Frequent Quizzing Versus Class Reviews, Kayla Daigle

LSU Master's Theses

This study was designed to identify an optimal strategy for increasing high school students’ mastery of science material, by comparing an approach that has been identified as effective in enhancing student learning to an approach commonly used in high school classrooms. Over the course of the 2014/15 school year, the investigator compared two different techniques commonly employed to enhance student understanding. Students in a traditional 10th grade physical science class and students in an honors 10th grade physical science class acted as both the control and experiment groups. The investigator provided a pre-test to determine the students’ prior knowledge of …

Jean Cocteau: Orpheus Narcissus, Gordon Elliott Walker Jan 2015

Jean Cocteau: Orpheus Narcissus, Gordon Elliott Walker

LSU Master's Theses

Over the course of thirty years, the poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau created a singular artistic project he called the Orphic trilogy: Le Sang d’un poète (1930), Orphée (1950), and Le Testament d’Orphée (1959). This trilogy is marked by an Orphic pattern of a poet’s journey into an underworld to confront death. I will show that Cocteau’s invention is to have Orpheus be in love with death, for death to be an attractive and irresistible force to the poet. Simultaneously, Cocteau avails himself of the Narcissus myth, the man in love with his own reflection. Orpheus and Narcissus converge in …

Expression And Characterization Of Mouse Notch1 Abruptex Egf Repeats In E. Coli, Amid Paudyal Jan 2015

Expression And Characterization Of Mouse Notch1 Abruptex Egf Repeats In E. Coli, Amid Paudyal

LSU Master's Theses

Notch1 is a transmembrane protein involved in cell signaling, which is found to be linked to various genetic and neurodegenerative diseases. The extracellular domain of the Notch1 protein consists of 36 tandem epidermal growth factor-like (EGF) repeats, which are directly involved in ligand binding and are heavily glycosylated. EGF 24-29 repeats lie in the Abruptex region of the Notch1 protein, and regulate the ligand binding activity through structural changes. The role of glycosylation in ligand binding events and the overall structure of the Abruptex region are not known. Also, the role of calcium binding in Notch activation or inhibition is …

Health Effects Of Dietary Fermentable Fiber (Resistant Starch), Diana Gabriela Carvajal-Aldaz Jan 2015

Health Effects Of Dietary Fermentable Fiber (Resistant Starch), Diana Gabriela Carvajal-Aldaz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Resistant starch (RS) reaches the large intestine for fermentation and is considered a prebiotic. We wanted to determine if we could reduce fermentation for future mechanistic studies and how there is improved insulin sensitivity in human studies with or without increased incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). Two main studies were performed. In the first main study, low potency antibiotics (Ampicillin 1g/L and Neomycin 0.5g/L) were added to the drinking water of rats to reduce fermentation of RS. Antibiotics were used either prior (first) to or during (second) feeding of RS. Results demonstrated that low potency antibiotics given prior to …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Miniaturized Components Based On Extruded Ceramic-Filled Polymer Blends, Khurshida Sharmin Jan 2015

Fabrication And Characterization Of Miniaturized Components Based On Extruded Ceramic-Filled Polymer Blends, Khurshida Sharmin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this work is to develop an improved manufacturing process for microstructured ceramic components that is based on co-extrusion. Co-extrusion of structured feedrods holds promise for development of multi-layered, functionally graded and/or textured structures. However, it requires a polymer binder that is difficult to remove before structures can be sintered to full density. A two-step debinding is introduced to eliminate debinding defects that are commonly observed in thermal debinding (TD). Cracking is a major issue due to a lack of pore spaces for outgassing of pyrolysis products in traditional TD. In two-step debinding, a soluble binder is removed …

Trait Affective, Behavioral, And Cognitive Factors Of Anxiety And Depressive Symptoms In Children And Adolescents: A Hierarchical Model, Reanna Elise Whiting Jan 2015

Trait Affective, Behavioral, And Cognitive Factors Of Anxiety And Depressive Symptoms In Children And Adolescents: A Hierarchical Model, Reanna Elise Whiting

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Researchers have proposed a vulnerabilities model that attempts to explain the similarities between the internalizing disorders via a hierarchical pathway of trait affectivity and cognitive factors among adults. The current study aimed to replicate and extend this model to symptoms of four internalizing disorders among youth: obsessions and compulsions, generalized anxiety/worry, social anxiety, and depression. Regression-based path analyses utilized data from a community sample of 105 youth aged 12-17 (67.6% female, 80% white, non-Hispanic). Results largely replicated prior models in the adult literature and overall supported a hierarchical paradigm. Trait negative affect and avoidant behavior predicted mid-tier cognitive vulnerabilities (anxiety …

