Salt Of The Maya: Evidence Of Prehispanic Salt Production And Architectural Function At The Eleanor Betty Site, Paynes Creek National Park, Belize, Tamara L. Spann

LSU Master's Theses

The Punta Ycacos Lagoon is home to many Classic Maya saltworks. Located in Paynes Creek National Park in southern Belize, these ancient sites may unlock answers to understanding Classic period trade along the southern coast of Belize. Archaeological investigations took place at one such site, the Eleanor Betty Site, in order to determine organization and architectural function. One transect was excavated along what is hypothesized to be the interior of a wooden structure. Using ethnographic, ethnohistoric data, in conjunction with archaeological fieldwork, the function of the structure within the salt-production site has been analyzed. The presence of preserved wooden posts, …

Insulin Dose Response Curves And Factors Affecting Insulin Sensitivity In Horses, Jeanne D. Lestelle Jan 2012

Insulin Dose Response Curves And Factors Affecting Insulin Sensitivity In Horses, Jeanne D. Lestelle

LSU Master's Theses

Three experiments were conducted to further study the use of intravenous insulin injection to measure insulin sensitivity in horses. In the first experiment, glucose responses to multiple doses of recombinant human insulin were compared in insulin sensitive and insensitive mares. Regression lines describing the responses in insensitive mares had less (P = 0.003) steep slopes and greater (P = 0.006) effective doses at 50% response (ED50) compared to sensitive mares. Curvilinear regression models provided a good fit (R2 = 0.95) for the prediction of ED50 from the individual responses to 50 mU/kg BW insulin. The second experiment estimated the repeatability …

Effect Of Surfactants On The Pretreatment Of Sugarcane Bagasse With Dilute Ammonia, Shuo Cao Jan 2012

Effect Of Surfactants On The Pretreatment Of Sugarcane Bagasse With Dilute Ammonia, Shuo Cao

LSU Master's Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin which are not readily available for conversion in their native form. It is widely accepted that lignin acts as the “glue” that binds cellulose and hemicellulose, giving rigidity and resistance to lignocellulose. The use of non-ionic surfactants during pretreatment can help alter the structure of lignocellulosic biomass to improve cellulose digestibility and ethanol yields. Tween 80, Tween 20, PEG 4000, or PEG 6000 was used with ammonium hydroxide for the pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse. The pretreatment was carried out by mixing sugarcane bagasse, ammonium hydroxide (28% v/v) and water at a …

The Ecological Impact Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Type Iii Secretion System And The Vibrio Community, Erica L. Stephens Jan 2012

The Ecological Impact Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Type Iii Secretion System And The Vibrio Community, Erica L. Stephens

LSU Master's Theses

Vibrio spp are gram-negative, halophilic bacteria that naturally occur in both shallow coastal waters and parts of the deepest oceans and are a known human pathogen. There have not been extensive studies that analyze an oil spill as an environmental stressor to vibrios. If there were to be an increase in the pathogenicity of vibrios it would be a cause for human health concern. The purpose of the two studies presented was to determine changes in the pathogenicity of V. parahaemolyticus pathogenicity and the vibrio community, with respect to V. cholera, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. vulnificus. The results showed that …

Kinetic Studies On Lactonization Of Quinone Propionic Acid Derivatives For The Development Of Redox Responsive Liposomes, K. L. Iresha Sampathi Perera

LSU Master's Theses

ABSTRACT Stimuli-responsive liposome systems that utilize endogenous triggers of tumor microenvironment have generated great attention in recent drug delivery research. Among such formulations, redox-responsive liposomes seem highly promising for cancer treatment due to their potential to release high drug concentrations upon reduction (by reductase enzymes). The research described in this thesis involved the evaluation of kinetics of trimethyl-lock quinone propionic acid reduction and lactonization, which accounts for payload release from trimethyl-lock quinone propionic acid-decorated liposomes. To achieve the ultimate goal of this research, several trimethyl-lock quinone propionic acid-based amide compounds were synthesized and characterized. Kinetic studies were carried out with …

Consumer And Processor Methods To Control Salmonella And Listeria In Shrimp, Genevieve Anne Edwards Jan 2012

Consumer And Processor Methods To Control Salmonella And Listeria In Shrimp, Genevieve Anne Edwards

LSU Master's Theses

A common method used by consumers to determine if shrimp are thoroughly cooked when boiling, is to wait until the shrimp float to the top of the water and are pink in color. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the current floating and color cooking method is adequate to ensure the elimination of Listeria and Salmonella species. Furthermore, to determine if processing and storage methods reduce the effectiveness of this method. Shrimp samples were submerged into bacterial suspensions for 30 min then allowed to air dry for 1 hr and color parameters were measured using a colorimeter. …

