Sensory Characteristics And Optimization Of A Low-Sodium Salt Formulation And Its Food Application, Armen Khachatryan Jan 2007

Sensory Characteristics And Optimization Of A Low-Sodium Salt Formulation And Its Food Application, Armen Khachatryan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Excessive consumption of sodium is associated with high blood pressure in people. Reduction of sodium intake and replacement of salt with salt substitutes are an essential component of the primary prevention of hypertension. Potassium chloride is the most widely used salt substitute. However, when used in large amounts, it imparts bitterness and metallic aftertaste. Therefore, bitterness masking agents need to be used in salt substitute formulations. L-Arginine has been reported to have bitterness masking properties. No research has yet been conducted to investigate the effects of KCl and L-Arginine on the perception of saltiness and bitterness in the mixture of …

Hope For Today And Tomorrow: Identity Construction Power, And Persistence Of Community College Women Who Are First In Their Families To Attend College, Crystal Deer Lee Jan 2007

Hope For Today And Tomorrow: Identity Construction Power, And Persistence Of Community College Women Who Are First In Their Families To Attend College, Crystal Deer Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation was a case study of four community college women who were first in their families to attend college. Through this study, the “first-generation” construct was analyzed in regard to its uses and limits. The researcher found the label as an identifier becomes problematic through social discourse. These results confirm London’s (1996) finding that students themselves do not necessarily find anything unique about their situations or anything in common with other students simply based on their being the first in their families to attend college. Therefore, the “first-generation” construct may be viewed primarily as a higher education versus an …

Chromosomal Stability And Epigenetic Modifications Of Fibroblast Cells Used For Nuclear Transfer, Angelica Maria Giraldo Gomez Jan 2007

Chromosomal Stability And Epigenetic Modifications Of Fibroblast Cells Used For Nuclear Transfer, Angelica Maria Giraldo Gomez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Investigations into the importance of the nuclear integrity of the donor cell prior to nuclear transfer (NT) are limited. In Experiment 1, the proliferative characteristics, chromosomal stability and level of histone phosphorylation in cell lines established by explants and enzymatic dissociation at different population doublings (PDs) were investigated. The cells divided at a constant rate and cell cycle length increased only at the end of the proliferative stage. The level of aneuploidies was high and remained elevated throughout the study independent of the technique used to establish the primary culture. High levels of multinucleated cells and abnormal spindle configurations were …

Intracellular Lipids In Bos Indicus And Box Taurus Oocytes, Casey Bryant Ballard Jan 2007

Intracellular Lipids In Bos Indicus And Box Taurus Oocytes, Casey Bryant Ballard

LSU Master's Theses

It has been proposed that Bos indicus when compared with Bos taurus embryos are more sensitive to cryopreservation procedures due to higher intracellular lipid content of the embryos. With cyropreservation of Bos indicus embryos increasing for export, it is essential to improve the viability of these cryopreserved embryos. In Experiment I, M-II oocytes from mice, pigs and cows were subjected to two different procedures to evaluate lipid content. The lipid content present in pig oocytes was significantly (P<0.05) higher when compared with mouse and cow oocytes. Pig oocytes had a lower settling point in the sucrose buoyant density gradient and higher Nile Red units, which indicated higher lipids present in the oocytes. In Experiment II, it was determined that M-II oocytes aspirated from superstimulated Brahman donors were significantly higher (P<0.05) in lipid content compared with English breed donors. The lipid content present in Brahman oocytes was higher when compared with English breeds when tested with a sucrose buoyant density gradient and Nile Red staining. In addition, donor females with higher body condition scores were significantly (P<0.05) higher in oocyte lipid content when compared with donor females of lower body condition scores. Furthermore, animal body condition scores, cholesterol and triglyceride levels prior to oocyte aspiration may be indicators of intracellular lipids in the oocytes and embryos. To our knowledge, this is the first report that evaluated intracellular lipid content of M-II oocytes of different beef breed types using a sucrose buoyant density gradient and Nile Red staining.