Motor Learning Effects Of Two Types Of Stressors: Implications For Practice Specificity, Christopher Adam Aiken Jan 2015

Motor Learning Effects Of Two Types Of Stressors: Implications For Practice Specificity, Christopher Adam Aiken

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Various types of stress have been found to have both positive and negative effects on motor performance (Szalma & Hancock, 2011; Van Gemmert & Van Galen, 1997). One potential explanation for these diverse findings is that stress increases the amount of neuromotor noise in the system (Van Gemmert, 1997). Low levels of stress may have an activating effect on the system which may improve motor performance whereas larger levels of stress decrease motor performance. Research has also suggested that increases in stress increase effort (Hockey, 1997) which may in turn facilitate motor learning (Lee, Swinnen, & Serrien, 1994). The primary …

Social Vulnerability In The Wake Of 2010 Bp Oil Spill: The Case Of Southeast Louisiana, Michael Ray Cope Jan 2015

Social Vulnerability In The Wake Of 2010 Bp Oil Spill: The Case Of Southeast Louisiana, Michael Ray Cope

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The research presented in this dissertation assesses the social impacts of the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon (BP-DH) oil spill in South Louisiana. The coastal region affected by this disaster is made up of rural communities whose residents rely on the Gulf of Mexico and its resources for their livelihoods. Understanding how this disaster has impacted the general quality of life in spill-affected communities, and how community characteristics have influenced vulnerability and resilience to negative outcomes, has important implications for basic and applied research and public policy. To examine these issues I use one-of-a-kind household survey data from the Community Oil …

Nucleolar Stress Due To Depletion Of Nopp140 In Drosophila Melanogaster, Allison James Jan 2015

Nucleolar Stress Due To Depletion Of Nopp140 In Drosophila Melanogaster, Allison James

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nucleolar stress results when ribosome biogenesis is disrupted. An excellent example is the human Treacher Collins syndrome in which the loss of the nucleolar chaperone, Treacle, leads to p53-dependent apoptosis in embryonic neural crest cells, and ultimately to craniofacial birth defects. We show that depletion of the related nucleolar and Cajal body phospho-protein, Nopp140, in Drosophila melanogaster led to nucleolar stress and eventual lethality when multiple tissues were depleted of Nopp140 by RNAi. We used TEM, immuno-blot analysis, and metabolic protein labeling to show the loss of ribosomes. Targeted loss of Nopp140 only in larval wing discs caused apoptosis, which …

A Market-Based Approach For Valuing Ecosystem Services On Coastal Properties, Michelle A. Savolainen Jan 2015

A Market-Based Approach For Valuing Ecosystem Services On Coastal Properties, Michelle A. Savolainen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As part of ongoing efforts to assess ecosystem services provided by wetlands, this research focuses on estimating the private monetary value of wetland services to residential property owners in Louisiana and Alabama using a hedonic price model. Understanding that tradeoffs must be made with limited resources, valuing ecosystem services is important for policy and decision making purposes, such as determining how much public and private financial resources should be put towards wetland maintenance and restoration. Data on property transactions, wetland coverage, and built infrastructure were collected for the analysis. Based on theory and results from a Box-Cox model, the log-linear …

Distribution And Female Reproductive State Differences In Orexigenic And Anorexigenic Neurons In The Brain Of The Mouthbrooding African Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Danielle Tiffany Porter Jan 2015

Distribution And Female Reproductive State Differences In Orexigenic And Anorexigenic Neurons In The Brain Of The Mouthbrooding African Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Danielle Tiffany Porter

LSU Master's Theses

The integration of reproduction and metabolism is necessary for the survival and continuation of a species. While the neural circuits controlling energy homeostasis have been well-characterized, the signals controlling the relay of nutritional information to the reproductive axis are not conclusively defined. The cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni is ideal for studying the neural regulation of feeding and reproduction because during their parental care phase, females undergo a two-week period of forced starvation while holding developing young in their buccal cavity. To test the hypothesis that candidate neuropeptides known to be involved in feeding and energy homeostasis in mammals show conserved …

All The Science That Is Fit To Blog: An Analysis Of Science Blogging Practices, Paige Brown Jarreau Jan 2015

All The Science That Is Fit To Blog: An Analysis Of Science Blogging Practices, Paige Brown Jarreau