Biomass And Mass Balance Isotope Content Of Mussel Seep Populations, Philip Martin Riekenberg Jan 2012

Biomass And Mass Balance Isotope Content Of Mussel Seep Populations, Philip Martin Riekenberg

LSU Master's Theses

Cold seep mussels, Bathymodiolus childressi, are common cold seep constituents that form large populations at upper continental slope (500-1000 m) cold seep sites in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. These mussels utilize methane present through symbiotic relationships with methanotrophic bacteria. This study uses a coupled isotope technique to determine the relative incorporation of respiratory carbon in the shell as a measure of the availability of methane between different seep sites. This method indicates a higher abundance of methane at the Brine Pool site than at the Bush Hill site which appears significantly more resource limited and that changes in methane …

Modulation Of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Behavior By Nano And Micro-Sized Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate Particles In Suspension And Composite Structures, Lekeith Terrell

LSU Master's Theses

Nano and micro particles have steadily grown in interest for synthetic bone composite structures. Nano and micro sized calcium phosphates especially are of interest because of the osteoinductive behavior of calcium phosphate. Engineered composites incorporating polymers and ceramics, such as poly l-lactic acid (PLLA)/β-TCP, for bone tissue regeneration have been well investigated for their proliferative and osteoinductive abilities. Limited research has been done to thoroughly investigate the effects of various sized β-TCP particles on human mesenchymal stem cell behavior. Foreign bodies are known to elicit an inflammatory and cytotoxic response and several nano-particles are known to elicit cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory …

Repeatability Of Prolactin Responses To Sulpiride In Mares And Geldings And The Effect Of Pergolide And Cabergoline, Rebekah C. Hebert

LSU Master's Theses

Four experiments were conducted in an effort to develop a method, based on prolactin secretion, for assessing the efficacy and duration of activity of dopaminergic agonists for the treatment of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) in horses. In the first experiment, prolactin response to a low dose of the dopamine antagonist, sulpiride, was generally repeatable in estrogen-primed geldings in winter over 8 every-other-day challenges. It was concluded that estrogen-primed, sulpiride-challenged geldings in winter could serve as a model for the study of potential dopaminergic drugs for the treatment of PPID in horses. The second experiment was performed in the summer …

The Potential Of The Angle Of The First Rib, Head To Tubercle, In Sexing Adult Individuals In Forensic Contexts, Paige Whitney Elrod Jan 2012

The Potential Of The Angle Of The First Rib, Head To Tubercle, In Sexing Adult Individuals In Forensic Contexts, Paige Whitney Elrod

LSU Master's Theses

Accurately assessing the sex of an adult human skeleton is fundamental in forming the biological profile used in forensic anthropology (Patil and Mody, 2005). The first rib was chosen due to its distinct shape, compact size and increased sustainability to the taphonomic processes encountered in forensic and bioarchaeological situations. The first rib has been examined in previous studies; however, these studies have focused mainly on the sternal end of the rib. This study looks at the angle created between the tubercle and head and its potential use as an indication of the sex of an individual. This angle, created by …

A Novel Rna Extraction Method For Cyanobacteria, Zenghui Zhang Jan 2012

A Novel Rna Extraction Method For Cyanobacteria, Zenghui Zhang

LSU Master's Theses

Research on production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) by microorganisms has captured attention over the last two decades, since PHA have similar properties as petroleum-based thermoplastics, yet are close to carbon neutral and made from renewable sources. Cyanobacteria are considered to be good PHA producers because of their simple nutrient requirements (mainly water, sunlight and CO2) and fast cell growth. However, knowledge of metabolisms behind PHA production by cyanobacteria is limited. Therefore, gene expression analysis of cyanobacteria is required to get a thorough understanding at the molecular level, and gene expression analysis requires the extraction of high quality RNA. Extracting high quality …

The Problem And Possibility Of Animal Minds In Brandom's Work: Revisiting Heidegger, Rationality And Normativity, Joel David Musser Jan 2012

The Problem And Possibility Of Animal Minds In Brandom's Work: Revisiting Heidegger, Rationality And Normativity, Joel David Musser

LSU Master's Theses

Robert Brandom denies animals implicit reasoning by emphasizing their inability to make inferences explicit, and in so doing, denigrates animals by likening their behavior to that of machines and artifacts. I contest, however, that animals are paradigmatically more than any similarity or analogy to mechanical processing, just as humans are paradigmatically more than any reductive analogy to animals. The human/animal distinction need not come at the cost of ignoring the difference between animals and artifacts, and I believe we can largely subscribe to Brandom’s differentiation of the human in terms of expressionism if we allow that animals can make implicit …

