Creation Of A Myth By Five Leftist Writers, Thomas Mcgrath Jul 1940

Creation Of A Myth By Five Leftist Writers, Thomas Mcgrath

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This is a study of the symbols in the work of five modem English left-wing writers.

Chapter I shows that the number of recurring images in the work of these authors, points to a submerged myth, or formal system of symbols. This has been partially recognized by a few critics but never fully examined. The symbols themselves, because of their newness and because they stand for values many of which are new to bourgeois thought, have earned for the work of these writers a reputation of being both strange and abstruse. It is suggested that Ignorance of the meanings of …

Development Of Public Assistance In Louisiana., Marianna Evans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to show how a public assistance program has developed to meet the needs of a rapidly urbanizing society, and how, in Louisiana, this program has evolved from an incidental, casual, and uncertain activity of local governing units to an integrated, well-organized governmental function.

Legislative provisions for aid to dependent individuals form the base of the study; statistical information concerning the extent of assistance and explanation of the administrative organization of the various public assistance agencies bring out the sociological implications of a public assistance program.

Bertrandville, the independent Negro village studied in the summer of 1935, is at present a line-village type of settlement located on the western side of Bayou Lafourche, in the seventh ward of the parish …

Although this Institution played an important role in the economic development of Louisiana, relatively little is known about it today. Taking the available records as a source of information, the present study describes and analyzes the organization and the operation of this now type of banking. Particular emphasis is placed upon the fact that the institution was financed through the sale of bonds guaranteed by the State; and for that …