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines science blogging practices, including motivations, routines and content decision rules, across a wide range of science bloggers. Previous research has largely failed to investigate science blogging practices from science bloggers’ perspective or to establish a sociological framework for understanding how science bloggers decide what to blog about. I address this gap in previous research by conducting qualitative in-depth interviews with 50 science bloggers and an extensive survey of blogging motivations, approaches, content decisions rules, values and editorial constraints for over 600 active science bloggers. Results reveal that science blog content is shaped heavily by not only individual …

Hydrological Influences On Catahoula Lake In An Altered Floodplain, Lincoln Dugue Jan 2015

Hydrological Influences On Catahoula Lake In An Altered Floodplain, Lincoln Dugue

LSU Master's Theses

Floodplain lakes in floodplains of large rivers undergoing intensive alterations are subject to hydrologic alteration. One example is in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) and pivotal habitat for wildlife. Catahoula Lake has experienced hydrologic regime alterations over the past ~150 years that may be contribute to changes in the habitat with expansion of woody plants. A Diversion Channel was constructed in 1972 to provide the natural, annual de-watering of the lake to maintain its ecological integrity, but ecologic changes are still occurring. Our general goal is to understand the hydrologic regime of the lake, particularly the historical hydrologic regime …

A Comparison Of Psychotic Symptoms Recorded In Patient Files Of Persons With A First Diagnosis Of Schizophrenia In 1930 And 1960 Cohorts Drawn From A Large State Hospital, Kristopher Michael Lee Henderson Jan 2015

A Comparison Of Psychotic Symptoms Recorded In Patient Files Of Persons With A First Diagnosis Of Schizophrenia In 1930 And 1960 Cohorts Drawn From A Large State Hospital, Kristopher Michael Lee Henderson

LSU Master's Theses

The growth of mental hospital populations during the 19th and 20th centuries along with the corresponding increase in the number of mental institutions is well documented. The cause of the growth is the subject of considerable debate. One hypothesis is that the growth in hospital population was due, in part, to an increase in the prevalence or incidence of schizophrenia. Another is that diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia changed with time in such a manner that increasing numbers of patients were given this diagnosis. The present study sought to address these issues in two ways: 1) by comparing the number and …

Modeling Two-Phase Flow And Heat Transfer In Polygonal Microchannels, Sai Sashankh Rao Jan 2015

Modeling Two-Phase Flow And Heat Transfer In Polygonal Microchannels, Sai Sashankh Rao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Microfluidics is a burgeoning research area with applications ranging from microfluidic cooling to biomolecule synthesis. Here we study two problems to gain an improved understanding of two-phase flow and heat transfer in microfluidic devices. We also study a third problem on boundary layer flow out of theoretical interest. In the first problem, we study the heat and mass transfer in polygonal micro heat pipes under small imposed temperature differences. A micro heat pipe, used in electronics cooling, consists of a closed polygonal microchannel filled with a wetting liquid and a long vapor bubble. We model the evaporation, fluid flow, and …

Development Of New Linking Chemistry With The Fac-{Re(Co)3}+ Core For Eventual Applications In Radiopharmaceuticals In Imaging And Therapy, Aponsu Meregngna Pramuditha Lakmi Abhayawardhana

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The facile labeling of biomolecules with a radionuclide is a key goal in radiopharmaceutical development. This study explores two different ligand systems for fac-[Re(CO)3L]+ complexes, that could be used in bioconjugation. The first approach uses a tridentate ligand having a sulfonamide linkage and modeled on previously evaluated fac-[Re(CO)3(N(SO2R)dpa)]PF6 complexes. The present goal was to develop new related sulfonamide complexes with more hydrophilic ligands designed to avoid the bioavailability problems that would plague the N(SO2R)dpa ligand system. A series of fac-[Re(CO)3(N(SO2R)dien)]PF6 complexes with different R groups linked to the central nitrogen of a symmetric tridentate sulfonamides were synthesized with the aim …

Analyses Of The Mec1 Dna Damage Pathway In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Barrett Ainsworth Jan 2015

Analyses Of The Mec1 Dna Damage Pathway In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Barrett Ainsworth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Eukaryotic organisms implement conserved surveillance machinery to sense and respond to DNA damage. Fundamental to the repair process is coordinated regulation of repair genes and initiation of cell cycle arrest protocols. Failure to preserve these checkpoints results in accumulation of mutated DNA and aberrant cell phenotypes that are characteristic of human disease. The yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, utilizes the MEC1 checkpoint pathway to regulate the DNA damage response. This study addressed two overarching themes of transcriptional and post-translational regulation within the MEC1 pathway. We first applied our understanding of the MEC1 DNA damage transcriptional response to develop advanced luciferase whole cell …

