Habitat Use, Movements, And Ecology Of Female Mottled Ducks On The Gulf Coast Of Louisiana And Texas, Bruce Edward Davis Jan 2012

Habitat Use, Movements, And Ecology Of Female Mottled Ducks On The Gulf Coast Of Louisiana And Texas, Bruce Edward Davis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mottled ducks (Anas fulvigula) are the most abundant breeding waterfowl in the coastal marshes of Louisiana and Texas. Mottled ducks are non-migratory and heavily dependent on coastal marsh habitats; they must satisfy all of their annual resource needs from within the Gulf Coast region. Coastal marsh habitats are being rapidly lost or degraded in Louisiana and Texas. The hydrology of many coastal marsh habitats has been altered by anthropogenic activity and natural factors. Parameters related to Mottled Duck habitat use and movements in this altered environment are poorly understood, and managers need information on vital rates of Mottled Ducks in …

What Does The ¹⁴C Method For Estimating Photosynthetic Rates In The Ocean Really Measure?, Shaofeng Pei Jan 2012

What Does The ¹⁴C Method For Estimating Photosynthetic Rates In The Ocean Really Measure?, Shaofeng Pei

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The 14C method has been used extensively by both limnologists and oceanographers to measure photosynthetic rates in aquatic systems, and the large database of 14C measurements that now exists is the ground truth with which satellite algorithms for estimating marine photosynthetic rates on a basin and global scale have been calibrated. However, disconcerting uncertainties still remain with respect to whether and under what circumstances the 14C method provides an estimate of net or gross photosynthesis, or something in between. My study combined batch and continuous culture studies to clarify this ambiguous issue. The batch culture work with …

Communicating While Stimulated: The Effects Of Sensory-Processing Sensitivity On Behavior And Relationships, Christopher Charles Gearhart Jan 2012

Communicating While Stimulated: The Effects Of Sensory-Processing Sensitivity On Behavior And Relationships, Christopher Charles Gearhart

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In light of claims made by Aron (1996, 2000; Aron & Aron, 1997), this dissertation tested the influence of sensory-processing sensitivity on communication via two sets of research questions. First, are highly sensitive persons more easily aroused by stimulation, and if so does this necessarily cause a decrease in affect recognition? Results of an experimental study (N = 342) indicate that highly sensitive persons (HSPs) were more distracted by audio stimulation, causing more errors in accuracy judgments on non-verbal decoding tests, most noticeably for facial expression detection. The implication is that, when aroused by stimulation in their environment, HSPs may …

Spatial Assessment And Analysis Of Pollution Sources And Water Quality In The Bogue Falaya River And Abita River Watersheds, St. Tammany Parish, La, Chelsea Core

LSU Master's Theses

Watershed planning is an important ongoing process for enabling communities to repair polluted waterways and ensuring the health and vitality of waterways for future generations. This study defines a process to spatially track pollution sources entering into our waterways. An essential tool used in the watershed planning process is geographic information systems. It is important to gather spatial information to illustrate where all potential pollution sources are located within each watershed. The data for this study were assembled into a database and mapped to locate pollution sources including: commercial/small business wastewater treatment plants; subdivisions without community wastewater treatment; and individual …

Applications Of Cfd Simulations On Microfluidic Systems For Nanoparticle Synthesis, Yuehao Li Jan 2012

Applications Of Cfd Simulations On Microfluidic Systems For Nanoparticle Synthesis, Yuehao Li

LSU Master's Theses

Microfluidics has been extensively investigated as a unique platform to synthesize nanoparticles with desired properties, e.g., size and morphology. Compared to the conventional batch reactors, wet-chemical synthesis using continuous flow microfluidics provides better control over addition of reagents, heat and mass transfer, and reproducibility. Recently, millifluidics has emerged as an alternative since it offers similar control as microfluidics. With its dimensions scaled up to millimeter size, millifluidics saves fabrication efforts and potentially paves the way for industrial applications. Good designs and manipulations of microfluidic and millifluidic devices rely on solid understanding of fluid dynamics. Fluid flow plays an important role …

