heat transfer from the internally ribbed passages of a turbine blade coolant channel is studied experimentally using a mass-transfer technique. Cylindrical vortexgenerators placed directly above the ribs have been used in this study. Results are reported on the effect of the spacing between the vortex-generator and the ribs. Detailed distributions of the Sherwood number contours and the centerline Sherwood number distributions are presented. Three generator-ribspacing/ rib-height (s/e) values of 0.55, 1, and 1.5 are considered. It is shown that at small generator-rib spacings (s/e=0.55), the two act as a single element, and lead to …

Metamorphosis Of The Hawaiian Stream Goby Sicyopterus Stimpsoni: A Structural, Functional, And Behavioral Analysis., Heiko Lars Schoenfuss
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The endemic goby Sicyopterus stimpsoni is unique among five species of Hawaiian freshwater fishes because it undergoes rapid metamorphosis of cranial structures during postlarval development. These fishes are amphidromous and return after a prolonged stay in the ocean to streams where they are confined to estuaries until completion of cranial restructuring. Within 48 hours after entering fresh water, head width increases significantly, while total length and head length remains unchanged. Weight decreases by approximately 15% during this period. The upper lip enlarges greatly, and the mouth position shifts from terminal to nearly ventral. Shape analysis of radiographs taken from a …

Development And In Vivo Evaluation Of A Pura Mutant Strain Of The Channel Catfish Pathogen Edwardsiella Ictaluri., Mark Lee Lawrence
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Edwardsiella ictaluri is the causative agent of enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), which is the most serious disease affecting the channel catfish industry. Killed vaccines have been inconsistent in providing protection against ESC, and no live attenuated vaccines have been described. The purpose of this study was to develop a nutritionally attenuated mutant strain of E. ictaluri and evaluate its virulence and vaccine efficacy. An E. ictaluri genomic library was constructed, and a clone containing the purA gene was isolated and sequenced. The E. ictaluri purA gene was found to have several features in common with the E. coli purA …

We report performance measurements of a sub-millimeter resolution CdZnTe strip detector developed as a prototype for astronomical instruments operating with good efficiency in the 30-300 keV photon energy range. The prototype is a 1.4 mm thick, 64 × 64 contact stripe CdZnTe array of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions. Pulse height spectra were recorded in orthogonal-stripe coincidence mode which demonstrate room-temperature energy resolution < 10 keV (FWHM) for 122 keV photons with a peak-to-valley ratio > 5:1. Good response is also demonstrated at higher energies using a coplanar grid readout configuration. Spatial resolution capabilities finer than the stripe pitch are demonstrated. We present the image of a 133Ba source viewed through a …

Pseudospin Transformation Of Physical Operators, A. L. Blokhin, C. Bahri, J. P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
A procedure for applications of the pseudospin transformation within the framework of nuclear oscillator shell model is developed. It is valid for operators expressed in terms of single-particle variables and is based on permutation rules for special rotational invariants. The procedure is applied to a number of physical operators including several rotational scalars, the spin and orbital momenta, and the quadrupole moment. An algorithm for generating an approximation to the pseudospin transformation, which gives a simple and accurate expression for dominant parts of required transforms, is also given. The algebras associated with pseudospin transformations are discussed. © 1996 IOP Publishing …

Jet photoproduction, where the two highest transverse energy (ETjet) jets have ETjet above 6 GeV and a jet-jet invariant mass above 23 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at the HERA ep collider. Resolved and direct photoproduction samples have been separated. The cross section as a function of the angle between the jet-jet axis and the beam direction in the dijet rest frame has been measured for the two samples. The measured angular distributions differ markedly from each other. They agree with the predictions of QCD calculations, where the different angular distributions reflect the different spins of the …

Hydrocarbon Degradation In Louisiana's Salt And Fresh Water Marshes: Inherent Potential, Enhancement, And In-Situ Monitoring Techniques, William A. Jackson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ability to effectively remediate crude oil from marsh systems is important due to the coexistence of the economically important hydrocarbon industry and ecologically and economically valuable marshes. Laboratory and field studies were initiated to examine the intrinsic ability of coastal marshes to biodegrade crude oil, to determine the ability to enhance degradation using nutrient additions, and develop a superior monitoring technique. The alkane and poly aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fractions seem to be independently degraded and these systems appear to have much greater capacity to degrade PAHs than alkanes. Nitrogen was found to be a limiting factor for both alkane …