Visualizing The Menstrual Cycle: Effects Of A Redesigned Cycle Diagram On Community College Biology Students' Learning, Francesca Maria Mellieon-Williams

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This mixed methods, exploratory study investigated the importance of the menstrual cycle diagram for understanding human reproduction. Several theories were used to support this study including Visual Design Theory (Tufte, 1990, 1997, 2001), and Human Constructivist Theory (Mintzes, Wandersee, Novak 1998). The two sexuality education programs used by society, abstinence-only programs and comprehensive sex education programs were compared to illustrate how this study applies to the current state of sexuality education in the United States. Community college students from two institutions in the southern region of the United States, registered in five introductory biological science courses, participated in a unit …

Synthesis And Properties Of Isoporphyrins And Related Derivatives For Application In Photodynamic Therapy, Sandra Celinah Mwakwari Jan 2007

Synthesis And Properties Of Isoporphyrins And Related Derivatives For Application In Photodynamic Therapy, Sandra Celinah Mwakwari

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Isoporphyrins are tautomers of porphyrins with an interrupted macrocyclic conjugation owing to the presence of a sp3 hybridized meso-carbon. Due to their absorption at long wavelengths (~800nm), isoporphyrins are potential candidates as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy (PDT), a ternary modality of cancer treatment. They are also of biological interest due to their unique redox properties among porphyrin derivatives and could be a new class of near-IR dyes. Isoporphyrins are known to be unstable with respect to transformation back to the fully conjugated porphyrin chromophore except when the meso-carbon is geminally substituted and for this reason a detailed study of this …

Design, Synthesis, And Conformational Studies Of Peptides Containing α,α-Disubstituted Amino Acids, Jia Wang Jan 2007

Design, Synthesis, And Conformational Studies Of Peptides Containing α,α-Disubstituted Amino Acids, Jia Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cα,α-disubstituted amino acids (ααAAs) are widely utilized to conformationally constrain peptides. Several pentapeptides containing dipropylglycine (Dpg) at alternating positions and their α-amino acid counterpart L-norvaline (Nva) analogues were synthesized to fully investigate the impact of Dpg on peptide backbone structure in aqueous solution. CD, VCD and NMR spectral analysis suggest that Dpg containing peptides adopt more ordered structures relative to their Nva containing analogues. The central residues (Ala, Thr, Tyr, Val) and the charged side-chains of Glu and Lys play important roles in the degree of peptide folding. Hydrophobic and branched residues (Val, Tyr) at the …

Copper(Ii) Oxide Mediated Formation And Stabilization Of Combustion Generated Persistent Free Radicals, Hieu Truong Jan 2007

Copper(Ii) Oxide Mediated Formation And Stabilization Of Combustion Generated Persistent Free Radicals, Hieu Truong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Biologically damaging semiquinone-type radicals have been reported in cigarette smoke, their likely origin being hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CT) molecular precursors contained by the tobacco. Since other biomass contains HQ and CT-type species, it is likely that combustion of other biomass will also form semiquinone-type radicals. All hydrocarbon fuels will form phenol and substituted phenol that can form substituted phenoxyl radicals. Because each of these radicals has the potential to be environmentally persistent and biologically active, their formation and stabilization from various molecular precursors was studied with the focus on surface-bound radicals formed in association with combustion-generated fly-ash particles. Comprehensive …

Floral Traits, Pollinator Behavior, And Plant Reproduction: Tests Of Natural And Sexual Selection In The Hummingbird-Pollinated Herb Chrysothemis Friedrichsthaliana, Jane Elizabeth Carlson Jan 2007

Floral Traits, Pollinator Behavior, And Plant Reproduction: Tests Of Natural And Sexual Selection In The Hummingbird-Pollinated Herb Chrysothemis Friedrichsthaliana, Jane Elizabeth Carlson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Pollinators may promote floral evolution by selectively visiting preferred floral phenotypes. Herbivores may also influence the evolution of floral traits, by reducing the fitness of poorly-defended plants, such as those without protective sepals. In this dissertation, I investigate the reproductive and evolutionary consequences of floral visitors for two floral traits of the Neotropical herb Chrysothemis friedrichsthaliana (Gesneriaceae). I focus on the trait male-biased nectar production, which results from coincident temporal shifts in nectar production rates and sexual function within flowers. First, I review theory relevant to male- and female-biased nectar production, and I generate hypotheses to explain its evolution in …