Effects Of Varying Land Use On Headwater Stream Fish Assemblages And In-Stream Habitats In Southwestern Louisiana, Alexandra Marie Fitzgerald Jan 2012

Effects Of Varying Land Use On Headwater Stream Fish Assemblages And In-Stream Habitats In Southwestern Louisiana, Alexandra Marie Fitzgerald

LSU Master's Theses

Although watershed land use effects on in-stream fish habitat and fish-macrohabitat associations have been widely studied in the past, low-gradient, coastal Louisiana streams have been poorly described in the literature. In this thesis, I report the results of a two-year study exploring relationships among regional land use, in-stream physical habitat, and headwater stream fish assemblages. In chapter two, I examined in-stream habitat variables such as depth, flow, and substrate combined with three-pass electrofishing depletion estimates at thirteen 100-m stream sites. I used a combination of principle component analysis and structural equation modeling to determine if trends were present in the …

Impact Of Teaching Style On Student Learning Of Evolution, Laurie Font Jan 2012

Impact Of Teaching Style On Student Learning Of Evolution, Laurie Font

LSU Master's Theses

Natural selection is a topic that is laden with misconceptions. These misconceptions are often not addressed, and students can leave a biology classroom with the same incorrect ideas that they entered with. These misconceptions can be identified and addressed by using the Concept Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS). Furthermore, by teaching using methods that encourage hands-on, inquiry based techniques, students are more apt to reconcile these misconceptions and have a deeper understanding of the natural selection process. The goal of my research was to show a positive correlation between reduction in student misconceptions about natural selection and inquiry based activities. …

Ensemble Methods For Malware Diagnosis Based On One-Class Svms, Xing An Jan 2012

Ensemble Methods For Malware Diagnosis Based On One-Class Svms, Xing An

LSU Master's Theses

Malware diagnosis is one of today’s most popular topics of machine learning. Instead of simply applying all the classical classification algorithms to the problem and claim the highest accuracy as the result of prediction, which is the typical approach adopted by studies of this kind, we stick to the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and based on our observation of some principles of learning, characteristics of statistics and the behavior of SVM, we employed a number of the potential preprocessing or ensemble methods including rescaling, bagging and clustering that may enhance the performance to the classical algorithm. We implemented the …

LSU Master's Theses

The soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker), is a defoliating insect pest of soybean in the Mid-South and Texas. In 2008, Louisiana producers reported unsatisfactory control of soybean loopers in soybean with methoxyfenozide. In 2009 and 2010, field collections from Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi and Texas were exposed to discriminating concentrations (0.020 to 5.000 ai ìg/ml) of methoxyfenozide in diet incorporation bioassays. All field colonies were compared to a reference strain LC50 of 0.007 ìg/ml for 2009 and 0.008 ìg/ml for 2010. Louisiana populations exhibited LC50’s of 0.079 ìg/ml and 0.122 ìg/ml for 2009 and 2010, respectively, which were the highest values …

The Moderating Effects Of Perceived Intentionality: Exploring The Relationships Between Ideas Of Reference, Paranoia, And Social Anxiety In Schizotypy, Sean Cameron Morrison Jan 2012

The Moderating Effects Of Perceived Intentionality: Exploring The Relationships Between Ideas Of Reference, Paranoia, And Social Anxiety In Schizotypy, Sean Cameron Morrison

LSU Master's Theses

Ideas of reference (IOR), paranoia, and social anxiety are three common symptoms of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, which appear to be conceptually related. However, the precise nature of these relationships is unclear. A new measure that assesses perceived intentionality (PI), a social-cognitive bias for perceiving the actions of others during unpleasant social situations as being directed at oneself in an intentionally malicious manner, has provided preliminary evidence for a link between PI and paranoia. The primary aim of this study was to examine the moderating role of PI on the relationships between IOR and paranoia, and between IOR and social anxiety amongst …

A Survey Of Ballistosporic Phylloplane Yeasts In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sebastian Albu

LSU Master's Theses

A study documenting basidiomycete yeast biodiversity was conducted in Baton Rouge, Louisiana during 2010 and 2011. Using the spore-fall method, the leaf surfaces of seven ferns were sampled at biweekly intervals. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) of nuclear ribosomal DNA were used to identify 463 isolates representing 81 species spanning 12 orders within six classes in Basidiomycota. Nearly 30 of these isolates appear to be species new to science. Data indicate fern leaf developmental stage has an effect on the number of yeasts present. A …