ABSTRACT This exploratory study was conducted at four children’s gardens in major botanical gardens across the United States to determine if children became more aware and knowledgeable of plants while visiting these gardens. This was determined through the children’s garden stakeholders’ perspectives; the stakeholders of this study were the children and parents who visited the gardens. Their views were acquired through on-site observations and interviews. The purposive sample comprised 64 participants including 40 children (19 girls and 21 boys, ages 2- 12 years). There were 18 mothers, 3 fathers, 3 grandmothers, and 1 grandfather. The 40 children were observed and …

Effects Of Hurricanes And Fires On Understory Hardwoods In Pine Savannas, Darin Ellair Jan 2012

Effects Of Hurricanes And Fires On Understory Hardwoods In Pine Savannas, Darin Ellair

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Disturbance is important in maintaining the open structure of savannas. Frequent fires (every 1-3 years) limit the growth of woody plants, and prevent the transition from savanna to forest by maintaining open space for grasses, herbs, and fire-tolerant longleaf pine. Fires are not the only disturbances in southeastern pine savannas, which also experience hurricanes. Hurricane winds mainly affect the overstory, causing treefalls, increasing light, and adding litter to the understory. Hurricane effects were documented after Hurricane Gustav in 2008. More trees fell where the overstory was present, and produced localized effects on the ground below. Increase in light transmittance was …

Climate Change Policy In The European Union: Examining The Emissions Trading System, Tabitha Marie Cale Jan 2012

Climate Change Policy In The European Union: Examining The Emissions Trading System, Tabitha Marie Cale

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is a cap-and-trade program regulating the carbon emissions of specific industrial facilities and is the EU’s primary policy mechanism for complying with emissions reduction targets found in the Kyoto Protocol. This dissertation examines the overall effectiveness of the EU ETS and more specifically what factors explain why some member states are more successful at reducing their carbon emissions than others. OLS and logistic regression models are constructed as well as qualitative case studies of Sweden, Denmark, Portugal and Greece, to examine observed differences in emissions in all 27 EU member states from …

Between Bodies: (Re)Constructing The Corps Québécois In Roch Carrier's La Guerre, Yes Sir!, Tara Beth Smithson Jan 2012

Between Bodies: (Re)Constructing The Corps Québécois In Roch Carrier's La Guerre, Yes Sir!, Tara Beth Smithson

LSU Master's Theses

Published during Québec’s Révolution Tranquille, but set during the final phase of World War II, Roch Carrier’s novel La guerre, yes sir! (1968) chronicles how one community copes with the sober homecoming of its first “son of the village” to die in the war. The novel centers on the fallen Corriveau’s repatriation to what was then considered French Canada. The body’s passage from one realm, in Europe, associated with French Canada’s multi-layered, quasi-colonial control, to another, in soon-to-be Quebec, associated with the province’s self-definition and burgeoning sense of sovereignty, offers an allegorical commentary on the Québécois people’s passage from a …

Forage Systems For Finishing Steers In South Louisiana, Jose M. Rodriguez Jan 2012

Forage Systems For Finishing Steers In South Louisiana, Jose M. Rodriguez

LSU Master's Theses

Research has found conflicting results on animal performance and carcass traits associated with the use of forage as the primary feed source for finishing cattle. Consumer interest in forage-fed products has grown and little research has been done comparing performance of forage-fed animals and beef finished on different forages. Spring weaned calves (n=54; 257 ± 2.5 kg; 3/8 Gelbvieh, 3/8 Red Angus, and 1/4 Brahman) were used in the evaluation of three forage systems (S1, S2, and S3) on a 100% forage diet in two consecutive years (June 2009 and 2010). Steers were divided into 9 groups based on initial …

Development Of Innovative Stationary Phases For Chiral And Protein Separations In Open Tubular Capillary Electrochromatography, Leonard Moore, Jr. Jan 2012

Development Of Innovative Stationary Phases For Chiral And Protein Separations In Open Tubular Capillary Electrochromatography, Leonard Moore, Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Protein biomarkers in bodily fluids can lead to an indication of the onset of a disease. Due to low abundance of the biomarker at early stages of the disease and other protein interferences, detection may be challenging. Therefore, in order to achieve more selective protein separations, the development of a novel stationary phase has been investigated. Moreover, novel methods to apply polysaccharides as stationary phases were developed for protein separations as well as chiral separations. The initial discussions in this dissertation commences with the use of novel zwitterionic lysine-based molecular micelles as a coating for open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) …