The Effects Of Trawling And Habitat Use On Red Snapper And The Associated Community, Robert Joseph David Wells Jan 2007

The Effects Of Trawling And Habitat Use On Red Snapper And The Associated Community, Robert Joseph David Wells

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary impediment to the recovery of Gulf of Mexico (GOM) red snapper is believed to be high levels of bycatch of age 0 and age 1 individuals in shrimp trawls. Thus, conservation of GOM red snapper involves evaluating both habitat-specific function and effects of shrimp trawls on red snapper and the associated benthic ecosystem. The two goals of this study were to evaluate the effects commercial shrimp trawls have on juvenile red snapper life history parameters, on associated fish and invertebrate communities and their habitat, and to identify essential fish habitat (EFH) for red snapper by applying all four …

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Solar Radiation In Louisiana, Michael Ulric Kemp Jan 2007

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Solar Radiation In Louisiana, Michael Ulric Kemp

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine temporal and spatial trends in surface global horizontal solar radiation in Louisiana using a 30-year dataset (1961-1990) of the four stations in Louisiana from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRD) and a 6-year dataset (2001-2006) of the 25 stations in the Louisiana Agriclimatic Information System (LAIS). Three of the four NSRD stations exhibit a downward linear trend in surface solar radiation over the 30-year period of record, similar to the global trends uncovered in previous studies. Only one station exhibits a slightly upward trend. Surface solar radiation exhibits a positive correlation with …

Particle And Dredge-Scale Kinetic Studies Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemical Desorption From Sediment, Justin Edward Birdwell Jan 2007

Particle And Dredge-Scale Kinetic Studies Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemical Desorption From Sediment, Justin Edward Birdwell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The discharge of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) and other hazardous substances from anthropogenic sources to surface waters and the atmosphere has led to the widespread contamination of bottom sediments throughout the world. HOCs collect in sediments due to their affinity for organic matter and other sorbents present on and within their solid matrices. There is interest in the movement of HOCs from historically contaminated, resuspended sediments to surface waters due to the connection between chemical desorption and bioavailability. Quantitatively accurate predictions of contaminant concentrations in environmental media are needed for reliable risk assessment and to develop strategies for protection of …

Interactions Of The Triaquatricarbonylrhenium(I) Cation With Nucleotides And Other N-Donor Ligands, Kristie Marie Adams Jan 2007

Interactions Of The Triaquatricarbonylrhenium(I) Cation With Nucleotides And Other N-Donor Ligands, Kristie Marie Adams

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Transition metal centers possessing an octahedral geometry are useful for understanding the natural role of metal ions in biology. Complexes based on such metals might improve upon the widely used square planar Pt(II) anticancer drug cisplatin, cis-[Pt(NH3)2Cl2]. The octahedral triaquatricarbonylrhenium(I) cation, fac-[Re(CO)3(H2O)3]+, has been shown to possess anticancer activity. Furthermore, Re(I) complexes containing unstable rhenium isotopes have found utility as radiodiagnostic and radiotherapeutic agents. Thus, this work focuses on elucidating the fundamental coordination chemistry of fac-[Re(CO)3(H2O)3]+ …

School Readiness And Preschoolers' Attachment Representations: Possible Connections, Katherine A. Darbonne Jan 2007

School Readiness And Preschoolers' Attachment Representations: Possible Connections, Katherine A. Darbonne

LSU Master's Theses

The current study examined the possible relationship between preschooler's school readiness and their attachment representations. More specifically, the study examined preschooler's performances on standardized tests and their perceptions of close relationships. The possible connection between school readiness and attachment representations was through children's experiences of stress during standardized testing situations (Fleege, Charlesworth, Burts, & Hart, 1992) and children's stress invoking the use of their internal working models (Bowlby, 1969/1982). The children were administered the Brigance CIBS-R (Glascoe, 1999), a standardized test that was most often used in the local schools to assess school readiness. The children were also videotaped while …