Extending Job Embeddedness Theory To The Family Domain: Development Of A Construct And Measure For Family Embeddedness And Integration Through A Work-Family Balance Perspective, Tatiana H. Toumbeva Jan 2012

Extending Job Embeddedness Theory To The Family Domain: Development Of A Construct And Measure For Family Embeddedness And Integration Through A Work-Family Balance Perspective, Tatiana H. Toumbeva

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of this study was to extend theory and research on job embeddedness by conceptualizing a parallel phenomenon that also exists in the family domain, referred to here as family embeddedness. Work-family balance perspective was utilized to argue that job and family embeddedness facilitate successful role functioning by guiding the resource allocation process in both the work and family domains. There were two parts to this study. In Phase 1, a measure was developed and a nomological network was established for family embeddedness. In Phase 2, a model was tested to understand the process through which two types of …

The Use Of Ionic Liquid For The Pretreatment Of Energy Cane Bagasse, Zenghui Qiu Jan 2012

The Use Of Ionic Liquid For The Pretreatment Of Energy Cane Bagasse, Zenghui Qiu

LSU Master's Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass appears to be a prospective renewable resource that can be used for the generation of biofuels and bioproducts. The major concern in lignocellulose conversion is overcoming biomass recalcitrance through pretreatment while still maintaining a green, energy efficient and cost-effective process. Energy cane is a promising energy crop with high fiber content, cold tolerance, and less fertilizer and water input requirements as compared to conventional sugarcane. Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising solvents for the pretreatment of lignocellulose as they are thermally stable, environmentally friendly, recyclable, and have low volatility. This study assessed the use of ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate …

Identification Of Blood Protein In Louisiana Clay Sediment: Subtitle, Michelle D. Whipp Jan 2012

Identification Of Blood Protein In Louisiana Clay Sediment: Subtitle, Michelle D. Whipp

LSU Master's Theses

In modern forensics, soil from crime scenes is not tested for the presence of blood proteins. This is due to the belief that proteins degrade too quickly for detection. The purpose of this paper is to report on the research performed in an effort to counter that belief and in so doing, suggests changes in the current procedures. Using pig blood as an analog for human blood, blood was deposited outside, at two separate locations roughly a half mile apart, at a southern Louisiana cattle farm. Over 18 months, samples were taken from cores at the deposition sites and these …

Evaluating The Differential Effects Of Parental Involvement On Check In/Check Out In Children With Externalizing Behavior Problems, Aaron Jason Fischer Jan 2012

Evaluating The Differential Effects Of Parental Involvement On Check In/Check Out In Children With Externalizing Behavior Problems, Aaron Jason Fischer

LSU Master's Theses

School-based interventions are typically implemented based on a Response to Intervention model, i.e., a 3-tiered support system. Tier 1 provides universal support for all students; Tier 2 targets children who are at risk for developing problems; Tier 3 focuses on remediation for children with severe problems. The interventions in Tier 2 are important because they provide an opportunity to access children before their problems become critically dysfunctional. Check in/Check out (CICO) is a Tier 2 intervention that has been evaluated for children with externalizing behavior problems. In the current CICO literature, parent involvement during CICO integrates school and home life, …

Spatial Ability And Achievement In High School Physics, Michael Shawn Liner

LSU Master's Theses

This study investigates the relationship between a student’s spatial abilities and their success in high school physics. First, I investigate whether the success of students in high school physics class correlates with their spatial abilities before taking the class. Second, I investigate whether taking high school physics has an effect on student’s spatial abilities. No direct intervention was given to any of the students. Three instruments were administered to determine the student’s spatial abilities, The Perspective Taking/Spatial Orientation Test (Hegarty & Waller, 2004), The Mental Rotation Test (Peters & Laeng, 1995), and The Paper Folding Test (Ekstrom, French, Harmon, & …

The Effect Of Frozen Storage On The Survival Of Probiotic Microorganisms Found In Traditional And Commercial Kefir, Keely Virginia O'Brien Jan 2012

The Effect Of Frozen Storage On The Survival Of Probiotic Microorganisms Found In Traditional And Commercial Kefir, Keely Virginia O'Brien

LSU Master's Theses

Kefir is a fermented milk traditionally made from a unique starter culture, which consists of numerous bacteria and yeast species bound together in an exopolysaccharide matrix produced by certain lactic acid bacteria. Many health benefits are associated with traditionally produced kefir; however, bulging and leaking packaging, caused by secondary yeast fermentation during storage, has limited large scale manufacture traditionally produced kefir. Commercial kefir products have been designed to reduce these effects by using a pure starter culture consisting of a mixture of bacteria and yeast species that give a flavor similar to traditional kefir, but some health benefits may be …