An Exploration Of Plasmonics For Nanoparticle-Based Gene Delivery, Corey Raymond Landry Jan 2015

An Exploration Of Plasmonics For Nanoparticle-Based Gene Delivery, Corey Raymond Landry

LSU Master's Theses

The spatiotemporal control of biological processes, especially cell growth and differentiation, remains one of the most compelling challenges in basic and clinical biomedical research. Fields as diverse as cancer therapy and regenerative medicine rely on spatial and temporal control of biochemical cues to achieve desired biological objectives. MicroRNA are attractive for highly-localized delivery applications because their instability in the cell restricts their biological effect to a small target area. These short, non-coding strands can be easily synthesized and modified for attachment and release from nanoparticle delivery vehicles. The research interest around microRNA therapies has produced a wide array of pathways …

Numerical Simulation Of Cold Front-Related Hydrodynamics Of Wax Lake Delta, Qian Zhang Jan 2015

Numerical Simulation Of Cold Front-Related Hydrodynamics Of Wax Lake Delta, Qian Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study applies a three-dimensional numerical model ECOM-si to simulate the circulation in the Wax Lake delta under winter cold front conditions. This model uses real topography and bathymetry of the area to reproduce tides and the circulation between December 2012 and January 2013, which captures a total of seven cold front passages. The model results demonstrate that the circulation in the Wax Lake delta area is significantly affected by the winter cold fronts. The major findings are: (1) Water fluxes in the delta distributary network are not solely propagated within the channels but also between the channels, indicating inundation …

Photoelectrons And Recombining Electrons In Atomic And Molecular Systems, Kristen D'Ann Fulfer Jan 2015

Photoelectrons And Recombining Electrons In Atomic And Molecular Systems, Kristen D'Ann Fulfer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work in this dissertation explores how photoelectrons enter and exit atoms and molecules. The electron rescattering events which may occur during photoionization or photorecombination processes play a dominant role in the understanding of how photoelectrons enter and exit molecules, which is intrinsically linked to how chemical reactions occur. Chapters 3-4 of this dissertation present evidence of vibrational mode specific breakdown of the Franck-Condon Principle in the photoionization of low symmetry molecules, acrolein and the singly halogenated thiophenes, due to resonant and non-resonant electron rescattering dynamics. In Chapters 5-6, the disentanglement of the valence electronic structure, as well as evidence …

Skin Color And Social Practice: The Problem Of Race And Class Among New Orleans Creoles And Across The South, 1718-1862, Andrew N. Wegmann

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to uncover the story of the New Orleans Creoles of color—the mixed-race, francophone middle class of New Orleans and the surrounding area before the Civil War. It shows how the people who became the New Orleans Creoles of color worked endlessly, over three colonial and territorial regimes and nearly 150 years, to define themselves according to the ever-changing cultural, social, and racial landscapes before them. It places this local history in the wider context of the North American continent and the Atlantic World—the space within which these people actually lived. In so doing, it …

Image-Based Modeling Of Porous Media Using Fem And Lagrangian Particle Tracking, Paula Cysneiros Sanematsu Jan 2015

Image-Based Modeling Of Porous Media Using Fem And Lagrangian Particle Tracking, Paula Cysneiros Sanematsu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The study of fundamental flow and transport processes at the pore scale is essential to understanding how the mechanisms affect larger, field-scale, processes that occur in oil and gas recovery, groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and CO2 sequestration. Pore-scale imaging and modeling is one of the techniques used to investigate these fundamental mechanisms. Although extensive development of pore-scale imaging and modeling has occurred recently, some areas still need further advances. In this work, we address two areas: (1) imaging of bulk proppants and proppant-filled fractures under varying loading stress and flow simulation in these systems and (2) nanoparticle (NP) transport modeling …

The Cost Of Design: A Life-Cycle Assessment Of Green Infrastructure Technology, Cheryl Kaye Lough Jan 2015

The Cost Of Design: A Life-Cycle Assessment Of Green Infrastructure Technology, Cheryl Kaye Lough

LSU Master's Theses

Landscape architectural research of green infrastructural practices has increased dramatically over the last decade. Due to this research, many designers are suggesting some form of green infrastructure within their projects. Much of the present-day research focuses on function and not long term impacts of individual materials. The current rate of implementation of green infrastructures might not produce a drastic impact upon the environment, but with installations being realized at an ever-increasing and larger scales, even minute elements within the construction of these structures begin to influence the overall ecological footprint produced by our designs. Designers must re-evaluate the materiality of …