Synthesis Of Quaternary Dendronized Cellulose Derivatives And Their Potential Biological Applications, Changde Zhang Jan 2007

Synthesis Of Quaternary Dendronized Cellulose Derivatives And Their Potential Biological Applications, Changde Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, novel dendronized cellulose derivatives with biodegradable backbones were created by using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the starting material. CMC was first transformed into its corresponding tetrabutyl ammonium salt, which reacted with 2-chloro-N-methylpyridinium iodide (CMPI) to produce an activated ester of [2-(N-methyl pyridium) carboxymethyl cellulose] iodide (MPCMCI). The reaction of MPCMCPI and di-tert-butyl 4-[2-(ter-butoxycarbonyl)ethyl]-4-aminoheptanedicarboxylate (BA) produced a new derivative with BA dendron elaborated on cellulose backbone (CMCBA). The degree of substitution (DS) of CMCBA was adjusted by controlling the relative concentration of CMPI and by choosing CMC with different DS or different molecular weights. Thermogrametric analysis (TGA) …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Derivatives And Analogs Of Xanthene Dyes, Xiangyang Xu Jan 2007

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Derivatives And Analogs Of Xanthene Dyes, Xiangyang Xu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Xanthene dyes are one of the oldest synthetic dyes. Fluorescein was first synthesized by von Baeyer in 1871. Since its discovery, it has been extensively studied. Fluorescein can exist as four different ionic forms (cationic form, neutral form, monoanionic form and dianionic form). Under physiological conditions (pH 7.4), fluorescein mainly exists as the dianionic form which grants it large quantum yield and excellent solubility in water. This renders fluorescein and its derivatives useful for studies in biological media. Cysteine (Cys) and homocysteine (Hcy) are of the few amino acids which contain sulfur and both of them are believed to be …

Toward A New Understanding Of Wisdom: The Role Of Communication On Perceptions Of Wisdom, Jon M. Croghan Jan 2007

Toward A New Understanding Of Wisdom: The Role Of Communication On Perceptions Of Wisdom, Jon M. Croghan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Wisdom is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, multidisciplinary construct which has been discussed and examined since the beginning of recorded history. Many classical and contemporary scholars have sought to define wisdom, but a precise definition has proven elusive. Since wisdom often defies easy categorization, this dissertation examines wisdom using a multi-methodological perspective. Four chapters of this dissertation discuss the historiography of various societal attributions of wisdom using performance studies techniques. Three chapters examine wisdom and the instruments constructed to measure the construct from a social scientific approach. This study seeks to clarify, while simultaneously deconstructing, the definition of wisdom. The four performative …

Assessing The Influence Of Religion On Health Behavior, David B. Creel Jan 2007

Assessing The Influence Of Religion On Health Behavior, David B. Creel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A primary aim of this study was to confirm the factor structure of the Health and Religious Congruency Scale (HARCS), a measure previously developed by the same research team. The HARCS questions directly link religious beliefs/activities to health behaviors. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that the current data fit poorly to the factor structure found in the pilot study. Because the current sample was more religiously diverse than the pilot study sample, and could potentially provide a factor structure that better reflects the views of individuals from different religious affiliations, a principal components analysis was conducted on the current data. …

Optimum Energy Allocation For Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Krishna Kishore Gunturu Jan 2007

Optimum Energy Allocation For Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Krishna Kishore Gunturu

LSU Master's Theses

The problem of binary hypothesis testing in a wireless sensor network is studied in the presence of noisy channels and for non-identical sensors. We have designed a mathematically tractable fusion rule for which optimal energy allocation for individual sensors can be achieved. In this thesis we considered two methods for transmitting the sensor observations; binary modulation and M-ary modulation. In binary modulation we are able to allocate the energy among the sensors and protect the individual quantized bits where as the M-ary modulation provides optimum energy allocation only among the sensors. The goal is to design a fusion rule and …

Ecological Factors Affecting The Diversity Of Tropical Tree Seedlings, C. E. Timothy Paine Jan 2007

Ecological Factors Affecting The Diversity Of Tropical Tree Seedlings, C. E. Timothy Paine