The production of φ mesons in the reaction e+p → e+φp (φ → K+K-), for 7 < Q2 < 25 GeV2 and for virtual photon-proton centre of mass energies (W) in the range 42-134 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. When compared to lower energy data at similar Q2, the results show that the γp → p0p cross section rises strongly with W. This behaviour is similar to that previously found for the γ*p → p0p cross section. This strong dependence cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. It is, however, consistent with perturbative QCD expectations, where it reflects the rise of the gluon momentum density in the proton at small x. The ratio of σ(φ)/σ(p0), which has previously been determined by ZEUS to be 0.065 ± 0.013 (stat.) in photoproduction at a mean W of 70 GeV, is measured to be 0.18 ± 0.05 (stat.) ± 0.03 (syst.) at a mean Q2 of 12.3 GeV2 and mean W of ≈ 100 GeV and is thus approaching at large Q2 the value of 2/9 predicted from the quark charges of the vector mesons and a flavour independent production mechanism.

Projections of general circulation models suggest that freshwater discharge from the Mississippi River to the coastal ocean will increase 20% if atmospheric CO2 concentration doubles. This result is likely to affect water column stability, surface productivity, and global oxygen cycling in the northern Gulf of Mexico, which is the site of the largest (up to 16,500 km2) and most severe hypoxic zone (liter‒1) in the western Atlantic Ocean. We use a coupled physical-biological two-box model to investigate potential effects of climate change on seasonal oxygen cycling and hypoxia in river-dominated coastal waters. The production of φ mesons in the reaction e+p → e+φp (φ → K+K-) at a median Q2 of 10-4 GeV2 has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The differential φ photoproduction cross section dσ/dt has an exponential shape and has been determined in the kinematic range 0.1 < |t| < 0.5 GeV2 and 60 < W < 80 GeV. An integrated cross section of σγp→φp = 0.96 ± 0.19+0.21-.18 μb has been obtained by extrapolating to t = 0. When compared to lower energy data, the results show a weak energy dependence of both σγp→φp and the slope of the t distribution. The φ decay angular distributions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. From lower energies to HERA energies, the features of φ photoproduction are compatible with those of a soft diffractive process.

The Mississippi River system ranks among the world's top 10 rivers in freshwater and sediment inputs to the coastal ocean. The river contributes 90% of the freshwater loading to the Gulf of Mexico, and terminates amidst one of the United States' most productive fisheries regions and the location of the largest zone of hypoxia, in the western Atlantic Ocean. Significant increases in riverine nutrient concentrations and loadings of nitrate and phosphorus and decreases in silicate have occurred this century, and have accelerated since 1950. Consequently, major alterations have occurred in the probable nutrient limitation and overall stoichiometric nutrient balance in …

Photoproduction events which have two or more jets have been studied in the Wγp range 135 GeV < Wγp < 280 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A class of events is observed with little hadronic activity between the jets. The jets are separated by pseudorapidity intervals (Δη) of up to four units and have transverse energies greater than 6 GeV. A gap is defined as the absence between the jets of particles with transverse energy greater than 300 MeV. The fraction of events containing a gap is measured as a function of Δη. It decreases exponentially as expected for processes in which colour is exchanged between the jets, up to a value of Δη ∼ 3, then reaches a constant value of about 0.1. The excess above the exponential fall-off can be interpreted as evidence for hard diffractive scattering via a strongly interacting colour singlet object.

Hydrologic modification of coastal wetlands is pervasive, continuing and longstanding in the US. Appreciation for the subtleties of the direct and indirect effects of hydrologic changes on emergent vegetation, soils and co-dependent flora and fauna is contributing to restoration efforts. However the results of wetland restoration/rehabilitation are mostly empirical, rather than scientific in understanding. Science is contributing to the management interest by providing documentation of the past and present failures and successes, and, unveiling the fundamental understanding necessary to move from one wetland to another in an informed and adaptable manner. A long-PCR method was developed for the efficient site-specific mutagenesis of herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) DNA fragments with high GC content. In this protocol, a PCR product was partially extended first using a cloned DNA fragment. The final mutagenized fragment was produced after a second extension using another PCR product and final amplification using external primers. The sequential use of two extension reduction increased the predicted frequency of the engineered mutation in the final product to 100%. This method was used to generate a mutated glycoprotein K (gK) gene specified by HSV-1. A recombinant virus that carried the mutated gK …