Invasion Of Smooth Brome Into North American Tall-Grass Prairies: Impact On Native Plant/Herbivore Species And Mechanisms Responsible For Successful Invasion, Forrest Paul Dillemuth Jan 2012

Invasion Of Smooth Brome Into North American Tall-Grass Prairies: Impact On Native Plant/Herbivore Species And Mechanisms Responsible For Successful Invasion, Forrest Paul Dillemuth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research in invasion ecology has focused on developing ecological theory that can predict how invasive species interact with invaded communities. However, empirical support for theoretical predictions has been inconsistent. Inconsistencies may be attributed to the lack of data in three core areas; (1) field data with enough resolution to determine population dynamics of invasive species in relation to native species, (2) manipulative field experiments that encapsulate natural variation found among micro-habitats, and (3) field data that incorporate effects of invasive species within and among spatial scales. This dissertation has addressed these concerns by examining the mechanisms responsible for the successful …

Detection And Characterization Of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (Epfrs) In Soils And Sediments From Superfund Sites, Albert Leo N. Dela Cruz Jan 2012

Detection And Characterization Of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (Epfrs) In Soils And Sediments From Superfund Sites, Albert Leo N. Dela Cruz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) from combustion-generated PM have been demonstrated to form via reactions of molecular precursors with redox-active transition metals at 150-500C thermal reactions in a few seconds reaction times. While ambient temperatures are much lower, soils/sediments contain similar transition metals, and reaction times of contaminants in soils/sediments are years, rather than seconds. This questions whether EPFRs could be formed at ambient temperatures in soils/sediments from Superfund sites that are contaminated with hazardous materials. Superfund soils contaminated with PCP from Georgia and Montana, and sediments contaminated with PAHs from Washington. Using EPR spectroscopy, EPFR concentrations and structural assignments …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Testing Of Atomically-Precise Au Clusters Supported On Tio₂ For Co Oxidation, Sarthak Gaur Jan 2012

Synthesis, Characterization, And Testing Of Atomically-Precise Au Clusters Supported On Tio₂ For Co Oxidation, Sarthak Gaur

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Supported Au catalysts have been studied extensively for CO oxidation. These catalysts are known to catalyze this reaction even at sub-ambient temperatures. While recent literature demonstrates catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles <2 nm, the next stage in fine tuning this catalysis process is to develop gold clusters prepared with atomic precision. Such atomically precise gold catalysts supported on TiO2 hitherto have not been investigated for CO oxidation. The main objective of this work is to synthesize atomically-precise Au38 clusters in a flask-based method using principles of wet chemistry, to characterize these clusters using various advanced spectroscopic techniques, and to test these clusters as potential catalytic materials for CO oxidation. Furthermore, we have tested TiO2-supported Au38 clusters and a commercially purchased Au/TiO2 catalyst for CO oxidation at 30 °C and 60 °C, and used DRIFTS as a probe spectroscopic technique to correlate kinetics with the mechanism occurring on the surface of both catalysts in order to device the mechanistic pathways for CO oxidation. The work reported in this dissertation is the first spectroscopic observation of the phenomena where sulfur may have beneficial effect on the catalytic activity of Au/TiO2 catalysts. Such an interesting observation where sulfur has beneficial effect on catalytic activity of Au/TiO2 catalysts has never been observed in the past. We have also synthesized and tested Fe3O4@Au core-shell nanoparticles supported on TiO2 for CO oxidation. We show for the first time that, core-shell type nanogold catalysts are better suited compared to pure gold nanoparticles for heterogeneous gas phase catalysis of CO oxidation. By conducting comprehensive experiments towards understanding CO oxidation catalysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and temperature programmed reduction, we show that the enhanced catalytic activity is due to a combination of factors ranging from synergistic interaction between Au and Fe, complete removal of organic capping ligands and the presence of metallic gold (Au0) in the active catalyst.