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Seed dispersal and seedling establishment – the two stages in seedling recruitment – set the spatiotemporal distribution of new individuals in plant communities. Diversity often increases at the seed to seedling transition, making it critical for species coexistence. Debate continues regarding the effects of each stage on the community structure of diverse forests. Neutral theories postulate a strong role of dispersal, whereas niche-differentiation theories suggest that environmental conditions may be more important. This dissertation tested the effects of dispersal, competition and predation on the structure of the seedling layer in a pristine Amazonian rainforest. Seed-addition experiments broadly tested the relative …

Influence Of Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha And Minocycline On Microglia And Macrophage Activation During Polytropic Retrovirus Infection, Meryll E. Corbin Jan 2007

Influence Of Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha And Minocycline On Microglia And Macrophage Activation During Polytropic Retrovirus Infection, Meryll E. Corbin

LSU Master's Theses

Microglia/macrophage activation has been associated with the pathogenesis of various neurological diseases including human immunodeficiency virus encephalitis, transmissible spongiform encephalitis, and Alzheimer's disease (AD). In vitro studies have indicated a role for TNFα in activating these cells which leads to their migration, proliferation, and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines that may potentially damage brain tissue. In the current study, we analyzed the phenotype of microglia and macrophages enriched from wild type and TNFα deficient mice infected with a neurovirulent murine retrovirus. Although TNF receptors CD120a and CD120b were expressed on both microglia and macrophage population, unaltered by either retrovirus …

A Comparison Of Channel Morphology, Marsh Elevation, And Biological Processes In Natural And Dredged Tidal Salt Marshes In Louisiana, Jennifer S. Spicer Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Channel Morphology, Marsh Elevation, And Biological Processes In Natural And Dredged Tidal Salt Marshes In Louisiana, Jennifer S. Spicer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Channel networks in tidal marshes serve as conduits for the exchange of water between the estuary and the marsh surface and form the spatial structure that regulates the flow of organisms, materials, and energy throughout the marsh system. Canal dredging creates channels with distinct linear shapes, and the artificial levee created from the dredged material creates ‘spoil banks’ along either side of the channel edge. Differences in morphology and adjacent marsh surface elevation between natural and dredged channel systems have not been well quantified, but may have important implications for the functioning of tidal channels as habitat for marsh-dependent species. …

Student Social Workers' Attitudes About Domestic Violence And Implications For Social Work Education, Vonnie L. Hawkins

LSU Master's Theses

This descriptive, correlational and exploratory study used the Domestic Violence Blame Scale and Domestic Violence Myth Acceptance Scale, with questions suggested by the literature, to examine attitudes about domestic violence, knowledge and self-reported preparedness of a purposive sample of student social workers (N=236) in a southern state. An anonymous online web-based survey was used for data collection, and universities distributed the survey hyperlink directly to their students. Response rate was approximately 22% out of an estimated 1060 students who were reported to have received the hyperlink by their universities. Lower victim blame and myth acceptance scores were observed in students …

An Evaluation Of An Inshore Aquaculture Park For Sustainable Coastal Community Development, Vanesssa Maxwell Jan 2007

An Evaluation Of An Inshore Aquaculture Park For Sustainable Coastal Community Development, Vanesssa Maxwell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation addresses applying industrial park concepts to the development of aquaculture parks in public waters specifically for off-bottom triploid Easter oyster, Crassostrea virginica, culture. The objectives are to identify the permitting process, relevant agencies, and legislation needed to facilitate development of aquaculture parks in the Gulf of Mexico states, and test and analyze off-bottom oyster culture for commercial production of triploid oysters. Off-bottom culture can increase oyster production, but fouling organisms can reduce growth and survival rates. The Adjustable Longline System (ALS), commercially used in Australia, allows oyster bags to be suspended in the water column and positioned for …

Evaluation Of Selected Immune Response To Haemonchus Contortus In Gulf Coast Native Compared To Suffolk Lambs, Krishna P. Shakya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Haemonchus contortus is one of the major nematode parasites causing substantial economic losses in small ruminant farming worldwide. Recently, effect of anthelmintic treatment has decreased due to an increasing problem of nematode populations that have developed resistance to anthelmintics. There are certain breeds of sheep that are identified as being relatively resistant to the parasite including Gulf Coast Native (Native) sheep. Understanding the mode of immune response that helps these breeds of sheep control infection could help design vaccines and enhance control programs. This experiment was designed to evaluate the immunological responses of Native, compared with susceptible Suffolk sheep that …

The experiment was conducted on agronomic and reproductive traits of sugarcane at the Sugar Research Station, St. Gabriel, LA, on sugarcane genotypes subjected to artificial photoperiod regimes. The potting media consisted of equal parts of washed sand, Canadian peat moss, and a Commerce silt loam soil (fine-silty, mixed, nonacid, thermic aeric Fluvaquents). Early nitrogen (22.4-22.4-22.4 kg ha-1) …

Evaluation Of Anuran Richness In Restored Wetlands Of Central Louisiana, Sarah Jane Barlow Jan 2007

Evaluation Of Anuran Richness In Restored Wetlands Of Central Louisiana, Sarah Jane Barlow

LSU Master's Theses

Bottomland hardwood forests and associated fauna, including frogs, are disappearing. The 1990 Farm Bill created a wetland restoration program on private lands called the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) that has the potential to reverse the declines in species associated with bottomland hardwood forests. As of September 2005, nearly 85,000 ha had been enrolled in Louisiana, but the structure and value of these wetlands to frogs is not known. I evaluated 22 restored and 8 reference wetlands from January through May in 2004 and 2005 to determine the effects of local and landscape scale habitat characteristics on frog species richness and …

Development Of A Biomass Transducer For Automated Microalgal Bioreactors, Amar Shivaram Hegde Jan 2007

Development Of A Biomass Transducer For Automated Microalgal Bioreactors, Amar Shivaram Hegde

LSU Master's Theses

A highly sensitive miniaturized biomass transducer is necessary for continuous and reliable monitoring of the microalgal biomass in a computer controlled, automated microalgal bioreactor. Previous known methods to determine microalgal biomass applicable in these bioreactors are based on single wavelength turbidimetric or fluorescence. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine the light absorption characteristics of some commercially applicable microalgae in the electromagnetic wavelength range of 200-800 nm (2) design and construct a new miniaturized biomass transducer (3) process the transducer output to correlate with the biomass. Wavelength sensitivity analysis was conducted on the commercially important microalgal species - …

Predicting Progeny Performance And Genome Analysis In Sugarcane (Saccharum Spp), Sreedhar Alwala Jan 2007

Predicting Progeny Performance And Genome Analysis In Sugarcane (Saccharum Spp), Sreedhar Alwala

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Genetic diversity/similarity (GS) was estimated among nine sugarcane parental genotypes using target region amplification polymorphism (TRAP), amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers and coefficient of parentage (f). Its relationship to progeny performance was assessed among five bi-parental crosses involving the nine parents. Phenotypic data for stalk-height, -count, -diameter, cane yield and theoretical recoverable sugars (TRS) were collected from which genetic parameters (family means, genetic variances, average mid parental heterosis, percent heterotic clones and mid parental values) were calculated. For TRS, families with higher means and variances had a greater proportion of heterotic clones. AFLP-GS was found to be a good …

A Study Of Auxiliary Be In African American English: A Comparison Of Children With And Without Specific Language Impairment, April W. Garrity Jan 2007

A Study Of Auxiliary Be In African American English: A Comparison Of Children With And Without Specific Language Impairment, April W. Garrity

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study’s purpose was to examine the use of auxiliary BE forms in African American English (AAE)-speaking children with and without language impairment. The impetus for this work was a lack of information in the literature about BE use in AAE as a function of form, language status, and tasks, and the relevance of this type of data for testing one theoretical model of childhood language impairment, the Extended Optional Infinitive account (EOI; Rice, Wexler, & Cleave, 1995). Thirty African Americans participated: 10 six-year-olds with specific language impairment (SLI); 10 age controls (AM); and, 10 language controls (LM). All of …