Surface-Modified Plga Nanoparticles For Targeted Drug Delivery To Neurons, Jingyan Li Jan 2012

Surface-Modified Plga Nanoparticles For Targeted Drug Delivery To Neurons, Jingyan Li

LSU Master's Theses

The blood-brain barrier (BBB), which protects the central nervous system (CNS) from unnecessary substances, is a challenging obstacle in the treatment of CNS disease such as Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Many therapeutic agents such as hydrophilic and macromolecular drugs cannot overcome the BBB. One promising solution is the employment of polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) such as poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) NPs as drug carrier. Over the past few years, significant breakthroughs have been made in developing suitable poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and poly (lactic acid) (PLA) nanoparticles for drug delivery across the BBB. Recent advances on PLGA/PLA NPs enhanced neural delivery of …

Defense Gland Protein From Coptotermes Formosanus, Ioan-Horia Negulescu Jan 2012

Defense Gland Protein From Coptotermes Formosanus, Ioan-Horia Negulescu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki is the most invasive termite species and has the largest economic impact of all the subterranean termites in the US. Although a lot of work has been done on the determination of chemical composition of frontal gland secretion from different families of termites, the protein component of those secretions was relatively overlooked. This study started with the observation that proteins are present in the frontal gland secretion of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki soldiers. The goal was to characterize one of these proteins by identifying its DNA sequence which would lead to protein sequence, function, structure and role it …

A Novel Immunomodulatory Subunit Vaccine To Combat The Involvement Of Bovine Respiratory Coronavirus Infections In Shipping Fever, Genevieve Elizabeth Lum Jan 2012

A Novel Immunomodulatory Subunit Vaccine To Combat The Involvement Of Bovine Respiratory Coronavirus Infections In Shipping Fever, Genevieve Elizabeth Lum

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bovine respiratory coronavirus (BRCoV) is a group 2a coronavirus expressing both hemagglutinin-esterase and spike (S) envelope glycoproteins. The S glycoprotein is a primary coronavirus virulence factor responsible for both receptor specificity and membrane fusion-mediated entry into host cells. In addition, the S glycoprotein serves as a major antigen targeted by both the cellular and humoral immune responses and, as such, is an important target for antibody-facilitated virus neutralization. The objective of this research was the design of a safe and effective vaccine against BRCoV using a “prime-boost” vaccination approach. This method utilized an initial DNA vaccine encoding either the soluble …

In twenty-two interviews, both husbands and wives explain reasons for continuous father involvement in the lives of their children. Findings include a heavy reliance on faith, marital support and commitment to matrimony and value of responsibility to one’s family. Future research and implications should address …

Experimental Investigations In Co2 Sequestration And Shale Caprock Integrity, Abiola Olukola Olabode Jan 2012

Experimental Investigations In Co2 Sequestration And Shale Caprock Integrity, Abiola Olukola Olabode

LSU Master's Theses

More than sixty percent (60%) of conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs which are potential CO2 repositories are sealed by tight shale caprock. The geochemical reactivity of shale caprock during CO2 diffusive transport needs to be included in the reservoir characterization of potential CO2 sequestration sites as slow reactive transport processes can either strengthen or degrade seal integrity over the long term. Several simulation results had predicted that influx-induced mineral dissolution/precipitation reactions within shale caprocks can continuously reduce micro-fracture networks, while pressure and effective-stress transformation first rapidly increase then progressively constrict them. This experimental work applied specific analytical techniques in investigating changes in …

Development Of Cost-Effective And Benign Lipid Extraction System For Microalgae, Javed Iqbal Jan 2012

Development Of Cost-Effective And Benign Lipid Extraction System For Microalgae, Javed Iqbal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A laboratory-made continuous flow lipid extraction system (CFLES) was devised to extract lipids from microalgae Nannochloropsis sp., a potential feedstock for biodiesel fuel, with a focus to assess the workable temperatures and pressures for possible scale-up applications. Using conventional solvents, the CFLES recovered 100% of the lipids recovered with conventional Soxhlet extraction (USEPA method 3540) at moderate 50 psi pressure and 100°C temperature; conditions significantly lower than those normally used in pressurized liquid extractions requiring specialized equipment. Approximately 87% of the extracted oil was successfully transesterified into biodiesel fuel. For exploring the solvent potential of biodiesel, CFLES was also tested …

Koutango: Under Reported Arboviral Disease In West Africa, Jaime Matias De Araujo Lobo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are among the most common agents of human febrile illnesses worldwide. As crucially important emerging pathogens, they have caused multiple, notable epidemics of human disease and unnoticed epizootics over recent decades. Despite the public health relevance, very little is known about the geographic distribution of the agents and vectors, relative impact, and risk factors associated to the arboviral infection in many regions of the world and in the tropics in particular. Presented in this dissertation is an experimental study that explores the serology screening of serum samples from 151 patients whom were diagnosed with undifferentiated febrile illness …

The tracking of the process of reading and experimenting with performance provides a space for reflection that illuminates gaps to be explored in future work. …

Metabolic Downregulation During Diapause In Embryos Of Artemia Franciscana, Yuvraj Nanasaheb Patil Jan 2012

Metabolic Downregulation During Diapause In Embryos Of Artemia Franciscana, Yuvraj Nanasaheb Patil

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Encysted embryos of Artemia franciscana undergo a dramatic respiratory depression upon release from the adult female as they enter a state of hypometabolism termed diapause. The mechanisms by which such a respiratory depression is achieved remain unexplained. Evidence presented here shows that strategic enzymes involved in trehalose catabolism are inhibited during diapause, namely trehalase, hexokinase, pyruvate kinase and pyruvate dehydrogenase. Trehalose is the sole source of fuel in the embryos of A. franciscana, and hence downregulation of trehalose catabolism results in severe limitation of metabolic fuel available to the embryo during diapause. Western blot data demonstrates that pyruvate dehydrogenase …

Isolation And Characterization Of Adult Progenitor Cells From Healthy And Laminitic Hoof Tissue, Vanessa Pinto Jan 2012

Isolation And Characterization Of Adult Progenitor Cells From Healthy And Laminitic Hoof Tissue, Vanessa Pinto

LSU Master's Theses

Laminitis is an often fatal condition in horses with few available and only moderately effective treatment options. Separation of laminar dermis and epidermis lead to rotation or ventral deviation of the third phalanx inside the hoof capsule. Despite being a modified skin, equine laminar tissue does not completely return to normal after laminitis. The hypothesis tested was that adult progenitor cells in the equine laminar tissue are irreversibly damaged by laminitis. A method to harvest and culture cells in vitro from the equine lamina was established; and progenitor cells from unaffected and laminitic hooves were characterized and compared. Laminar tissue …

Generation And Characterization Of High Co₂ Requiring Mutants In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Yunbing Ma Jan 2012

Generation And Characterization Of High Co₂ Requiring Mutants In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Yunbing Ma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (referred to as C. reinhardtii hereinafter) possesses a CO2 concentrating mechanism (CCM) that allows the alga to grow at low CO2 concentrations (100 ppm CO2 in air). This dissertation represents the results from the characterization of three CCM mutants, as well as generation of eleven more potential mutants deficient in the CCM. One common feature seen in photosynthetic organisms possessing a CCM is the tight packaging of Rubisco within the cell. In many eukaryotic algae, Rubisco is localized to the pyrenoid, an electron dense structure within the chloroplast. The first mutant characterized has a highly disorganized pyrenoid. The …

Comparative Genomics, Transcriptome Analysis And Characterization Of Selected Regulatory Genes Of Burkholderia Glumae, Felix Francis

LSU Master's Theses

Burkholderia glumae is the primary causal agent of bacterial panicle blight of rice, which is becoming a major threat to global rice production. The genome of a highly virulent B. glumae strain, 336gr-1 that was isolated from rice in Louisiana, was sequenced to better understand the genome-scale characteristics, particularly that of its pathogenicity. Comparative genomic analyses with another strain, BGR1 that was isolated from Korea, revealed several unique regions present in the genomes of these two geographically separated phytopathogenic bacteria. Genome plasticity, primarily caused by a horizontal gene transfer, was observed in these closely related strains of Burkholderia that are …
